Is Donald Trump the new Theodore Roosevelt?

Postby Tavarica » Tue Apr 05, 2016 7:20 am

Since I started following the Trump campaign, I couldn't help but see the striking similarities between the 2 men. Both are not too friendly with their own parties, from New York, from wealthy families, flamboyant, charismatic, energetic and use the force of their personalities to get their way.

Donald has far more in common with the various South American populists than any US presidents.

No. Not even a little bit. Not a tiny bit, not a small amount, not at all. Teddy was a former soldier, who believed heftily in regulation and in monopoly busting. Trump is a neo-conservative lunatic who lies like you and I breathe who never served and whose policies are misguided at best, potentially ruinous at worst.

Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive who fought for protections for American workers against their employers and to protect valuable American landmarks from corporate exploitation through the National Parks program. He is nothing like Donald Trump. It would be more accurate to say that Donald Trumpp is Roosevelt's antithesis.

I know exactly what Trump stands for. 99% of what he espouses would make Roosevelt vomit in torrents.

No, he's not. He used to espouse that, but now is a far-right idealogue who wants to punish women for getting abortions.

These people are describing Trump's campaign and saying that it is the opposite. Trump is very similar to Roosevelt.

That's like saying Bush and Obama are similar. They are very, very different kinds of people.

Plus, Theodore isn't a terrible person like trump.

If Trump gets shot, correctly identifies that since he is not coughing blood that he has not been shot in the lung and doesn't need to go to hospital for two hours, stands up on a podium in front of a crowd while blood seeps through his shirt, proceeds to speak calmly about his situation and continue to talk in a manner for two hours, I will begin to associate the two.

I'm more inclined, however, to believe Trump is going to scream hysterically and be anything but calm, like the average person who gets shot.

I can't comment on the former, but he sure as fuck doesn't believe in the latter.

As close as he comes to the latter is lambasting about immigrants "taking American jobs" which by and large, they aren't in the first place.

No. He doesn't. He has no policy ideas except for vague promises to "make America great again". Here are his policies from his website.

1. We're gonna build a wall, and I'm gonna make Mexico pay for it. Not an exaggeration, or byte taken out of context, word for word what is on his website.

2. We're gonna ask congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

3. We're gonna dick around with China's trade (I'm paraphrasing here).

4. We're gonna slash taxes to a maximum of 15%. Which totally won't destroy the Government's ability to finance its projects.

There's a few other stupid bits, but these are the main four.

He is not a good man, he is not a good candidate, he would not be a good president, and I am terrified, utterly terrified, by the thought of him becoming president.

You've made me defend Trump, so I hope you're happy about that.

But that situation is being taken wildly out of context. Which is a massive shame, because you don't need to take Trump out of context to take him to task.
If, went the hypothetical discussion, abortions were illegal - there would have to be some sort of punishment devised for women who fall foul of such hypothetical legislation.
Still a pretty shit thing to be saying given his garbage approval ratings amongst women, but, y'know, it's hardly even "bad for a Republican" these days.

This is absolutely not the same as saying "women who have abortions should be punished" because the situation and context is radically different.
