Prime Minister's Office, Fuller House
Tarana, Caldan Union of the Resurgent Dream

The Prime Minister's personal office was a spacious, wood-paneled room located in the a back corner of Fuller House. Despite the hectic activity of the PMO, it was possible to experience an illusion of serenity there. Access was zealously guarded by the Prime Minister's personal assistant, Michael McGarry, and on two sides French windows looked out over the small garden behind the building. In the beginning of his premiership, Oliver Welton had sometimes gone for a walk in that garden when he needed to think but no longer. He was too conscious of the security detail which fell into step behind him the second he stepped outside. He was too conscious of the fact that, unseen by him, his stepping outside caused the entire Fuller House security detachment to shift focus and one or two of the regular Royal Caldan Police patrols around downtown Tarana to make a point of driving past just in case the fence, the guards, and the state-of-the-art surveillance equipment weren't quite enough. It made him feel not so much powerful as awkward. Twenty years ago, Prime Ministers had walked among their people with less security than the average Caer Gawen celebrity used today. A century ago, even the sovereign had only needed guards for ceremonial occasions. Easier, Welton thought, to just look through the bullet-proof glass.

Oliver Welton was a tall man and in good health but he was also a bit on the thin side and not especially imposing. His dark hair, soft brow eyes, and wry half-smile had helped him seem a charming and charismatic figure when he was seeking office, even as it had gotten him mocked by some less friendly voices, but that all seemed a thing of the past. His hairline had started receding in the last two years and he'd gotten more than a few gray hairs. His domestic agenda had gone well enough. The economy was sound and the Caldan people generally prosperous. His foreign policy had not. The Western Atlantic remained as divided as ever and the Caldan Union had few relationships outside the region. The old regional treaties were almost defunct, despite continued nominal adherence from all their members. A few largely symbolic attempts to reconnect with the region and the world had not gone well. A royal tour had had to be cancelled due to the Queen's pregnancy. A gala had attracted a great deal of attention at first but it had sort of petered out. Welton doubted any other sweeping gesture would fare differently. A foreign policy of engagement would require specific contacts with specific countries.

Welton stood and began to pace his office. He was not normally a pacer but he was strangely full of nervous energy today. The country was restless. He was restless. He was anxious about his country's place in the world. And not for nothing. Just three months ago, Parliament had passed, at his urging, the Constitutional Democracy Act. The Act mandated that two proposed constitutional amendments be submitted to the voters concurrent with the next election for the House of Representatives. The first amendment would remove Dominion status from the Caldan constitution. One year after being passed, every Caldan Dominion would be required to hold a referendum on whether its people desired to be an independent, sovereign state or a Caldan Province with equal rights and obligations to every other. The second amendment would alter the composition of the Senate to include a majority of elected Senators for the first time. It would reduce the number of reserve seats to a total of 30 and provide for the election of five Senators from each Province by means of a single transferable vote system of proportional representation and one Senator from the Grand Duchy of Tarana by means of preferential voting. Senate elections would be held concurrent with any House of Representatives election held more than five years after the last Senate election with the first to be held during the first House of Representatives election held after the amendment passes. Amendments to the Caldan constitution are ratified by the people if they receive the votes of a 2/3rds supermajority of voters in a majority of provinces or a majority of votes in 2/3rds of the provinces, provided that they also receive a simple majority of total votes.

Welton had no immediate plans to call an election. If he did call one, he had no idea if the amendments would be approved by the voters or not. There was widespread support but the threshold for ratification was a high one. He also had no idea if he wanted it to pass or not. The reform of the Senate was desperately needed and the constitutional status of the Dominions no less important. As things stood, it was borderline colonialism. But he still feared the outcome. The admission of the Dominions fully into the Caldan Union as Provinces would significantly change the composition of the nation. Their independence would significantly alter the geopolitics of the Western Atlantic and possibly endanger the Caldan Union's relationship with her neighbours. All of which made Welton more anxious about his foreign policy.

He sat back down and pressed a button on his desk, 'Michael, is Janet Parker in the building?'

'Yes, Prime Minister,' came McGarry's dry, officious voice.

'Have her come in here,' Welton said and then waited.

Janet Parker was a short, stocky woman with black curls. She smiled brightly as she stepped into the office. 'You wanted to speak to me, Prime Minister.'

'Yes, Janet. Have a seat. I was actually interested in some of the foreign policy ideas you recommended,' he said with a small smile, gesturing her to a chair on the opposite side of my desks.

'You read my recommendations? I didn't know...' she sputtered.

'You gave it to Toby. Toby gave it to me. It's something I'd been asking about,' he said, leaning forward attentively as she sat. 'The goal is to make a bit of a return to the world scene but without anything unduly dramatic, like intervening in some war, or pointless, like a convention for the sake of having a convention. I liked your idea on the key role of culture.'

'I was thinking about Lise Charest's upcoming visit to Pantocratoria,' Parker said. 'I think we can do more to promote Caldan culture internationally. Not enough Caldan artists do true world tours. I also think we can host more foreign artists here. The government can help or at least can help facilitate. Relationships are ultimately between peoples are all. I think these sorts of contacts create the foundation for the more formal diplomacy.'

'They might. Get on the phone with Selena Lopez, Nicki Pall, CoraT, or whoever else and see if they'd be interested in doing more touring abroad, possibly with a little government assistance, at least with the advertising. Then see who we can book to play in Tarana for Halloween.' He smiled slightly. 'This is just sort of a wedge, of course. Something to get people talking. We'll also be establishing new embassies, signing on to more student exchange programmes, that sort of thing. The situation shall develop from there.'

Parker smiled, 'I think it's a good idea.'

Welton stood with a small shrug. 'It's just an ice breaker, but I suppose it gives better value to more people than a courtship ball. Remember when those were incessant.

Parker laughed as she stood. 'They're just as common now. But the queen and her sister are married.'

'They have other relatives,' Welton said thoughtfully. 'I'll ask about that, I think.'

Fineberg, New Edom

"I don't want to go," said the Heir, Princess Jocasta, drumming her fingers on the arm of her chair.

"The King wants you to go," said Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, the Royal Master of Offices. "Why don't you want to go?" he said quickly as he saw her chin lifting and her mouth tightening.

"Because they have a socialist government and they are trying to trick us into dropping the Morality Act," replied Princess Jocasta. "I don't see the point. It's far away from New Edom. Dr. Aphek says that it will cost more to ship goods to and from there, it's not even in our region. Dr. Aphek says that it will be like dealing with Adiron, more complications."

Prince Enoch smiled faintly. "Well, Dr. Aphek's opinions are noted. The King would like you to go to Tarana."

"And we're just getting started in Ashab!" Princess Jocasta exclaimed. 'It was my idea, and now other people are going to be dealign with it!"

"Well," said Prince Enoch, "That's government for you. If it's any consolation, I'm going too."

"Oh that's a huge consolation," said Princess Jocasta irritably.

"We are each one another's cross to bear," said the Master of Offices drily. "But there are good reasons, if you'd care to here. First of all: until the Queen conceives or something, you are the Heir, and the King wants you to continue to learn diplomacy and to get experience. This is what is called a safe trip. A potentially friendly nation, a constitutional monarchy whose approach to legal and economic matters we may end up emulating. It will be helpful to the government's domestic policies for you to learn what you can while you are there. I will act as a liaison between you and the government and government elements there, assisted by Jerome and others. And I suspect that the King would like you to do somethign eh and I both learned while in the Navy: how to follow orders even when you don't like them."

Princess Jocasta looked away a moment, her face flushed, her bosom rising and falling rapidly, and said in a measured tone, "I am utterly devoted to the service of my cousin the King and to my country."

"I was sure of it,' said Prince Enoch with a faint smile. "My staff will be in communication with your own about the travel plans and the itinerary."

Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain commanded a staff of nearly 1500, but he rarely met any of them. His role was to coordinate Palace actvity and act as the main liaison between the King, Queen and the Government. The Royal Household was largely run through Count Merodach, the grand Chamberlain, who in turn was largely guided by his staff as that rather friendly often drunk young man could, Enoch believed, probably have difficulty running a rowboat. But the under-chamberlain's office did their job very well. The Heir's personal household--her personal staff, servants and so on were organized by her Matron of Honour, Countess Emilia Jabbok, a close friend of the Dowager Queen's who had looked after Jocasta since she had returned from Whitehaven Academy to Court. Her advisory staff were run by Colonel Marcus Josephus, (eldest son of General Thomas Joephus, the Director of Military Intelligence) her devoted dog. Enoch despised and distrusted both of these officials but was having trouble getting rid of them due to their patronage from the Dowager. Between them and the Palace's Press Secretary's office and the Ministry of Police he coordinated the trip.

His concerns included the following:
- Were there any security concerns of late either regionally or nationally in the Caldan Union of which the Allied States needed to be concerned?
- What would the weather be like?
- Would the Heir be able to fly in on the Royal Executive Flight?
- Could a liaison office be established for the Council Police to be able to handle security in partnership with the Caldan Union's appropriate services?
- What kind of plan for the trip did the Caldan government have in mind?
- The Allied States' government wanted to offer trade talks. It was proposed that the Minister of Finance, Count Thomas Lalery, along with the Royal Master of Offices, Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, would accompany the Heir in order to meet with the Prime Minister, Mr. Welton. Would this be possible?
- The Heir would be personally accompanied by a matron of honour, two ladies in waiting, her private secretary, three maids, a hairdresser, her personal physician and nurse, and an honour guard of twenty members of the Royal Cavalry Guards.
- a detail of 12 Council Police attached to the Royal Protection Service would also accompany the Heir.
- There would be no desire to in any way embarrass the Caldan government, so discretion about the security would be naturally followed as much as possible.
- The Heir's husband, Prince Michael of Dakmoor, might accompany her. Would his addition if it were last minute present any problems?

In turn, Prince Enoch closed off his letter with "I of course am glad to receive any concerns on the part of your government and the royal household of Her Majesty Queen Gwendolyn, and look forward to a reply..."

Elections had come and gone since Welton had decided on his next big push. He had had little to show for it. There were at least somewhat improved relations with New Edom, of course. Mizzi intended to undertake a musical tour of that country and their heir was coming here. Still, the overall weakening of the Caldan Union's position in the world and the disastrous attack on the embassy in Torontia had left the government weakened. Welton led a minority government by the time planning of the royal visit began. It was a chastened government which responded to the Edomite inquiries.

- Were there any security concerns of late either regionally or nationally in the Caldan Union of which the Allied States needed to be concerned?

There have been no significant attacks in Caldas proper since 2005. There was a recent attack on the Caldan Embassy in Torontia which is still being investigated. Extremist groups operate in the Dominions of Alekthos and Marlund including Alekthos Jihad, Marlund White Resistance, and the People's Red Army of Marlund.

- What would the weather be like?

A high of -18°C and a low of -24°C with 10% chance of precipitation

- Would the Heir be able to fly in on the Royal Executive Flight?

Yes

- Could a liaison office be established for the Council Police to be able to handle security in partnership with the Caldan Union's appropriate services?

Yes. The appropriate services are the Royal Caldan Police Protective Services and the Clearwater Guard Regiment

- What kind of plan for the trip did the Caldan government have in mind?

A reception by the queen, a tour of Tarana, and an evening at the symphony

- The Allied States' government wanted to offer trade talks. It was proposed that the Minister of Finance, Count Thomas Lalery, along with the Royal Master of Offices, Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, would accompany the Heir in order to meet with the Prime Minister, Mr. Welton. Would this be possible?

Yes.

- The Heir would be personally accompanied by a matron of honour, two ladies in waiting, her private secretary, three maids, a hairdresser, her personal physician and nurse, and an honour guard of twenty members of the Royal Cavalry Guards.

This is acceptable.

- a detail of 12 Council Police attached to the Royal Protection Service would also accompany the Heir.

This is acceptable.

- There would be no desire to in any way embarrass the Caldan government, so discretion about the security would be naturally followed as much as possible.

This is acceptable.

- The Heir's husband, Prince Michael of Dakmoor, might accompany her. Would his addition if it were last minute present any problems?

No.

Tarana, Caldan Union

Crown Princess Jocasta was eighteen, and this was her fourth trip abroad, and only her second time abroad without her mother or other elder members of her family. As The Heir, she was representing the King, Queen and her country abroad more and more often. Accompanied by her own retinue but also by the King and Queen's Royal Master of Offices, she was being guided more and more in her duties.

"Everything," she remarked to Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, "Looks so strange and northern and pretty--yet chilly!" she shivered in the black fox stole she wore that contrasted with her red gown, with its descending ruffles on the skirt and embroidered white flowers on the sleeveless bodice that showed a good hint of her shapely bosom. Her dark hair was bound up in a braided coil, and she wore white gloves. Her delicate feature seemed to smile easily, her wide brown eyes giving her an innocent look.

"Yes, that's what winter is," said Prince Enoch, smiling to soften his words. He was wearing navy full dress with gold braid and medals, a sword, epaulets, '. "I'm glad you are enjoying it. Do you wish we had more snow at home?"

"Not really," said Jocasta, as though this was the deepest philosophical question she'd ever considered. "But it's very pretty. It's funny how northern peoples seem to associate Christmas with snow..."

Countess Emilia Childemain Jabbok, the dark haired attractive fortyish woman who was her lady in waiting and had known her all her life, patted her arm; she was wearing a satin and organza turquoise gown with pearl beading and a butterfly pin in her hair, and she said, "Are you enjoying traveling though, experiencing new places and cultures?"

"I think so, so far...but you know I think I feel sad that Michael wishes me to go to Ghant and I do not wish to go, however cold it is, I couldn't believe my ears when I was briefed on it, I've never seen so much cold in my life." Jocasta said softly, not wanting to gossip unpleasantly about former hosts too much. She felt glad of the presence of discreet but distinct guards, though of course her true knight, her loyal warrior was Colonel Marcus Josephus, in a cherry red full dress tunic with his two rows of medals, his gold epaulets, gold braid, shining black boots and sleek snug trousers.

"Her Highness' coat," he muttered to Delphinia, her maid. indeed, the VIPs were being bustled about with coats and scarves as they were coming to a landing. Jocasta had a coat of white fox fur and a matching hat.

Two files of Royal Cavalry Guardsmen in full dress marched down the steps, sticks against drum rims clicking sharply in time with their swinging free arms and marching feet, boots hitting the ground in nearly perfect time. Their uniform greatcoats were dark blue with black boots, double breasted brass button rows on tunics, billed kepis neatly at the same angle, arms shouldered, bayonets gleaming in the pale winter sun. They halted, pivoted neatly and presented arms as Princess Jocasta came towards the ground, her eyes wide with wonder. She had beautiful dark large eyes, a bow like mouth, a slightly curved little nose, and light olive skin with rich dark hair in a braided coil like crown on her head but hidden by the fur hat.

They halted at the steps. "I am Prince Enoch Tubal-Cain, Royal Master of Offices, Commander in Her Majesty's National Navy. I present Jocasta Obed, Heir of New Edom."

Fineberg, New Edom

Canopus Fade, the talent agent and former politician, was a lean built man due to metabolism, not due to his health regimen, for he smoked, drank and ate often from street vendors' carts in his very un-Edomite rush to make it big. He had been struggling off and on to make it big, but had rarely found that he had much talent behind him to make it work. Supposed star after tar failed. New Edomite film and television was not popular, New Edomite music filled a small niche. Yet he dreamed of a life of swirling talent, excitement and scandal in some foreign clime.

Recently he had been working for the Ministry of Culture but had his hopes dashed by the infernal politics of the issues surrounding the ban on the WorldVision Song Contest. Privately he was thinking of pitching young Edomite actresses to B movie studios for their casual willingness to take their clothes off when he was informed by Dr. Judith Been of the Ministry of Culture of a new job that they wanted to contract him for.

Well this would help out for a month or two at least, stave off the taxman and the reaper, as it were. He put on his best ligh blue jacket, dove grey shirt, light green pleated trousers and alligator shoes and took up a briefcase and planned to head for the Majestic Hotel where Mizzi was staying.

When he arrived, after having made an appointment, eh explained himself. "My dear lady, first of all I would liek to say it is a great honour to serve you in this capacity. I am going to be helping you with booking the tour areas, arranging for your hotels, transport and contacting the management of the places in question. I need however to know a bit from you first.

"Now first of all: you will be given VIP treatment by the Ministry. Security, transport and hospitality will be provided by the Ministry of Culture. We will probably have a liaison, as I am the contracted agent but not a Ministry official. So yes yes, I do have a few questions."

Canopus Fade was a man with an earnest friendly manner. He was one of those men who at a distance of say a few meters looked like he was in his early twenties--energetic, charming, with a spring in his step, but up close the crow's feet, the laugh lines, the slight ruddiness of nose and beadiness of eye that suggested a life lived to a bit of excess at times.

"First: what kind of performances are we looking at, in terms of your stage requirements, backup, crew, and so on? do you hae a regular band or can we possibly supply one that would suit your needs? Is there any special equipment you will need? And are there any other requirements we should know about/

"And forgive my ignorance but what kind of performances do you do?" he said with a charming smile. It was a bit embarrassing--though he was not easily embarrased; he had once been beaten to get a contract and had still held up the paper when the person apologized for her bodyguards' actions.

Tarana International Airport
Tarana, Caldan Union

Snow covered Caldas like a thick blanket in winter. From the air, it was a pristine blanket, pure and white, reflecting the light of a distant sun. On a clear day, even on a clear night, it kept even the unlit countryside from seeming too dark. The runway, however, was kept constantly clear of snow and ice and the New Edomites enjoyed a smooth landing. By the time Princess Jocasta descended the stairs, a small party of dignitaries had gathered in front of a motorcade consisting of five stately Wallace Town Cars bearing Caldan and New Edomite flags, a dozen uniformed officers of the Royal Caldan Police on motorcycles, an ambulance, two large windowless vans which presumably carried heavier security elements, and a police squad car ahead and behind. Also assembled was an honour guard of Clearwater Guards, dressed in their dark green dress uniforms, and a Royal Navy band which played the New Edomite national anthem first and then struck up the chords of 'Caldas the Free'.

As two Clearwater Guards unrolled the red carpet, one of the dignitaries, a tall, thin man with handsome features, stepped forward and bowed deeply to the New Edomites. 'Your Highness, I am Timothy Corder, Earl of Invrey and Earl Marshal of the Caldan Union.' He remained bowing until the princess acknowledged him. 'You know, of course, your country's ambassador. Allow me to introduce The Right Honourable James Sanders, Lord Mayor of Tarana, and his wife Harriet; The Right Honourable Christian Lydell, Minister of International Trade, and his wife Chloe; and Their Royal Highnesses Prince Malcolm and Princess Sarah The Duke and Duchess of Dreux, with their daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret of Dreux and her husband, His Excellency Geoffrey Redwood, Earl of St. Helier.' Each dignitary bowed or curtsied to the princess as they were named. All were dressed in winter coats, hats, and gloves but they still cut rather different figures. The Lord Mayor and his wife were portly and getting on in years. Lydell was younger, a man with broad shoulders sharp features, and his wife was a younger than he was, with dark curls and a round, pretty face. The Duke and Duchess were both of mature years but had a grave sort of dignity about them. Their daughter and her husband were young and healthy in their early thirties and, while their courtly manners were impeccable, they each wore a genuine smile.

The party was escorted to the cars. Princess Jocasta was escorted to the lead car with the Earl Marshal, the Dreuxes and St. Heliers, and one of her security officers. The Minister of Finance and the Royal Master of Offices came after with the Lydells and Sanders. The rest of the security personnel and aides were divided among the remaining cars and the security vans except for those who wished to join the Royal Caldan Police on horse or motorbike. The security liaison was taken to one of the vans where he was introduced to Colonel Anthony Staines who was coordinating the motorcade security as well as discrete security elements along the route from a mobile command centre there.

The streets, were, of course, cleared for the motorcade. There was no traffic and pedestrians were subject to heightened, if discrete, security. The dirty snow, soiled by exhaust fumes, had been cleared away as well, leaving the image of a winter wonderland intact even through the urban streets. While the shining skyscrapers of Narich were often visible from the road, Tarana proper was a city of relatively low red brick buildings and broad avenues. Even as they passed rowhouses and shops, the tops of the Gothic Revival structures surrounding St. James's Park were almost always visible. They passed a large, stately church built in the Neo-classical fashion with bright marble facades. The Caldans happily pointed this out to their guests as St. James Cathedral, one of the oldest and largest Catholic churches on the continent.

Just past the cathedral, the motorcade turned and drove a block before passing between a pair of Gothic Revival buildings, which were pointed out as the Caldan Museum of History and the Caldan War Museum. They then drove along a paved road into St. James Park itself. Out the window, Jocasta could see the park under a blanket of snow, its gardens buried, and its lake frozen over with families ice skating on the surface. The motorcade proceeded to the centre of the park, passing under an arch to a circle where a towering cenotaph, dedicated to the Caldan dead of all wars, stood surrounded by wreaths and flowers. Curved, marble fountains surrounding the circle with four arches, each carved with images of the history of Caldan arms, leading to four paved roads, dividing the park neatly into quadrants. The Caldans in both the lead cars pointed their guests East to Parliament House, flanked by Fuller House (the prime minister's residence) and the Gordon Bulding (which housed the Office of the Prime Minister and the Privy Council Office). However, the motorcade went West, along the Royal Mall. Onlookers were crowded alongside now, growing denser as they approached the gates of the palace. They kept clear of the mall itself with the perimeter maintained by security ropes and posted Clearwater Guards armed with C11 assault rifles. However, they snapped pictures and leaned close to get a look at Jocasta. Some of them held New Edomite flags and they generally seemed welcoming. There were, of course, some protesters holding rainbow flags, signs demanding equal rights for LGBTQIA people in New Edom, and even the WorldVision logo. But there weren't nearly as many of those as might be feared. 'Security says it's safe to role down the window and wave to the crowd, if you wish,' Invrey said.

Mizzi was in a thigh-length, sleeveless blue dress which accentuated her full hips, thighs, and buttocks, assets she'd learned the New Edomites coveted, for all their moralism. Her blond hair was worn loose, spilling down over her shoulders. She rose and smiled warmly at Canopus Fade as he entered, offering him both her hands. She had known agents before and his energy, his hurried lifestyle, even his worn look from up close and his slightly too slick, slightly too ingratiating manner of speaking, were all familiar and comfortable to her. He reminded her a little her own agent, Will Holmes. The thought of Holmes gave a small, ironic twist to her smile. He'd doubtless be angry she'd let the New Edomites set her up with another agent, at least until he thought about the new markets here and the good publicity back home from helping the foreign ministry. Unless it hurt her too much with her gay fans, a minority of her listeners but among the most passionate.

But thoughts of Holmes and markets and good will and gay fandom went unspoken. 'I normally perform with backup dancers,' she answered him. 'I need good lighting and people who know how to play with it a bit. During the course of a show, we might need a focused spotlight one moment, a clearly lit stage another, and beams of brightly coloured light the next. Smoke machines. Just the general audio equipment. I don't perform with a large band. I have the tracks I use. And I mostly do hip-hop and r&b with some forays into pop and rock & roll. I was also hoping to incorporate a little local flavour. Maybe see if any New Edomites want to work with me? Musically, I mean.'

Tarana

The strains of “Holy Holy Holy, Lord God Almighty” ended, and then the anthem of the Caldan Union began, and Jocasta remained hand over heart, and then came forward for the introductions. Before Lord Ivrey could speak she exclaimed, “How do you do? Why isn’t this all so lovely! All the snow, all the chill in the air, and such a lovely anthem you have! I am deeply touched by this warm welcome!”

The Heir then listened to the introductions and graciously greeted each of the dignitaries.

“My Lord Earl Marshal, on behalf of the Allied States—my cousin the King and my sister the Queen—thank you for this warm welcome…in the midst of all this snow.”

“Your Excellency,” she said with a smile at balding elegant Count Theodore Urban and his wife, the Ambassador and his wife from New Edom. The Count wore a dark wool coat and a lambskin cap.

“Highness, you have if anything grown more beautiful since your marriage, may I congratulate you in persona nd hope it is fruitful and happy,” said the Ambassador warmly.

“Oh thank you so much I hope so too…” Princess Jocasta said.

“Lord Mayor, Mrs. Sanders, what a pretty city you have,” said Jocasta to them, her large dark eyes seeming very sincere.

“Mr. Lydell, Mrs. Lydell, such a pleasure. I’m sure our government officials will have much to discuss with you,” said Jocasta.

The Prince, Princesses and Earl were also courteously greeted by Jocasta and her party with bows.

Jocasta seemed particularly interested in the guards.

“I don’t know much about this regiment, but may I inspect the honour guard please?”

After this, while in the car, she was very curious about the regiment, what its history was, who their colonel-in-chief was, if they had ever served in action recently,. “I am a bit of a military buff, though I’ve never served myself,” Jocasta explained,

“But I take such an interest in the military units in my own country, as my friends and courtiers will attest to,” she laughed. “But then my cousin the King is a naval officer, and I am colonel-in-chief of the Royal Cavalry Guards and the marine Infantry, which is lovely.”

Jocasta said, “Yes, by all means lower the window and we’ll have a little hello to them. I suppose we do not have flowers and alms to throw out?” she asked, innocent of Caldan customs. “My they all look so prosperous. Is this a wealthy area of town?”

“Oh look, protesters,” said Prince Enoch in the car he was in. “Is there a lot of this going on? What is public perception of this visit?” Privately he was wishing he was back in Fineberg helping Mizzi do her tour. The woman had a good body and he envied Canopus Fade.

Canopus Fade was glad to go over some possible bands to pair up with, listing some of the more popular in New edom or who had toure New Edom before.
These included:
“Two of them are a bit recent and are very much New Edomite…there’s Heavenly Days, Aquila which was an entrant in the Auroravision Song Contest. And there is also Andromeda, who is…well extremely controversial right now. Popular for her music, her talent is great, but her political views…well maybe not…”

“There are also some foreign bands. They are…well, controversial here, but that might not be a bad thing as they are also popular. But just to warn you, engaging them would be a lot more controversial, as I said. There is a scene among the young crowd here that loves foreign music, there are underground clubs for it, an online shifting community that enables you to link to download sites—not pirating, I mean, but you cannot normally purchase such music here. But anywhere, here’s their portfolios and some samplers of their tunes…”
Members: Mike Morrison, Simon Tao, Art Vandalay, Jess Zora
From: Adiron
Style: Classic rock (with blues and jazz influence)
Named after their projected odds of success, 10-to-1 (or 1021 as abbreviated by fans) is a constantly-experimenting rock band formed in the mid-1990s. Though their original style was closer to punk rock, maturity, a consistently loyal fanbase, and increased freedom from the recording industry has seen 10-to-1 branch out to different sounds over the years.
Their first major shift saw the band taking increased inspiration from bands who came before, including The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Guns N' Roses. This move was strongly opposed by their big-name label, who expected the band to stick to its current lucrative young demographic. Refusing to budge for the sake of artistic integrity, 10-to-1 was dropped by the label outright, not wanting to sign onto what they felt would be an inevitable flop and seemingly validating the band's moniker.
Instead, the band turned to a business model that was revolutionary in the late 1990s: online distribution. Working initially with a former manager and a few technically-inclined fans, 10-to-1 made their new album for sale completely online via free software called "The Tap." The idea of the "single" was also revived as individual tracks were made available for download. Luckily for the format, the album was released to critical acclaim, finding audiences who previously wrote 10-to-1 off as "a bunch of noisy kids" and setting the band apart from the pack.
The band also felt vindicated in massively undercutting the major labels. 10-to-1's distribution model was ahead of the curve, and the rise of broadband Internet and digital media formats in Adiron only put them even farther in the lead. The Tap's decentralized structure and open nature also made it a hub for other artists wishing to get their work noticed despite lacking the interest of major labels. The labels themselves eventually succumbed to market pressure and offered online distribution themselves, some of them through The Tap. Though the band stopped playing a direct role in The Tap's management some years ago, its members do still own stock and receive dividends.
10-to-1's latest sound draws from influences farther in the past still, including classical rhythm and blues. Some fans joke that the band's albums seem to be traveling farther and farther back in time, to the point where one day they'll trade in electric guitars for harpsichords.
The lead singer is Mike Morrison, consistently characterized by irreverence, lack of respect for authority (especially recording industry reps), considerable technical skill, and "extreme disregard for the safety of himself and others." His uncompromising nature was what resulted in the band being dropped from their original label, and along with Tao is one of the two main creative forces in the band. Infamously suffered from alcohol poisoning twice in one month.
Simon Tao is lead guitarist, the first of the two brains of the outfit. Though Morrison remains the face and heart of the band, it falls to Tao to act as primary songwriter, peacekeeper, and (relative) voice of reason. His destructive performances, however, might give the impression that Morrison is the sane one. Once lost the hearing in his right ear for several weeks after he caused a malfunctioning amp to explode by smashing it with his guitar (quoted as saying "Only one way to fix this f____ thing!"). The audience thought it was part of the act and applauded.
Bassist Art Vandelay is the other brain of the band, though in other matters. Pegged as "the nice guy," Vandelay proved to be the most business-savvy of the four. Of the band members, he was the single most involved with setting up The Tap and getting their independent albums off the ground. Served in the military during the Second Burnt Hills War, the details of which Vandelay refuses to disclose.
Drummer Jess Zora supplements Morrison's destructive attitudes with her own. Reported to habitually throw televisions out of hotel windows, and to have destroyed a hotel toilet with a half-stick of dynamite in response to the owner calling their practicing "noise." Zora has drawn attention as being one of the few drummers able to emulate, insofar as it is possible to do so, the distinctive chaotic 'style' of The Who's Keith Moon.

From: Wielkilas
Description:Punk Rock
History:
DragonFire is s band whose star has risen to extraordinary heights and does not look like it will ever come down. They have amassed a huge fan base, packed concert halls, and stolen the hearts of millions of young and middle-age Wielkilasin men and women, boys and girls with their energetic and often melodic variety of punk rock. From their humble beginning playing in bars and nightclubs to earn a meager living, these four women have launched themselves into super-stardom with a string of hits and multi-platinum albums and a musical style that continues to develop and mature. They are ample proof that anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic beginnings can achieve greatness in the nation of Wielkilas.
The story of DragonFire began in the small northern fishing village of Słobice, were the four members all attended the Roza II Secondary School. The four young women, who had all grown up in relatively poor households, had managed to scrape together a collection of instruments during their primary school years and had practiced and performed whenever free time presented itself and by the end of the end of their final year in secondary school had caught the eyes of not only music industry scouts but a the chairman of the well renowned Le Conservatoire,
When it came time to choose though, the quartet chose to accept the offer of an entrance audition at Le Conservatoire and wound up with scholarships to attend the conservatory. Of course, the quartet of young women did not stop performing during this time, though they did slow down slightly, and evolved their talents and honed their skill at Le Conservatoire. And when they emerged from the conservatory they exploded onto the Wielkilasin rock stage with hit after hit.
The Members of the Band are:
The lead guitarist and lead singer of the band, simply known as Köl (Ice), manages to be both beautiful and rough around the edges simultaneously. Her voice is powerful, enchanting, rough, and melodic all wrapped into one and is greatly sought after. She is also known for her many rather provocative outfits and sometimes sensual movements on stage, both of which have earned her a top spot on the banned musicians list of many of the more conservative Wielkilasin citizens.
She is known to party hard, though not as often as she is said to, and is quite frequently able to drink any other woman or man under the table if she so chooses. She has been a part of many a bar brawl and has even found herself in a rather rough fight with several conservative members of the Sejm which earned her a month long stint in a local jail which saw her emerge more popular than before. Since the incident though, she has calmed down dramatically, though she still maintains a healthy love of celebrations.
She is reported to be dating the hockey star, Jan Sobieski of the Jarocław Pancerni.
Quiet, stoic, and modest are the three words that best describe the backup guitarist and vocalist of DragonFire, Ludmita Liberkowski. She is known not only for her calm demeanor, but also her amazing skill with the guitar that some say matches or surpasses that of the DragonFire frontwoman, though Ludmita often denies this. She is the band’s voice of reason and concience and has done a lot to keep the other members of the band from drowning in excess, debauchery, and vice. And while she doesn’t dress in quite the same provocative fashion as the other members of the band, she still very much embraces the soul of punk fashion.
The third member and probably the one with the most “amorous” reputation is the drummer, Claudette Dalle. She is known for her wild hair styles and mind boggling speed, precision, and skill with a pair of drumsticks. After Köl, she is the most popular of the four women who comprise DragonFire.
While frontwoman Köl is known for partying and brawling, Claudette has earned a reputation for her sexual appetite. Tabloids, talk shows, and the average person on the street can list off at least a dozen different individuals of both sexes that the DragonFire drummer has fornicated with. Whether the rumors of her sexual appetite are indeed true, is not an easy question to answer as Claudette has never denied the rumors and has at times hinted at their truth
But despite her very sexual repuation, DragonFire’s drummer remains very much a mystery as she shares very little of her actual life with the public. One of the biggest mysteries of course being the nature of her sexuality. Is she heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual like the many rumors like to state? Only time will tell.
The fourth and final member of DragonFire is Gökçe Elçin and the band's bassist. Eschewing the electric bass guitar of most bassists, she instead plays a standing double bass. She is the band member who comes from the humblest of origins as a young girl orphaned by the murder of her parents after the family had immigrated to Wielkilas from their homeland of Gökşir. The future drummer of DragonFire found herself moving from one orphanage to another with barely a pair of clothes and a ragged doll to her name.

Gökçe worked very hard in her schooling both primary and secondary and was the last of the quartet to join what would become DragonFire. And her becoming a member of the band was something that almost did not happen as she was determined to follow in the footsteps of her parents and become an engineer. It took Köl an entire year to convince the talented young Ezmaleri orphan to join the quartet and it turned out to be a very good move for Gökçe.
Though she has dedicated herself to DragonFire, Gökçe never lost her interest in engineering and earned a degree in the subject while in the recording studio and on tour with the band. She is extremely professional and handles all the negotiations and other business dealings of the band. It is through her dealings in the business of music and frontwoman Köl’s charisma and force of personality that DragonFire has managed to succeed where so many other bands would have failed.
Gökçe is probably the least known and notorious of the four women that make up DragonFire and does not make any complaints as she would prefer to remain in the shadow of the more colorful members of the band.

Tiara Yi
Shora Song
Sang Ka
Style: Teen Pop
History:
"Found" during SMC auditions during their high school years, the current members of Girl's Century were chosen for their amazing singing abilities, dance abilities, among many other factors in the Sensalian youth. During the time between them being "found" and their debut in 2007 with their first full album "Goodness" was vigorous and intense training. But when the group first did debut, Girl's Century was found to be a major hit among many young Sensalians(ages 13-18) with their overall cute look and music.
Immediately beginning to work on a new full album after the amazing success of their debut, Girl's Century returned to work for their second full album and first mini album. During the space between the two, Girl's Century was found to be massively popular and increasingly were called to do advertisements and CF's. The release of their next full album "What a Life" in 2008 and their first mini album "Like?" was met with roaring approval from the general public with their audience range expanding greatly. With the two albums out and popularity of Girl's Century skyrocketing, Girl's Century began their first nation wide tour. Performing in all the major cities of Sensal and even in some of the smaller cities, Girl's Century proved themselves to be the most powerful performers in Sensal.
With the tour giving a significant boost to their popularity, Girl's Century returned next year with another full album and another mini album. Meeting instant success due to their massive popularity, a tour was decidedly not needed and the group has been given time off for a well due vacation.
Using the momentum from the success of the recent albums to even further Girl's Century skyrocketing popularity, the massive tour covered most all of Sensal's major cities and even arrived in some of the smaller cities as well. The Sensalian Nationwide Tour was Girl's Century first tour ever and considered a massive success in all forms. Drawing out +20,000 crowds at every concert, the total of 10 performances across all major Sensalian Cities boosted the image of Girl's Century as to make them the most popular group in Sensal.
After the tour, Girl's Century's popularity shot up massively once again and was one of the biggest reasons as to why Girl's Century is considered Sensal's most popular music group. The group's image also was established as powerful performers and Sensal's "cute face" among International fans. Afterwards, the group rose to their current level and at this point is poised to make international fame with their first out of country tour in Virtuous Greed.

Tarana

Jocasta was, as a matter of course, allowed to inspect the guard. They stiffened to attention, young and strong and rigidly disciplined. Eyes remained straight ahead. They were mostly of European origin, descended from Anglo-Celtic or French stock or from later waves of European immigration. However, there were men of every major racial grouping present as well as a few women.

Later, in the car, Prince Malcolm happily answered her questions. 'Their colonel-in-chief is Her Majesty. They most recently saw action in Iesus Christi but the regiment is as old as Caldas itself. They were King Charles's militia regiment back when he was fighting the Hanoverians for his father, King Charles III of the Three Kingdoms.'

Malcolm shook his head slightly as Jocasta suggested throwing flowers or alms. 'Most Caldans would consider alms an insult if they weren't in need. But I'm sure they'd appreciate a wave.' He pressed a button and the window rolled down. The crowd seemed to be screaming affectionately, waving their arms around to be noticed. They seemed excited to see Jocasta.

Lydell shook his head to Enoch. 'Fairly positive. But there's always going to be a few protesters.'

Fineberg

'I like Andromeda but it's maybe not the right note to send just introducing myself to New Edomites. But the others seem to have a religious or patriotic theme too. I want to stay away from people's beliefs, one way or the other. Who does good love songs?' Mizzi commented.

Tarana

Princess Jocasta shivered a bit as the cold air breezed through the car, but waved with a smile and a flash of her teeth in her pretty olive features. "Well they seem very friendly. This seems a very peaceful land. The people appear to be well meaning and kind. Do they see much visiting royalty?"

Prince Enoch, in the other car said, "Yes, protesting what exactly?"

Fineberg

Canopus Fade clucked his tongue. "Well Adromeda might still be best. Her protest song was controversial but that's not all that she does. Melody might be nice but she's a bit of a foreigner and rather callow, to be blunt...and you want to avoid being political, eh? Interesting. What do you intend to focus on?"

Tarana, Caldan Union

Prince Malcolm gave a small shrug. 'Not as much recently as in times past, but the Emperors of Excalbia and Pantocratoria have been here several times and the Empress of Tartarus once. Quite a few royals came for courtship balls and similar affairs.'

Lydell gave a small shrug. 'The obvious. They disapprove strongly of your Morality Act and think we should shun you because of it. I'm sure we could get you some of their literature if you like but it doesn't seem to be a particularly large or loud group. I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are always a few protesters.'

St. James Palace was a towering, Gothic Revival structure which dominated one end of the park. More Clearwater Guards stood at the gate, opening it for the motorcade and securing it behind them. The cars approaches what seemed to be a normal, open porte-cochere, arches designating a space for formal arrivals to let out. However, on closer inspection, it became apparent that transparent glass filled the space under the arches, allowing exits and entrances shielded from the cold. The door was opened for each car and footmen in green and gold livery opened the door and escorted the occupants into the palace. The entrance hall had walls of polished white marble around the doors and corners with the rest paneled in Caldan cedar. The footman turned to the right, other footmen opening the double-doors to the Audience Chamber, an enormous room with tall, arched windows between rectangular pilasters that are topped with gilt, acanthused capitals, lit by a great crystal chandelier and holding no furniture but the great throne at the far end. Courtiers stood to either side and behind the throne and to the left stood an elderly man in the tan uniform of the Royal Caldan Army marked with a gold braided cord and a stylised G on the shoulder-straps, alongside other medals. His left shirtsleeve was empty and pinned to the shoulder. To the other side stood the Prince Consort. The Queen herself sat on the throne. She was still a youngish woman, not much past thirty. Gwendolyn was dressed in a simple but elegant white gown with matching gloved and a red cloak lined with ermine. Her golden hair was done up in an elaborate coiffure and her blue eyes seemed to focus intently on Jocasta as soon as the New Edomite princess entered. She did not even turn her head as a herald announced Jocasta's full title. She knew who she was receiving.'Welcome to Tarana, Your Highness. I hope you had a pleasant trip.'

Fineberg, New Edom

Mizzi gave a slight shrug and started to pace as she thought. 'I don't know. I still sort of want to do a love song. Not with each other or anything but one of us could be talking to the other about a man or just singing along the same theme. Maybe a friend supporting another friend after a break-up. I think political seems to heavy-handed given the whole WorldVision thing. I'd like the exchange to be about the music itself. I want a classic, relatable story, not just, 'Here, learn about my country through song.''

She sighed and tossed herself down on the bed, resting her chin on her hands. 'I'm not really much of a songwriter,' she confessed in what some Caldan critics would call the understatement of the year. 'Let's go with Andromeda. I like her.'

"I'm interested in visiting Pantocratoria sometime," said Princess Jocasta. "Perhaps I will one day. Their government shied away from us rather than offend Allanea. Fancy that. The Allaneans don't scare me. I dont' imagine they scare anyone but little schoolgirls," she aid with a smile.

They had arrived at the palace, which was of a style that Jocasta found ugly and blocky but which made sense for a northern country. In New Edom, palaces tended to have a sense of air and light about them, and tended to also be more of a group of residences interspersed with gardens and pavilions. At the time it was also impressive , like a great crocodile perhaps or a cliff--not pretty but grand and strong looking.

Princess Jocasta for all her youth had a perceptive nature along with a strong will and a fierce sense of her own conscience. she noted the one armed old man and wondered what his story was; and the prince consort, but of course she was here to greet the Queen. "Your Majesty, she said, bowing her head first, "On behalf of Their Majesties King Elijah IV my cousin and Queen Mara the First, my sister, I bring you our warmest greetings--though I think I appreciate your warmth more. I am not so used to the cold but the warmth of your welcome is like a blazing fire.

"I would like to present you with a gift from my country on their behalf...they both wish they could have come but there are such affairs about regional security that they could not. And my sister is newly with child. So in their place they have sent not only me but a gift."

Two under-chamberlains in light blue jackets with golden keys embroidered on the breast pockets approached with a rosewood gold inlaid box which had symbols of the Caldan Royal Family and the House of Obeds' Griffon on it. It was a very large box the size of a clothing trunk, and inside it on a purple velvet cushion was an enormous egg, larger than an ostrich egg, which had been enameled with white and was banded with precious golden filigree set with rubies. "This is the egg of the Royal Griffon--a huge carnivorous flightless bird native to our country and a symbol of our nation, as a symbol of what we hope will be friendship between our countries," the young woman said.

Fineberg

"Andromeda has performed love songs. She has performed soft and soulful ones that have a melancholy tone to them as well as ones which are about passion. I should warn you that there is a bit of a controversy albeit a minor one about that. Some suggest she is singing about sexual ust, while she insists that she sings about intimate love," said Fade.

He liked the look of her on the bed. Her comfortably curvy body was very much admired as a type in New Edom. The air of sensuality and joie de vivre was also quite admirable. "You know, I think that what might help would be an introduction--but Edomite fashion, something that was not too blatant so that if things did not work out you could back away gracefully. I could arrange for you to meet her at something like a party or an event that would enable you to spend sme time talking to her. There will be a benefit dinner for the new Saint Elizabeth Women's Hospital that will be tomorrow evening. I think there are still table spaces available. Would you like me to make some calls and see if we can arrange a place? If you were to wish to you could also contribute and that would be a nice foot ni the door, so to speak."

The Queen rose and approached the egg, gently touching the surface. Her eyes widened ever so slightly at the size of the thing. She would have to find somewhere to keep it. 'Thank you,' she said with a warm, genuine smile. 'It is a worthy gift and I hope the promise of things to come.' She nodded and two men took the trunk.

'I'm looking forward to dinner, Your Highness. I'll let you freshen up and get settled in your rooms,' Gwendolyn said.

Fineberg, New Edom

'That sounds wonderful,' Mizzy said eagerly, not at all minding whether or not Andromeda sung about sexual lust or not. 'Make a few calls and I'll meet her. Then we'll see where it goes.'
