So if players can create servers at no cost or tangible issue to the publisher, why do so many recent high-profile games, particularly online-only titles, not permit this?

Apart from "they're being ridiculous", because that much is obvious.

There's no real explanation given from the publishers, although many players including myself suspect that the reason why is so publishers can coerce users into purchasing the sequel of the game, or the other games that the publisher is releasing.

Then he's most likely referring to websites that provide abandonware games for download. Abandonware is never used in the context of servers, only for the status of games themselves.

Don't worry, it's totally fine, they just cut the campaign so they could rush it out for Force Awakens.

The sequel will have a proper campaign! $120 for it and the new Season Pass me lovelies.

I was quite disappointed, on the topic, to see a Season Pass for Doom on the Steam page. £40 for the base game, £30 for the season pass.
