The Civil and Political Rights Index (Closed for a few days)

Postby New Birgland » Wed Apr 27, 2016 3:20 pm

Please refrain from posting while I get through this weekend's backlog. If I don't reopen the thread by Saturday May 7, 2016, feel free to telegram me.

This is an unofficial continuation of Brasil Novo's Civil and Freedom Rights Index, which is itself an unofficial continuation of Ziegenhain's Glorious Freedom Rating Survey. Both Brasil Novo and Ziegenhain are no longer users on Nationstates, so I decided to continue the thread myself. To make the job easier, I made a computer program that calculates the results for me, the Computer Aided Ranking system. Because of this, you must be exact when entering your answers in the application.

The answers must follow the following examples exactly:
Do you have democracy? Yes
Do you have democracy? No
Do you have democracy? Yes (Explanation goes here)
Do you have democracy? No (Explanation goes here)

Full Name of Nation: The People's Republic of New Birgland

Do the people elect representatives to a legislature (disregard for direct democracies)? Yes
Are there two or more parties in your legislature (disregard for direct democracies)? Yes
Are elections open to all citizens above a certain age? Yes (all citizens above 18 are auto-registered, 16- and 17-year olds must manually register)

Does your nation have:
Freedom of speech? Yes
Freedom of thought? Yes
Freedom of association? Yes
Freedom of the press? Yes
Freedom of religious expression? Yes
Freedom of assembly? Yes
Freedom to protest? Yes
Right to bear arms? Yes

Has your nation outlawed the death penalty? Yes

Are foreigners/tourists treated with respect? Yes
Are private industries legal? Yes
Is gambling legal? Yes

The questionnaire ranks both civil rights and political rights in a single scale. So if you feel you have great civil rights but your score is lower than expected, check your political rights - they may be what's impacting your score. This also works for politically free nations with lower than expected scores. If you have any questions about your score, post in this thread about it.

Though the application is very similar to the ones in the previous two threads, there are a few differences. Also, the points system is different. So scores from the previous threads are incompatible with scores from this version of the thread, though the old scores can help predict your new score.

After a questionnaire is processed, the Computer Aided Ranking system outputs the total points your nation earned and your nation's ranking category. I will upload the source code on Github as soon as I get used to git.

Are your nation's leaders elected by a vote?
> No. Ditto.

Is the legislature an independent branch of government?
> No. We don't have any legislature to begin with. All lawmaking is conducted by the Instigator and the Dominion Senate (which is part of the executive branch in our nation).

> No. Ditto.

Are there two or more parties in your legislature?
> We don't have political parties because ditto.

Are elections open to all?

Does your nation have:
Freedom of speech?
> No.

Freedom of thought?
> No.

Freedom of association?
> No.

Right to have legal representation in trial?
> Yes.

Equal protection under the law?

LGBT rights?
> As of Instigator Henrik van Tessel's assumption of power, LGBT rights have been recognised and protected.

Equal rights for all races/ethnicities?
> Yes. The Dontarian Mercantile Order is impartial when it comes to governing the populace.

Are the police not allowed to detain people indefinitely?
> No.

Are the police and military separate entities?
> Technically, yes. However, our police is more or less a gendarmerie force armed with military-grade weaponry and ready to fight alongside the formal military in an event where the Mercantile Dominion is invaded.

> Yes.

Do police require probable cause?
> Yes.

Is torture prohibited?
> Its usage is unregulated. Physical torture is relatively uncommon, with psychological torture being the norm.

Are hard drugs legal?
> Yes.

Are porn and prostitution legal?
> Yes to both. Prostitution is heavily regulated, however, for health concerns.
