Humanity Never Learns
IC Thread
(Theme Song)
Image
"There must be some kind of way out of here, "
Said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Business men – they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth."

The Year is 2118, a full Century after the crash landing of the Alien Ship now known to the histories as Absolution, a ship that has become legendary in status as Humanity's deliverance, and likely the cause of its destruction. Finding no Aliens, Humans do as Humans do, we reverse-engineered their technologies, putting it to our use, and now a full century later the world is embroiled in a Cold War once again between Two Great Superpowers, seeking mastery of Mankind's Destiny as we extend our reach into the Outermost edges of our Solar System. The Superpowers, the United North American States and the Sino-Russian Federation, threatening to set the world ablaze, not in Nuclear Fire, but with something much worse, a weapon to end all weapons.

You play anyone you want, a Soldier of the European Federation, a Detective in the South East Asian Federation Capital of Singapore, a Politician in the United North American States, a Trader in the Caribbean Union, or a Mercenary in the Lawless Zones of the Middle East. But know that the call to arms heeds to no one, and expect yourself to be dragged into a larger world.

Image
In the year 2018 an Alien Ship christened the Absolution by the Scientists who excavated it crash landed in Antarctica. The Technology recovered from the Ship managed to start a new Human Renaissance, Technologies centuries away were suddenly realized and Humans soon began integrating these Technologies to their own bodies. Cybernetics and Genetic Engineering soon became widespread until Baseline Humans became a small minority of the Population.

In 2028 the Middle East collapsed as Oil became practically useless due to the widespread adoption of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Fusion Power. Although numerous UN Missions were sent in to restore order, most territories haven't recovered, coupled that with religious tension caused by both the Third Iraq War and the discovery of alien life, the Middle East still remain Lawless, even a century later.

In 2032, the first Genetically Engineered Baby was born in China, soon there became two movements, the Post-Human Ageist, who seek to make Genetic Engineering for all fetus mandatory, and Naturalists, who oppose all Augmentation and Engineering of any kind. After a series of bombings on Clinics by Extremists, Naturalists were discredited and banned by most world governments.

The year 2048 was a watershed year for Humanity, the European Union federalized in the face of Economic Uncertainty due to an aging population, becoming the first of such International Communities to Federalize, paving the way for the US, Canada and Mexico's unification in 2061 and many other such unions. And it was the year that the first human settlement outside of Earth was founded, beginning a new age of Space Exploration and Space Exploitation.

In 2088, Policeman Charles Dawkins had all his limbs and organs replaced by Cybernetic replacements, becoming the first fully cybernetic Human. Many declare Homo Sapiens obsolete.

In 2101, a signal was detected from the direction of Exoplanet Gliese 581g, this was classified by world governments.
Weapons:
Most weapons remain projectile based however Laser and Plasma weapons have entered common use in Militaries and some Police Departments.

Space Technology:
Widespread exploitation of the Asteroid Belt, Major Human Settlements on the Moon, Mars, and Saturn's Moon of TItan. Humanity is on the cusp of reaching FTL Technology, which is raising Global Tensions between the UNAS and the Sino-Russian Federation as both want to lead Humanity in a common coalition to explore the larger Galaxy.

Cybernetics:
Cybernetics is widespread, a new class of Post-Human Cyborgs are rising. Almost everyone has had some sort of Cybernetic Augmentation as it is necessary to remain competitive economically, especially for the working class.

Genetic Engineering:
The vast majority of the upper class is Genetically Engineered from birth, it range from editing Eye and Hair color to unlocking mutations and fast tracking evolution. Essentially creating a new subspecies of Homo Sapiens. Unlike Cybernetic Augmentations, genetic engineering is very expensive and only widely available to the upper classes.
The World of 2118 is, in a word, Dystopian. The fundamental institutional problems of our time has never been solved by 2118. The World is wracked by Inequality, Class distinctions now matter more than ever, and now in terms not just in wealth but in biology. The richest people in the world are able to afford genetic engineering for themselves and their children, extending their biological lifespans to such an extent that they become practically immortal, while the Lower classes are forced to get Cybernetic Augmentations that requires the removal of biological limbs or be rendered obsolete, and the Middle Class has become a minority, serving as foot soldiers for the rich.

Pop Culture has changed and morphed over the century but I won't cover that here, Pop Culture would be a collaboration between all the players.

Baseline Humans are like Unicorns in 2118, the vast majority of Humans, all 11 Billion of them, have had some sort of Augmentation, whether it is Genetic or Cybernetic. Most of them are found in the Lawless Zones of the Middle East.

People who have had Genetic Augmentations are called Genies, Cybernetic Augmentations are Cys (Says), this is slang of course.
When Tomorrow Comes is a Cyberpunk-themed Character RP, and in it contains a primary plot, a single story-line that affects all characters and Secondary Story Lines, relatively self-contained plots set in a geographical area. Any player can start his own provided that there are characters in his/her character's geographical area. Secondary plots also affect the events of a single story line.

There will be two IC Threads, one for the primary plot, separated into chapters and updated regularly. And a Secondary Plots thread. Secondary stories will include a #SubPlotNth in order to separate one story from another. The secondary plot reacts to the primary and vice versa, however the secondary plots must eventually end and converge with the primary plot.

Secondary plots are, by definition, secondary. The primary plot has primacy and everybody is expected to add to it.

Secondary plots must have some connection to the Primary plot. You can have a story about the murder of a character critical to the primary plot but if the plot is completely unconnected, we can look into having an Expanded Universe later.
The world is embroiled in a Cold War between the United North American States and the Sino-Russian Federation, however the focus of the RP is not at the Cold War itself, but at the Machinations, Conspiracies and Deliberations that have allowed it to start. The game starts just before the fall of Modern Human Civilization, during the last days of the New Renaissance triggered by the Absolution's Crash Landing in Antarctica. The plot is started when a Virus is accidentally released from a Sino-Russian Federation Research Facility in the Arctic, the nano virus is capable of shutting down the Cybernetic augmentations that are present in the majority of humans, and all Technologies derived from the Absolution, (i.e. 99% of Technologies that aren't the wheel. a stick or a rope) putting all of Human Civilization in Danger.

The characters each begin a path to unravel a Conspiracy that has ran the world for the last century and seeks to remake the world anew by taking advantage of the virus. Would you side with the conspiracy and cleanse the world through the Grey Flood? Or would you save a world that may not even be worth saving? Or would you take a third option, and take control of Mankind's Destiny? The choice is yours.

Nation Name: Ghondra
Character Name: William Hamilton
Nationality: European
Affiliation: Himself
Gender: Male
Age: 33
Species: Genetically Augmented Human (Genie)
Appearance: Image
Personality: William, as a product of his restrictive childhood, is a very rebellious man, and rarely submits to authority. He is loud and brash, unafraid to speak his mind, and has a very strong sense of what is wrong and what is right, often standing up for those unable to stand up for themselves. He is however very arrogant.
Weapons: An XM-88 Plasma Pistol he collected from his Mercenary days. Otherwise he carries an antiquated Magnum Revolver that he has upgraded and improved upon.
Strengths: Serving as a Scout in a PMC, William has a sharp eye and quick on his feet. He is also very street savvy and has gathered a network of contacts and informants across the globe.

Character History: William was born to an Aristocratic Family in the former United Kingdom, since he was born he had led a privileged and sheltered life, his life already planned for him by his family. He traveled the continent, sneaking aboard rides on Trains and Ships and even walking until he was eventually caught and sent to a Corrective Facility for Juveniles.

Seeing potential in him, Jose Mercer, the head of a Private Military Contractor freed him and employed him in his PMC. There William, Bill to his friends and Lucky to his colleagues, learned the Mercenary trade, being employed for more than 9 years before he decided that he had enough and deserted his post. Mercer and his PMC is still looking for William, and to end him for his desertion.

He now lives in New York City, working as a Private Investigator for members of the UNAS East Coast upper class.
Character's Role in the Plot: Starts the plot by uncovering the death of the first victims of the Grey Flood. After that we shall see.

Nation Name: Shadowwell
Character Name: Victor Armstrong
Nationality: United North American States
Affiliation: Himself Formerly Xylon Pharmaceuticals.
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Species: Genetically augmented cybernetic human(he is a bit glitchy)
Appearance: Image
In uniform
Personality: Cynical at times, observant and intelligent.
Weapons: His enhancements as well as a couple guns.
Strengths: His quick thinking, his enhancements and his skill with weapons and combat in general as well as his observation skills.
Weaknesses: Like all good noir like detectives he has two main weaknesses Alchohol and Women, he has others however. While he does have an implant in his throat rendering him nigh unkillable through ingested poisons iot can be overcome, and if it is injected he suffers the same as anyone else.
Profession: Detective, one of the few private detectives not bought out by the corporations or Politicians these days. Formerly he was vice head of Xylon's clean-up operations. (wet work for all intents and purposes.)
Character History: Growing up he was poor, but his father was a former soldier and had taught him how to fight. After his parents were killed in an accident, he turned to the streets to survive. He put the skills his father gave him and fought, and he did, rather well. Eventually he was put up against an almost undefeated fighter, he was a Cy, thus he would win most of his fights. Unknown to victor the Gang was loosely affiliated with one of Xylons Shell Companies. His group expected him to lose, as normally Baseline humans lose against any augmented ones. So they bet against him, getting decent odds.

Unfortunately for them He knew how to fight against Auggies, as his father had called them. They still had weaknesses, be it the joints or circuits they were still beatable. He was able to win but at a cost, the stronger man had nearly ripped one of his arms out, he was able to pierce the man's brain with one of his own augmented arms. (the other guys not his) As he lay back against the wall of the Pit, his people didn't cheer like others were. They had lost most of their funding in this gamble, it was supposed to be a sure thing, instead they lost everything.

They beat him within an inch of his life and left his body in an alleyway. He took a couple of them out, before they were able to knock him out. He wasn't a pretty sight, both of his arms were broken and several of his ribs. He was once a Ghost of the mega Corporation known as Xylon Pharmaceuticals. They found him on the streets and took in after he was left to rot with two broken arms and shoulder cradles, along with some extra injuries. they removed his arms and gave him cybernetic ones with some modifications. They also did some extra work to him, making him almost impossible to poison among other things.

HE would stay with them for a few years, they would continue experimenting on him, under the guise of maintenance for his cybernetics. He did eventually find out that the gang he was against at that time so long ago was funded by Xylon, however he let it go as he knew how they worked. What he could not let go however was the fact that they were responsible for his parents death and that he had been killing innocent as well as unsavory people while working for Xylon. He recently left the organization, they let him go as he was more valuable to them than he even knew. There was a problem they had installed a fail safe switch he could control that would kill him and basically render any genetic things null, it was in case he got captured on a mission, but it has back fired on them now.
Character's Role in the Plot: IDk, the young cynic, i truly dont know.
RP Example: TBD

Dislikes: Corporations who think they can get away with anything.

#WTC.01

Originally over a century ago Xylon was merely one of many large medical research and pharmaceutical companies. However that all changed when the Alien ship was discovered. They were among the first of the companies to use their influence to obtain some of the tech from the ship. While some companies changed with the times they didn't exactly. They went into genetic augmentation unlike many that went the route of cybernetic augmentation. They did do some research and production concerning the cyber side of things, but that was mainly only as a fail-safe of sorts should the Genetic augmentation market collapse.

The public face of the company is that of one that helps the people, providing affordable augmentation to all. However this was only on the surface, while they did provide a scholarship of sorts to allow the poor to obtain Genetic Augments, this was only a front as while they would receive the augments, there would usually be complication because many of the augments were purely experimental. Many of the augments would be refined through multiple experiments before being perfected and offered to the wealthy and prominent. They of course saved the best for their own people, their Ghosts. They were given modified versions of the most common gene treatments for adults.

The Ghosts are Xylons personal bogeymen, they deal with problems pertaining to the company and their employees. Many of them were modified from birth, but others are still from the original Ghosts, these guys are kept for their experience, as no matter how superior True Genies are they still lack true experience, for the most part. They have brought in Cys as ghosts as well, or the rare baseline human who was skilled enough to impress them.

Recently due to Market problems they have been forced to branch out to fully include Cybernetic enhancements as well as their long sought after Genetic augmentations. This was because, although the market is still raking in cash, many of the stockholders behind Xylon want more. This has resulted in the head researcher of Xylon to experiment with Cybernetics and Genetic Augmentation in one being. They were able to complete a prototype but lost it.

Image
Personality: Is warm enough, is intense, is stubborn, and if not the bit most charming

Profession: Radio show host/ activist
Character History: Fa'ad was born in what used to be Kuwait to a Bedouin family of nomads. Life in the middle east was extremely hard at that time, due to there being no government outside of the warlord. Fa'ad's family would move around Kuwait and southern Iraq herding sheep, similar to how their ancestors had for thousands of years prior. Fa'ad would be raised with a simple life, not knowing too much about the outside world. He was taught how the quaran, he was taught how to live off the land, and how to be a man, and that was all.

At 18 however, his family had grown quite large, with 20 members in total. His parents were unable to take care of them all with the sheep they had. Fa'ad took it upon himself to go out into the world, thus releasing his family from the burden of taking care of him; besides, he was a man by now, and needed to go out on his own anyway. Before Fa'ad would go searching for a wife, he would first travel to New Delhi India. Although he had never been taught much of the outside world, he still dreamed of traveling there, just to see what it was like. He was astounded by everything! The plane ride, the city, the cars, the pollution, and most of all by the people.

Fa'ad had lived amongst only baseline humans his entire life, thus when he saw these supposed machine men walking down the street freely, he was horrified. He was later informed by a friend he had made in Delhi that this was normal; this friends name was Mahmoud Al-sabin. Fa'ad had meet each other when Fa'ad stumbled his way into the Muslim quarter of Delhi. Fa'ad was still extremely scared of the world he was seeing around him, but found that the Muslim quarter was slightly more... normal. Not as many machine men, as he called them. Upon hearing the call to prayer, Fa'ad recognized something from his home life and immedieantly went to the mosque. After prayer, he met with one of the men whom were praying, Mahmoud.

Mahmoud would explain to Fa'ad the world that he had been sheltered from. The next couple of weeks, Fa'ad and Mahmoud would live together in Mahmoud's apartment. Fa'ad would get a job as a store clerk while in the quarter. While there, he would be subject to both news of the world as a whole, and the religious teachings against augmentation. Fa'ad would eventually be jaded towards the augs, seeing them as an attempt to immolate God. Eventually, Fa'ad was hired as a security officer in a mall in one of the nicer quarters of the city. Within a week of getting the job, he quit. He was shocked and astonished at the sheer amount of gluttony, greed, and hubris present within the richer and augmented classes.

Fa'ad bid Mahmoud a farewell after that and traveled back to Iraq to live a hired hand with a another family's sheep herd. A year of living this way though, Fa'ad felt that he was wasting his life. He was aware of the sins and the blasphemies being committed by the outside world, yet he chose to stay here and do nothing. Fa'ad chose to travel back to India. He refused the use of airplane this time however, as he had finally made up his mind that technology would inevitably lead to moral - and eventually physical - corruption. He would tag along with a warlord's caravan that was traveling to Islamabad, Pakistan. The trip would take several weeks, and Fa'ad would serve as a body guard. He would be taught how to use weapons by the other guards, and on several occasions he would use them to ward off attackers to the caravan. By the time the caravan had gotten to Pakistan, Fa'ad broke off and made his way back to New Delhi.

Once he had returned, he reunited with his old friend Mahmoud. Mahmoud was surprised to find Fa'ad a much harder a man than what he left as. Fa'ad would work out a deal with a local mosque and would start his own radio station inside of Delhi. He would use the station to spread his message of human purity, submission to God, and redistribution of wealth. Along with the radio station, he would also set up a political party inside the quarter, " Party of Holy Revolutionaries ". The PHR, would emphasis Islamism, with their own socialist and Human supremacist understandings.
Character's Role in the Plot: religious fundamentalist - the human supremacist who will lead a movement against the established aug order.

I hope this is good lol

I went kinda ham though. :-)

Nation Name:Greater Istanistan

Character Name: Sayyid Amman

Nationality: Born in Syria, currently has UN refugee status in Paris

Affiliation: refugee terrorism, has connections with Sino-Russian intelligence

Gender: Male

Age: 56

Species: Cybernetically Augmented human, although his implants are relatively obsolete and dependent on black-market tech

Appearance: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/J_A5sImunxM/hqdefault.jpg

Personality:

Sayyid Amman, after decades of serving a variety of revolutionary causes and remaining rootless, has attained a sense of humor about his causes. He is relatively even-keeled when compared to some of his more radical comrades, and despite his relative poverty and the need for secrecy he gets the most he can out of life. He reads voraciously, and his most treasured possession is a horrendously outdated and slowly rusting record player passed on to him by his father which he uses to listen to his unusually large collection of classical music while engaged in bomb-making or writing out propaganda sheets. Sayyid makes sure to exercise regularly, always cooks for himself so he can experience a range of cuisine, and occasionally likes inviting his neighbors over for checkers and falafel. Sayyid Amman always dresses well in rather outdated clothes. Overall, he enjoys the simple pleasures in life. He is affable, humble, friendly, and seen as a bit of an eccentric, but overall a nice man. People comment that they think he would be an excellent university professor.

This does not, however, in any way take away from the strength of Sayyid's political conviction. While he does not live the lifestyle of a militant or outwardly present as one, he has still developed over time a firm and unyielding set of basic principles. He always makes a point of remaining friendly during conversation, but maintains a fanatical strength of belief in his cause at all costs. Years of living with the refugees and witnessing growing social injustice have left him deeply embittered and angry. He rejects a society founded upon the premise of inbuilt human equality, and takes a near-perverse pleasure in the fear of those who consider themselves strong or above others. This primal drive for levelling is what drives Sayyid Amman on. He sees the entire world system as almost entirely worthless, and looks forward to a revolutionary new world in which all traces of the old and inhuman order are washed away. That he enjoys his anachronisms so much is a bizarre contrast.

Weapons: For the most part, Sayyid prefers to use bombs to accomplish his dirty work, as they are better capable of bringing terror and therefore fit into his ideological background better. However, he also carries at all times a well-maintained Mateba autorevolver, under the assumption that any human is bound to be stopped by six rounds of .44 ammo, and if that doesn't work then he wouldn't be able to kill his opponent in the first place. In general, Sayyid rejects the use of plasma and laser weaponry for being far too volatile and fragile. As an arms smuggler, he could theoretically access higher-quality gear, but is simply loathe to spend the money.

Strengths: Dedicated, smart, articulate, and cautious

Weaknesses: Has had several run-ins with law enforcement in the past, and is fiercely distrustful of many potentially useful augmentations. Probably too sentimental for his own good.

Profession: Terrorist, arms smuggler, bomb-maker, street musician

Character History: Sayyid was born during a brief period of calm imposed by UN-backed Syrian Provisional Government to a relatively well-off family of academics. Both of his parents were lecturers at the University of Damascus, with his father teaching political economy and his mother literature. They had decided to have their child late in life, but were still fairly good parents. Sayyid therefore grew up a happy and well-adjusted child, and planned to study at the same university that his parents had. Unfortunately, the Provisional Government appeared to be in a state of collapse, and was rapidly losing traction amidst a declining economy and growing Islamist unrest. Sayyid's parents refused to leave their homeland, but they sent him to complete his studies at the University of Tehran instead. While Syria decayed, he earned a master's degree in philosophy and began studying for a PhD, while also studying music as a hobby. During this period, he first made contact with both Sino-Russian Intelligence and the radical leftist milieu that he would eventually come to inhabit. Sayyid became involved in student politics, and was enjoying his stay when his mother contacted him to let him know that his father was ailing.

He returned home in time to see his father one more time before he passed away. His mother followed shortly afterwards, and the UN withdrew support about two months later. A bout of shelling destroyed Sayyid's apartment, taking his papers and savings with it. At this point, Sino-Russian Intelligence once again contacted Sayyyid and asked him to take refugee status and head to Europe, then report back on the social situation there. He obliged, joined the mass migration of desperate people, and spent the next thirty years as a refugee. The European government refused to acknowledge that the refugees were effectively there to stay, alleging instead that eventually the Middle East would stabilize and they could go back. Of course, this was an administrative fiction. Refugee status meant that people were unable to find good jobs, get state welfare, or receive the officially-sanctioned procedures for augmentation. Deaths from botched back-alley cyborgization were endemic, as were losses to plague, misery, and rampant crime. Sayyid Amman's qualifications as a degree-holder were not recognized by the European government, and he was therefore unable to advance in any kind of career. Instead of moping, he decided to spend his energy and efforts on the liberation of the refugees, seeing them as the bedrock of a political movement that could shatter the old world order. In this, was assisted by Sino-Soviet Intelligence, who funneled him money to destabilize their neighbors.

From then on, Sayyid Amman was dedicated to terrorism. He was careful and never let his hands get too dirty, while also editing a refugee newspaper and attempting to improve the cultural lives of his adopted people. In the refugee-dense jungle of tents, shacks, and squatter-occupied buildings that grew up around Paris, Sayyid learned the careful craft of terrorism and set to work destabilizing the existing order. His cover as a street musician allowed him to travel through the camp and meet people, while his editorials carefully promoted his views. Sayyid made it a point of pride that he had never actually had to shoot anyone with his Mataber, but a series of notorious bombings carried out against police stations, UN refugee offices, and monuments made clear that Sayyid was, for all his geniality and affability, entirely ruthless in pursuit of his own personal revolution.

Character's Role in the Plot: Dunno, but will likely try to use the nanovirus in any possible way to destabilize world governments, screw over the elite, and give the refugees a fighting chance.

RP Example:
Meiqon Trans-Continental Airport

The massive throngs of people in the airport lobby pissed Descher off, although he’d never admit it. There must have been hundreds of thousands of them – mostly Istani and Kh’en, but with a smattering of Aes and foreigners. Young and old, bureaucrats and workers, men and women. At least there weren’t any metahumans. That would make him metangry. Dang. He was off form. Stopping for a moment, he mounted a bench, then glimpsed through the press the bright neon sign of the Happy Departures Candy Shop. Annoyed, he dived back into the masses, and remembered as he did his younger days, when he won awards at school for his imitations of the ancient poets. The pattern almost crawled out of his mouth before he even noticed.

“Imagine, if you will, a million fetid sheep which crowd the high hills of Eucadia and, bleating, mill and turn every which way. A shepherd which wishes to cross that field and meet his sheepdog must push and shove, regardless of the reactions of the flock themselves. Such was the way which Descher of the Nimble Tongue crossed the atrium.”

He bumped into an absurdly fat Taharan, which had the not entirely accidental effect of sending the man careening through a mob of high-schoolers on a grad trip to a place where the drinking age was lower. By the time the man had picked himself up off several pulverized students and muttered his apologies, Descher had already reached his innocuous destination. With a final effort, he popped himself out of the throng and into the relatively empty candy store. The reason for its emptiness was apparent – a short young woman in a somewhat brutalized leather jacket with dull green eyes, dyed-blue hair, and a stubby nose that had clearly been pretty at some point, had since been broken at least nine times, was glaring intently at a display case.

“What do you get when you cross a terrorist pixie with daddy issues and too much PCP?” Descher asked, moving beside her.

“Depends.” she responded, not bothering to look at Descher. Her eyes were fixed on a small bag of gummy bears behind the pane of glass, avaricious and conniving.

“Anthea Solverg”, Descher responded, pausing. “It’s good to see you again. How was solitary confinement?”

“Fine.”, she responded again, before jabbing her hand through the glass, grabbing the bag of gummy bears, and pulling it out of the case. An alarm went off. Solverg smiled, revealing an incomplete but otherwise well-maintained set of teeth.

“If I’m arrested, I’m going back to jail, and anyone caught with me is an accessory after the fact. Better run, Descher!”

She bolted out of the store. Descher sighed dramatically, then followed her back into the throng. As he used his briefcase to bulldoze past a line of humming monks attempting to sell flowers and bang gongs, the terrorist caught view of the enraged shop-owner helplessly casting his eyes around the crowd. Somehow, the old man looked vaguely familiar, as if he’d shown up at some point in the past. Seemed shady, too. The fellow manning the cash register didn’t look like the kind of guy who got tough by regularly using his gym membership. Huh.

Three minutes later, and he was standing with Solverg again in a deserted departures lounge, facing the massive window which showcased the lines of blimps waiting for takeoff, skins glimmering in the sunlight. They were slower, yes, but cheaper. And the League of Humanity was throwing everything it had at the Monad Project. Fast travel expenses weren’t in the budget. Or maybe Descher had pissed off Facilitator Ellison one time too many and was paying for it. Both were distinctly possible.

“You’re aware of what we’re going to Bree for?”

Solverg turned her face to him and looked up for a moment. She deliberately popped a gummy bear into her mouth, chewed slowly, and stared at his blank face for a moment. Then she nodded and turned away again. Descher was briefly annoyed, but pressed on.

“Have you looked over the mission plan I forwarded to you?”

She ate a gummy bear, burped, and went scrabbling through the baggie for another one.

“How about equipment? Do you have all the gear you need?”

Anthea blinked once, then again, then with a look of infinite curiosity shoved her index finger up her left nostril and began a search within.

“Nice haircut, by the way. Still using the vise-and-butter-knife method?”

“Every time you say something like that, Descher – is that what you call yourself now? – I find myself thinking more and more that solitary confinement would be worth the pleasure of breaking all your fingers for a second time. As for your mission plan, it’s garbage.”

Descher flexed his fingers nervously. They still hurt when he thought of her highly creative use of a blast door.

“Garbage?”

“Unambitious. Also, when Ellerson got me out of jail for this job he let me know that just going to Bree won’t work. We need to get a Xandrian fresh from the source, and along the way the boss wants us to fry some bigger fish.”

“How big?”

Anthea smiled beatifically, before realizing that she had no gummy bears left and pouting. What was she even? The woman had been in more bar fights than the rest of Istanistan combined, but was still such a kid sometimes. Descher, suddenly pleased with himself, guessed that it was actually possible to be an old soul and young at heart at the same time.

Heart and Soul.

Ha! He’d perfected meta-humor too.

“The Empress of Vanparia. Ellerson wants a crack at the 120 million Nuyen reward.”

Descher howled with laughter.

“That’s... That’s ear... I’m sorry. That’s just about earth-shatteringly funny.” he wheezed, before descending into another fit of giggles.

Solverg cracked her knuckles, rolled her neck, grabbed Descher by the shoulder, and tilted him upwards. Before he could even pull himself together, she flicked his nose with incredible precision and horrendous force. Suddenly, Descher wasn’t laughing. He stumbled backwards, before tripping on himself and ending up in a seated position.

“I’m serious” she responded. “Both of us are temporarily expendable – me, because for all my faith in the cause the Facilitator thinks I’m a liability, and you because you completely screwed Kraken up. If we can survive and make a credible effort, both of us will be back in his good books.”

“Whrmmremmremr”, responded Descher, clutching his nose.

Anthea smirked.

Roughly a minute later, he tried again.

“Why? Isn’t that basically a death sentence? She’s the Wielder of Araucane, and created a humanitarian crisis because she was angry. Nes Sorrow shot her, then threw her off a balcony and she showed up completely OK. The only reason she hasn’t laid waste to the usurping army is because she’s restrained herself, and we don’t even know why. Even beyond that, her reflexes, stamina, and agility are supernatural. I’ve even heard somewhere that she can block bullets. Such a proposition is distinctly unfunny. Who would actually survive an attempted assassination on Lohannah Bates?”

Descher’s briefcase rattled beside him. The lock creaked, and for a moment the whole lounge dropped in temperature. Hoar-frost coated the massive windows. Annoyed, Descher slapped the lid and it went still. Suddenly, it all clicked.

“On second thought”, he stated, “this might actually turn out alright. If you can get me close enough to her... Yes. This might do just fine. Ellerson doesn’t actually know what this is, or what this does. That just makes it kind of funny. If there’s one thing that should be able to make Bates hesitate, it’ll be a good monologue and this. History’s hilarious.”

He grabbed the handle of the briefcase, before standing up and grabbing his fallen beige fedora. He perched it back on his head, dusted it off with his free hand, then took a moment to brush any dirt off his similarly beige suit. Considering, Descher cast his eye across his outfit. It would have to do.

“Descher”, Anthea said suddenly and a bit haltingly, “it’ll be nice to work with you again.”

“I’ll admit the same”, he responded in his usual bland monotone. “Creepy clones from the Council of Swans aren’t half as entertaining as you are. You’re usually pretty antisocial, but that Axiom Patriot clone? Double that. Ha ha ha.”

Anthea briefly caught herself almost smiling, before quashing it and going back to whining.

“I’m out of candy. Buy me more or I’m robbing the vending machine.”

And so they departed on a completely foolish mission. It would most certainly end up interesting, but neither one would likely find the end results anything near entertaining. There were things, after all, that even a man like Descher could not find funny.

So many people from the Lawless Zones, but I guess the instability there would result in some interesting characters.

Well, I've got most of one done, apart from the bio and personality. That said, there's also an alternative character idea I could do. I'll probably just stick with the one I've done the most with already, though.
Basically a cyborg assassin of some description, with a not particularly nice backstory, because those are a bit boring. Not sure if he's just going to be an assassin for hire, or working for a particular individual/group/organisation/faction, yet.
