31 Flavors of Plaster

Anais was in mid-sentence when the building rumbled and let out a faint groan that put the healer immediately on alert; her head bobbed left, right and around as she twirled instinctively as though to locate the source. The building was a fortified position, explained as much that night months ago, and to have the building shudder was enough to know something had gone terribly wrong. She was about to suggest they both check in when the intercom blared to life, echoing into the empty spaces of the pristine hospital.

"Emergency Healers, please report to the Seventh floor. All available healers, please report to the Seventh floor."

Ogoti appeared with Malaise who moved past him and hurried along to prepare the rest of the room. There was a stern look upon his face and he simply nodded to the ritualist, "We'll prepare the area, just report to the seventh floor."

Nodding to his words, Anais took a deep breath and quickly grabbed her staff that rested against the wall. She moved over, gesturing for Rmwtyliin to follow as they reached a wall of cabinets and Anais pulled the doors open of one of them. Reaching at the bottom, she handed Rmwtyliin two emergency field kits, and one for herself. These field kits were created in response to emergencies and to address the multiple issues surrounding triage (the Fiend Attack was the primary catalysts to it) and field medicine response over all. All kits had the basics: enough to address a patient and move on while the healers handled the rest. Anais didn't need it, per se, but no harm being over prepared.

"Quickly," she kindly urged Rmwtyliin with emphasis as they rushed out of the hospital and to the seventh floor.

It was the second time the Guild Hall had rumbled in defiance while the earth quaked in protest. The second time that shook the foundations of their Hall and stirred the trees whilst the stream let out a soft shriek. Evacuation orders bounced and echoed throughout their stone walls, but for these seasoned NPCs, they were less inclined to listen to evacuation orders when help could be just as useful. Placed on immediate alert, they gathered their gear and rushed outside into the hallway. Dense smoke filled the passageway and into their nostrils and lungs, forcing Cherry to cough a string of mumbled curses. It was smoldering in here, even with the fire suppression system coming to life, as it calmly battered away at the flames not three doors down.

"Can't you do something? Blow a stream of air, maybe?" Cherry asked through a fitful cough.

"I could, but I'd risk causing another fire. Air feeds fire, remember?" Traxt said with a shake of his head, one hand covering his mouth. A second announcement for healers had cut Cherry off from responding.

Not waiting for useless deliberation, Alexia issued orders, doing her best not to choke upon the acrid smell of burning that invaded her lungs, "Clear this floor of anyone first then, then report to the defense team if they're not already there. I'm headed for the Seventh floor."

7E - It's Goin' Down For Real

"Really? Oh, so you must be from an... alternate history or somethi-" Oh, shit. A rather abrupt rumble, loud noise... crap flying all over the place, silt blasting the air... there went Elka's home. Again. She rapidly opened her doors and coughed loudly, digging around on her floor to look for her gas mask. She wished she had the foresight to bring more, just in case, but... well, she hadn't thought there would be ANOTHER disaster. Awkwardly shoving it about and putting it on her face, she fiddled around and sighed squeakily. They had to get out!

Elka had always been sort of an individualist. In Reilish society, when the raiders, the Melanth army, or some squabbling militias came your way, you didn't really think about anyone else. If they didn't have a good plan for when the attack hit, you left them behind and save your own hide. Standing still in her doorway, paralyzed with fear for a moment... Elka looked around. Nick looked alright, Oto looked... was that Oto? They didn't even know each other for an hour yet! The scrawny Reil looked back and forth with a meek expression, her face covered in that old gas mask as she looked around. Maybe Sakarias was fine!

"Uh... Robo... guy! Are you okay?" She squeaked out, her voice sounded muffled through the mask. Elka got down to the ground and began awkwardly trying to lift up some pieces of rubble. Looked like Nick had one handled.

... And then there was the heavily armored Arkadacian and her sister heading down the halls. While probably not terrifying to the others. Her heart nearly pounded out of her chest! Her family was a slightly... speciest sort, the Arkadacians were just massive, headbutting barbarian thugs, they were probably coming to finish them off! No, she wasn't going to bolt it. She had to help, damnit! ... Actually, seemed like most of them were fine, they could just get through the rubble and move it.

Seventh Floor - Fear and Loathing in the Building
Adri and Crysal were on their way back to their apartments after they'd had a rather long breakfast... and, well, they weren't that far off from the kitchen area. Adri instinctively poofed into smoke and yanked herself away from the entrance to the kitchen, keeping herself safe from injury.

Crysal was a little less lucky, having an arm inside it. While she mercifully enough didn't lose it, she sure as hell reeled from the disgusting, charred smell... and something smashing into the arm in question. Letting out a pained snarl, the weathered Arkadacian held it in front of herself and looked at it. Was it broken? Shredded? ... Sure as fuck felt like it'd been. Letting her screwed-up arm hang limply from her side, Crysal moved forward, glaring over to Adri. "Unless you want to be like our charbroiled friend in the kitchen, I suggest you get out. I'll take care of whatever's going on up here."

"Crysal, you're sans a useable arm. How the hell are you going to help?"

Crysal snorted. "I've killed people with less than an arm, I can sure as shit save a life without one." She said, stepping forward... Fuckin' rubble. Adri didn't have that hard of a time getting through it, poofing into smoke and simply floating through the cracks or just going above it. A few moments later, she'd arrived. Well, didn't look like anyone was dead. Well, anyone she knew anyways. ... This was starting to remind her of Vietnam circa '71 around now. Taking a shallow breath, Adri clammed her missing eyelid shut (didn't need that thing filling up with dust, after all), and approached. There was the cat trying to help someone out of the rubble... she'd swore she'd met him before, but now wasn't the time for reunions. She hastily and instinctively hacked off part of her robes to make some improvised bandages. Seemed like Oto would be needing them anyways.

Crysal cursed her lack of magical knowledge! There Adri was, worming her way through the cracks while Crysal was left stomping and trying to get through the rubble. Fuck it, there wasn't a way around. Grabbing her pole-axe by the middle and using an awkward one-handed grip, she began smashing at it in an attempt to make a path through, kicking her hooved foot at it in an ineffectual manner. Still, she was making some headway.

Probably would've done better with a fireman's axe, in hindsight.

OPERATION: SUPPLY RUN
DIMENSION: 270B
LOCATION: HD 40307 G
TEAM: Delta

Maghrl froze for a moment when he saw the true scale of those monstrosities, the massive arachnids that looked like they could eat him in one bite and not even have to chew. Like any small mammal, his instinctual first reaction was intense fear, especially with something so much larger than him bearing down on him with the intent to kill. He'd really not seen much real combat. But then he remembered training and used the force to shove away the feelings of fear, just in time to hear what Romulus was shouting at him to do.

"Aye aye, you bet!"

He made a force assisted leap to the other side of the pond, landing squarely in mud. Good damn thing he had his boots on. He grimaced and spread his stance out as if he was getting ready to push something heavy and closed his eyes, breathing deeply despite the danger. He focused on the insect half buried in mud and now only twitching, long since dead. He breathed in deeply and slowly mimed picking up the insect. It followed the motion through the air after a bit of struggle getting out of the mud, then Maghrl flicked his wrists and pushed towards the advancing arachnids, throwing the muddy bug through the air towards them.

Now it was time to run!

The Squib picked up his feet and hightailed it after Romulus, his short strides having difficulty keeping up. He poured what was left of his energy in the force to speed himself up as much as he could, almost pushing himself forward with the force. Hell, he'd need a good rest after this run. Hopefully Sosewe could pick up some of the slack after this! But for now he ran at a breakneck pace towards Romulus, avoiding the fire he started with a grimace. The Squib could feel the life in the things burning slowly going out, a tortured agonizing end for anything living. He'd have to have words for him doing that, but he did see the utility.

Anyway, scamper time!

Sterling had been calmly reading in the dining room, tucked in a corner with a pillow he'd brought down to lay on. It was a delightful story from his people's mythology, but his relaxation was cut short by something that sounded like a crack of thunder made long, and sent a chill down his spine. "Wh-wha?" He stammered out, unsure of how to react until the rumble shook through the building and almost threw him off his perch, save a bit of magic to right himself. Oh that was decidedly not good, not good at all. It sounded like someone making a mess with some risky magic back during his days at school, but this was much, much worse and deadly sounding... He clambered to his hooves, tucking the book into the simple saddlebag he had on him, glancing around nervously.

What was going on?

Then the announcement went off, and Sterling's ears perked. Wait, Healers? Hadn't he signed up to help them with logistics. Oh, Tartarus he had. It wasn't a bad thing, but every instinct(and the announcements) were telling him he should be running as fast as he could down and out of the building. Didn't help equines were naturally a bit skittish, even intelligent ones. Well, he had a job to do here now, better get to it!

The pony set himself to a gallop, heading right for the stairs and rushing himself up, rather than down as logic would normally dictate him to go. He ran past the hospital floor, tempted to go in there and help but knew if there was any sort of rubble it might be best to head right for where he was being told to go as a healer. So he kept going up, and threw open the door to it with his magic as he rushed through to get a sight of the scene before him. Rubble seemed to be blocking the hall, and who knows how much would be in the way of the people on this floor.

....Oh Celestia this was going to be a long day.

While doing his best to pay attention to the strange mouselike resident, the Synth started to notice Nick's odd behavior. Darting around, worried body language, all pretty consistent with someone starting knowing something the rest of them didn't. But Sakarias didn't have to wait long, as an explosion rang out, almost knocking him off his feat. "Oh f-" Was just about all he was able to get out before the roof gave a bit from the force of the explosion just above them, creaking ominously and dust falling everywhere. More creaking and a bit of loose drywall or whatever it was falling in just the right way, and Sakarias was down on his back, dazed. His processors were going haywire trying to get him back to normalcy, though the knock to his head had made things a bit groggy.

Hey, the Institute was thorough at making Synths humanlike, after all.

But soon enough, Elka's shouting and the mental shout of Nick jostled his circuits back into working order and he sat up, rubbing his head and pulling his jacked up to prevent dust and grime from getting inside of his body through the hole in his neck. "Oh this is not good at all. Is anyone hurt at all?" He sniffed, catching acrid scent that he was all too familiar with wafting from somewhere in the room. "...Oh hell I thought this place was safe. Are we under attack?"

Sakarias pulled himself to his feet, glancing around and seeing the wet and burnt body in the remains of the kitchen. It never got easier seeing bodies, but at the same time he'd seen so many that it wasn't a surprise anymore. He grimaced all the same, before looking over the area that wasn't collapsed and taking a tally of everyone there. Okay, seemed like just about everyone was there and not crushed. That was good. But everyone was running around paniced. Not so good. Might as well take charge, if no one else seemed to have any experience with this sort of thing. He cleared his throat before speaking, waving people away from the broken and burnt body behind him and towards the door.

"Great... Okay everyone, listen. Whatever's going on it seems mostly everyone's okay. Lets get moving, we can't linger. Who knows how long the roof will last, and I'd rather not be crushed today. Its not a pleasant experience at all. Got it? Get a move on! Everyone out!"

THE 7th FLOOR

Otonako could hear Nick but he sounded very far away. "Where am I? What's going on?" She opened her eyes, it was clear that there had been an explosion. "Where are Sakarias, Kale and Elka?"

At the thought of the others' names, she made her hands into fists, which hurt a little for some reason. She'd just been in a war, her instincts were sharp. She looked up and saw Nick.

"I'm ok, I think. Are you alright?" Her hair flamed red with anger, "Whoever did this is gonna pay." Immediately she vowed in her head to protect everyone.

She tried to stand up and realised her right leg had started bleeding. She cursed and clutched her guitar close to her. She pulled herself up with all the strength she had in her body. She needed to make sure the blood that was in her leg stayed there.

"Nick, my leg's bleeding. Not enough for a tournequet but not little enough for a plaster. Do you know anyone who could help?" Immediately her bubbly personality was switched with a serious one, this wasn't a time for that. Her hair was so strong by now that if you touched it, you would be worried about your hand burning off. Otonako was preparing herself for battle.

Suddenly she heard Sakarias telling them to move out. She tried to move along with Nick so she could get his answer. Upon moving, the dead body came into view. She thought of Forako...no she couldn't, this wasn't the time.

Rache and Willow

"No, she's gotta stay here," Willow agreed, nodding. "I was just making sure you understood that too. We already have a lie in place about where we come from, I don't want to accidentally tell her anything that we can't quickly back up. You know?"

What Willow was hoping was that after locating all of their friends, they would be able to send Pansy off with Hurricane fast enough so that she wouldn't be able to stick around and question them about their leaving this time period. He wasn't sure what they'd do otherwise if that somehow didn't work out, but he figured that it was a problem for much later. If he started thinking about all the things they had to do, not just here but back in Galli, he would drive himself insane. One step at a time Streaks, one step at a time.

One time, Cloud Duster hid from his fiancée in a log.

Okay, maybe that wasn't quite clear. To call Maya his
"fiancée" was a courtesy, it was his mother who proposed on behalf of him, or rather, his mother proposing on behalf of him on behalf of his slaughtered and rotting corpse-father, allegedly. According to mother, his father had been the bestest of comradery battle brothers with Maya's father before he got peeled like an orange by ghouling nails. That somehow inspired him to attempt to play the role of matchmaker by the time the two foals were born, but needless to say, Cloud Duster felt more obligation to the breezes against his feathers than he did the wishes of some hunks of fossilized horse meat in the ground. When he was first told his response was a simple "I'm not doing that" and he naively thought that would be the end of it.

That wasn't the end of it. The adults could hold as many expectations and self-aggrandizing 'shame on you, young stallion!' tantrums as they liked but couldn't legally
make Cloud Duster do anything by the time he was old enough to get married, but his mother was dim enough to not take this as the obvious cue to cut the crap and leave him alone. Not like she ever did before, to be honest, but it was still a burden. The few times she was able to (often quite literally) drag him into a visit were torture, as Maya prided herself on being as unoriginal as possible by following old traditions to the ταυ, strutting a performance in which she consistently pretended to be cold and unimpressed with her promised future husband by constantly mocking him and nitpicking his physical abilities as a soldier. Duster was supposed to respond to this by feeling embarrassed and transferring that embarrassment into the motivation to excel at his training, but even with him typically being able to mimic most expected behavior of him out of convenience, Maya was so fucking noxious that he couldn't even muster it. All he could ever do was stare at her with a dead and sleepy expression while vividly imagining the satisfaction that would come from pushing down knitting needles into her eyes until the screaming stopped and her body crumpled like doll.

So he avoided it, any time and by any means possible. Like hiding there in that log.

It was summer then too.

Any pegasus past or future would speak volumes about the sensory overload that was the transition from air to ground. If you hadn't spent a good portion of your life in the sky it might have been hard to relate. 'Living in the clouds' seemed very whimsical and fairy tale-esque at first, but once you got passed that you could begin to understand just how radically different an existence it could be: No plants. No dirt. No rivers, no lakes. Very few animals, just those couple of bird species that could manage to get that high, and they were always just briefly passing by as there was nowhere within cloud civilization for them to settle. Barring the din of pony and/or said bird presence and the occasional howling of the wind or storm, the quiet could be maddening. It was pure white and blue sterility, clean, colorless, and silent.

It was a small wonder then why the Cyniscans, as Cloud Duster described, were put off by the nature of below. Even in Willow's time a Cloudsdale child's first time descending could be quite, shall we say, intense. The first thing you would begin to notice were the smells - versatile and alien and assaulting you all at once, floating about from every direction possible, inescapable. The second were the sounds. Like rain, each blip was small in it of itself, but together they created a flood of chirps, squeals, squeaks, and rushing sighs of leaf against leaf in the breeze. Then you had the ability to touch and see - walking around on white plush material your whole life, then suddenly able to rub your hooves against the scratchy grass blades, the rough bark, see all the green, see the rainbow of mother nature's pallet?

It was too much to break down in simple words, you just had to experience it. Unfortunately, that experience was largely robbed from the pegasus quartet as they made their way out of the clouds, down the mountainside, and into the forests. Winter had stripped away the colors, sounds, and most of the smells, and left behind only the twiggy, petrified corpses of trees and rock. It was disappointing, but not what they were here for. It didn't stop Pansy from expressing some concerns though.

"Is it true that trees are alive?" she asked as they carefully tread between the towering brown stalks. "Do they move when nopony is looking?"

"They are alive," Willow answered, glancing back at her. "But they don't move. Well... not in the way you're thinking, they do grow though. All plants are alive."

She nodded. "What about grass?"

"Grass is alive too."

"Is all of it alive at once?"

"Not sure what you mean?"

Pansy looked around at the snow surrounding her hooves, looking for grass to demonstrate with - no such luck, of course. The windigos' ruin was thorough. "I mean, like, are the blades each their own little plant and life, or is a whole patch one big plant? Even entire meadows, just one big plant?"

"Huh..." Willow rubbed his chin. "I'm never thought of that. I'm not sure."

While those two made smalltalk, it was quite clear that Cloud Duster had been telling the truth about knowing his way around, as the forest looked pretty much identical in all directions yet he was able to point down specific paths and make progress. He didn't speak much during the time, not even to Rache for elaboration, only offering an occasional insistence or two to follow a specific direction. They soon came across a large hollowed out log. Duster paused for a moment to consider it, before lifting his head and leading on straight ahead...

The moss lining the log provided a soft cushion and nice cooling counterbalance the blazing heat of the day. He was almost prepared to take a nap when the sunlight shining through the log opening was blocked by a sudden arrival.

"I see you've become a bit habitual with your hiding spots," Thistle said, smiling and tilting her head as she peered into the log at her cousin.

For a second he thought she had come to try and retrieve him for mother and became cold, laying his ears back and preparing to lash out with menace, but he was quickly halted by a reassurance.

"I hate her too," Thistle quickly insisted, holding out her hooves defensively. Her smile didn't waver, feeling no insult at his sudden hostility. "Yeah, she sent me to get you, but I'm not listening. I wanted to get away too."

And he believed her. For anypony else it wouldn't have been that easy, but Thistle had worked long and hard throughout her life to dissect the strings and buttons that made up her foster brother and earn that automatic trust. Besides, she was telling the truth. She didn't dislike Maya to the same quasi-murderous degree that Cloud Duster did, but the young stallion wasn't wrong when he called her disagreeable. Maya didn't like Thistle Whistle either. The children altogether were just one big bad mix for one another. Too bad adults always thought too much about themselves to realize that.

Thistle set her helmet aside and casually climbed atop the log. "Do you want to talk?"

Silence. No he didn't. She nodded.

"Okay."

Years of having to run down to this place to grab him back on Aunt Rainshine's orders lead Thistle a slow but steady appreciation for the ground. It was like getting used to heights, ironically: The danger never really left, but the more you were exposed to it, the more at ease you became. Thistle didn't mind sitting there and taking in the overdose of the environment. It was majestic, in its own way. There was certainly a great many thing consider and study - was little wonder why Duster liked it so much. Even she found herself struck with curiosity from time to time. Like that day, when her fluffy blue ears caught the faint sound of squeaking in the distance.

Cloud Duster's attention was caught as the wood above him shifted and creaked, and he risked a peak to see his cousin wandering off into a new direction of the woods. She didn't turn around to reassure him or explain herself to him. That made him anxious. Not because he was terribly worried about her safety, but because of the lack of attention placed on him. His selfishness could have it's drawbacks: Thistle walking away from him had the same effect as a mother tricking her stubborn child into vamoosing his butt by pretending to abandon him. Realizing that the grown-up was holding their own ground and pressing a hoof down on such petty power games broke the proverbial spell of it all and served more to draw in than it did to repel.
NO! Come back here and take care of ME! Cloud Duster slowly found himself niggling out of the log to stare after her before quietly following at a distance.

The further on they went, the more Pansy began to feel uneasy. Well, alright, that wasn't terribly concerning, Pansy almost always felt uneasy. She was careful to a flaw but also far too passive, and the more that lingering fears about being caught and lynched danced in her mind, the more she found herself regretting not having spoken up earlier against the plan to sneak into Groundtown. She'd have felt much safer with Lieutenant Star Catcher or Lieutenant Aurora Mist here. They were brave, strong mares, unlike her. But even so, Rache seemed at least just as strong as them, so despite all she found comfort in that. She also tried to take cues from Willow - with his lack of experience in Cynisca he was in all likelihood objectively weaker than even she, but he still seemed so assured. He wasn't a fighter, but he was still smart and brave.

He got that way just from being around Rache and his other friends in the great beyond, she thought to herself. Not from agoge at all. Maybe there is more than one way? Maybe some ponies just aren't meant for the usual route. Maybe it's the same for me.

Didn't Rache say he hoped she could join them? Of course intellectually she knew he most likely just meant join them for Groundtown, but a part of here was willing to ever so slightly twist his words to feed into the small growing bud of hope in her heart. It was silly, right? They wouldn't want to take her with them to explore, would they? Could she even handle it? Oh, it was a scary thought. But compared to the dead-end existence here? Her devastation from the other night was hard to forget.

Pansy already thought herself little use as a soldier and didn't think her loss would be any burden on the city, and she even imagined that if she could convince her, it might be a way for her to take care of Aunt Petunia. She could be something more than a coward and a future horsepower number. Maybe she could be good at drawing like Willow, or... whatever else it was that explorer ponies did. No more stuffy armor, horrible drills, or forced laconism, just her and a small community full of breezy ponies who went where ever their hearts and curiosity took them and were allowed to be useful in their own unique ways.

But how would she ever go about asking such a thing?

Much like her foster brother, Thistle wasn't too bad at stealth herself. She might have been interested to ask if it ran in the family had she had more ponies to ask. She remained tucked into a patch of bushes at the very edge of the forest boldly peering at was undoubtedly an Earth pony structure. It was very strange. It looked like a tiny red house, but Thistle doubted anypony lived in it. The Earth ponies were never that elaborate with their buildings, but even they would never settle for something so humble.

Proving her point about the family stealth, Cloud Duster suddenly materialized next to her without so much as shifting a leaf. He offered no greeting, merely joining her in studying the miniature Earth pony home. It was sorta interesting, but he didn't want to spend much time on it. When bored (as he often was), he preferred to spend time on the natural mysteries, animals and plants and elements, not more ponies. And he was just about to leave because of that, when something quite astounding happened that stopped him: The door to the little red house opened, and out came what looked like puffballs on scrawny little legs. They piled down the small ramp leading down from the house and were kept close by the thin little fence surrounding the house. There big ones, orange, brown, and white, and little ones, who were all yellow and fluffy. The big ones strutted about and made kind of short 'whak!' sounds, whereas the little ones let loose many tiny peeps.

Thistle drew in a sharp breath. "What are those?" she whispered.

Cloud Duster blinked. He'd seen the creatures before, at least the big ones, in his previous episodes of spying on the Groundtownies. "They are chickens."

"Chickens?"

"They're where eggs comes from."

"Eggs?" Thistle wrinkled her snout skeptically and looked back at the funny critters. "But I thought eggs grew out of the ground like everything else. How could these things possibly create eggs?"

"They poop them out. All birds poop eggs."

"Ugh, you're just trying to be disgusting," the young mare shook her head.

"It's true."

Their conversation was cut short by the shuffling of somepony's presence, causing them to shrink back and stay as silent as they could so as not to cause a confrontation. An elderly Earth pony shuffled round the chicken house toward the fence, her limbs jittering and shaking in that way old folks' did, and the way her eyes squinted and her cane felt around suggested she was likely blind. The adolescent pegasi watched as she cooed kissy sounds to the birds and began to shakily toss grain into their fence, which they got themselves all ruffled for and quickly began to peck at the ground. The senior garbled something affectionately to them before her ears swiveled towards the far bushes at the ends of the nearby forest.

"Hullo there!" she waved at the bush where Thistle and Duster hid. She let out a hearty laugh. "Don't be shy, come on! Come and see 'em!"

The cousins were completely blown away. She knew they were there? But wasn't she blind? And why was she inviting them over? Thistle gulped and took the initiative, slowly rising from the bush and unraveling her wings, prepared to bolt at any moment. It was her hope that by gently revealing their race early on that there would be no need for panic and the two of them could leave in peace, but things didn't go that turn. The old mare merely chuckled again and continued to wave her over.

"Yes, yes you! Little 'uns just hatched yesterday, aren't they the cutest darned thing you ever saw'd?" the mare grinned kindly, nodding at the sound of the little chickens' peeping. "Bessy always makes pretty babes here, she does."

"
Zhey is brephos?" Thistle struggled to translate her Cynsican Greek into the language of the Earth ponies. If the mare truly was blind and the wings didn't reveal them, her atrocious accent surely would. Thistle was no good at foreign language, Cloud Duster was the expert at tongue mimicry, and she wished he'd stand up and support her.

There was no way the mare couldn't know they were pegasi with that, yet still, she only smiled and encouraged her to come closer and see the chickens and their new babies. Was it a trap? This mare didn't seem the type to harm, nor strong enough to do it. Carefully, Thistle fully emerged from the bushes and approached the henhouse pen.

Cloud Duster blinked slowly as he watched Thistle Whistle and the mare exchange words. He wasn't scared, but he wasn't keen on being here either. He felt no ill intent from the elderly mare, not that she would be much of a threat anyway, but overly eccentric behavior in strangers always set off a few alarms in his head. Chickens were certainly exotic but there were better things to explore out there. He was taken by surprise though how kindly Thistle took to the Earth pony though, smiling genuinely after just a few words and carefully flying up and lowering herself into the pen while the mare nodded approvingly. His foster sister smiled brightly and turned her head this way and that at the fluffy egg birds running in circles around her hooves while the elderly mare shuffled away chuckling.

He waited a few more minutes, made sure no townsfolk were coming with torches and pitchforks, before rising from the bushes.

"Cloud Duster, come see them, they are so cute!" Thistle encouraged, gently nuzzling a small yellow puffball against her cheek.

Duster walked closer to the pen with initial disinterest. As he got closer though, he began to fixate on the chicks. He'd never seen baby chickens before, just the grown ones, and he began to note the many differences between the two besides the fact that they were small and yellow. He plopped down in front of the pen and watched his cousin play with the birds. The chicks were fast, faster than their parents, darting this way and that without a care in the world. They chased each other, twitched their heads, and nipped at their feathers. They were, actually, rather amusing.

"Would you like to hold one?" Thistle asked.

Duster considered for a moment. "Yes." He held out his forelegs expectantly.

She narrowed her eyes and pulled the chick close. "You have to promise to be very careful."

He blinked.

"You wouldn't like it if somepony bigger and stronger than you were all rough with you, would you?'

He shook his head.

"So you have to remember to treat the babies like you would want to be treated by a giant."

He looked at the chick, looked back at her, then blinked again.

Thistle sighed. "The more careful you are, the stiller the baby will be. It will want to be by you."

He finally nodded in understanding and was allowed in the pin, taking care to not step on any chicks as he sat down on the patted dirt. Thistle carefully handed him one into his hooves. It was squirmy and peeped a lot, but he made sure to keep Thistle's warnings about being gentle in mind.

Cloud Duster was able to intellectually recognize the concept of "cuteness." He was also able to appreciate it. Just not in the same way as others. There were no blooming, protective, fuzzy feelings in his chest, no reflections of himself in their shiny little eyes. If he wanted to, he could grip this little chickie, chuck it straight at the hard walls of the henhouse, and watch as it squished up into a mangled ball of feathers, blood, and teensie organs without blinking.

But he didn't. Because he didn't want to.

Why would he? That would serve him nothing. A living and safe chick hopped and chirped for his amusement, a dead one laid there and attracted flies. Duster was not a sadist, if violence served no purpose, then violence did not enter his mind. Capacity did not equal inclination or desire.

It was not he who was considering all of this though; it was Thistle.

Her smile was felled by introspective concern as she watched her foster brother gently pet the chick. He laid down and let it scamper beneath his own wings, tilting his head as the babe bird squeaked and nuzzled the pony feathers in clear comfort. It nipped and preened at it's wing and the Private copied the movement. As soon as he laid his larger wing down, the chick proceeded to climb up it and hop atop the colt's back.
Peep peep peep! it continued the whole time, not a care or consideration for what ponies said. What they thought. Then it happened: the mask shifted, slipped, and evaporated to reveal a smile. His real smile. She could always tell the difference because she was the only to have ever seen it. There was nothing more beautiful.

She caught herself with a quick sniff, pressing a hoof into her eyes to keep them from becoming too hot. As she slid it away she caught sight of Duster's focus shifted to her, no longer smiling, and instead looking at her with a perfectly neutral expression. No concern, no sympathy, but also no judgment. He blinked yet again.

"What are you thinking?" he asked.

She smiled and shook her head. "Nothing."

"Lies."

Thistle's smile only widened, though her eyes and ears remained sad. She reached out and placed a hoof on his head. "What are we going to tell your mother when we get home?"

"It doesn't matter," he said simply, no hesitation. "She's already made up her mind at this point."

"And just what do you think that is?"

"You know what it is."

He carefully placed the chick inside his helmet to watch it run and slide about against the slopes. There was no despair in his tone, only matter of fact, but it still saddened Thistle. Duster never felt sorry for anypony - including himself. "You're not a bad pony, Cloud Duster," Thistle reassured. "You just do bad things."

"Is there a difference?" his eyes remained on the chick.

"There is," the young mare nodded solemnly. "If you were bad, you would have to change. I don't want you to change. You can stay just the way you are and do good things. Bad ponies can't do good things as they are. But you can. I believe you can... you just need help."

"My brain is broken," Duster poked his tongue out slightly. It was half-serious half-dismissal. The statement was something he believed, but he wasn't catching Thistle's sentiments regarding the fact.

"Not broken," Thistle reached out and pressed the tip of her hoof to his forehead. "Different."

She could tell she still wasn't reaching him. He nodded politely enough, but it didn't reach his eyes. For two ponies he always butted heads with, Thistle couldn't help but wonder whether or not he had started to believe what his mother and Valoria always told him on some level.

"Remember when we had to give that oral essay, with the reward of new blankets?" she asked. "And you wanted to poison Thunderer so he'd lose his voice during the due date and wouldn't be a challenge? Why did you want to do that?"

"I wanted to win."

"But then I convinced you out of it and asked you to win the essay fair and square, and what happened?"

"I won."

"That's right," she smiled and nodded. "You didn't have to do something bad because you're already smart, Cloud Duster. You were going to use your smartness to be bad but you used it to be good instead. That's why you're not a bad pony: the things you use to be bad can be used for good just as well. You just have trouble seeing the good choices as soon as others."

The blue colt seemed to be trying to consider this but still hadn't quite stumbled into the epiphany. "So?"

"So..." Thistle reached out and held his hoof. "Doing good things makes life
better, Cloud Duster. When you're nice to everypony, everypony is nice to you. They like you."

"I don't really
care if other ponies like me," he admitted, sucking in life lips.

"You should," his cousin nodded. "Because it makes life easier for you! When everypony likes you and trusts you, you never have to worry about constantly hiding or looking over your shoulder. Being bad means always having to hide, doesn't it? Pretending, always trying to make sure nopony digs up what you buried, it gets exhausting sometimes, doesn't it? When you just put in a
liiiiiiittle bit more effort to follow the rules, get on their good side, make the right choices... you can spend more time relaxing by being yourself." Thistle carefully pulled him into a hug. "You can still go after everything you want and have more."

There was a brief moment of silence as Duster thought and Thistle just held onto him, patting his back with loving reassurance. It was another forceful motherly tactic: Squeeze that resentful child nice and close, no matter how much they squirm, until they give up kicking and realize it's all for the good. Many things were running through Cloud Duster's head, most of which he wasn't sure how to formulate.

For Thistle, it was simple. Trying to control was easy. Trying to help was another story entirely. Many ponies claimed to care about you when all they really wanted was for you to change to make things easier for themselves. Even "good" ponies were selfish like that. Do you really love somepony if you're going out of your way to mold them into something they aren't? No. True love is patient. True love is unconditional. True love is adoring that pony for being just as you found them, but helping them go down the right paths in a way that made sense to who they already were. True love wasn't merely loving those who were easy to love.

A liar's greatest gift was honesty: "I could live without you," Cloud Duster admitted, pulling away and setting his chick free to play with its brothers and sisters. "But I'd be worse off for it. And I don't want to. Will you stay with me?"

Thistle's smile brightened. "For as long as I believe in you."

"Then I will never give you a reason to doubt."

And he meant that.

All of this overwashed the host's thoughts as he stared in present day at the tattered remains of the old henhouse in front of him and the other three pegasi. The fence had long since been torn down and trampled with leafs and dirt, only a few bits and pieces bent out enough to stick upward. The bright red paint had faded and the wood splintered. The forest had already consumed the bit of land where it stood, apparently unclaimed and thus unattended once the old mare inevitably passed, so that a wanderer may be perplexed by the sudden appearance of such a structure in the middle of a wooded vastness.

He just barely made up the voice of Willow attempting to sort out their plans.

"Maybe we can tie our scarves so they hide our wings," the artist suggested, tugging his own to demonstrate. "We could leave the armor back here so it doesn't stick out and come back for it..."

Pansy shook her head. "Sounds risky. Won't they be very angry if they catch us trying to disguise ourselves?"

"Rache still has that token that the Lieutenant gave him," said Willow. "I'm sure if at least he has it, it extends to all of us since we're in his company, right?"

"Well, yeah..."

"So even if they catch us we have back-up, but until then we don't have to deal with questioning..."

The two continued to swap concerns, ideas, and plans for how to go about searching for the missing explorers. They weren't particularly quiet as they forgot themselves in-depth with the talk. If it weren't for that, Cloud Duster might have heard the twig snaps sooner.

His head lifted. "What was that?"

Willow and Pansy silenced, twitching their ears this way and that. "... What was wha-?" Willow tried to ask before the emaciated form of a shrieking cannibal zombie Earth pony leaped out from its hiding place between the thickets aiming for his throat.

Time sped up and became the blur of battle. Though she shrieked herself, Pansy acted quickly and delivered a powerful hind-kick to the creature before it could bite into Willow, sending it flying across the forest floor. Several of it's bones dislodged and ripped out through it's dry, leathery skin, but that did little to stop it from trying to crawl back towards the group. Before they could even process the first, yet another gaunt pony-monster exploded through the wood of the henhouse and thrashed about as it attempted to ambush Cloud Duster, who was quick to stop it in it's tracks by driving a gauntlet knife through it's face. It continued to scream and struggle there on the blade, futilely scratching at it with it's cracked hooves. The Private noted that it had no blood before tossing the thing off to the side.

The hisses and shrieks from the creatures multiplied, and it became clear that they were surrounded. Several more of the zombie-like terrors began to emerge from the trees, their wasted, skeletal forms having served as a camouflage the entire journey.

"Back up, back up!" Willow screamed, pulling Pansy backward and urging the other ponies to stay back-to-back.

Aegis and Yuna

"This old place?" SkyWishes questioned. "Oh no, no worries, it's been abandoned for months! Left signs did you, that's smart!"

She nodded fervently and tightened her hood against the harsh wind.

"You know, I've been wanting to say this for a while, but didn't have the opportunity to do so before," the waitress said. "But I just wanted to apologize on behalf of Groundtown to the both of you. Ponies have been very mean to the both you and we have no excuse. But we weren't always like this, you know? Things used to be beautiful and festive, all green grasses and merriment. But it's the winter, it's brings out the worst in us all. Now what was that about the woo-"

Before SkyWishes could even speak of the devil, a terrible scream came flying from the direction of the very woods referenced. It sounded feminine and nearly gave the young mare a heart attack. She quickly flew into emergency mode.

"What was that?!" the magenta pony gasped, hopping to her hooves. Then: "Somepony is in trouble! Come on guys!" With that, she reared up and sped off toward the treeline.

Insidious

The sudden spasm that occurred throughout the building caused Insidious to momentarily wobble on her feet. She placed a hand against a wall to steady herself and reached out to grab Luces shoulder, partially to help herself and partial to help him.

“A thousand pardons Luce,” Insidious said as her skin reverted to a pale white, this time covered in red crosses which bubbled and floated across her features “But it sounds as though someone might be hurt and I should see if they need my help.”

She took a moment to shake the plaster from her hair before walking towards the stairs to procure some important medical instruments and devices from the emergency room before carefully making her way towards the 7th floor.

Aegis

“Thank you SkyWishes, your apology is heartwarming.” Aegis replied “It’s good to know were not encroaching, but know I don’t hold any resentment for your towns...drastic response to our presence.”

Aegis rolled his eyes at the sound of screams and trotted off after SkyWishes. He was unsure what might be the problem or more important who exactly was in the woods and he worried that in this new body he might be woefully unprepared for a fight.

Kale was listening to Elka while she spoke of music before everything went crazy. The next second, she was on the ground, her head ringing from the large BANG of the explosion.Instincts took over and she balled up for safety. Unfortunately for her, it didn't protect her fully. A large piece of rubble fell upon her landing on her lower left leg/foot. An audible crack rang through her followed by sharp and intense pain. "AAAAAHHHHH!!!" Kale cried out from the pain. Her leg was broken.

Her hearing came back after a few seconds and she could hear the sounds of voices. Sakarias, Nick, Otonako, and Elka; the others were fine thankfully. But herself, she was in pain and disabled. And things sounded frantic. She looked around through the plaster coated room, noticing the blasted remains of the upper floor. The smell of plaster and burning filled her nostrils, along with the putrid smell of charred meat. She didn't want to think about it, focusing on trying to help herself.

Taking some deep breathes, struggling through the pain, she got up as best as she could with her leg pinned and tried pushing the piece of rubble off. She struggled and pushed, but couldn't get the piece of rubble off. "Crap. Crap crap crap," She said in a frantic voice before letting out a large cry, "HELP! I'M OVER HERE! I'M STUCK!"

Building

The explosion was powerful enough to cause Giovenith's legs to buckle beneath and send her crashing to the floor. She cried out as her elbows slammed against the floor, but was otherwise unhurt. What now?!

She heard the intercom: "Emergency Healers, please report to the Seventh floor. All available healers, please report to the Seventh floor."

Emergency!

The godling snatched up one of the smoke-filled jars she'd been tending to, grateful that none had shattered. Fantastic timing! She quickly began to stuff as many as should could into her pockets before racing out the door and up the stairs to the seventh floor - because you always took the stairs during an emergency.

Seventh floor
Nick sighed mentally.  At least the girl was awake, even if she hadn't understood his request/order.  Okay, assume she's correct about her wounds.  "I only know a little bit about first aid, but I also know there are healers on the way.  You didn't hear the announcement?"

That wasn't good.  "What can you normally sleep through?  Who's the president of - of -"  Nick had read a few books where that question were asked in cases of head injuries, but given that this was a new arrival from some random universe - "Forget that.  Do you know where you are?  Name two rooms - uh, name two apartments on this floor and the Residents living there."  Memory was important, right?  Someone concussed should keep talking (debunked apparently, but he was unaware.)  Was she concussed?  He hoped not.  Leaving her seemed a little risky but I need to check the others.  Glancing up, he caught sight of the Arkadacian ripping her robes.  "I think she can help -"

Halfway to Elka's position, it occurred to Nick to wonder just how A -something Iracuse had gotten to them.

Another cough announced his presence to Elka.  His mousy neighbor seemed to be fine, if not able to move that far; the piece of Building under Nick's feet teetered.  He leapt off with a muffled crash, aiming for a stable-looking spot a foot away. A few moments later he heard Kale's cry for help, and ran over as fast as he could only to realize that he wouldn't be that useful.

Maybe I could move smaller bits of rubble. But that wouldn't help. If only we had -

A green man on the beach. A palm branch shooting out. A scent of plants -

"We have you!" Did that make sense? "Kale, I can make your leg feel better -" which he proceeded to do - "But I don't think many people can get through this mess. Can't you make a plant to get us out?"

The anesthetic effect was powerful, in a sense; Kale's nerve endings had simultaneously gone nearly numb, with the pain decreasing greatly. However, it had limitations; notably, if the nerve endings in question were stimulated in a new way or their nerves used, time would start running out - 2 minutes, roughly. Nick had wondered, upon finding out, why that amount kept showing up in his powers. "Also, don't wriggle the leg around unless you really need to! Remember to blink." He wasn't sure if that was a problem, but better safe than sorry.

----

Meanwhile, Rmwtyliin looked at the rubble. "We need people who can move this - now." How can we get them here? In Fvaarniimar we'd yell for the strongest around, get some ropes -

There are systems to let normal people move heavy weights. I have to remember how they work!

Kale noticed Nick coming through the dust towards her, getting a bit more frantic. Nick couldn't help move the rubble off here. She needed Oto or Sakarias. But Nick's words brought up something she didn't think of. Using her magic. She looked away, unsure. The last time she used her magic to help anyone, it went horribly bad. She couldn't trust herself to do it right. But... there wasn't much time. It was her only chance.

She looked back to Nick, giving him a nod. "I'll try Nick. Thank you for the help," She said, lifting the obsidian necklace off her, "Wakan... please help me." She then let the magic flow, weaving it into what she needed. A seed fell from her hair, hitting the ground once before exploding with green growth. The growth twisted and turned, forming a roughly human shape, with green leaves forming rough robes. The plant person had thick, viney arms, like the muscles of a strongman. Once formed, it bent down and lifted the piece of rubble with ease off Kale's leg. Kale let out a slight sigh of relief when the weight was taken off her numbed leg. With the rubble off, Kale used her magic more to form a splint on her leg. A piece of the strong plant person fell off and drifted onto her leg before growing and wrapping around it, forming a leaven splint.

"That should do it," she said, thankful nothing went awry. With some assistance from the plant person, she got up, standing on both legs but leaning on the plant person. "I can walk. Let's get out of here," Kale said to Nick before moving at a quickened limp out to the others. Her leg numbed by Nick's magic, she barely felt a thing. Hopefully it would last until they got to safety.

Luce followed slightly more sedately, though still with a degree of concern. Like Chrys, he'd felt the chill and it was still unexplained as far as he knew - the reason he'd been looking forward to catching up with Insidious. As he moved, he replaced the glasses that had slipped off his face in the blast and hurried up the stairs. Dora, too, had felt the shockwave and flown out of 2E wearing MB as a hat. The capricious rabbit's fur was puffed up as if charged by static.

The trio disappeared in one of MB's nimbuses of light and reappeared on the seventh floor, just off the stairwell, next to Anais.

"Triage," Dora said tersely to the Guild leader, and MB flicked both ears in greeting.

7th Floor

Otonako was unsure, did she hear the announcement? She was excellent at spacing out but... When Nick had started talking to her his voice had been a little far away- she hadn't heard anything he was trying to tell her. She felt her head for a wound and couldn't find anything.

"Dammit. I'm wasting time," she muttered, then she found a lump at the top of her head. A little worried, she started to answer Nick's questions.

"Erm...I can't sleep through much...I hardly sleep at all after the war. Uh...7E and 7F right? That's...Elka's apartment and the kitchen?"

After the explosion happened, Otonako had fallen, banging her head off the floor. This had caused her to conk out. If it wasn't for Nick's telepathic messaging skills, she could've been out a lot longer. A piece of wood, or another material similar, had gone flying across the room and hit off her leg- causing it to bleed. Her left hand got injured when she fell, she must've scraped it along the floor.

She let Nick go and help the others, Kale looked like she needed a hand or six. She would've helped too but her leg injury was getting more serious now. She didn't have enough strength to help anyone right then.

She tied a knot in her tights to help her leg wound while she waited for a healer. "That should keep the flow a little slower for now."

The Warren

Opa sat patiently as Thaddeus pulled its shield and set it aside for later repair. As the cyborg prepared to go to work on the android's face-plate, Opa noted his tiredness. The cyborg had become one of the individuals that Opa associated with after Septimus' mysterious departure several months ago, and at this point the riot bot could classify Thaddeus as a close ally and associate. Before replying, the robot suggested, as it was programmed to do, a course of healthy action for the elder cyborg.

"Your yawn. Betrays. Tiredness. Brother Usseio," Opa tilted its body slightly to indicate concern, as its old master had taught it many years ago, "Perhaps you. Should relax your. Priorities. You do not. Need to work. On all these. Projects at. Full efficiency. It taxes your. Systems. Unnecessarily."

Returning to the main subject matter, Opa answered the question bluntly, "I require. Assistance. With accessing. Possible. Communications. Channels that. The. Confederation. Utilizes. Brother Itum's. Absence is. Problematic. For my ability. To return to my. Home base. I believe he. May have files. In his apartment. Relevant to my. Search."

Opa lapsed into silence, allowing Thaddeus to process the request. The robot hadn't been able to access the Brother's archives for quite some time, the Building being unwilling to give it access without proper permissions. Whether what Opa sought was in the dusty files and data slates of Septimus Itum's old abode, it did not know. But it knew it was needed back home, and its temporary stranding on Gallimaufry was proving to be a serious problem.

It was time to figure out why the Brother had disappeared from the Confederation in the first place.

Apartment 4J

Sentia emerged from beneath the couch after John the Cultist left. She found the food bland, though passably-palatable, and the new water was nice. Septimus' absence would have worried her had she really pondered it, but she was too busy exploring the Building in his absence to really care. Provided his apartment was left alone, she would protect it in his absence. Perhaps he would return with his lizard friend soon - several months had passed already, after all.

A quiet meow accompanied her gulping down some water. She strolled over to the doorknob and began to jump up to fiddle with it, purring happily as it cracked open and she scampered out, closing it behind her. It was time for yet another adventure in the Building...

Sakarias sighed and looked back at the burnt corpse behind them, hoping it wasn't someone he knew. He just couldn't tell with the damage to them. "Okay everyone, Its not the first time I've been in a situation like this. Tends to happen while scaving old buildings where I'm from. We need the roof to be braced. We can't be digging at one of the supports of the ceiling and not expect it to potentially collapse under its own weight. IF anyone's got anything that could be used to hold up the roof above us in some way please do it here soon." He asked, glancing at the strange plantlike being that had appeared out of nowhere. Was that Kale's doing?

He strode over to the pile of rubble, tossing away the loosest of the rubble and pieces of wood away. "Hey! Is Anyone out there!? We're trapped, and the roof could collapse soon!" He called out, hoping someone had shown up already. He did think he heard someone hitting the rubble pile from outside after all. but that might juts be falling rubble.

Sterling paced back and forth nervously as others started to show up as well, realizing he was one of the first here to arrive. Two beings he knew had shown up, Crysal and Adri, and they were already getting to work. The pony was wracked by his indecisiveness, glancing around nervously. He'd never had to figure out what to do during a disaster, he'd never really been involved wit ha major one! He always just ran away pretty much. But he couldn't now, or people might die.

However, if he did nothing people could also die. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm his nerves. It was only marginally successful, but he knew he had to get to work.

The pony started preparing some magic, lighting up his horn bright, brilliant blue and casting the hallway into a similar shade of light as he focused on the rubble pile, picking up pieces and tossing them out of the way. He picked up the weaker bits to start but focused on trying to shift the whole thing out of the way as one piece as well. That combined with Crysal's attacks to break up the rubble more, the stuff they saw was starting to shift out of the way, but it was slow work.

"You're welcome.  Who or what is -"  Nick shook his head, scrambling over a large piece of plaster.  "Sorry, er.  Let's get Sakarias?"  Oto(nako) was being bandaged by Adri, and Elka not only seemed unhurt, she was a mouse. At least as far as Nick's subconscious was concerned, mice weren't very strong.  "He can help with the others - he sounded eager to get us out of here."

Kale was likely already noticing her nerve endings coming back online.  It took two minutes to happen completely, yes, but even this early on it would be uncomfortable.  Nick reached across yet another piece of ceiling, and numbness hit - for a time.  He admired the girl's stubbornness, really he did.  "You should NOT walk on that."  Wakan again.  What was Wakan?  He sternly told himself to focus.  "Come on," wheedled the cat, "We'll move faster if you just let...the plant carry you.  It'll hurt less..." oh.  Duh.  "It would be great if we could get you out, but the door's blocked."

Sakarias put in his two cents as they passed near rubble which Nick knew formed a low-ceilinged cave, entrance roughly facing the door, surrounded by deepish rubble.  Meowing to catch Kale's attention,  he pointed.  "Elka's in there, but she seemed okay.  A few scratches maybe...grab her after him?"

And there was Sakarias, a little further on.  Another meow, another lifted paw... Hopefully the plant would get the idea.  Or Kale.  He really wasn't sure how it worked.  "Hey -" but then he thought better of it.  Conversation could help distract them from the upsetting situation, but what if such distractions meant him losing his balance or the plant not moving?  "Hang in there - we're closer - hi, Sakarias."  Sax would be a good nickname...  He shook his head again. "You have any ideas on how to prop those bits of ceiling up?  Kale might be able to get some - Kale, can you manage some vines or something too?  Does anyone have a flashlight?"  It was hardly dark from Nick's perspective, but the rubble piles were shadowy.  "It might be easier to just get out.  The window isn't as blocked. Is that an option?"

It happened to be large enough so that they could all get out at once - if they could break it. Yes, they were seven stories up.  Nick knew that at least some Residents could catch them.  Kale might make a net, or... Sandy's a healer.  He should be coming. "I might be able to get through to tell them, and A - er, Iracuse got here." Said, as mentioned, was tending Otonako.

(Kale's leg would be stinging again if she hadn't taken Nick's suggestion.)

Rmwtyliin, on the seventh floor landing, gasped as she watched Sterling's efforts.

7th Floor

Otonako looked up from being treated,

"I've got my guitar here. I can use my magic to break the window using soundwaves if you want. You'll have to cover your ears though, unless you want busted eardrums."

She tried to forget about the pain in her leg. "OWWW!"

"I can't let my emotions get the better of me if I decide to use my magic. I need to stay calm and channel it effectively, if not the ceiling would fall through and I could kill everyone. There is my strength, I could use a karate move. It would take longer though, I'd need everyone's help, and I'm not sure how much time we have..."

"I could also use a karate move to try and break it, using everyone else's help too. Magic would be faster though," she let them know.

Otonako prepared herself for using magic if it came to it, she almost hoped it would, her injurues would make it very painful.

She blanked out the dead body and the disturbance caused by the explosion. If she used magic combined with fear it wouldn't end well. She channeled all her emotion into anger, causing her hair to flame again. Even if she had to hit the window instead, she was prepared.

Kale started wincing in pain again. The numbing magic didn't last long. Nick's request for the plant person to carry her was sound enough. She wouldn't move far even with assistance. The plant person lifted her up in its arms, cradling her so that her leg was propped straight.

"Wait a second," Kale said to Oto, "I'll use my magic to make some supports and cover. Just in case when you knock out the window that nothing falls." She cross her arms again, shaking her head and letting a couple seeds fall. The seeds rolled around the room, stopping at certain places before exploding with growth. The grew upwards, like green pillars, reaching up against the ceiling above. Vines grew outward from the tops of the green columns, spreading out against the roof, attaching to other vines and weaving a semi-tight web across the ceiling.

Kale uncrossed her arms, taking in a deep breath. "There. that should keep things stable while you get us out," Kale said. She hoped it would keep them safe. Her magic was strong, but could it prevent a whole building from collapsing on them? She hoped it was just some small debris.

Up one flight...

Up two flights...

Torii raced up the stairs, nearly falling as she rounded up to the fifth floor. She took floor six with leaps and bounds, and finally crashed up to floor seven, hitting the ground before shooting back up and scrambling towards the scene. The rubble and damage all around was surprising, and very worrying.

When had the building ever done this? This wasn't right.

Torii kept her weapon ready, though she had a feeling it was no use, and tried looking around. "Hello?", She yelled, stumbling forward, shaking. She was tired, worried, and confused, and she knew that some of her friends were hurt. She needed to move.

Audette, on the other side of the hallway, coughed from the dust kicked up in the blast, and called out as well.

Sakarias frowned, shaking his head and moving a bit more rubble out of the way before wiping off his hands of dust."No No no, Blasting out the window would do nothing. We're on the seventh floor aren't we? It'd just do more damage and potentially hurt us I'd think. No Its better to just get to work moving things manually. Simple solutions tend to be the best after all."

The synth frowned, wondering how they were going to do this. Kale was injured, but at least they had three people to dig out with. The mousish girl and Oto and himself. Nick couldn't be much help as a cat, but his senses could warn them of a further collapse. Kale was obviously hurt, but her powers were letting her be a huge boon to their survival. The synth mumbled to himself with a sigh, "Guess we just have to truck through this."

He then smiled towards Kale, approving of the plant supports. "Good job Kale, might buy us some more time while we get to work digging ourselves out. Keep the ceiling up and the rest of us, excepting you of course Nick, can work at digging us out." The synth's servos whined as he kept moving heavier and heavier chunks, but his body being robotic he never really got tired. He just kept working at a rapid pace, shifting the rubble and debris out of the way monotonously. He was not going to let people be crushed here, no sir.

"Ok." Otonako felt a little bummed. It would've taken five seconds, she was sure she would've got it right. Nonetheless, they needed help.

"What was it Sakarias said? Something about simple solutions?"

She moved away from the healer,

"Thanks."

Otonako took out her rage on the rubble with her left leg, she'd been trying to build her anger up after all. "Damn. Damn! DAMN!" She managed to kick some of it away.

"Any help over here?" Otonako looked away as tears welled up in her eyes. All she wanted was to go to sleep and wake up on the boat with Aquario, Kinaka and Reina. She kept fighting with the rubble and materials lying in front of the door, today had been difficult and she needed to let it out.

Smoke, Rubble and People

With Rmwtyliin still by her side, Anais nodded in greeting at Giovenith's arrival along to the Conservators and the cute bunny MB, while Sterling and Crysal ahead went to work to clear the area. Rubble, debris, and no small amount of smoke had filled the air and faint outlines of the hallway could be made out, along with a huge hole that was the door of 7E. The acrid smell of smoke combined with the heat would only worsen if they didn't hurry. With it was already going to be a hassle moving through the debris strewn across, it would be absolutely dangerous if they chucked around pieces of the building with abandon; they'd only further the risk to those injured inside. Everyone had their strengths, it was time to put them to use.

"Slowly please," Anais urged with caution as she called out the heavy lifters of the group, "We don't know the extent of the damage or the integrity around the apartments. MB, we'll likely need you to teleport the most serious cases back to the hospital. Giovenith and Rmwtyliin will deal with triage; ascertain conditions and move along. Work in tandem. Dora, Luce, we need you as backup, if the structures surrounding the area collapses, we'll need Time, even a handful of moments can mean saving a life or losing one."

The faint muffles from across the hallway only urged the ritualist to have the group move in haste. "Priorities are 7E, F, & G, we will evacuate the surrounding areas if there's anyone else still in their apartments."

She stepped away from the cobbled group for a moment and cautiously moved to one side, near a corner and closed her eyes as she murmured a prayer. Sullen and faint blue/green energy swirled around her for a moment, coalescing into a ball as it floated gently above her head and released tendrils that sparked and glided, and odd mix of lightning and strands of ambient energy as it struck the ground in a soft hiss around her figure. A spirit formed then, its misty strands light barely seen, but the faint haunting sound of the non-corporeal was distinctive as it's form took shape, its arms chained to something from beyond. It stood next to her, unblinking, unconcerned and its inhuman features barely showed any intelligence.

Anais murmured the last words of her prayer, feeling her power in control of the spirit. She opened her eyes then, moving to rejoin the group as they moved ahead as much as they could while the rubble and debris were moved and cleared aside.

"A Spirit of Soothing," Anais explained, the chained being moved with haunting sounds within its circle, "Injured people are often in shock, often under extreme duress or high on adrenaline, unable to see past their own fears. It's range is quite far and it will attempt to help calm anyone within its sphere of influence. Let's press ahead."

OPERATION: SUPPLY RUN
DIMENSION: 270B
LOCATION: HD 40307 G
TEAM: Delta

A sickeningly wet splat caught the lizard's attention. She turned her head just in time to see the lead spider topple backwards. It landed hard and flailed its legs in an effort to knock the dead insect aside. The action bought the team precious minutes.

"Hurry!" the lizard wasted no time in leading them away from the clearing. "Not far." The scales along her back took on an umber hue as flames rose behind the group. The spiders would pursue, yes, but they would need to go around the fire in order to capture their breakfast. The lizard would not allow them the chance. Her footfalls increased into a trot.

The "trailer" turned out to be the equivalent of a discarded soup tin with a small slit along one side. It was just wide enough for Romulus to squeeze through. The container's contents were long gone. The lizard had replaced them with hand-fashioned pillows and seats made of thick bark strips. It was at once reminiscent of a child's storybook picture, the sort where mice wore clothing and lived like men. That sweet image was promptly dashed by the overwhelming amounts of broken down hardware strewn to one side. The lizard ushered them to one side and then muscled a heavy strip over the slit. A soft glow radiated from her as she crossed the narrow space to flick on the overhead light - revealing exactly what the Delta Team was looking for: those containers Romulus so desperately needed.

"I am Mepsidadelti Heltamip," though her nose scales shifted colors with the vowel sounds, the lizard spoke without moving her lips. She graciously smiled at the group as she loosened the scarf around her neck. "You can call me Meps. I am projecting my thoughts. By my species' law, I'm required to tell you that I am psionic. But you-"

"ssskkksssshhhh-ome in, Delta. This-sssskkkkkksshhhh-C&C. We have-ssshkk-mergency here. Divert to pick up new-shhhhskksshhhh-Earth. Artist. Do you cop-ssskkssshh..." Myra's tinny voice stuttered between static as it blared into Nila's earpiece. The construct squealed and clapped a hand to her offended body part.

Meps' eyes widened as she took in this particular visitor. A psionic conversation took place that not even this writer is privy to. Meps turned towards Romulus and thrust out her hand. "Your databall. Give it to me. This dimension's wavelengths, you must align for."

BUILDING

"Ho shit!" the bottom hem of the young priest's robes flicked Sentia's ear tips as the cyborg hopped over the cat. "Sorry!" Marcus called out mid run, but turned back immediately. An evacuation order was in effect. The cat couldn't be left behind. He lifted her from the floor and cradled her to his chest firmly but gently. "Sorry," he said a second time, "But I can't leave you to die."

Familiar locks of hair swept past his face the moment he opened the stairwell door. A relieved sigh escaped him.

It suddenly dawned on him that this was the closest they'd been in over a month, no thanks to the old Cyborg's taskmaster mindset and his own unending lack of a personal life. He'd resorted to slipping sweet nothings under her door early each morning. The tiny paper slips, carefully torn from the back of a prayer book, bore short poems or heartfelt greetings written in his own painstakingly precise print.

His hand tugged his cowl back to reveal a weary expression and the five o'clock shadow darkening his cheeks. An organic eye set its gaze on Sentia. "Well, we can't leave her to die, either. Wouldn't be civil."

Marcus took the stairs two at a time to catch up with the godling. He presumed she was heading for the hospital a floor above. "Giovenith! Hey, what happened?"

THE WARREN

Damned machine was correct, of course. Thaddeus merely grunted at Opa's suggestion however. Work kept his mind off shit. No work meant sitting at home, alone. No Naomi humming in the background. No Neste prattling on. Not even Marcus or Wren there to remind him he was something more than the sum of his parts. His eyes pinched closed, and his jaw set. We aren't going down this alley today. Not today, friend machine.

The grim expression faded into a relaxed amusement. "You want into Itum's apartment in order to make long distance phone calls and rifle through his drawers while he's away?" The old cyborg snorted. "There's hope for you yet, Opa."

An elderly man in a blue robe presented himself at the doorway. "Please pardon the intrusion. There's been a gas explosion on the eight floor. We've shut off the gas but a general evacuation has been called. All hands on deck for us, Brother Usseio. There are repairs to be made." The man vanished back the way he came, leaving Thaddeus and Opa in peace.

"You see that?" the wrench in the old cyborg's hand wagged as he gestured towards the door. "Not 'People may be trapped' or 'People may be suffering'. No. 'There are repairs to be made."

He shook his head. "Yet here you are, Opa. You have need, and preface it with concern for my well-being. Who's the better at being human? The man that's forgotten how to be, or the machine that doesn't approach everything with cold efficiency?"

RACHE AND WILLOW

It sounds perhaps cruel or spiteful to state that Rache breakfasted on Pansy's emotions. He was a being composed of nothing but, and so her doubts and fears, while bitter in taste, were still sustenance for him. But the meat - that which sustained him - was the tiny morsel of self hope hidden beneath the weight of her conformity. Her desire to exist while living up to her potential rather than be shackled by her duty. Had Rache not been a fragment of Klaus, he would have scorned these feelings. But he was the stuff of honor, and if one could not honor who they were inside, no amount of glory on a battlefield would replace what was lacking from the start. Though he could not read her mind to gain understanding of what he tasted, he silently praised her for daring to allow herself to dream.

Yet her emotions were nothing compared to the melancholic banquet rising from Cloud Duster. Rache's eyes studied the henhose remains before flitting back to observe Cloud Duster. "We won't hide our wings," he murmured, "We have the talisman. Best to present ourselves as Pegasi rather than to portray ourselves as spies and the FUCK IS THAT?!"

Never, ever had it dawned on Rache that his second favorite toys would exist in a Pony dimension. His eyes widened, though not from fear, and his lips pulled back to reveal the sharp edges of Chaos twisted molars - a badge of honor that identified all cultists from mundane beings.

"Fly, you fools!" Damn, he'd always wanted to use that line. And, in truth, the zombies seemed to lack wings. Rache forced down the giddiness that was threatening to overwhelm his sensibilities, and then focused his efforts into activating the strange gauntlets on his arms.

A rotting mare's foul stench invaded his nostrils as she reared to reach him. It was a pleasant smell, reminiscent of home. Rache laughed as his axe cleaved her skull in two.

YUNA AND AEGIS

Yuna nodded in encouragement as Aegis extended gratitude to Sky Wishes. She was prepared to say so herself when the screams caught her attention. Their companion bolted, and Yuna trotted off after Aegis. Her trot quickly turned into a gallop as another sound rose from the woods - the joyful noise of a daemon's deep laughter.

Oh damnit, Hans! Oh, no! Please, don't let him be killing Earth Ponies!

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

OPERATION: SUPPLY RUN
DIMENSION: 270B
LOCATION: HD 40307 G
TEAM: Delta

On arrival to the alleged trailer, Romulus had sheathed his sword and slinged his shotgun before heading in, but it was less out of courtesy for their stranger and more out of the fact that it wouldn't have been practical for him to have either of them out in such a small and cramped (for him at least) space. He had still been wary of the lizard as he couldn't imagine any kind or weak soul to have been able to survive long on a planet like this, he figured there must be something more to her, especially since from the looks of any residence in this shack, she was likely alone and probably for some time. If that were the case, then he couldn't imagine how her mental facilities were holding up, at least she didn't appeared completely feral to them so far.

When she lit an overhead light and in doing so revealed to them the hydrogen and fuel containers they (mostly he) needed, the General realized they had inadvertently headed into the location they needed to go for the supplies they came here for in the first place. Though he knew he probably should've known that already, given that this was really the only standing structure around. Before he could point out to their host that those containers were exactly what he needed, she had psionically introduce herself to them. Before anything else could've been said of course, Myra tried to reach them over comms, and Romulus too suffered irritating pain in his ear. He could just barely pick up what Myra had said to them, but he managed to piece it together that something must have happened at the building and they needed them back right now for a emergency of sorts.

"YES Myra, we copy! We've gotten what we came here for." He manged to say to Myra before Meps then psionically spoke to him personally. He'll be a liar if he haven't already had plenty of encounters with psionics before, friend or foe, but he rarely ever gotten used to them and he always felt a bit of nausea afterwards. From what Meps was saying to him, it proved to him that she was very knowledgeable of them, and already knew about the databall. She was no native, that's for sure, but was she a resident then? It was very likely, but then there's the possibility that she's an agent for the Devourers and this was all a ploy to attempt to infiltrate into Gallimaufry Mundi.

There was always a chance with these things and he acknowledged them, but he gut-felt that Meps was genuinely a resident that was lost and this was their chance to bring her home, or at least as much of a home that the building is for her. He took the databall from where he had kept it safe in his suit, and handed it to her. "Alright Meps, bring us home... Oh and we need those containers full of hydrogen and fuel, it was kinda the reason we came here in the first place." He had then said to her, but then he realized that something was amiss. "Wait a minute, why didn't Myra mention that you were here as well? I mean surely we would've known that if we knew. What happened to you Meps?" He then asked her.

"I still think we should use the window!"  Nick retorted over the general din.  What, did Sakarias think he was suggesting that they - oh.  Thanks to the Spirit of Soothing, he became calm enough to see things more rationally.  It had indeed sounded that way, and the robot was new.  "I'm NOT suggesting we just jump, okay?  There are a lot of people who could catch us if we can get a message through!"  He was still thinking of Sandy, but he wasn't the only one.  "Several Residents can fly, and many have magic. Even if everyone else who could has left, Kale could make a net or rope to climb down...I think."  He'd stayed nearby, given how important it was that her pain not become distracting.  "You can, right?"

Adri, looking up, explained that her ability to diffuse into mist had gotten her through previously and she hence could take a message...  Meanwhile, Elka's strong legs had allowed her to kick her way out of her rubble cave and partway to Sakarias - her bare feet were getting sore as a result, and quite possibly injured.

---

7, hall
Rmwtyliin, meanwhile, felt rather helpless. She had some medical training - would it be enough, now that it counted? Would they move the rubble in time for it to start counting?

Would she even remember? Fortunately, Anais summoned a Spirit of Soothing. Rmwtyliin's facial muscles relaxed, almost imperceptibly - I can handle this. Walking to Giovenith, the girl decided to spend the time reviewing what she knew - and, or course, helping with smaller rubble. That brought another possibility to mind. "Is there anything we can use as wheels? If we could get them under, big pieces could be rolled away."

Insidious: 7th floor

Insidious did the best she could in this confusing situation. Unpacking various medical device and prepping a trio of ReAnima shots to revive anyone who hadn’t been dead for too long she surveyed the damage and looked for ways she could be of more. She soaked in the small things going on around her, Kales rescue by the resourceful Nick and various people trying to support the building to prevent further collapses.

Finally she was able to thaw out the green glowing syringes and send a quick pulse of advanced vanish point electricity through the bottle reinvigorating the once frozen ReAnima and making it safe for consumption by the recently deceased.

“I have ReAnima ready!” The Luxan said to no one in particular “We have anyone dead for less than five minutes or on the verge of passing?”
