Introduction

Mother Goddess Worship, known locally as Leena'i'atta or Leenism, is the official religion of the Shrailleeni Empire. It is a monotheistic, heterodox faith composed of numerous sects, temples, and orders all organized under a single system known as the Ancient Temple or the Temple of the Mother Goddess. Followers believe in a supreme maternal deity, the exaltation of women and family, and the principles of knowledge, compassion, and peace.

Leenism is the professed religion of the great majority of people living in the Shrailleeni Empire. One branch of Leenism, the Temple of Gaia, is the official and most commonly practiced religion of the Confederation of Jedoria. At the time of this writing, Mother Goddess Worship is an established faith within the populations of twenty-eight nations worldwide, and remains particularly strong within the Cornellian Empire region.

Statement of Purpose

This thread is intended to catalogue and expand the religion of Mother Goddess Worship by assessing its status among nations other than the Shrailleeni Empire.

Nations are asked to familiarize themselves with the core tenants of the religion, and then answer a questionnaire composed by the Foreign Affairs Matriarchy concerning the presence, legality, and attitudes of their nation toward this religion and its adherents.

An optional questionnaire is included for nations that have religions which might be considered for inclusion under the wider umbrella of Mother Goddess Worship.

Although the Leenic faith is composed of a wide variety of different specific practices, beliefs, and interpretations, all components of the Temple of the Mother Goddess share a basic set of beliefs that serve as the common bond between them. In addition, there are several common beliefs and philosophies which are shared by many, though not all, of the Temple sects and orders.

Core Tenants:

All adherents to the Temple of the Mother Goddess believe in a single, inherently feminine Creator who both made and is made up of the universe and all of its inhabitants, who created humanity in Her image, and who continues to communicate to Her adherents in subtle ways. This Creator is omnibenevolent, omniscient, and omnipresent, but not omnipotent.

All adherents believe that human beings should live their lives in accordance with the four "pillars" or virtues which comprise the Enlightened Path, and that the Enlightened Path is the only way to reach true communion with the Creator. The four virtues are knowledge, understanding, compassion, and peace. Knowledge is the promotion of learning, curiosity, and the search for truth. Understanding is internal, the promotion of self-reflection and application of information. Compassion is the acceptance of the other, the promotion of empathy, and reflection on universality. Peace is the promotion of non-violence, as well as inner harmony and a respect for all life.

Although interpretations vary, all followers of the Leenic faith believe in life after death, usually in the form of a reunion with the Creator or oneness with Creation. Several branches of Leenism, though not all, believe that those who stray too far from the Enlightened Path are severed in some way from the Mother Goddess, and will never experience the oneness of Creation.

Scriptures

Every order of the Temple of the Mother Goddess holds several key religious scriptures and texts in common, while several also hold their own specific scriptural doctrines or adhere to slight variations on the common texts.

The key primary source of the majority of Temple sects, particularly those with roots in Home Island, is known as the Holy Stone or the Goddess Stone. The stone is ancient, dated to roughly 10,000 B.M.E., and is carved with a variety of images and pictographs that depict the Mother Goddess, the act of creation, and the birth of humanity. Located in the Ancient City, its exact history before that point has been lost to time, but it is believed by many to have been created by the first humans in order to record the story of creation. Study of the images and pictographs gave rise to the traditional creation story, and from that many of the key principles of Leenic worship.

After the Goddess Stone and its translations, the Book of Revelations is held to be the most important of the Leenic sacred texts. The book is a history of Divine Revelations, recorded by the Priestesses and Priests who experienced them, with each adding on to the next to expand the text. The majority of the revelations contained with in were recorded between the First Enlightenment and the Second Expansion, with a few of the oldest pre-dating the First Empire. The Book of Revelations forms the basis for most religious tenants of the Temple orders, including the Four Pillars, matrifocal ideals, and details regarding faith, practice, and worship for a variety of sects.

The Book of Life is the final source of Leenic scripture, and is the only one considered not to be literal expression of the Mother Goddess. Rather, the Book of Life is composed of thoughts, deliberations, and details of day-to-day living written by Priestesses and Priests after a great deal of prayer and meditation. The Book of Life is therefore constantly added to and altered, and numerous variations exist. Before a chapter or entry can be added to the book, it is required to come under the scrutiny of several other religious authorities. However, the Book of Life is still highly valued for providing theological input for a variety of mundane situations, including new scientific discoveries and technologies.

The Mother Goddess and Matriarchy

A large number of Temple sects and orders believe that due to an inherent connection with the Creator, commonly referred to as the Mother Goddess, women are placed inherently in the best position to communicate and understand Her will. This belief places women at the forefront of most creation myths, traces lines of descent through the mother, and exalts the mother as the head of the family and the household. Many of these orders only allow women into their ranks, and some only allow women who have had children. Many hold the philosophy that rulers should embody maternal values, or should can only rule justly if mothers themselves, and these beliefs form the basis for Shrailleeni matriarchal systems. Others place special emphasis on pregnancy and childbirth.

Differing interpretations exist and are accepted as legitimate systems of belief, and include variations in philosophy and word use. One common variation are sects and orders which emphasize feminine values but believe that both men and women can encompass and promote these values. These orders tend to allow male membership and leadership, emphasize the role of the father and the son in the family household, or hold more egalitarian ideals. Other variations include those that do not view the Creator as a human-like entity, those with altered creation myths, or those that practice veneration of spirits in addition to that of a Creator.

The Mother Goddess and Children

Children form a particularly important aspect of belief in many variations of Mother Goddess Worship, both literally and spiritually. Theologically, most adherents of the Temple of the Mother Goddess believe that humanity was formed or "birthed" directly by the Creator, and are therefore granted a special status alongside the rest of creation. Those that follow this philosophy consider humankind to be the "Children of the Mother Goddess," a term rooted in antiquity and the origin of the word "Shrailleeni." All humans are therefore seen as siblings in spirit, and deserving of compassion and love. This line of belief also provided the basis by which Shrailleeni subjects are commonly referred to as the "Children" of their rulers, in order to evoke the divinity of the human-Creator relationship.

Due to the connection with maternity and motherhood, many Temple orders also place emphasis on the importance of and care for children. Childbirth is seen as a reflection of creation, and many members of certain orders specialize in midwifery and post-natal care. Care for orphaned children is also a primary activity, and adoption widely promoted. Temple beliefs also foster a more communal attitude toward raising children, although ultimate authority is still placed primarily with the mother.

Altruism and Charity

Due to a common emphasis on Compassion and a general belief in the connectedness of all humanity, altruism has always been held as an important aspect of the majority of Temple sects. Because the Creator is not seen as omnipotent, it is widely held that the promotion of Her Will falls to Her adherents and that action is necessary to fulfill it. Most temples and shrines are open to all comers at any time of day or night, and have the resources needed to provide food, water, and shelter to those who are in need of it. Some go even further than this, collecting resources to bring to those who have the least as a symbol of the goodwill of the Mother Goddess. This combination of beliefs has led to a rich tradition of charitable organizations within the Temple system, a tradition which has begun to expand farther than ever before in recent years.

Some Temple orders, such as the Order of Comfort, are structured outright as charitable organizations. More recently, the Red Oval-Arcs was formed in order to allow members of all Temple sects to participate in charitable and aid efforts both at home and abroad. These organizations belief in strongly emphasizing the virtue of Compassion, often teaching to value community over the self and promoting the value of all life. Vegetarianism is sometimes practiced by these orders, and several provide education in medical training as part of their religious regimen.

Temples and Shrines:

All sects of the Temple of the Mother Goddess center their worship around specific physical localities, in the form of temples, shrines, and holy places. These places are not seen absolutely necessary for worship or prayer, but are instead considered to be ideal places to focus the mind on meditation, come together as a community, and better seek to understand the Will of the Mother Goddess. Temples and shrines come in an extremely wide variety of styles, sizes, and designs, from very small "sidewalk" shrines to isolated monasteries to sprawling temple complexes.

Surraleeni:

The center of spiritual focus in all shrines, temples, and holy places are referred to generally as surraleeni. Surraleeni are locations or objects which are believed to foster stronger and more reliable connections with the Mother Goddess than ordinary places and things, and collective worship is typically directed toward them. Surraleeni come in a startling variety of forms. Smaller shrines may have surraleeni in the form of small idols, statues, plants, or carvings. Surraleeni may also take the form of trees, alters, large statues, open flames, or gardens. Natural objects such as waterfalls, ponds, or mere open spaces can be considered surraleeni. At least one Temple order directs its worship to the moon, and another does so through the abstract concept of dance.

Leadership and Hierarchy:

The leaders of the majority of Temple sects are female, and known as Priestesses. Certain sects allow male leadership within their Orders as well, and these are referred to as Priests. Every branch of the Leenic orders maintains its own process for recruitment, training, and organization of its leading members, however, certain widespread patterns can be generalized.

Most branches of Mother Goddess Worship welcome Initiates on a voluntary basis. Initiates in monastic orders may leave their homes to live in isolation with the sect of their choosing, but many orders allow and even encourage the maintenance of a home life as well as a spiritual life. Initiates who take the vows of their order are then placed under the tutelage of the leader of that order, which takes the form of both religious and humanity studies, instruction on the specific doctrines of the order, and sequences of prescribed religious and spiritual contemplation. Certain order may ask Initiates to preform tasks of charity, maintenance, or otherwise aid ranking members in their duties.

Ascension to the upper religious ranks requires the passing of a test or series of tests specific to the order involved. The Initiate, if proven worthy, is then inducted into the order as a full member and gains the rank of Priestess or Priest. Priestesses and Priests are obligated to certain duties within the community, which include tending to the local surraleeni, maintaining humanitarian services, and leading organized prayers. An inducted Priestess or Priest may also choose to pursue more specific avenues of knowledge, and thus become capable in the eyes of their order of various tasks including the instruction of Initiates, providing Enlightened advice to local leadership, sitting as Judge in legal disputations, organizing overseas charities, or contributing to the continuation and advancement of religious knowledge.

Some orders possess complex hierarchies for their ranking members, but most Leenic sects grant more distinguished positions based on the fluid structure of honor-rank, which is determined by the respect of members, age of the member, and other factors which vary depending on sect. Most Temple orders possess a member of highest rank who is referred to as the Mother of the order, or Father in the case of males. Others adhere to more communalistic methods of leadership.

Following the Great Enlightenment, overall leadership of the various sects of the Temple of the Mother Goddess is held by the High Priestess, who is elected from among representatives of all orders but who has for centuries been chosen from among the Temple of the Ancient City. The duties of the High Priestess are very limited, and are restricted mainly to fostering communication and unity among sects, calling for gatherings of high religious importance, and serving as a voice for the entirety of the Leenic community. Unlike some foreign religions, the High Priestess of the Temple of the Mother Goddess has little political power or influence over the specific doctrines of the various sects.

Ritual and Rite:

Rituals and rites in Mother Goddess Worship vary widely from sect to sect. In general, occasions such as births are celebrated with the greatest ceremony and joy, with all sects practicing often elaborate birth rituals. Other major ritual occasions include marriage ceremonies, religious festivals, and funeral rites. A few of the most common forms of these are listed here:

Birth Rituals - A successful childbearing is a time of great celebration for any Leenic community, as it is considered further proof of the miracle of Creation bestowed by the Mother Goddess upon Her Children as well as a happy occasion for the couple and their families. Several Temple sects allow Priestesses, though never men, to specialize in midwifery and the science of childbirth, often using both traditional and modern knowledge. The newborn, when delivered, is typically kept with its mother who herself becomes the object of the ensuing rituals.

These include, depending on sect, the wearing of certain religious artifacts, a carrying of the new mother upon a litter, the ritual consumption of certain foods, or in the Temple of Fire the ceremonial lighting of a Sacred Flame. These can include parades and community-wide celebrations. In some orders the celebrations can last several days. The birth of twins or triplets, extremely rare, are typically met with widespread jubilation and often national fame, with the new parents receiving gifts and prayers in such numbers that their needs are sometimes met for years afterward.

Deformed or early-born babies receive a different set of rituals, but these are often no less elaborate. Those requiring special medical care typically find the means through the local Temple organization, and abnormalities of physiology are looked upon most often as a blessing rather than a deformity. Such children are said to have been touched directly by the Goddess during their formation, and enjoy a special standing in Leenic society complete with complimentary rituals.

Marriage Ceremonies - Marriage ceremonies among the orders of the Temple of the Mother Goddess range from very simple, formal affairs to elaborate rituals. At its base, a marriage takes the form of a contract between two individuals who are then bound to certain responsibilities to one another, and can be quietly officiated by any Priestess or Priest accredited with the ability by their order. More often, the extended families of each married individual become deeply involved, and many traditions allow for large celebratory gatherings and extended rituals and prayers throughout the marriage ceremony. The marriages of wealthy or noble families can even be cause for wider festivals throughout the community.

Marriage in nearly all Temple orders is strictly monogamous, although nothing in the wider umbrella of Leenism prohibits marriages among multiple partners. Rituals exist in most orders for marriage ceremonies between women and men, women and women, and men and men, and some orders exclusively practice homosexual marriage. Because of the lack of procreation inherent in homosexual marriage, these are much less common in Leenism at large and are often contracted with the stipulation that the couple must adopt a child within a certain allowance of time in order for the union to be considered complete. In most homosexual marriages, family lineage and ties are carried by the oldest partner.

Divorce is permitted within most, but not all, temple orders. In general, women are able to initiate a divorce with little difficulty. In the most popular orders, divorce can typically only be initiated by men who can prove a violation of the marriage contract in the form of adultery, physical abuse, or insanity in their partner.

Funeral Rites - Nearly all orders of the Temple of the Mother Goddess practice cremation as the center of their funeral services. Through cremation, it is believed that the last remnants of the soul of the deceased are brought into oneness with the Mother Goddess and with Creation. Leaving a body to decompose is seen as disrespect in most practices, although it is generally admitted that the soul cannot be prevented from returning to the Mother except by truly Unenlightened actions in life. The tombs and mausoleums of non-Leenic lands are a source of mild discomfort among Leenic travelers.

The most common funeral practices involve ritual cremation in certain, designated funeral areas. These are often many centuries old, and laden with the ashes of all that time. A new pyre is then constructed by the family of the deceased, who is cleaned, dressed, and sometimes decorated by the local Priestesses or Priests. After a gathering which may in some cases first include a parade from the local temple to the ritual site, specific prayers are uttered and the pyre is lit by the ranking family member.

Once this is complete, the following rituals may vary. Some orders hold a celebration of the departed returning to the loving arms of the Mother Goddess, which may include feasting and other celebrations. Others allow more quiet rituals of contemplation and prayer.

Prayer and Practise:

Because the Mother Goddess is considered to be omnipresent, prayer in Mother Goddess Worship is considered to be a part of everyday life. Collective prayers are typically led by a local Priestess or Priest and enjoined by the congregation, and many have developed beautiful rhythms and songs to foster communal identity. Other sects prefer periods of silent prayer or contemplation, in which members gather but do not speak aloud until a significant Revelation has been made. The latter method is especially preferred for cross-sect congregations, and Revelations made in this manner are considered to be of great import.

Typical everyday prayers among Mother Goddess Worshippers include greetings, goodbyes, well-wishes, and certain phrases which are so well known in the Shrailleeni Empire that even non-practicing Shrailleeni know and use them by heart. These usually reflect the omnibenevolent nature of the Mother Goddess, and include:

"I greet you in the Light of the Mother."

"May the Mother smile upon you and all of Her Children."

"May the Light of the Mother shine upon you."

"Walk the Path, and find Peace."

"The Warmth of the Mother welcomes you here."

"May we come to the Mother's Embrace."

Days of Worship:

In most orders, Friday is considered a day of prayer, rest, and contemplation, and many businesses in the Shrailleeni Empire are closed on Fridays accordingly.

Holidays vary according to sect, but October 6 is celebrated with festivities among all branches as the day that the modern Shrailleeni state came into being.

The Temple of the Mother Goddess has changed and expanded in several ways in reaction to the shifts in political climate created by exchange with the outside world. Primarily, the Temple Order has been the primary source of charitable and volunteer aid efforts from the Shrailleeni Empire to nations across the world. Several charitable organizations exist from numerous sects and orders, including the Red Oval-Arcs, the Order of Comfort, and the Order of the Open Hand, all organized under the Temple-run Shrailleeni Volunteer Organization. Deploying to sites of humanitarian concern, primarily within the Cornellian Empire, these organizations have done a great deal to alleviate human suffering while also creating a positive image of Mother Goddess Worship in foreign lands.

While proselytizing remains seen as illegitimate by the Temple Order, the faith has spread out from the Shrailleeni Empire in several ways. First is the process known as the "Enlightened Way," in which foreign religions seen as carrying strong similarities to the Leenic faith are contacted to see if they might be included under the heterodox umbrella. Places which have responded positively to this method include Dengali and Kurungo, the latter of which eventually joined not only the Temple but the Empire as well.

The second is through a process known as "Open Hands," which has gained limited but steady traction in several nations, notably the Commonwealth of Gloria Regis. This method relies on the faith to be spread through the deeds its adherents, and by educating those who approach with honest curiosity, and is the method common to Shrailleeni aid camps across the world.

One year ago, the Third Enlightenment, also being called the Great Revelation, was announced by the Temple declaring the feudal rule of Queens to be illegitimate and calling for the establishment of rule by democratic principles. This gathering, which included more leaders and sects than any previous Enlightenment, is ongoing and the outcome of its revelation remains to be determined.

Most recently, the Temple of Gaia in Jedoria announced its interest in discovering if Gaia worship and Mother Goddess Worship were spiritually comparable. It was determined by both the Leenic orders and the Temple of Gaia that this was in fact the case, and they embraced one another as Children of the Mother Goddess. The Temple of Gaia is now the second-largest Leenic order in the world, and its peculiarities of worship are being exchanged with the rest of the Leenic community.

This is the native religion of Ashab whose followers make up 54% of the populace. It is characterized as a spiritual faith that places an emphasis on communion with nature, duality, sexual liberation, personal enlightenment, pacifism and respect for all life. Their spiritual and political leader has traditionally been a Queen from the ancient Kador royal family. This is due to their reverence of the feminine form although overall they are not necessarily matriarchal as leaders of individual communities can be males. All Intaki communities are led by Shamans who specialize in the teachings and rituals of the religion. For rural Intaki, this also means becoming skilled in herbal medicine. Shaman duties include providing spiritual guidance, healing and imparting the teachings of their faith to the young. The mastery of each community's Shaman differs as much of the Intaki lore has been lost throughout the years of Catholic oppression.

Intaki do not believe in deities, rather in the Tak. This is the omnipresent and omnipotent collective force composed of the spirits of all living organisms and all organisms that ever lived. It guides the destiny of all life and all life yet to be created. The duty of all Intaki is to strengthen the Tak and minimize its corruption. Humans are the only beings capable of corrupting the Tak by corrupting their spirits and the spirits of others. Individual emotions and attitudes can influence the Tak. Hate, greed, envy and malice corrupt the Tak. Compassion, empathy, harmony and serenity strengthen it.
