Capt. Aleksei Tallow “Null”
07:29 September 18, 1992 // Koga Air Base, Seian

Welcome to nowhere.

A sobering thought as Null watched the goings on of the airbase from his room’s window. A simple accommodation afforded to the new Captain, a rank bestowed upon him as if that would pacify his resentment to the new posting. In truth it was a bitter pill to swallow. He had worked hard all his life, striving to be the best at whatever it was he had set his mind to, and to be handed a promotion like this felt undeserving. A bruising of his pride. Not a deep wound and one that would heal in time.

The new assignment, however, was another matter entirely.

Null sighed, running a hand lazily through his hair before breaking away to finish dressing. He would be meeting his new squadron soon for better or for worse.

The 13th Mercenary Air Squadron was recently formed though had existed in some capacity ever since the Feds came to power. A seldom acknowledged unit kept at arm’s length to the national military. Mercenaries weren’t all too uncommon, especially so during the war a couple years back, but guns for hire were generally looked down on for their rogue nature, being more of an unpleasant necessity than welcomed addition. Null had served alongside a mercenary unit during his time over Sotoa. Needless to say he hadn’t been too impressed. Ironically he was now squadron leader of his own merry band of thugs and cutthroats, and his flight leader had been the one to recommend him. A cruel joke to be sure, but Null was loyal to his duty and would serve as needed, no matter his distaste.

Dressed, he made his way to the briefing room.

Koga Airbase was a small, backwater facility in north-central Seian, uncomfortably close to the border and with little more than a skeleton crew to maintain it. There was a small town nearby, namesake of the base, but most everything else on the horizon was flat fields and farmland. The base itself had a single runway, a handful of hangers, and a few auxiliary buildings surrounding the main headquarters. The briefing room was in the east wing, opposite that of the barracks.

Null had arrived late last night alongside other Dorusian personnel. The mercs had come separately, delivered or having flown themselves, but the squad leader was uncertain just how long they had been on base. A week, a day, or maybe just now arriving.

He passed a few locals, technicians, both speaking in a language he could not understand. They nodded once they noticed him but kept to themselves for the most part.

Rounding a corner Null caught sight of his wingman. Mitsuko Kimura, callsign Angel, local but having spent most of her life in the FRD. High-energy and more than a bit absentminded, she was nonetheless a competent pilot. A small consolation afforded him by his superiors. She was happy to be back in her homeland, and he was glad to have someone he could rely on.

At her side were two of his fellow countrymen: 2nd Lieutenants Sewek and Zelenko, AACS. Null hadn’t had the pleasure to serve alongside them previously, or to meet them until now, but from the looks of things they were becoming quite friendly with Angel. Perhaps too friendly. Of course Angel, social as she was, was oblivious to their advances and likely thought little of Sewek’s proximity, leaning against the wall with maybe a foot between him and her.

“Don’t you have anything better to do than fraternize with my wingman?” Null called out.

“You’re finally awake,” greeted Angel with a smile, completely turning her back to the two men and inadvertently denying them any opportunity to press their luck.

Sewek had a glower to him as he straightened. “Just having a little chat.”

Null chose to ignore the man. To Angel: “Did you even go to bed?”

“Of course I did,” she answered a bit too quickly, bouncing a bit on the soles of her feet. “Just excited is all. First time being home in a long time. Kinda wish it was under better circumstances though”

“Yeah, well, we should be done with this soon enough. Maybe you can get some time off. Go visit your sister.” Her eyes brightened with the suggestion. Null glanced over to Sewek, he having crossed his arms and with the same dour look on his face. “And you, try to keep your hands to yourself.”

Sewek muttered something in response but said nothing else.

The four continued on to the briefing room. Outside they found the base commander, Andreu Kwan, a wiry old man, conversing quietly with temporary base adjutant Major Nathaniel Cocoran, a stern bulldog of a firebrand that would be overseeing the 13th Squadron during their stay. Beside them both was Joel Zeeger, flight mechanic.

Zeeger was the first to greet the new arrivals.

“About time you got your ass outta bed,” grumbled Cocoran, standing in such a way to make his prominent medals all the more so, looking as if something unpleasant had just passed under his nose. He studied the squadron leader, seeming not too impressed with what he saw. “Not much to look at, are ya? Expected something better from the 101st.”

“Graves was busy,” Null said with indifference.

Dorian Graves, his former flight leader, was perhaps the best pilot to serve in the FRD air force since before the Feds came to power. At the very least he was the youngest among them to achieve the status of Ace, having downed no less than thirteen enemy pilots during the war. Serving under him in the 101st had been an honor, a badge of honor almost, but not so much of one to keep Null from being shipped off halfway across the world.

Cocoran grunted some remark as he handed over a manilla folder. “Just don’t embarrass us.”

Null took the file and offered a halfhearted salute – more of a mocking gesture really but the Major was too dense to realize it. Opening to the first document he was greeted to the word Belkan.

A great start to his day.

Snapping the folder closed, he led the others into the briefing room to greet his new squadron.

Shimazaki Haruna stirred as the alarm beeping in her ear, an eye opening at the disturbance. Slamming onto the gadget, she shut it off as she leapt out of bed, scratching her messy hair and sighing at the time. The base was dark, even the streetlamps were still lighted. Staring out of the window the young girl stretched as she reached out for her watch, again ruffling up her short, thick hair.

Five thirty a.m. That’s good, enough time to get my routine done.

Koga Air Force Base, where she was working a year prior to joining the mercenaries, a relatively small base compared to the others in Seian. Haruna spent several years working as a translator in the base, helping to translate foreign documents as well as teaching pilots other languages as part of their survival skills. It was a good job, the pay was decent and she works quickly enough to ensure spare time for her own idle readings. With an average IQ of 155 from different official tests in Osea and Seian, and a hardworking mindset, it would seem that the sky’s the limit for Shimazaki Haruna.

Indeed, as she applied for Seian’s Air Force after receiving recommendations from several squadron leaders, Haruna was looking forward to joining them in the sky as a military pilot. Knowing that her country faced constant danger, as well as the historical conflicts between Seian and Beiarusia, Haruna wanted to be part of a shield, to not allow belligerents to bully her country at will. With an eager heart, she took the tests, aced them, until the final stage when she blacked out when pulling a high-G maneuver. Doctors attributed it to the lack of sufficient rest, as Haruna was constantly working, exercising, and aiming to improve herself. It would prove to be her downfall in the Seian piloting program.

Now she’s back in the base, as part of a mercenary group. Arriving four days ago, she has little need to reintegrate herself to the surroundings, although there were new places where she was allowed to access. The hangers, the workshops, even the common room of the Tech Labs where two scientists spent most of their free time. Haruna has gone through great pains to know them, not that they were people who were hard to talk to, but mostly on Haruna, who happened to be an introvert, especially after what happened to her parents, as well as the persecution she experienced in her younger years.

Slipping on her training singlet and shorts, Haruna started her jog around the perimeter road of the base. Her morning runs allowed her to refresh her mindset every morning, as well as get rid of any sleep or toxins which still exist within her. Passing by the hangars, a look of irritation crossed her face as she recalled the incident two days ago, the mercenary dealer refusing to sell her an F-5 interceptor, citing her youthfulness and inexperience. Instead, she settled for an F-84F Thunderstreak, an attacker which has decent capabilities against aircraft. At least she would acquire combat hours against vehicles, while being covered by her squadron mates in the air. But her anger at being denied the plane which she trained in during her stint in the Seian Air Force, as well as Morena Squadron, led her to go drinking at a local bar. Her worst mistake, Haruna passed out at the counter, and a local junkie tried to take her home for some… entertainment. Thankfully, she was saved by a local base mechanic, who helped to clean her up and bring her back to the base. In exchange for secrecy, Haruna promised the mechanic to find her a boyfriend when she would be able to.

It was not something to be proud of, but it happened, and it was also an important life lesson for Haruna. Fortunately she avoided the worst of the experience, as the possibility of remaining a pilot or even a member of any military from such a scandal, or being pregnant, was extremely low, especially in these times of unrest. Shaking her head to clear her mind of the experience, Haruna continued her run, aiming to clock her ten kilometer run within an hour, just in time to wash up, grab a light breakfast, and munch on a snack bar as she headed for the briefing.

Fresh and ready to roll, Shimazaki Haruna arranged her hair once again as she checked herself in the mirror. Wanting to have a good impression on her new squadron mates, she decided to forgo her spectacles, which in essence was just an accessory without prescription lenses. Blessed with perfect eyesight, Haruna wore her spectacles out of habit during her days in Osea, carrying the look of a typical Saienese girl in a foreign land.

Reaching the briefing room early, Haruna saw that it was empty, devoid of people. Shrugging, she took a seat as she prepared her pencil and notebook, just when the door opened to reveal a group of men walking in. Jumping to her feet, perhaps too enthusiastically as she knocked her knee on the chair desk, Shimazaki Haruna, nugget of Morena Squadron, greeted the man with a stoic expression, her voice level as she saluted methodically.

“Good morning Sir! Second Lieutenant Haruna, Shimazaki, of Morena Squadron.”

Aiden "Frosty" Kelly sat in the front row of the briefing room. He was wearing grey sweatpants and a disheveled white teeshirt. It was only one of three outfits he had with him, the other two being a flight suit and his old dress uniform from being in the Perfanesian Air Force. His blonde hair was a mess, and his elbows leaned on the back of the cheap chair he'd turned around backwards to sit in.

Frosty had only managed to show up a couple hours ago and hadn't managed a single minute of sleep since then. Due to that, the thirty-three-year-old Perfanesian pilot was exhausted and not about to have any shit. His annoyance was only heightened by the fact that he was starting to feel so old, at least compared to the rest of these young faces in this briefing room.

The staff who came in just soiled his mood further. A man at the front of the group with captain's bars instantly soiled his dour mood and any hope he had of this day turning around. This kid looked a little too young to be a captain... But Kelly remembered when he'd had shiny bars like that, too, both as a Perf pilot, and then as a flier for the South Sotoans. Was that war really already six years ago?

Frosty's lieutenant's bars were left in his room. He'd gotten them upon showing up, but he refused to show the damn things. It was just a simulated rank, anyways. They were all mercs here. And despite what felt like a demotion, Kelly just knew it meant he wasn't at the top of the priority list of the Dorusians or the Seianese. Frosty rubbed his face and sighed. He'd keep his thoughts to himself for now and see how this was going to work out. If things didn't go how he wanted, he could always just get up and walk out.

Who knows? Maybe he'd see some old faces here.

Dan woke up with a horrible headache from the night before. After a few days of sitting in the airfield he decided to go into town and have a drink or two or a dozen at the local watering hole. It wasn't until he was blitzed and back on base at 23:00 that someone informed him of the 7:30 briefing. He went to the men's restroom and took a short ten minute shower, and got dressed in his flight jumpsuit. He went to the mess hall and ate the eggs and grits the cook had waiting, and drank some black coffee. After his meal wad done, he topped of his mug of coffee and proceed to the briefing room. The cook saw Dan leaving with the mug of coffee.

"I'm not supposed to let people to take the dishes out of the mess hall, but you look like shit. I'll want the mug back though." The cook remarked, noticing Dan's apparent hungoverness.

"That obvious? Well, thanks. I'll have it back by lunch." He said, and proceeded to the briefing room. He ran his fingers trough his hair in an effort to make it look better, and continued to drink the hot coffee. The short walk to the briefing room was, well short. He took a chair in the back of the room, and looked at the few other pilots who decided to show up thirty minutes early. The Capitan walked in, and Dan just simply nodded to the superior officer.

Did I just nod to my squadron commander? I'm so fucking stupid.

Bjorn had already been awake for 30 minutes using a small flashlight to read a magazine in the cockpit of his Panavia Tornado GR1.

He had been issued a bed in the Barracks, however he refused to sleep there, leaving the majority of his none mission critical gear in a footlocker in the barracks. His watch began beeping and he looked down checking the time.

"That gives me an hour and 30 minutes to be in the briefing room..." He muttered to himself.

He threw on a flight jacket and and stepped out onto the ladder he had been using to get in and out of his aircraft since he had landed two days ago.
Throwing the magazine into his seat he secured the canopy of his plane and made sure it was secure, then stepped down and walked over to the barracks. Opening his footlocker he pulled out a long-sleeve PT Shirt and some PT Pants, and work out shoes throwing them on in a hurry and throwing his worn clothes into a small bag he designated for dirty clothes.

He began his daily work out and before he knew it he had 19 minutes left before he had to be in the briefing room. He began his one and a half mile run and ended it at directly outside of the building. He rushed inside sweating mildly, he stepped into the briefing room with four minutes to spare, and stood in the back observing the crowd and the new comers.

Amabel's eyes opened to the sight of a beeping alarm clock. The red analog numbers shining in her face like a spot light and the constant beeping ringing in her ears. She shifted and moved on her bed before finally giving in and getting up sitting on the edge of her bed and stretched her arms resting them on the bed afterwards. She looked at her alarm clock and shook her head tiredly before turning it off. She looked out the window in her dark room from where she sat it still looking like night outside, the sky slowly turning from black to a dark blue.

As She stood up pushing herself off the bed and fixed up her sheets, she liked to keep things tidy even if no one was going to see it and besides that, inspections as well. Amabel got dressed in her usual olive green Cargo pants and white short sleeve Shirt along with the the uniform black Boots. Along the way getting ready she grabbed a Baseball Cap to cover some of her hair she was so self conscious about nowadays what with her poor hair cut. She remembered the scar on the back of her neck when she accidently cut her self doing it.

The scar made her remember of her time in the service of Aurelia. The fur ball that made her leave in the first place and join the Mercanary industry. The yells for help over the radio and constant roar of engines as she went up, down, left and right in the sky. The smoke trails of Missiles floating in the air and tracers from Cannons. Someone from below would've thought it was art of some kind as the contrails weaved around in circles. Maybe it would've inspired them to join like she did and she hoped it didn't if it did. Joining up was one of the worst mistakes she thought she did in her life. Maybe it was art, but it was the Art of War.

She supressed the thoughts, knowing it would turn self destructive. Anything in her past could do this, which is why she was running from it, why she was in the 13th in the first place. It's not that she didn't like the squadron, she had no opinion on it and didn't care if the veterans here had an opinion of her if she belonged there or not and she didn't care if they did. She knew she was good enough to be here.

Another day away from Aurelia. she thought to herself as she opened the door to the hallway.

She walked down the hall and opened the door. As Amabel did so Hasuna passed by her on her routine that she normally did. Amabel was only here for a few days but she already knew the habits that people normally did every day in the mornings, days and nights. She herself normally went down to the town to take a break when needed around mid day and always during dusk she would help preform maintenance on her Mig-19. She really did love that plane sometimes.

After a long walk passing by the hangars and other buildings the sun finally starting to rise over the horizon shining against the sky in a great orange and yellow. She found the briefing room and walked in opening the door immediately seeing everyone, some new faces allthough most were ones she had already seen but never spoken to. She got into a attention stance and gave a mediocre salute before giving her name and Rank. "2nd Lieutenant Amabel Allard, Morena Squadron." She said plainly and tiredly before sitting down in the back row crossing her legs.
Heyo.

Liora Cohen woke to the sound of her buzzing alarm clock. She reached over to angrily smash the button to turn it off, swearing and muttering something about needing to buy a clock with a less annoying alarm in her native language. After turning it off she looked at the time. 6:00. She had an hour and a half before the morning's briefing. She got out of her bed, grabbed a towel hanging on the back of her door, and made her way through the pilot's quarters of Koga Air Base to the women's showers. When she arrived, she turned on the shower and stepped in. The water wasn't exactly hot, but it wasn't cold either. It was just the right temperature that she could just stand there and think about what exactly she was doing for a second.

A year ago she was a pilot of the Levant Defence Force, flying her Kfir on strike missions, surpassing everyone's expectations of her as few people expected her to get that far. It was because she was only doing strike missions, against insurgents armed with little more than knockoff AKMs and Katyusha rockets who had no hope of fighting back against her unless they were lucky enough to get their hands on some outdated Yuktobanian anti-aircraft guns, and it was for this reason she quit. She wanted to fight worthy opponents and become an ace pilot, just as her father before her. Had she stayed, by this time she'd probably be doing the exact same thing, except now instead of a Kfir she'd be flying a F-16. Instead, she left to become a mercenary pilot. She was more likely to get the experience she had wished for this way. Instead of defending her own country and being stationed at a modern, well maintained air base, she was now in Seian, a country she had little attachment to, at some old, barely maintained base in the middle of nowhere. But it didn't matter where she was, she had a job to do, whether it was defending her home country or fighting on behalf of someone else.

After finishing in the shower, Liora stepped out, dried herself and wrapped her towel around herself, and made her way back to her room. She grabbed her flight suit and quickly threw it on. Her suit still had the insignia of her squadron back home and a Levant flag on the right sleeve, and on the chest her name and "Levant Defence Force" were embroidered, in the native language of Levant. "These are probably going to have to go soon," she said to herself referring to the insignia as she looked in her mirror and began to braid her hair. When she was done with this she looked at her clock, which was now not loudly buzzing in her ears, and saw that her morning routine had taken a little over half an hour.

Liora opened the blinds on her window and looked out. From her room, she had a view of a few planes being prepped. One of them, a Mirage V, she instantly recognized as her plane, as it was painted in the same desert camouflage paint scheme used by the Levant Defence Force. She hadn't yet had a chance to test it, as her plane had only arrived last night, but she was assured it was in excellent condition. She probably could have picked a better plane than the Mirage V, but unfortunately the initial funding she was given to purchase an aircraft would not cover the cost of a Kfir, so she chose the next closest thing. She stared at the planes for a few more seconds before her stomach rumbled, and then set off to the mess hall to get some quick breakfast before the briefing.

At the mess hall, Liora grabbed her plate of eggs and toast, a couple packages of raspberry jam to spread on her toast, a cup of orange juice, and a cup of coffee in a paper cup. She sat away from the few other people who were in the mess hall at this time to eat as quickly as she could without being a completely disgusting slob. When she finished she checked her watch, ten minutes to the briefing. She went to grab another cup of coffee and set off for the briefing room.

When Liora arrived at the briefing room, a few of her future wingmen were already there. She took a seat near the back, hoping that for the moment nobody would really bother to talk to her. She knew she would have to get to know these people soon, but for now she'd really prefer not to have to talk to anyone unless it was strictly necessary.

6:29 am

It was on the apex of dawn, a moment where the sun wasn't quite ready to present itself and so, only allowed the thinnest band of light to trickle over the horizon, creating a cascade of colors that stretched into the darkened sky. Noel stood and observed the light show in almost utter silence, watching a new day begin in an unfamiliar country was something he had done dozens of times and each time it had felt alien, even though it was the same sun and sky no two sunrises were ever alike.

Standing there for far longer than he would care to admit, Noel was pulled from his trance by the shrill beeping of his digital wrist watch, a cheap piece of Osean tech that he had purchased with his first air-force paycheck back at the start of his career, it had been with him through thick and thin and was not only a useful gadget, but was it was symbolic of the journey he had been on, far reaches of the globe he could have only dreamed of visiting, coming from living in a ghetto to dining in a 5 star restaurant on the top of San Martins highest peak was a bit of a jump indeed.

7:30
Noel had been stood there for almost a complete hour and in all honesty, it had only felt like a couple of minutes. Air force life was kicking into gear all around him with the whir of machinery and the idle chatter of airmen whilst they busied about their work, that sound never changed nomatter what airbase you were on and it was a strangely comforting notion, it had been the background track to most of his adult life afterall. As he made way to the briefing room he spotted four heads enter the building, one of them was the squad lead and a fellow captain. To make up the last few dozen meters, Noel broke into a light jog to meet up with the rest of the pilots entering.

Already, some members had gathered in the main breifing room, a dismal looking room with a handful of metal foldout chairs surrounding a raised podium, a white canvas screen at the back offered a surface for the projector to work on and off to one side was a flippable whiteboard with some indistinguishable scribbles and some words faded onto it. Noel instantly spotted the Captain and slowly strode up towards him.

"You must be Captain Tallow. Great to meet you. I'm Captian Noel Silva." Noel greeted him almost a little awkwardly and extended one hand out.
Yo, that's mad.

Shinobu Wakahisa had already been up for some time by 6 o'clock. She had a daily exercise regimen that she followed religiously, with the same precision as she did anything else. Yesterday had been running, the three days before that had been weightlifting. Today, therefore, was calisthenics, her 'rest' day. 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, 100 crunches. You know, the relaxing sort of exercise.

It wasn't long before she was finished, and found that she would have plenty of free time before the 0730 briefing even if she took her time with breakfast. Of course, considering the quality of food at such a remote base, taking her time with breakfast was probably not a good idea. A quick, cold shower solidified her opinion of the base for the day, and she rushed through breakfast as per usual.

By breakfast's end, she had about twenty minutes remaining. It was less than she expected, so instead of heading into town, she decided to give her crimson F-16 a once- or twice-over before heading into briefing. Satisfied that it was in as good shape as ever, she headed into the briefing room at precisely 7:30.

0600 Hours

Drinking a cup of black coffee Vladimir looked at his new ride for the time being until he could appropriate more funds towards a better aircraft. The F-5E Tiger II was no aircraft to turn one's nose to. Armed with two 20 mm canons with 280 rounds each for a total of 560 rounds and 7 hardpoints that Vladimir used for a typical configuration of 4 AIM-9 Sidewinders and 3 Drop Tanks for increased range to 3700 km and increased anti-aircraft capabilities . The F-5E Tiger II was no long range sniper, it was an up close brawler meant for turn fighting, especially considering the AN/APQ-159's range was only 37 km and only useful against air targets, leaving it weak against any ground SAM emplacements. Vladimir smirked at the sight of the sky camouflage pattern and his personal emblem located on the vertical stabilizer of his aircraft.

Vladimir knew he would have a fun time with this craft while he had it, the missiles practically guaranteed two kills considering two AIM-9s fired at an aircraft in short order could typically take it down...though Vladimir knew from experience this wasn't always the case, if he wanted to score a kill with those things he'd best be behind the enemy and chasing them already rather than firing at them during the initial confrontation where both aircraft were coming right at each other. And even if those failed then Vladimir's 20 mike mikes would quickly perforate any enemies too close for comfort if he could outmaneuver them...and considering that's what the F-5E was built for anyway he was pretty confident he could come out unscathed once the fighting started.

"I almost feel sorry for those Beiarusians...almost." Vladimir stated to himself before taking another sip of the strong coffee.

0730 Hours

Dressed in his green flight-suit Vladimir found himself sat down in the front row of the briefing room lazily leaned back in his seat while waiting for the briefing to begin. When the influx of people, including his squadron leader, entered the room Vladimir merely changed his position to sit upright in his seat, he didn't snap up to salute or any of that military shit like a few others in the room. He was a mercenary, all these ranks and such were merely facades to make some tight-assed higher ups feel like they were still running a legitimate military operation and not actually just throwing a bunch of hired guns into the fire so they didn't start a war themselves while still reaping the rewards that came with violent action. Still, Vladimir wouldn't go around saying this so long as those tight-asses left him alone to do their fighting for them and get paid, as such he was silent and listening when the Captain walked in to begin the briefing.

Capt. Aleksei Tallow “Null”
07:37 September 18, 1992 // Koga Air Base, Seian

The small procession was moving through the hall with not a word said. Sewek was still in a sour mood, his co-pilot, Zelenko, mirroring the man’s temperament, and the Major had all the appearances of someone whose dog had just been run over. Even Angel was the opposite of her usual talkative self, perhaps sensing the slight tension that had arisen between them all. The silence would have been uncomfortable should Null had been one to care.

They were nearing the briefing room when a man approached them. A bit scruffy but presentable nonetheless. He held out his hand, speaking with a slight accent. Sapin? Or one of her colonies.

Ubaria wrote:"You must be Captain Tallow. Great to meet you. I'm Captian Noel Silva."

A bit awkward but Null returned the gesture, giving Silva a firm handshake. “Aleksei.”

It was a welcomed surprise to know that at least one of his new squadmates was well mannered. With any luck Silva would be the rule and not the exception.

Stepping into the room Null was greeted to a scrambling and a loud crack as a young woman banged her knee against the metal desk in her rush to stand. Despite this she kept her face impassive, her voice level, and saluted with trained efficiency.

Relikai wrote:“Good morning Sir! Second Lieutenant Haruna, Shimazaki, of Morena Squadron.”

A few others had saluted as well but their efforts had largely been overshadowed by the girl’s enthusiastic performance. Blocking the doorway, Null waved for the second lieutenant to be at ease as he stepped up to the front of the briefing room, tossing the thick folder atop the central podium with little care. The squad leader stood front and center with arms crossed. Before him was a collection of metal foldout chairs and the pilots of the newly formed 13th Squadron. Angel, Sewek, and Zelenko stood to his left, the Major and Kwan to his right. Zeeger remained by the door.

Null studied the collection of mercenaries. A few, like Shimazaki, seemed eager to prove themselves. Other were indifferent, and at least one had nodded in greeting. A bit informal but at least an effort was made to acknowledge the squadron leader. Save for a couple men scattered about most looked green. Not that Null was a hardened soldier with countless years under his belt, but some, like Shimazaki, could easily pass for flight school graduates. Everyone seemed to have kept to themselves.

An uncomfortable moment passed in silence before Null finally spoke, mustering enough confidence to attempt to take charge. “I am Captain Aleksei Tallow of the 101st. You may refer to me as Null, and I will be your squadron leader during operations. To my left stand Second Lieutenants Kimura, Sewek, and Zelenko. To my right is Colonel Kwan and Major Cocoran, who will be overseeing our deployment.

“To start off, those of you who joined up in hopes of seeing combat, you may be in for some bad news. Morena will be operating in an auxiliary capacity only. Our job is to look tough and that is all. The Seianese military will be conducting military exercises near Tokoka… Togore…” Null glanced over to Angel.

“Tokage,” she answered lightly, flipping through the discarded folder.

“Tokage River Valley. The main bulk of the force will be fifty kilos in from the border with only a small detachment in the valley itself. That’s where we’re gonna be. This is basically a stick waving contests, and as I said our job is to look tough in case the Beiarusians get any ideas.”

The Major, a large man that was less pilot and more grizzly, took a step forward. “This is a sensitive situation, and we don’t need any hotshots making a muck of things. As the man in charge of your paychecks I hope I make myself clear when I say that any unacceptable behavior will be dealt with harshly.”

“Don’t piss off the Major,” Null summarized.

Cocoran gave him a curt look but said nothing.

Null continued. “The exercise will begin at just after ten hundred hours. We will be flying a combat air patrol, and while I seriously doubt there will be any hostile actions we will be flying armed. Sewek and Zelenko will join us as AEW. Under no circumstances is anyone to cross the river. We’ll depart in two hours. Questions?”

Questions?”

Dan listened to the briefing throughly, noting that they were basically being paid to fly around the countryside. Dan didn't even bother to raise his hand to ask his question, he just merely shifted to an upright posture in his chair, and raised his head to speak. "Well, what happens if the Beiarusians get any ideas? Do we bug out or engage them?" He asked, and then took a sip of his coffee. The Major seemed a bit annoyed by the question, letting out a grunt, but the Capitan would reply. Dan, after finishing his sentence, relaxed in his chair again, and crossed his legs, and waited for an answer.

A man spoke up from the back. Relaxed and sipping at what was very likely coffee.

Tayner wrote:"Well, what happens if the Beiarusians get any ideas? Do we bug out or engage them?"

The Major seemed annoyed at the question, and Null was pleasantly surprised that the man refrained from chewing out the nonchalant pilot. The squadron leader need not think long before giving an answer. “I severely doubt that the Beiarusians are that foolish. They’ve relied on intimidation tactics thus far, and crossing an internationally recognized border would put them in the wrong. The yanks are sure to be watching the situation. If anything they’d want us to make the first shot to legitimize any actions. So don’t give them a reason.

“If for some reason you do come under fire you are not to engage unless otherwise stated. That said, do what you must to not get shot down.” The Major seemed to not like that addition to the ROE. “Anything else?”

Lt. Aiden "Frosty" Kelly
07:37 September 18, 1992 // Koga Air Base, Seian

Beiarusia wrote:"This is basically a stick waving contests, and as I said our job is to look tough in case the Beiarusians get any ideas.”

At the phrase "stick waving contest," Frosty grinned. He couldn't help it. At this point, he'd heard that phrase, and every variation of that phrase several times. And it almost always ended up with someone's pants being caught on the ground along with the smoldering wreckage of an aircraft or three. Yeah. A stick waving contest. Auxiliary capacity. No combat. Sure.

Beiarusia wrote:The Major, a large man that was less pilot and more grizzly, took a step forward. “This is a sensitive situation, and we don’t need any hotshots making a muck of things. After the Major spoke, Frosty chuckled to himself, and then quickly caught himself. He knew that would draw attention, so he immediately wiped his expression, not that it mattered. He was sitting in the front row. Again, it was something he'd heard before, and it was just comedic to him at this point, almost like "Be a gruff badass" was a chapter in some book titled How to be a squadron CO. The sad truth was, that just like the idea of an auxiliary mission, the result was usually the opposite. Instead of being some kind of rough and tumble asshole, Frosty knew in his heart of hearts that the Major was just a big stuffed animal, all soft and cuddly on the inside.

Beiarusia wrote:“The exercise will begin at just after ten hundred hours. We will be flying a combat air patrol, and while I seriously doubt there will be any hostile actions we will be flying armed. Frosty allowed himself to smile again and raised his hand, unable to restrain himself anymore from talking, his thick, relaxed Perfanesian accent slurring and sliding his words together, "Aye, I've gotta coupla questions, boss." He said the last word with emphasis, wondering how close he could push the envelope for insubordination. "What if there's a circumstance where we do cross the river? And, God forbid, there 'appened to be 'ostile actions, whaddya suppose we'd be lookin' at as 'ostile?" Despite his surly demeanor, Frosty was being cautious. He'd rather know what to expect if they were attacked. He didn't want to be caught with his pants down and his plane in the river they weren't supposed to cross.

Haruna nodded throughout the briefing, taking down notes in quick order. A mission! Her first sortie! Well, since it's one focused on defence, she wasn't sure of her ability to contribute. However, after hearing someone ask a question, Haruna decided to give it a try.

"Sir, what are our formation assignments? Are we to deploy with any specific weapon loadout?"

Another man spoke up from the front row, having raised his hand like a primary school student, his words marred with a thick accent that Null had difficulty placing. Sewek snickered under his breath as the man asked his question. Null glanced to the 2nd Lieutenant from the corner of his eye before attempting to decipher the man’s speech.

“This is a tense situation. The Beiarusians won’t hold back in engaging should anyone cross the border. If you get lost on the wrong side expect at the very least a quick interception. They claim to have one of the most competent militaries in south Osea. And they’re friends with Belka, so I’d rather not put that to the test.”

The Major felt the need to interject. “You cross the border without damn good reason to and I’ll make sure you’re grounded for a very long time. We are not to be the belligerents here.”

"I have a question," Shinobu said, speaking up for the first time that briefing since introducing herself upon entering the room.

"What kind of Beiarusian forces should we expect on the other side of the river? In case they do decide to fire first, as unlikely as that is to be."

As likely as that is to be, more likely.

Alexander sat in the last row of chairs. He was like a statue of stone. You only knew he was alive because of the blinking of his eyes and the very slight movement of his chest.

He eyed the major with impassive cold gazes. He has no problem with following orders but he disliked being threatened in anyway. That's not how he ticks, pay check our no pay check. Listening to the questions and answers of his fellow pilots and Captain "Tallow", he decided that would talk now.

Talking before Captain Null is given a chance to answer Lt. Shiobu inquiry, " Sorry for the interruption. With all due respect, I would like to remind Major Cocoran that I will follow orders to the letter if it's required but I don't take lightly to threats of any kind." He paused for a second continuing, "Neither to incompetence in leadership for any reason or cause".

He stopped talking; still in his same posture and facial expressions.

2nd Lt. Amabel Allard "Knot"

Amabel listened to the briefing and questions closely moving in her seat. Why do they want to try rattling their sabres at some country bigger than them? Let alone more powerful in a way with a strong ally. Maybe it was some way to tell them they can still fight but she doubted that especially since it was just a small squadron flying by the border. She wasn't a military strategist what so ever but something to her just smelt awfully Fishy about this.

She decided to ask her own question. "Sir, assuming the Beiarusians don't have any hilarious ideas, why are we trying to threaten a nation more powerful than theirs especially when the Belkans might have their back in a war?"

She had a bad feeling about this if her question didn't other wise show this. Maybe it was just her nerves or lack of sleep especially it being morning briefing. She shrugged it off and ignored it for now.

“Aleksei.” Came the simple response. Not wanting to be an irritation to the newly introduced Captain, Noel turned and seated himself in one of the comically small metal chairs that almost collapsed as he pressed his weight onto it, it held however.

Slowly person by person, the room started to fill with fellow pilots, some young and some old and a few inbetween, however Noel didn't want to make any assumptions of their skill yet. After a silent few moments the briefing began.

It seemed that their primary objective of their first deployment was to provide simple cover for some sort of military exercise, close to the river border with Beiarusia, it also doubled as a dick measuring contest between the two nations, relations were at an all time sensitive and this could be viewed as an act of aggression and so they were there to ward off any possible chance of an attack or incursion. Noel turned his attention to the major who looked like the kind of person that was angry all the time for no reason, he pushed himself forward to speak.

“This is a sensitive situation, and we don’t need any hotshots making a muck of things. As the man in charge of your paychecks I hope I make myself clear when I say that any unacceptable behavior will be dealt with harshly.”

Noel nodded passively and unconsciously mouthed the words 'Yes Sir' under his breath, a notion that could have been taken sarcastically if the Major had paid any attention.

Questions?”

Noel remained silent and listened into the information as the the other pilots shot the Captain their questions. Instead he just mused over the mission details as light as they were and started to formulate contingency plans and emergency preparations inside his head. This operation was a perfect chance for the squad to get a feel for the atmosphere and environment they would be working in, and also for meshing together a sense of teamwork and camaraderie between everyone, it was basically to make first impressions and for one, Noel was going to make it positive. He raised his hand and awaited a turn to push his question.

"How long can we expect to be in the AO? And will there be a need for AAR?"
Yo, that's mad.

The Paper Major

Jones stood at the back of the room leaning against the wall because he didn't feel like sitting yet, he had just got done with his post run shower and wanted to avoid cramping up; something that had started happening too him recently now that he was damn near forty. He was one of the last ones in the room and didn't pay too much attention to the other pilots because he didn't think he'd have time to socialize on this job which to his knowledge was "Show up, look tough, get paid, go home" or maybe he'd go take up his position in Levant again, the door was open and it was nice to get a regular check plus some of the Levanese women had just the right tan...

His musings were cut short when the unit CO and his entourage entered the room. The kids made a good show marching in with their flight suits and the base commander in tow and Garret stood at attention but didn't salute, rank did have its privileges and his friends in high places had ensured he would get to keep his working for Dorusia which meant that on paper (and pay grade) he was the equal of anyone in the room - his lack of salutation wasn't a sign of disrespect like so many of the other mercenaries here but an affirmation that he knew his place in the pecking order; that one being somewhere outside of it until they were in the air. He listened intently to the mission briefing and kept close attention to the speakers while they gave their pieces, nothing from the briefing was extraordinary, even the room itself seemed to be the same as every briefing room he had ever seen except for maybe the seat, Osean briefing rooms had such nice seats and he was sad that he hadn't appreciated them more when he worked for his homelands. Another reason to stand.

Then came the questions and answers.
Tayner wrote:"Well, what happens if the Beiarusians get any ideas? Do we bug out or engage them?"

A legitimate question, the kind he would have asked. The answer was pretty standard too but he noticed that the base commander and man in charge of signing their paychecks was trying to seem gruff and tough.

The United Remnants of America wrote:"Aye, I've gotta coupla questions, boss. What if there's a circumstance where we do cross the river? And, God forbid, there 'appened to be 'ostile actions, whaddya suppose we'd be lookin' at as 'ostile?"

That voice was familiar, he had served with a man with that voice for a long time in South Sotoa, he was deliberately making his accent hard to understand and he'd keep that up until he decided someone had earned his respect jut to be difficult - classic Kelly.

There were more questions, Squadron assignments was a good one, one he himself had intended to ask. Then another good one about what kind of aircraft the Beiarusians would be flying. Before either of those answered though another pilot stood and declared their willingness to follow any orders given... since they were speaking out of turn and at the same time interrupting the squadron commander to proclaim their willingness to follow orders... then he dropped the but don't dis me bomb. Whoops!
Launfal wrote:" Sorry for the interruption. With all due respect, I would like to remind Major Cocoran that I will follow orders to the letter if it's required but I don't take lightly to threats of any kind." He paused for a second continuing, "Neither to incompetence in leadership for any reason or cause".
"Hey kid. Calm down, getting threats from the commandant is just another part of the mercenary life. As long as they sign the paychecks you are beholden to take whatever verbal abuse they want to heap on you. Sit back down, or walk out and go home; but drop the tough guy act because your only interrupting the proceeding with your posturing."

Some might think it wasn't hi place but it really was, Garret was the highest ranking and among the most experienced of the mercenaries, or hell, anyone, in this room after all. He looked back to the CO and the base commander, "Please gentlemen, carry on."

Capt. Aleksei Tallow “Null”
Koga Air Base, Seian

The enthusiastic girl from before spoke up next.

Relikai wrote:"Sir, what are our formation assignments? Are we to deploy with any specific weapon loadout?"

A valid question. “Loadout will be on your discretion. The Feds will foot the bill for guns and fuel so don’t worry about being frugal. Go with whatever you’re comfortable with. As for formation, we will divide ourselves into two flights. Preferably each will be capable of conducting both air and ground operations, this way we can act quickly and efficiently should the unlikely need arise. Find a niche that suits you and fill it. Since I don’t know you, and I’d rather not pick and choose, I’ll allow you all to decide amongst yourselves. I will be heading Flight One. Flight Two will be lead by whoever wants the job. We have a few hours before we leave. Plenty of time to figure things out.”

A short woman was the next to ask a question.

Rupudska wrote:"I have a question. What kind of Beiarusian forces should we expect on the other side of the river? In case they do decide to fire first, as unlikely as that is to be."

Null made to answer when he was interrupted from the back.

Launfal wrote:"Sorry for the interruption. With all due respect, I would like to remind Major Cocoran that I will follow orders to the letter if it's required but I don't take lightly to threats of any kind." He paused for a second continuing, "Neither to incompetence in leadership for any reason or cause."

The Major was about to tear into the man when Null cut him off. Not that he enjoyed the pilot’s thoughts but he’d much rather not hear Cocoran burst into a rant about respect and doing as told. “I understand your concern, and I know that the Major can be a bit of handful” – Cocoran again sent a harsh look towards the squadron leader – “but you signed the papers. Dealing with unreasonable situations is part of the job.

“As for what to expect. We know that the Beiarusians will also be conducting military exercises starting today or tomorrow, so a military presence will be in the area. However, most of their forces should not be in the valley proper. Biggest threat will likely be combat aircraft. Wish I knew more, but if it’s any consolation I doubt the Beiarusians will deploy anything major in terms of air power.”

2nd Lieutenant Vladimir Tula
Koga Air Base, Seian

'Tokage River Valley, that's well within range of Bracken AFB if the Beiarusians decide that we're massing an invasion rather than performing military exercises. We'd have their entire Air Force on us within thirty minutes if things go south quick.' Vladimir thought to himself as he pulled out a navigation map from his front pocket in his flight suit to look over the area, thankfully Tokage was on the map.

As a few others in the room asked their questions Vladimir went over the map and found himself wondering what the exact path of their patrol was, if they got too close then this would become very, very ugly, very quickly. The likelihood of the situation was that the Beiarusians would have heavy SAM presence near the valley once they caught wind of this exercise alongside a whole host of other defenses just in case this was a false flag operation to precede a full blown invasion. Vladimir had a very good idea that the second an aircraft closed in on the border they'd have several locks on them from ground emplacements.

As such Vladimir waited for everyone to ask their questions and have them answered in order by Null, in the meantime he folded the map up so it focused only on the valley and its immediate surrounding area before seeing his opening and asking "Yeah, Null, what's the specific area we're patrolling, is it just the valley or the valley and the surrounding area? We seem to be a bit big of a squadron to just patrol the valley itself. Furthermore how close to the northern border is this AO? Because if we get too close some jumpy SAM operators might try taking potshots at us considering the situation."

Although she had come to Seian expecting action, Liora couldn't say she was overly disappointed that her first mission here was to be a glorified training exercise. Besides, she had heard enough stories from her father that these kinds of missions are more or less designed to push tensions to breaking points and there was likely to be at least one flaming wreck somewhere along the border today.

The Major was someone Liora could already tell she wasn't going to like. She understood he wanted to avoid an international incident, but Liora was going to take any and all defensive measures if her or her squadron mates were threatened by the enemy, deal with the consequences later. She'd rather shoot down the enemy first rather than have to attempt to avoid a missile. Not that she was going to open fire on the first enemy she saw, she was going to follow the rules of engagement. But first she needed to make sure these rules of engagement weren't going to put her or her squadron mates in danger so she raised her hand and waited for the current round of questions to be finished being answered before asking her own question.

"Under what circumstances do our rules of engagement allow us to engage and destroy hostile forces? I'm going to assume only in the event of a missile launch. Is this correct?" Liora asked. To an untrained ear, her accent would sound almost Belkan, but anyone who had spent time in Levant would be able to place her as being from there rather than Belka.

Capt. Aleksei Tallow “Null”
Koga Air Base, Seian

Empire of Donner land wrote:"Sir, assuming the Beiarusians don't have any hilarious ideas, why are we trying to threaten a nation more powerful than theirs especially when the Belkans might have their back in a war?"

Angel was the first to answer. “Because they’re bigger doesn’t mean they can bully everyone else.”

Null was actually surprised that his wingman hadn’t spoken up earlier. He picked up where she left off. “Don’t think of this operation as poking a bear. Both sides have argued over the valley for years now. In fact, I’m pretty sure that the entire border has been debated at one point or another. Seian has a legitimate claim and the Feds are keen to protect their friends.”

Seian was a valued trading partner. As it so happened several sources of rare earth metals were located near the northern border, a resource that Dorusia was willing to protect if only for its own interests.

Ubaria wrote:"How long can we expect to be in the AO? And will there be a need for AAR?"

“We will fly overwatch for the hour and conduct additional flights throughout the exercise as needed. Should some planes get too close to the river we’ll scramble to keep an eye on them. The exercise will last until the 22nd. Be ready to go at a moment’s notice, but in most cases we won’t be flying in full force as we are today. And Koga is close enough that refueling shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but if you find yourself on fumes for any reason then RTB.”

Independent States of Tula wrote:"Yeah, Null, what's the specific area we're patrolling, is it just the valley or the valley and the surrounding area? We seem to be a bit big of a squadron to just patrol the valley itself. Furthermore how close to the northern border is this AO? Because if we get too close some jumpy SAM operators might try taking potshots at us considering the situation."

“We will be following the river. Flight One will proceed east across the valley and beyond before doubling back. Flight Two will do the same but in reverse. Rinse and repeat. Should be a boring flight after a couple passes. We will be in sight of the river, and you’re right, not an ideal spot, but we have to remain over the ground unit as much as possible.”
