Deep Haven | OOC thread

Deep Haven - An abandoned research station, mysteriously devoid of all animals.
- The Western Isles map dispatch.

Image

See a larger map of Deep Haven here.

Background

Deep Haven is a mysterious and hair-raising little place. Fishermen from nearby islands seldom sail there (when they do, they usually ask for better payment), and rumors of strange phenomena and otherworldly happenings and sightings are frequent. The island itself is densely forested, and a single mountain ridge extends between its north and south tips. Its climate is partially tropical, and an almost contant mist envelops its highlands.

It is common knowledge that Deep Haven used to be a lively and fruitful research station, in the fields of biology, chemistry, and earth sciences. Several abandoned research sites are located on the island, and a keen visitor to there may notice deserted vehicles and other equimpment in various places. Four small villages on the south-eastern corner of the island (between Haven Bay and Lonely Peak) were once the residence of the scientists who worked there, but today it is nothing but the final resting place of some crumbling structures.

However, Deep Haven is not completely abandoned. In fact, a native population of roughly 600 people live in about 20 small and self-centered communities, mainly across the south-eastern portion of the island. These people call themselves Tuomi (the local word for resistant), and they don't like strangers.

Recently, several Tuomi had mysteriously disappeared. So, for the first time in many years, the locals reluctantly agreed to let foreigners back on the island, to help investigate and find out what is happening...

Rules

  • This is an "open world" RP - any character may move freely on the island and interact with anything on it. I'll be RPing the local population and anything else players may encounter.
  • Keep all OOC matters to the OOC thread (or to TGs, if you want to ask me something in private). No OOC in this thread at all.
  • Take your time. No rush. This is a slow pace RP.

Must... Get there. Must... Get... To Minar. Must... Wait. What is this? What is that sound? Ah! There it is! Must Get it!

The afternoon was colder than usual, and the fog made running home impossible. Oniru slowed down gradually, constantly looking around in fear and twitching with every little sound. Shivers ran down his spine and back again to the back of his neck, making his hair bristle and his skin prickle. "Hello," he shouted in his language into the milky blanket, "is anybody there?" But no one responded.

Suddenly several paces were heard. Shivering, Oniru immediately stopped and turned around, but he could see nothing. "Who is this?" he called out anxiously, barely keeping himself from falling down to the muddy ground. Still, no one answered... Yet the paces increased in rate and in volume, and Oniru could hold himself no more. He almost fell as he broke into a hysterical run. The sound of paces followed him for several meters, until he was hit by a sharp blow to the head and crashed to the side of the trail.

That night, in the little community of Minar on the island of Kao (or "Deep Haven", as the foreigners called it), Oniru's parents stood outside of their home, crying. Minar's elder bowed down in front of them, holding Oniru's empty and blood-stained bag. "I'm sorry," he said, "but we could not find his body." The young man's parents accepted the bag, and with great sorrow thanked the elder and retrned to the comfort of their home.

Ramun, the elder, turned around to walk back to his own home. A few days earlier, Ramun was the one who called for outside help. Most community elders in Deep Haven could speak and understand English well enough to talk to foreigners, but very few of them were as intelligent and as welcoming as he.

The Corvettes and the Independence Class LCS of Task Force Granite glided gracefully through the soft waves. The sea not being very rough that day. The Sun shone down brightly upon the polished, salt glistened metal that made up the frame of the vessels. To the right of the farthest right vessel the sea was much darker as a pod of dolphins herded a large school of fish for themselves to eat.

At the stern of the LCS Elizabeth and Harold sat with their legs over the edge. He sighed, "This mission we're going on is pretty freaky right? It's not just me? I mean honestly what are we doing here while a war is going on up North. Especially to a place where most foreigners aren't allowed."

Elizabeth just looked at him and shook her head, "It's not just you. I'm suffice to say a little pissed off that we are going here for no other reason than to pretty much just check the place out."

Harold laughed, "Yeah. What a great mission. What's the mission? We don't know but we want you guys to find out. He got up, "C'mon, we should get our gear to final prep before we are sent out into the wastes" She followed him and they slid past the two AH-6s and Seahawks into the internal parts of the ship to their ready room. There they prepped their gear.

Elizabeth looked at her gear. FN F2000, M9, ammo, Machete, Survival Rucksack, SatNav Phone, Journal, Money. She gave a light swing of the machete, "I like this." Harold looked through the rucksack, "We got a lot of stuff in here. We could survive out here for months... I hope that's not what they planned for."

Elizabeth smiled, "Hoping its only going to be a week." They both went about prepping their gear as the ships got closer to the destination. Deep Haven.

Sangmin checked his now half-empty wallet for signs of life. He shook his head. At least it's not my money, he thought, although the miser in him was still reluctant to spend so much on a simple drop-off by local fishermen.

Brushing his messy hair with his hand, he looked down where the dock met the earth. He knew he would have to make contact with someone in charge soon, but where that person was was anyone's guess. So little intel on this one.

He started walking for a few minutes along the coast when he spotted a figure a few hundred feet away. "Hello!" he shouted, trying his best to make it as friendly as possible, and checking to make sure his pistol was concealed well on his waist.

Mart-jan walked onto the muddy coast. He had always hated other people, so he took his personal rowboat and all of his supplies to a shore more north than the docks. He had hired a fisherman to take him and his boat a mile from shore. He unloaded his supplies and left the boat there. He would return and radio when his expedition was done. "Well, Rembrandt, we made it" he spoke to his falcon. With his bag on his back and his falcon on his shoulder, he started walking. He found that he was close to a village. "Ah, come on. I was hoping to be alone. Well better at least be friendly to one village." He looked on his map.

Nar Sahe was it's name.

Ralph Mendoza sighed deeply. He was an self-employed investigator, with a background of living off the wild. He decided to take this case to further his career. He continued to the island overseas.

He looked back at his supplies, basic navigation gear, hunting gear, cartography gear, and survival gear. He hoped it was enough to sustain him, and he hoped that the island had suficent sustenance to live upon. He had a feeling he would be living off the wild for a while.

His boat quickly approached the island, opened recently to foreigners. He smiled as he approached the island. His boat coasted to a stop. He stood up, composed himself and stepped ashore. There, he decided to wait before travelling to the nearby village. He delved into his survival gear and used his flint and some of his tinder with some brush from the nearby trees to light a fire. He quietly, and calmly sat down and waited patiently.

The wooden boat abruptly moved from one side to the other and, sometimes, it looked like it was going to capsize and leave both men, Reibel Barys and his peculiar chauffeur, a Tuomi fisher, alone in the sea. Perhaps, choosing such a mode of transportation had not been the best decision of his life but, at least, it was the cheapest option. Reibel thought some dollars would be a really helpful incentive to obtain information from the natives, so he had to be cautious and avoid wasting enormous sums of money on trasport.

Deep Haven appeared on the horizon like a thin stripe of vegetation. If the map was right, they were heading to Nar-Hiote, the village where the Tuomi fisher lived. "Far away from home", thought the writer. But, did he have a place he could call "home" anymore? He doubted it.

He sipped some whisky from his hip flask, not only to forget those thoughts, but also to clear his throat. He was going to talk.

"So, tell me, what's your name, boy?" he said while putting the hip flask back into the backpack.

Siuen squinted, looking down the trail at the man calling towards him. The man surely wasn't local, but prior to the shout Siuen wasn't sure. He increased his walking pace and slowly lifted his hand in a welcoming gesture. He walked until he could see the Sangmin's face and then stopped. He took out a small note from his pocket, and handed it over to the foreigner.

"This, for you. Ramun from Minar sent. Thank you for coming." Siuen pointed at the text and nodded, trying to make Sangmin read it. The note contained a message from Ramun, the elder of Minar:

Greetings, foreigner! I am Ramun, the person who called for help on behalf of my people. I wrote several such notes, and gave them to some of the dock workers and coastal traders, in case any of them would meet any of you. If you are reading this, we will soon meet. Please find your way to Minar, not far away from the South Dock, and ask for me when you get there. Thank you.

Siuen waited for Sangmin to finish reading and then smiled a wide childish smile. "I take you Minar, ah?" He started walking, without waiting for an answer.

Nar-Sahe was one of the smallest villages in an island of small villages. Only a few low wooden structures could be seen around the main road, and several more were built on a small hill overlooking it from the west, south of the river. Four families lived there, with little to no connection with the other communities. Two young men - Both from the same family - disappeared in recent weeks.

An old man was sitting by himself near the road, following Mart-jan with his eyes. "Man," he called eventually, "you are very far from anywhere worth being, and very close to anywhere worth escaping." He got up, and assisted by his cane he very slowly approached Mart-jan. "I would have escaped myself, if I could." He then turned around to go back to his sitting spot.

The boy smiled. "I am Hiun, mister," he said enthusiastically, "I thank you very much for the money. We will be on the docks in minutes."

Sangmin quickly followed along, the weight of his backpack flopping on his lower back. "What's... your... name?" he said, speaking softly in order to be as clear as possible. "And what can you tell me of this Ramun?"

Mendoza stood up, and extinguished his fire. He pulled out his cartography kit, and looked at his most updated map of Deep Haven. He looked for the nearest village on the map, and started walking that way. The village was, according to the map, listed as "Kaunta".

Hiun spoke a very good English. He didn't have the best accent, but Barys wasn't precisely the one to judge him. The Leisterian accent was considered by the majority of Anglophones as an ugly and rough one.

"Oh, I see". The boat was eventually getting closer to the docks. "I'm Reibel. So, you 're from this village, right? Nar-Hiote? Did you have... 'problems' there too? You know..."

Roxanne grimaced as a wave hit the side of her dinghy. That was the third that had nearly capsized her, but the ship's crew had been unwilling to take her to shore, so she'd had to make her own way. Her dad was always telling her she should get out more, live in the wild for a bit. Well this island looked pretty wild, and she'd heard of a mystery to be solved, so it should be a win-win. Assuming she didn't starve to death, of course.

The boat ground on to the shore, and Roxanne stepped out. She wasn't sure exactly where she was, but judging by the position of the sun it looked like she was on the south coast. The mountains stretched up to her left, and there were signs of a settlement of some kind in the foothills. Roxanne headed towards the smoke column.

It was a hard trek, but after a while she arrived at a small village. She decided to try and find a local, and hope that local spoke English.

"Oh," Siuen sighed as he walked, his back still turned to Sangmin. He spoke and looked back every few seconds, to make sure Sangmin was listening. "I am Siuen, from Tunil village, not far." All the while, he kept smiling, as if not smiling would mean hostility. "Ramun is head of Minar, where we go. He is very smart and old, and he knows many things. He knows how many Tuomi disappear and where... The other heads tell him. Ramun say you come to help, so I help him."

Siuen suddenly stopped and turned around until he completely faced Sangmin, and approached carefully. "I think," he whispered, looking directly into Sangmin's eyes, "Ramun was a friend of... The scientists." He stood there for a while, his eyes moving around in discomfort. "We go," he uttered as he turned back to walk.

Kaunta was one of the four communities considered to be the "suburbs" of Minar, the largest village on the island. The other three were Nar-Hiote, Goua-Ba, and Tunil - Each suburb roughly corresponded to one of the four winds in relation to Minar. Still, not a few kilometers separated each of the communities, and the locals used the roads and trails in between a lot.

The village was the home of eight families, and strangely none of its residents have disappeared.

People don't come back home - Evil demons kill them and take the bodies. A friend said to me that he can hear the demons sometimes."

It was the first time in several years that the men in Esarma had seen a foreign visitor. The village was practically a dead community, and the only people there were hard-working men of the nearby villages, who used the place as a rest stop on their way to and back from the forest.

A bunch of muscular and suspicious individuals were sitting around a table and eating plain bread. They all looked at Roxanne in shock and waited to see what would happen next.

Mendoza arrived at the village. He plans to gather information here before travelling to another village. As he entered the village, he started to look around for the elder, or someone with knowledge of the surroundigns to see if they could help him figure out what was going on here.

As he finished the sentence, the boat finally reached the mainland and Hiun moored it to the little pier. Whithout getting out of the watercraft, Reibel, extremely interested on what he just said, asked another question.

"Hmm... That's terrible, indeed. Hiun, do you know if there is any person that has survived an encounter with one of those demons?

Deep Haven was a beautiful island. Lush green rain forests covered the entirety of the isle, forming a brilliant array of color that Angela Duwal couldn't find back home in Keomora. Leaning on the edge of the frigate sent to drop her and her partner Trevor Yi, she pondered at what she will face. Tuomi missing, a mysterious lack of animals, and numerous scientific installations, it was a riddle that was begging to be solved. Anxious to get of the boat, she took one last look at Deep Haven before retiring into her bunk. She knew she will need every last ounce for her strength as a shadow of dread started to form in her gut.

Sangmin's eyes widened as he listened, pondering the strangeness of it all. Over-hunting? Disease? Animal testing? He had some theories on this strange place but had no evidence to confirm or deny any of them. "Tell me, Siuen," he called after him. "Are there really no animals here?"

Mart-jan called to the old man with the cane. "Sir, I do not worry, for God protects me. Even if he chooses not to, I do not worry. I am an old man, and I don't have much life left. Now if you would be kind enough sir, could you tell me of the dangers along the path to this village?" He points to his map at the village of Gurnam.

"See," Siuen gestured to the north, where down the road a village could be seen. "Minar, we get there."

"God?" the old man reacted in surprise, and pondered for a few moments. "I... I have not heard people speak of god in so many years. My god had deserted me, my family, and this entire island."

He sighed at length. "The only danger on the way is the Sahe river, right here down the road. Recent rains have flooded the road crossing it. Other than that, I think it is safe."

Mart-jan looked at the man with pity. He smiled and said "Thank you for your help. I am saddened to hear of your lack of hearing of God. I don't know if you believe in the same one as me, but my God, the true God of all, loves all of his children. He watches you, sad that you are in danger and that you do not hear of him, but maybe that is why he placed us here to meet. Would you like a copy of his word before I leave?"

Brilliant thought Roxanne. This is not going to be easy. She opened up her tablet, hoping that somewhere in her translation app there would be something close to this language. That last phrase sounded like "Alpha Site," a place she remembered seeing on a map of the island. Maybe if these natives could help her get there, she would have more success. She brought her right hand up and made her first two fingers "walk" along her left palm, then said "Alpha site?" She shrugged for added effect, hoping that would indicate that she had no idea where she was going.

The man who spoke to her didn't know what to do. He looked at his friends around the table, and they all looked back at him. "Ah, ahu sefa samaud Alpha sait," he said, pointing eastwards and down the hill. He turned around until he stood facing the mountain above the camp and pointed upwards while repeating "no" and moving his hand to the sides. He then turned to the opposite direction, pointed down the road and a bit inland, nodded and said "ah!"

"Yes, mister," Hiun answered, "Minar is south of us." He thought for a few moments and a shy smile appeared on his face. "Please, mister, beware of a man with the name Ramun. He controls Minar... And please, don't tell him what I said."

Roxanne gave the man a thumbs-up and said "Thank you," before turning and heading down the hill. After a while, she got to a fork in the road. She wasn't sure what she was meant to do here, but the man in the village had been pointing in a general eastwards direction, so she turned to her left. Reaching another fork in the road, she realised she now had no idea where she was meant to go. Maybe if she headed inland, she'd find the Alpha Site. She turned left.

After walking for an hour or so, she reached another village. Maybe people in this village would speak a little English, and maybe they would be able to help her further.
