UK Referendum Thread [Moderator Sanctioned]

Postby Kyrusia » Fri Jun 24, 2016 10:06 pm

I will be quoting the original post of the previous thread for posterity and continuity. Remember to abide by the rules.

Frank Zipper wrote:On the 23rd of June this year a referendum will be held in the UK and Gibraltar on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union. The proposed referendum question is:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

and for the Welsh:

A ddylai’r Deyrnas Unedig aros yn aelod o’r Undeb Ewropeaidd neu adael yr Undeb Ewropeaidd?

The choices of answer being

Remain a member of the European Union
Leave the European Union

and for the Welsh:

Aros yn aelod o’r Undeb Ewropeaidd
Gadael yr Undeb Ewropeaidd

The BBC's potted guide to Brexit is here

If, as a result of the referendum, the UK leaves the European Union, it would be the first sovereign member state to do so. The decision has implications for both the UK and for the European Union. Though there is much dispute about what the results of withdrawal would be.

Opinion polls suggest that the UK public is fairly evenly split on the issue at the moment. The Prime Minister David Cameron and some other leading Conservatives, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the SNP, and Plaid Cymru favour remaining in the EU. UKIP and the DUP, several Conservative cabinet members and about half of the Tory MPs, and several Labour MPs support leaving.

The arguments for and against largely centre around issues of sovereignty and economics. The sovereignty questions include arguments on controlling UK borders and immigration, and the principle of free movement ; whether there are too many rules imposed on the UK by the EU; and the idea of closer union if we remain a member. The economic arguments include whether the UK gets value for money for its membership; whether it is good or bad for businesses, and the general economic prosperity in the UK.

What I think would be interesting, is to know more than just whether people here are in favour of leaving or not, but whether they are a UK citizen or from another EU member state or the wider world, and what is the most persuasive issue for them.

Time for my opinion... I am a UK Liberal Democrat voter, I don't have strong nationalist feelings, so for me the economic aspects are the most important. I am definitely in favour of the UK remaining a member of the European Union.

I think they have yet to realize the harm they've caused to the international markets.

Unless the Brexiteers plan on stocking on commodities like gold and silver for the next 6 months, I don't see how they'll come out ahead.

Here my optimistic prognosis: UK ends up getting a similar status as Norway and everybody is happy.

He said the Leave campaign was wrong to claim that the money saved from paying the EU would go to the NHS. Other than that, don't know.

I was following the stocks all day.

They took a hit, mind, the numbers are just at time of closing (4pm EST):

S&P500 = -75.91 (3.59%)
DJIA = -610.32 (3.39%)
NASDAQ composite index = 4707.98 at time of closing which apparently was good for some stocks and bad for as many as 64 stocks.

It was a bad day for the Dow Jones and the Standard and Poor 500, but it's not like it hasn't happened before. And for US markets, stuff like this is bearable.

I guess I'm worried about what's likely to happen to the NHS given that I'm going to be dependent on it for things, as well as the prospect of all our anti-discrimination laws being thrown out now that they're not being propped up by the EU.

The Spanish stock markets took a plunge on the first hours of the morning for them.

It was not pretty.

My prediction is going to be that the 350 million pounds that Farange promised to invest into the NHS is just not going to happen.

But, it will be kept afloat by the banking industry, I hope.

Well now that the UK is out of the EU, Spain can be as opportunistic as it wants, really.

Aside from the fact that Boris has made no secret of wanting it privatised and he's pretty much guaranteed to end up in the big chair.
