Please do not post on this thread. This is basically my Factbook done as one of the Lonely Multiverse Guides. This was a project started by Wight, the original creator of Lonely Multiverse: Approx Guide. Overall, the project was discontinued, but I still use mine as an informational thread.

CITIES OF NEU ENGOLLON

Burgunden
Image

Burgunden is the largest metropolis of Neu Engollon, located in the Zurich Canton. Being the major financial center of the Confederacy, the Neu Engollon stock market, as well as most of the largest companies are located here. The brewing industry has its origins here, and beer is one of the major exports of Neu Engollon, if not the most voluminous exported product. The world famous Alpen View Beer Festival happens every year here at Confederacy Park, near downtown. The major sponsor of the AVBF is Burgunden Breuerie, the largest, most successful company in Neu Engollon, with Jan Toft as its CEO and President. Franz Toft, his brother, is the Neu Engollon Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the other major sponsor of the Alpen View Beer Festival. The Toft family is extremely dominant in the business and societal affairs of Burgunden, and by extension, very influential in the Confederacy, probably the second most influential family behind the Tell family.
Banking is also prevalent here, with many banks conducting International business and investments from this northern Neu Engoleen city. EngolBanc is the main national bank of the Confederacy and its headquarters is here.

* Confederacy Park is almost as old as Burgunden itself. It is used for many functions, but the main one every year is the Alpen View Beer Festival, when they set up a huge pavilion in the center, with stages and brewer and food vendor tents surrounding it. On any given day you might also see a Pet expo, extreme sports or school league tournament or they even set up a large blank screen and show movies you can picnic to, some nights during the summer. Major concerts happen here as well with world entertainers.

* See the breweries, there are many, but the city's namesake is worth the trip alone. Brewtourists from around the world come to see the main Burgunden Breuerie.

* Movies: There is a Burgunden Film Fest every year.
You can also catch a regular film any night at a Paladin or Alhambra Cinema. Both companies show top rate films, both indie and blockbuster and dominate the cinematic theater industry, both in Neu Engollon, as well as the rest of the world.

* Tours of the stock exchange are given
* There are several museums
* Brought your clubs? Try some golfing at Burgunden Community Rec. Course.

Image

* Next to the main Burgunden Breuerie, is the first Burgunden BreuPub. This is the most popular restaurant destination in the Confederacy as well as the home of the top chefs in the region. As you know, Burgunden BreuPubs can now be found all over the world, but this is original granddaddy of them all.

* There is an Attico Drinkerie, a global competitor of Burgunden BreuPubs, also in the city. With the extreme capitalist nature of the Confederacy, competition is welcomed and encouraged. These guys have a good thing going and worth a trip if you have a second night after hitting the BreuPub, or save it for lunch. They have the gold medal winning Walrus Lager. Attico Drinkeries are headquartered in Nouvel Ecosse.

* The most prevalent chain of coffee shops in the world is CuppaCoffee. You can find a few in every major Neu Engollian city, but the largest one in the Confederacy is in Burgunden, which also boasts the regional headquarters. They are not prolific because they bludgeon one with marketing, but because they offer an incredible menu for a coffee shop and exceptional service.

* Major Sporting Venue: Toft Stadium (Burgunden) - Stada de Toft (114,788)

Named for one of the most famous families in Burgunden and in the Confederacy, the major family behind BDI and Burgunden Breuerie, this stadium is only dwarfed by the nearby Burgunden Dome a couple miles away, which hosts association football. Home of the Seasogs champion Burgunden Brawlers, Toft Stadium sells most of its seats for every rugby match held in its confines. The Brawlers are the current top sports team in the nation. Brawlers merchandise can be seen everywhere across the city and the northern parts of the nation, but especially on Saturday matchday afternoons in the pubs and bars that stretch for blocks away from the stadium.

* Burgunden Brawlers - The premier rugby union club in the Confederacy, representing the largest city in Neu Engollon. The biggest budget out of all the AVRU clubs in the nation, they are owned by BDI and the Toft family, so they can recruit the best players. They have won the Union Championships several times and won the most recent Seasogs, a tournament of the top domestic clubs in the world.

* Burgunden Bankers - The Helvetic Premier League Rugby club for Burgunden. They are the poor cousin to the Brawlers, with not nearly close to the budget or draw.

Telleursville
Image

The Capital City of Neu Engollon, while not the largest urban area, has the bulk of governmental, diplomatic and administrative activity in the nation. It is located in the Geneva Canton and is the most Gaulic in culture of all the Neu Engollian cities. You can find many of the same amenities and businesses here that you would find in either Burgunden or Panoli. The public transportation is top rate here, with the metro able to take you anywhere you need to go quickly, and trams that cover the routes the metro can't reach and the further outliers.

* Machu Picchu Pub - Mr. Romper bills this as the 'Only Non-Astyrian Pub'. From the nation of Ceni, Machu Picchu offers true comfort food standards and a great atmosphere. Outside of Astyria, few know how to party like the Cenians.

* Government Circle, where the Presidential House and Federal Council building are, as well as NESA HQ, Treasury building, and several other Ministries. If bureaucracy is your fancy, this is where to go.

* Embassy Row, Not just a bunch of brownstones with multi-national flags on them, (although there is that, too). Embassy Row also has several great restaurants, parks and shops to visit. It actually is pretty cool to see the varied architecture of all the embassy compounds lined up on either Diplomacie or Liberte Rue. The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Neu Engollon rivals the Defense Forces for the largest government budget. They take their diplomacy very seriously. There are literally hundreds of different national embassies packed along these two roads.

* Pine Park, on the outskirts of the Capital, is the headquarters of the National Gendarmes and the Ministry of Justice. All major criminal investigations are conducted from the Pine Park campus, as well as major internal security matters and counter-intelligence are handled within its structures. Access is restricted, but special tours are conducted from time to time.

* Forget to bring some nighttime or poolside reading? You can get your lit fix at gobooks, a Cratan chain that has recently found its way to the Confederacy. You can buy a hard copy here, or get set up with their digital downloads of e-books. You can even drop off your manuscript as they double as a publishing house. The chain has its headquarters and largest franchise in the Confederacy's Capital, near Government Circle.

Image

* Major Sporting Venue: Capital Center Field - Terrfel Centra Capitala (92,791)

The rugby arena for the capital of the Confederacy and home of the Gargoyles in beautiful Geneva Canton, not far from the lake. With a much larger capacity than most rugby stadiums, and a team that's been on the wane for awhile, there has been some inconsistent attendance like Schwartzgarten, but it is hoped that will turn around as they host the World Cup matches. Many government officials are expected to be in attendance for the Cup Group matches hosted here.

* Telleursville Gargoyles - The capital's top competitor for the Alpen Valley Rugby Union. They were once quite the dynasty, not so much anymore.

* Telleursville Caps - The Helvetic Premier League Rugby club

Panoli
The most Major Port of Neu Engollon lies on the Mederano Sea, in the Roman Canton of Liguria. It is vastly different in feel and climate than any of the other urban areas of the Confederacy, with a more Latin/Riviera flavor and a more laid back approach to daily life. Night life is epic here with the casinos at Monte Carlo and many clubs along the coast. It is a popular cruise line destination. The International Grand Prix is held here as well as many other sports. Some would say that the Dockers, the rugby union club for the city is the best in the nation, but, as expected, there is a three way battle with Burgunden and Ludenthal for the title to the Alpen Valley Rugby Championship. Nearby San Remo also boasts one of the Top Ten teams, the Ospreys, who play in San Remo Stada de Urbana. The amount of industry, commerce, tourism and migrant traffic that come through this port is staggering to the average individual, and the odd dichotomy of such a busy port with the laid back resort atmosphere just down the beach is hard to be believed until you visit.

* Major Sporting Venue: Panoli Anchors Bank Stadium - Ankora Banc Stada de Panoli (77,785)

Home of the AVRU clubs, the Some Village Wanderers and the Panoli Dockers, Anchors Bank Stada is to the south of the Confederacy, what the Toft Stadium is for the north. Always rocking and the central focus of sporting life in this resort, recreational area that is also a huge sea port and industrial gate for the nation. The greater Panoli area includes San Remo and Nice, also filled with a large amount of rugby fans. It is likely that the next AVRU and Seasogs champion will come from the Mederano coastal area. There is not a chance an open seat will be left in this stadium where the breeze brings in the salty air of the Mederano sea.

* Panoli Dockers - The AVRU club for this major coastal city. They almost always make it into the top three and the Seasogs and are fierce rivals of the Brawlers and the Wolves, as well as new upstarts the Wanderers.

* Panoli Gamblers - The Helvetic Premier League Rugby club. They do pretty well and usually make it into the finals for the championship.

* Some Village Wanderers - An honorary Neu Engollonian club, hailing from the crew of the Some Village Ark. They have been welcomed into the AVRU, in the spirit of sportmanship and International cooperation and friendship. Having played several seasons with the AVRU, they made it to the finals and the Seasogs every time, taking the gold in their fourth season in the AVRU. They have just as loyal a fan base in the large port city as the Dockers.

Image

* Going near the industrial and commercial docks is not recommended, unless you are conducting business there and in a group. Not only is it obviously a dangerous area due to the heavy equipment and machinery, but there are some unsavory elements that do tend to prowl the area. Yes, it seems very noirish and B-movie like, but there really is a rough crowd by the docks and those that wander into that district, away from the resorts and beaches do so at their own peril. You have been warned!

Vusurlac
A smaller burg, with a more regional feel. It is harder to get by on English in this town, so study up on your Frandit. There are some great places to shop, explore and eat. Vusurlac lies on a lake, which is beautiful in the winter when it freezes over. In the summer, several aquatic activities and sports happen along the lake's shores.

* The ancestral Tell Family Home is not too far a drive from Vusurlac, in the smaller burg of Engollon. Wilhelm Tell, the near mythical hero and revolutionary patriot of the Confederacy fled with his family from the Teutonic side of Neu Engollon to escape his pursuers, the Austrog invaders, in the 14th Century. The legend is well known that he was arrested and forced to shoot an apple off his son's head, in order to appease the Austrog Vogt, Gessler. He successfully completed the feat, managing to insult Gessler further in the process, promising to send the Austrog interloper to his death. He was being lead across Lag Lucerne by Austrog captors, when he leapt into the water, breaking his bonds and swimming to freedom. He came back to avenge himself and rescue his son.
He assassinated Albrecht Gessler, the main Austrog puppet ruler of eastern Neu Engollon, and fought through hundreds of troops with his small group to escape. Later, he rallied the Neu Engoleen forces in driving out the Austrog invaders from the Confederacy. The current Foreign Affairs Minister is the twenty seventh direct descendant of Wilhelm and shares his name. William Tell XXVII's son, General Nelson Tell, is the current head of the Uli-Schwyz-Galien PMC, which is registered in Neu Engollon and has been a fixture of the Confederacy's history for centuries. Several other members of the Tell family have been leaders and prominent members of the Confederacy.

* Further away from the lake, nestled into a secluded area, lies the Diamond Star production facilities. This Auroran Confederacy based corporation is the major automobile and commercial vehicle producer in Neu Engollon. They have a very eco-green philosophy for a major auto industry producer. Their trucks and autos are some of the most premier, precision vehicles to be found in the world. Tours are available by appointment.

* There are several NEDAF Air Bases within a short distance. At various times during the year, they open up the base for special events, air shows and tours, but are restricted otherwise.

* Just a short drive to Goertenthal is The Austrog Border War Museum - The folley of this unnecessary conflict is on display. The Austrog Border War (1920-21) was a small abnormal blip in the normally neutral, peaceful nation's history. Deemed an overreaction and miscommunication, it resulted in several deaths on both sides, using surplus military materials from World War I, it was the first modern engagement that Neu Engollon used the airplane, tank and machine gun. Thankfully, that other innovation of WWI, gas, was not used during the war, or casualties might have been more catastrophic. Several heroes and also controversial figures of the Confederacy had origins in this conflict, including General von Spielkommert, the first Neu Engollian executed for treason since the Napoleonic invasion.

* Major Sporting Venue: Schwartzgarten Municipal Stadium - Burgen Stada de Scwhartzgarten (87,452)

Home of the Warriors, the city stadium for Scwhartzgarten has been struggling for attendance for regular season matches, but does well during exhibitions, and the rare post-season match, and is expected to draw huge crowds for the World Cup. The Warriors are on a long road back to the top 10 in the AVRU and rugby has had a rocky history here, but the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport are hopeful this will be a new renaissance for the sport.

* Schwartzgarten Warriors - The AVRU club. At the moment, Schwartzgarten does not have a club competing in the Helvetic Premier League.

Ludenthal
Ludenthal is a somewhat sleepy town, but waking up slowly. This is one of those picturebook Alpen cities with the A-frames on main street and flower boxes on every building front. They do boast the Ludenthal Wolves, one of the star rugby clubs of the AVRU. This town has always boasted a tourist industry for the idyllic photo opportunities alone.
It's history was somewhat clouded by a group, the NatonSozializmers, or 'Grey Shirts', fascists that organized here during the late 1930's. Ludenthal, it should be noted, is the only place where fascism took root in Neu Engollon during that era, or since. There were violent, brutal clashes in the streets between the fascists and the communist/Christian Democrat/anti-fascist coalition. Preparing for invasion, and trying to keep panic down, the NEDM was on a rapid scale of mobilization. The Militia was called upon to neutrally suppress the riots, and bring serenity back to Ludenthal. It was clear the NEDM didn't want a possible fifth column operating, should the Austrogs decide to invade, so they were far from neutral towards the Grey Shirt activities. By 1941, most of the NatonSozializmers were in prison, where they found themselves for the duration of the war and beyond. Nothing was ever heard from the Grey Shirts again, and no tears were shed over their disappearance in the Confederacy.

Image

* It hasn't happened in a long time, but there have been reports of neo-nazi types hanging about, trying to relive the past. Mostly harmless and ineffectual, they try to conduct rallies, when not being bumrushed out of town.
Be aware that if you do see such a group forming, you should get clear, because the Anti-fascist crowd will soon be on the scene to issue them a one way ticket back out and over the Austrog border. These political clashes do still happen from time to time in Ludenthal, due to its cloudy history.

Ciavno
Image

A fairly large city nestled in the Alps, Ciavno has a feel much like it's cousin cities across the border in the Italian Alps.
Home of the Alpen Regimental Training Academy. This is where the elite Alpen Regiments of the NEDM train for mountain and air assault warfare, as well as guerrilla, scout/recon and counter-insurgency tactics. One of the Alpen Regiments is usually committed to most NSIPF peacekeeping missions.

A good sized city, this is the major city in the Rhone canton and a center of activity. Many of the best Biathlon skier/shooters hail from Albertville. * Major Sporting Arena: Rhone Alpen Stadium - Stada Alpen de Rhone (105,853)

In the largest city in the heartland of the Confederacy, in Rhone Canton, lies this larger capacity venue. No matter the fact that the Albertville Ibex club barely ever squeaks into the post-season of the AVRU, this stadium is always filled with fans and attendees that enjoy the rowdy atmosphere, as much as the match on the pitch. In fact, Rhone Alpen is notorious, having had two riots in the past 10 years after some controversial matches while hosting their local rivals, the Annecy Anvils and Enbrun Saisers. There will be extra security on hand and authorities are cutting down on beer and liquor sales during World Cup matches to curtail the violence and mayhem that always seems to bubble to the surface here. Plus, with International teams at play here, it is expected to be a bit more sedate.

* Albertville Ibex - The AVRU club

* Semnoz Shepherds - The nearby town of Semnoz contributes a club for the Helvetic Premier League, and they are just as popular for league code fans in Albertville as in little sleepy, secretive Semnoz.

Konstanz (KERZ)
Image

Konstanz is a recreational lake area on the border of Neu Engollon, Nikolia and Smertolina, as well as the name of the major city in the sub-region that encompasses environs on both sides of the Neu Engollon-Nikolian border. It is also known as the KERZ or the Konstanz/Konstanca Economic Resort Zone, under the auspices and special treaty of the Empire of Nikolia, Confederacy of Neu Engollon and the Principality of Smertolina. All the towns surrounding the shores within a 15 km radius of the two lakes, Konstanz and Waldtien, in this special zone are free of normal taxes, tariffs, duties and any restrictive political measures and movements of citizens. All citizens of the region of Astyria can enjoy the benefits, but the citizens that actually reside in the KERZ also have special privileges that aren't enjoyed by citizens in the rest of their respective nations, or many other parts of Astyria.

* Major Sporting Arena: Konstanz City Stadium - Burgen Stada de Konstanz (Nikolian: Градски стадион Констанца)

The major athletic stadium for the twin cities area, which lies right on the border between the two halves of the city, and the Confederacy and Empire. Sports such as association football, rugby and track and field have taken place here and it is a major host to all types of other events as well as sporting events. The Konstanz Owls rugby football club plays here in their matches for the Class B Minor Union. At the moment, the franchise is fighting hard to be admitted to the AVRU, and rumor has it, they are considering dropping another team to bring in Konstanz. Also, should this happen, the Owls are set to take over the Stadium permanently.

SPORTS

RUGBY

The most popular sport by far in Neu Engollon is rugby. All codes are played in the Confederacy. With the union clubs playing sevens in the off season. The Alpen Valley Rugby Union is the main rugby union in the nation. Rugby League also has a league of clubs, but they don't tend to share the same level of notoriety. Neu Engollon has sent a National Squad for all three code World Cups, winning high accolades. In the Union World Cup (#20) they took 3rd place; in the League World Cup (#11) they took 5th Place; in the Sevens World Cup, they took 8th Place.

OTHER SPORTS

Neu Engollon has also competed in several other minor sports in the International field, taking high honors, and sometimes the top spot; including Bandy (2nd), Brob Ball (1st), Dog Sled Racing (2nd) Biathlon (Leader) and Dwile Flonking (1st). Dwile Flonking is a 'sport' that revolves around drinking heavily, so it is no wonder that Neu Engoleens would be able to win it. Drinking has been a national sport since before they knew dwile flonking existed.
Recently, Neu Engollon entered a National squad for the Association football 65th World Cup and 52nd Baptism of Fire, which are currently being played. This is the first time Neu Engollon has joined International association football (or soccer), the most popular global sport. This could really put Neu Engollon on the map for International Sport (besides rugby) or turn the Confederacy off to 'footie' for good. Also, another first for the Confederacy is the World Cup of Hockey, the 21st for the world, the first for Neu Engollon; and look for an International cycling team soon.

Domestically, one can see several other sports being played besides the above mentioned, depending on the season. Women's Flat track roller derby is popular, as well as water polo and volleyball. There are some minor basketball and hand ball leagues. The lakes, as well as the coast, around the Confederacy are made good use of, with sailing, jet skiing and other amateur aquatic competitions happening during the warmer months. During the winter months, skiing, snowboarding (downhill, cross country and freestyle), mountain climbing and snowmobile racing are all immensely popular. With a relatively peaceful existence, enjoying peace for almost a hundred years and not seeing a major war in over 200 years, Neu Engollonians have found lots of time to devote to peaceful, fun enterprises. Athleticism is a highly respected trait among Neu Engollonians.

GETTING TO NEU ENGOLLON

There are several ways to get into the Confederacy, just like any modern nation. Overland, you have the AlpenRail (part of the regional Astyrail system), and a world class Autobahn System. As part of their defense, many of these routes come through choke point passes. In other words, you are coming in on bridges and overpasses nestled in valleys, surrounded by hills or mountains cragged with bunkers and deeply emplaced guns. The bridges are built with special explosives inside the structure, to blow in times of invasion. Over 87% of the routes into Neu Engollon are configured this way.

Also, you have many world class airlines flying into the five biggest major airports, Alpenhorn International (Telleursville), Burgunden International, Albertville International, Schwartzgarten International and Panoli International Air and Sea Port. Once in the Confederacy, EngolAir (a division of ViZionAir) can connect you to any other city within Neu Engollon, and they even have a small prop carrier division to reach the smaller remote towns. Helicopters operate to some of the very difficult to reach mountain towns without airstrips. EngolAir has limited International flights at the moment. Neu Engollon relies on other regional and globally registered air carriers to bring in visitors.

Getting to the Confederacy by sea is relatively easy, as well, because many passengers and cruise lines dock at either Panoli or Nice, along the coast. Obviously, the Riviera coast of Neu Engollon is in high demand many months of the year, so be sure to book your passage well in advance. Panoli is a huge port, handling commercial, tourist and industrial traffic extremely efficiently. Besides the cruise ships and the planes coming in overhead, there are also frequent hovercraft and ferries coming in from nearby Trellinese, Gaulic and Roman ports. Panoli has several piers that are owned and operated by Industries, Military, Trade Groups and other National interests, as well as rented marina berths.

GETTING THROUGH CUSTOMS!

Customs can be strict. Many florae and faunae are restricted from entry, as well as many native species are not allowed to leave. Security are on guard for narcotics, as well as large undeclared currency packages and other suspicious items. Security at sea and airports, train stations, and other points of entry is performed by the NETA (Neu Engollon Travel Authority) a customs bureau run jointly by the Ministry of Transportation and Pine Park, the criminal investigations division of the National Gendarmes.

Visas are not required for short trips. However, should you be from outside of Astyria and find your trip extends past two weeks, they will get in touch with you and ask you to make your way to the local customs office pronto to get a tourist or business visa. They are very lenient towards business purposes, being a very capitalistic society, but bring paperwork to back up your need for the visa; or apply for a work or student visa. You will be issued temporary papers to show with your passport, upon application for the visa. Should you not bother to show up at the customs office within a day, you are sure to be encouraging a visit from a gendarme next, possibly even one of the famed Pine Park detectives. It seems lackadaisical, but they are anything but loose about it. Tabs are most likely kept on suspicious incoming characters and immigration, while not exclusionary, is tightly controlled. If you try to disappear within the country, they will come find you. It has happened several times with hefty jail sentences involved.
It is best to avoid all the hassle by applying for a visa ahead of time by contacting your local Neu Engollon embassy or consulate. Regional citizens with a valid passport or ASTID (Astyrian ID card) can stay for up to four months without a visa.

GETTING BY IN FRANDIT

ORIGINS

Français, Deutsch, Italien = Fran * d * it

During the early days of the Confederacy, the cantons were still in a fractious state, and the loose union was in danger of disintegrating. The Teutonic ethnic cantons were openly ceding power to the royals and powerful nobles of Austrakia that in turn recruited and dragooned Teutonic Neu Engollians into their private armies. The Gaulic cantons were doing virtually the same, allowing the kingdoms of their ethnic kin across the western Terre Des Gaules border to have almost free reign in their affairs. Roman cantons would exclusively trade with the various Roman city-states to the southeast.

As the Federal government attempted to exert more control after the reaffirmation of the Articles of Confederation, steps were taken in order to increase a stronger union and distinct national identity. One of these was the development of Frandit, a blending of the three main languages (French, German and Italian) within the Confederacy. This was due to the efforts of dozens of commissioned scholars, as well as building on the beginnings of three organic variations of a pidgin dialect that had already been in use for the common folk to communicate and trade with other neighboring ethnic cantons and nations. It was the Confederacy's scholars that blended the pidgin dialects (French-German; German-Italian; French-Italian) into one lingua, adding structure and grammar rules as well as deciding on the best words for particular usage situations.

In 1374, the first tomes of the rules and vocabulary of Frandit were released, after exhaustive work from monks at the behest of Confederacy officials. All official decrees and documents were then to be written in the new language. It would take another 40 years or so to get all the cantons in line with this matter.

Along with efforts to eject foreign influence, the language was enforced on the noble class, but also taught extensively to the lower, agrarian classes, who had often been neglected in instruction and education up to that point. Frandit being the first written language the lower classes were exposed and encouraged in, it took on like wildfire. Frandit had a firm hold for three centuries until Common (English) began to be widely promoted in order to communicate with Teremaran neighbors who were all adopting the new language to strengthen economic growth and ties both within and outside the region.

MODERN USAGE

Today, Frandit still survives and is an officially recognized domestic language. Government documents are still published in both English and Frandit and will be for the foreseeable future. Its use is infrequent and considered quaint or simple slang in the urban areas where Common/English is firmly rooted, while Frandit holds out strong in the rural population, the 'agrarian lower class'.

Use outside of the Confederacy is minimal to rare. Across the western border in Gaul, where Gaulic French is firmly entrenched, Frandit is considered an abomination, even when spoken by the border folk. The Roman and Austrak neighbors seem only a bit more tolerant.

The Confederacy government still issues updated official Frandit language dictionaries and literary usage guides. More English influenced words keep seeping into the everyday usage of the language and it's not too rare to hear citizens speaking a mish-mashed blend of the two lingua.

NEDM by Military Defense Group

Postby Neu Engollon » Sun Sep 15, 2013 10:23 pm

THE NEDM (NEU ENGOLLON DEFENSE MILITIA)
~ 4,300,000 approx. total troops (this total includes immediate reserves, support & logistics, as well as rotating conscripts) Militia reserves are called up for training and alerts, as well as regular term of service, not including conscripts. Ground combat troops are split between Regular Infantry militia, the Alpen Regiments (Elite mountain troops), Special Ops, NEDM-DGC and Marines. 3 (1 Infantry and 2 Alpen) Regiments are air assault capable. While the Alpen Regiments have elite training, the most elite soldiers of the NEDM are the NEDM-DGC (Diplomatic Guard Corp), who are tasked to guard overseas diplomatic compounds and Embassy Row in Telleursville. The Confederacy takes its diplomatic relations very serious.

There is Mandatory Conscription for men 18 years of age for 2 years, for women 20 years of age. College deferment is allowed, but hard to obtain. Women can serve in combat front line roles, but it is not mandatory for females and on volunteer basis only. Logistics and support is typically women's mandatory selected roles - all conscript soldiers go on reserve status after time of service. After age 45, men are volunteer reserves only, mandatory service has ended. For women, age 35 is the cutoff.

NEVMR (Neu Engollon Volkgen Milizar Reserva)
The VMR, or the Militia Reserves, are only called upon in case of extreme emergency or national invasion. All citizens eligible are required to stay up to date on their registration and address and must drill twice a year with their unit in order to coordinate contingency plans. Arms are kept at home in safe lockers, except for heavy arms which are kept at the nearest Militia armory. Many of the VMR are support role rather than infantry, but are still required to keep proficient in their marksmanship.

There is a suspected basement bunker/underground garrison network in place, with quick conversion materials on hand to turn highways into Air Force runways, Hidden AA and AT in recessed caverns and bunkers in the mountains, and all passes and bridges into the Confederacy mined and fortified. There is also suspected to be a scorched earth policy in place. Neu Engollon would become very inhospitable during a full foreign incursion.

Mechanized or Armor Reg. size = 3,500-4,500
Infantry or Alpen Reg. size = 6-7,500
NEDM-DGC Reg. size = 12,300

There are 3 Military Defense Command Groups that make up the NEDM: Northern MDCG, Central MDCG, Southern MDCG. There are HQ Command Staff appointed to each, located in Schwartzgarten, Vusurlac and Torino respectively. Regiments have some leeway to act independently during an emergency but open lines through several layers of communication are kept with the MDCG's. Regiments and Squadrons are flexible and able to be swapped between the three commands depending on the zone of crisis/emergency. The Confederacy of Neu Engollon does not have divisions and the only 'corps' is the Marine Corps, falling under NEDN Command.

ELITE UNITS OF THE NEU ENGOLLON DEFENSE FORCES

The Alpen Regiments

The Alpen Regiments make up a considerable amount of the ground troops of the NEDM, and could be considered by some to be only a bit more elite than the regular infantry. Neu Engollians view mountain warfare as akin to an artform or more accurately, a science, and so it is deeply ingrained in the national psyche that defense begins with solidly trained mountain troops, as they will be the first line to deter an incursion by an enemy. The Alpen Regiments saw the most action in their storied history during the Austrak Border War of 1920, when they fought off their equals in the Austrak mountain fighters, along with the rest of the might of the Austrakia Republik. In recent decades, other scattered border skirmishes with the Austraks have seen the Alpen Regiments continually on call to defend the Neu Engollian Alps.

They have also seen recent action in the last few years, committed by the Federal government to peacekeeping engagements around Teremara, most notably in Glisandia to assist in pushing out the People's Red Army of the Yellow Star Republic.
They were able to utilize their tactical high terrain skills to great effect.
Currently, there are 6 full Alpen Regiments in the NEDF Order of Battle, some active duty, some made up partially or entirely of reservists.

In order for Defense Militiamen to qualify for the Alpen Regiments, they must complete training beyond basic infantry skills at the Schiele Escol de Montkrieguer (Schiele School of Mountain Warfare) at Fort Mandamo, Ciavno. Fort Mandamo is considered the heart of the Alpen Regiments and where Alpen troopers discover their meddle. At the Schiele School, Alpen trooper recruits learn to combat ski, hike, climb, maneuver and set up ambushes, utilizing the terrain to best advantage.

The Special Operations Battalions

The SO Battalions are a more recent addition to the NEDM Order of Battle, having been developed in the late 1940’s as Neu Engollon took lessons from the intense action embroiling the rest of the region around them during the Great War, for which they maintained their neutrality during its course. The need for elite commandos to do specialized missions and work behind enemy lines, with local populations inside or out of the Confederacy, as well as work in small teams to disrupt enemy lines and logistics, conduct reconnaissance, target officers and perform other specialized, difficult tasks was paramount.

Today, all of these skills are taught at the Raedler Escol de Speziala Opershaftsa (School of Special Operations) at Fort Vitar, San Remo. In addition, the SO Battalion candidates must attend the Henri Guisan Escol de Avangesha Modkrieguer (School of Advanced Modern Warfare) at Fort Leba, Lausanne and select courses at the Wilhelm Tell Escol de Avangesha Tirseffera (School of Advanced Marksmanship) at Semnoz Armory Proving Grounds, Semnoz and the Marie-Louise von Franz Escol de Psicologik Opershaftsa[/b] (School of Psychological Operations) at Semnoz Militia Secure Facility, Semnoz.

The Special Operations Battalions have seen action in the recent peacekeeping operations, as well as maintaining the border.

The 324th Special Amphibious Operations Battalion

While most of them conduct operations exclusively on land and insert via air or ground vehicle, one Special Operations Battalion in the Defense Forces actually falls under the Ministry of the Navy. The 324th Special Amphibious Operations Battalion, also known as the ‘Black Frogs’, perform most of the tasks and possess the skills that the other Special Operations Battalions do, as well as being able to perform amphibious operations and underwater demolitions. They could be compared to the US Navy Seals or British SBS, and are just as highly trained.

They must complete all the specialized Defense Militia schools that the other SO Battalions do, as well as the Franko Rinderknecht Escol de Amfibkrieguer (School of Amphibious Warfare) at Fort Sirène, Antibes, run by the Navy and Marine Corps.

The Black Frogs were also utilized during peacekeeping operations to defend friendly ports and also clandestinely patrol Neu Engollian ports on a regular basis to make sure they are safe.

The Cyber Warfare Battalions

The Cyber Warfare Battalions for the most part do not see action overseas, but for some specialized missions. There are two battalions, with one of them made up entirely of reservists that rotate in and out from their civilian computer programming and IT jobs and the other being a third reservists.

The Cyber Warfare Battalions operate from several top secret facilities around Neu Engollon. Three are rumored to be the Federal Militia Center in Genève, the Semnoz Militia Secure Facility in Semnoz and The Haven, somewhere in Compte-Alpe Canton, where they work in conjunction with the NESA Intelligence agency and Pine Park, the domestic counterintelligence and major criminal investigation service.

After BMIT, and completing some select courses at the Raedler School of Special Operations, probationary candidates must graduate with high honors from the Marie-Louise von Franz Escol de Psicologik Opershaftsa (School of Psychological Operations) at the Semnoz Militia Secure Facility. Several Cyber Warfare troopers have also taken courses at equivalent civilian schools and taken advanced programming and computer courses. An undisclosed number were former hackers that are serving out their sentence for cyber hacking crimes by ‘working for the good guys’.

The Diplomatic Guard Corps

The DGC is the most elite unit of the Defense Militia and arguably all of the Defense Forces. Selection is made from the best volunteer recruits from both the Alpen Regiments and Special Operations Battalions, and in rare cases, exceptional candidates from the regular infantry. Despite this, the rate of success is slim for candidates and 84% flush out before successful completion of the program. There are two full regiments of the DGC, one which is always on call for deployment in part, or full, overseas to come to the aid of Confederacy citizens in jeopardy. The other regiment is divided between embassy guard duty overseas, and other vital Neu Engollian installations, and guarding top Federal government personnel and structures in the capital, as well as acting as a QRF (Quick Response Force) to come to the aid of threatened foreign dignitaries, embassies and consulates in the Confederacy, along with the Federal Council.

Probationary members are expected to have completed training at all the NEDM special schools, as well as the Navy/Marine Corps School of Amphibious Warfare. In addition, they must complete their final bit of training at the Escol de Elite Proshuza (School of Elite Protection) at The Federal Militia Center, Genève.

One Battalion of the DGC was recently sent to the war torn island archipelago of Ala Moana in order to rescue Neu Engollian and Western civilians and scientists, also aiding in the successful pacification of the islands in conjunction with Scottopian and other EATA forces.

Some Customs and Laws

Postby Neu Engollon » Thu May 29, 2014 10:24 am

LAWS AND CUSTOMS OF THE CONFEDERACY

The Confederacy is a very liberal, democratic nation in most instances. All beings and citizens dwelling or visiting in the Confederacy will have their civil and human rights respected; including freedom of religion, race, ethnicity, political beliefs, sexual orientation and most other aspects that effect the social and psychological being of a citizen or visitor, as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others. One might notice that some cantons are more conservative than others, and some behaviors may be frowned upon, but following these guidelines, some social awkwardness will not land a person in jail or afoul of the law. With most aspects of the Confederacy's society and regulations, following common sense and logic will keep most from running afoul of the law.

1. Firearms and weapons. This may be considered an exception by some, where it is their perceived right to bear arms whenever they choose in public in their own nation. In the Confederacy, many of adult age have arms stored securely in their home for times of national crisis as they are either part time serving members of the Militia, in the reserves, or serving their conscription time of service. They do not bring these arms out in public unless they are transporting them to Militia/Reserves drill or exercise, or in obvious times of National crisis. Also, in rural areas, firearms for hunting purposes are allowed to private citizens, under certain, licensed, controlled conditions. Visitors to the Confederacy, however, do not have a valid reason to possess weapons or firearms in open society, or bring said weapons or firearms into the Confederacy, and they will be prosecuted accordingly. In order for an alien resident or visitor to use a firearm in the Confederacy, say when invited on a hunting trip for instance, they must apply for a special license.

2. Alcohol and other substances. Brewing culture, beer, and imbibing of spirits is an open, pervasive part of Neu Engollian culture. It is not frowned upon, other than when one is heavily intoxicated, alone and not in a supportive group to help monitor their actions. They might be taken into custody overnight for safety's sake by municipal, cantonal or National gendarme authorities. Drunk driving is illegal. Responsibility while under the influence is stressed. Numerous public transportation alternatives are available for those too intoxicated to drive. In many large cities, volunteers drive shuttles around to pick up intoxicated individuals and carry them to their destinations, no questions asked. The legal drinking age is 17. Marijuana is legal, except in large volumes without proper distribution licenses. Other narcotics are not legal, including hallucinogens. Importation of alchohol is controlled, and clearance should be sought. Importation of recreational narcotics is illegal. Importation of prescription narcotics and those used for spiritual purposes is tightly controlled.

3. Borders, Migration and Freedom of Movement. The only restricted areas are certain clearly marked governmental or military installations and property. As well, there are a handful of towns, mostly in the center of the Confederacy, that are deemed off limits to foreigners due to sensitive government or military installations. Visitors must have valid passes to be in or near these areas, or they are liable to be detained, questioned and prosecuted. Border controls are tight and all items and baggage are subject to search. Generally, exit and entry restrictions are looser for ASTID (Astyrian ID) carrying Astyrians. Residents of rogue states in the region and non-signatory states of the Astyrian Accords, will not have valid issued ASTIDS, and are treated as any other foreigner from outside the region. Immigration controls are tight, and visas are necessary for non-region residents' entry. This is due mostly to spatial issues with the small amount of available habitable land, urban congestion and an already bountiful population of over 65 Million citizens and permitted residents.
Travel in the Konstanz Economic Resort Zone, on the northern border of Neu Engollon surrounding Lag (Lake) Konstanz and Lag Waldstein, is very free, with little political controls, duty free shopping and a very relaxed, recreational atmosphere in the 15 km inclusion zone around the lakes. The KERZ, besides the Confederacy, also includes and benefits the Kingdom of Nikolia and the Principality of Smertolina. While having gained entry into the Confederacy, should you be in either the Kingdom or Principality and attempt to travel past the 15 km zone around the lake shores, you will most certainly be stopped and asked for proper documentation, subject to the full laws and possible detainment in either nation for any transgressions.

4. Crime. There are some urban areas that have higher levels of crime than others, but most often, law abiding citizens are unaffected, as well as visitors that pay attention to warnings and follow the laws. Visitors, as well as citizens, have the right to a fair trial and representation, when found to be in violation of laws and detained for suspected major crimes, including failure to immediately pay fines for minor crimes. Embassy and consulate personnel that can represent visitors and resident aliens detained will be sought out by the authorities. There is no death penalty, but steep penalties exist on the books for serial killers, and predators of the weak and children. There is some organized crime, in a few of the major cities, but it has been cut down in recent years by Pine Park.

Pine Park is the Major Criminal Investigations Division of the National Gendarmes of the Confederacy, named for the complex that is their headquarters in the same titled suburb of Telleursville, the capital. The current Commissioner is Jean-Pierre Etangel. Pine Park inspectors and agents are some of the top investigators and operators in the region. Besides combating major crime including vicious assaults, large scale financial scams and racketeering, they are tasked with counter-terrorism and counter-intelligence operations within the Confederacy. Foreign visitors may find themselves under observation at times by plainclothes agents, or pulled in for a friendly round of questioning when participating in suspicious or questionable activities.

5. Florae and Faunae. Importing of foreign flora and fauna is tightly controlled and animals are quarantined before being let in to the Confederacy. The delicate ecology is under protection and constant watch. Likewise, certain plants and species are restricted from being removed from the Confederacy, so it is best to check before committing such actions.

Multimedia in the Confederacy

Watching television in Neu Engollon is quite easy, and reception in most parts is quite good and clear, except for some mountainous areas in the east, and along the border areas near Austrakia and other neighbors. Broadcast overlap and bandwidth coordination is much better with their neighbors to the north and west, such as Terre Des Gaules, plus the mountain interference is dealt with by cable subscription at discounted rates. Most of the rest of the nation seems to eschew cable due to the good quality of the regular network programming and clarity of HD reception, cable is just not necessary in most areas and the extra channels are not generally desired. Some citizens and residents do have some type of dish or cable system in any case, to pick up a favorite foreign channel or extra sports offerings, plus the plethora of movie, history and arts options that can be found through the federal cable/dish companies. Basic network programming is dominated by NETV, the partially nationally funded super network group. NETV controls the 'beginning of the dial', but there are plenty of other independent networks in the 1-40 channel range. Within the last few years, NETV made a multi-billion dollar deal to air Riysian syndicated programming on their network channels, licensed from the Kaftan Media Group, which also runs its own licensed channel on Neu Engollian networks airing some of the same programming licensed to NETV, as well as additional exclusive programming only able to be viewed on KMG. Similarly, another partnership exists with Gandoor Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

Citizens and visitors to the Confederacy can tune in to these channels courtesy of most cable, satellite and streaming services (some selections and channel positions may vary between providers):

  • NETV 1 Confederacie (Government Channel; Frandit with English subtitles) This channel shows proceedings in the Federal Assembly and open Federal Council sessions. They also show public addresses from the President and any other relevant Government business. Government budgets can be reviewed interactively, sans certain military expenditures.

  • NETV 2 [size=150]Primaru (Primetime channel; Mainly English) Yep, this one shows all the primetime programming in the evening, with talk shows and variety during the day. Overnight programming is a mix of informercials and re-broadcasts from the previous day.

  • NETV 3 Cine (Movie Channel; Mixed Language) Thousands of licensed movies, both domestic and foreign are programmed. Some special late night programming and mini-serials. Classic movies during overnight, automated programming.

  • NETV 4 Novtar (News Channel; Mainly English) All news, all the time. Some weather related specials and historical documentaries during daytime programming.

  • NETV 5 Vogwer (Travel Channel; Mixed Language) Programming for travel both domestically, regionally and Internationally that features landmarks, popular sites, customs, travel preparation and interactive bits that allow access to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NETA (Neu Engollon Travel Authority) and various foreign visa application sites. Also some cooking shows are featured focusing on cuisine from different cantons and regions.

  • NETV 6 Primaru (Primetime secondary; More Frandit featured than NETV 2) Daytime programming dominated by soaps and night with mini-serials. Some other domestic dramatic series programming.

  • NETV 7 Espora (Sports Channel; Mainly English) Dominated by rugby, the number one national sport, but plenty of other sports get air time, such as hockey, association football, biathlon, tennis and track and Olympic events.

  • NETV 8 Vilarna (Lifestyles Channel; Mixed Language) (Home, garden, cooking) Various shows about home improvement, tips, more cooking shows, real estate, landscaping, etc.

  • NETV 9 Altavilarna (Alternative Lifestyles Channel; Mainly English) LGBT to subculture, non-mainstream music and beyond, a variety of different shows revolving around those that don't live in the mainstream or are not always accepted into common society.

  • NETV 10 Kindfil (Kid's network; Mainly English) Children's programming, with more mature animation late night. Both live action and animation shows are featured.

  • MILKOM 11 (Military Channel; Mixed Language) Not NETV affiliated, but shows some NETV produced historical documentaries and carries a lot of NETV licensed programming.

  • VIDMK 12 (Music/Video Channel; Mainly English) Also called Vidmark. Much like what the old MTV channel was like. No shlock reality shows. Just all music videos, concert specials and a variety of musical genres represented with both domestic and foreign artists. Also not an NETV affiliate.

  • NETV 13 Finanzu (Finance Channel; Mainly English) Business reports. Constant stock market updates. Business and economic oriented shows and shorts. Late night informercials

  • BSN 14 (Home Shopping Channel; Mainly English) A BDI owned network, this channel markets and sells a wide variety of home and even some odd commercial goods through live host spots and informercials.

  • GNT 15 (Gaulic National Programming; Gaulic French with subtitles) A Gaulic government sponsored channel that features a variety from GNT, with sports, news, culture and popular shows from the neighboring nation to Neu Engollon's West.

  • NETV 19 Espora (Secondary sports channel; Mixed language) More alternative and non-traditional sports are featured on this channel, such as those that are considered 'Extreme' or adventurous. Also, highlights, replays and player profiles of national teams involved in International sports tournaments are shown, as well as other additional coverage. The Alpen Valley Rugby Union season is also covered more in depth.

  • NETV 20 (Arts channel; Mainly Frandit) Lots of art across all perspectives are featured, from traditional to performance to the galleries and locations that they reside in. Much like a travel channel with a focus for art enthusiasts.

    Image

  • KMG 21 (Kaftan Media Group; Cultural & Entertainment channel; Mainly Riysian with subtitles) Lots of syndicated children's shows, primetime, movies and live news and sports casts from Riysa in Astyria.

    Image

  • GBC-NE 22 (Gandoor Broadcasting Corporation; Cultural & Entertainment channel; Mainly English) Variety programming with a focus on Gandoorese culture. A partnership channel with NETV.

  • CHN 28 (Christ Hallelujah Network; Mainly English) A very religious programmed channel that is funded through a coalition of churches, mostly in the Burgunden and Geneve areas. Neu Engollon is a mostly secular nation and overtly spiritual references are avoided in society, but some evangelical churches tend to have the money to overcome some of this secular bias in the Confederacy. The recent evangelical movement in Glisandia has also created both a parallel, albeit much smaller, movement in the Confederacy, as well as a backlash. NETV and the government have been in talks to further restrict religious programming.

  • TBC 29 (Trellinese National Programming; Trellinese with subtitles) A Trellinese government sponsored channel that features a variety from TBC, with sports, news, culture and popular shows from the somewhat reclusive nation at the southern basin of the Sea of Jajich in Astyria. A fascinating perspective into the nation that had formerly been closed off from the international community for decades.

Road and Rail

Postby Neu Engollon » Sat Dec 26, 2015 1:42 am

Major highways and freeways cover the bulk of Neu Engollon. Also sometimes called the Autobahn System, there are two overlapping layers of routes/roads in the Confederacy. The first is the Federal Route system, maintained by the Federal Government, the second is the Cantonal Route system, maintained out of individual canton budgets. Considering the relatively long streak of prosperity, to the average traveler, the CR and FR system are virtually indistinguishable in quality, flow, number of lanes and maintenance. Taxes maintain the system, and the only tolls to be found are around the five major metropolitan areas of Genève, Burgunden, Panoli-Nice-San Remo, Schwartzgarten and Albertville during peak rush hour times to discourage congestion. Below is a map of the FR and CR system and the cantons they run through.

The rail system in the Confederacy is run by AlpenRail, an affiliate of Madurail, the continental system interlinking most of the nations in Madurin. There are some minimal border check points for rail stops, but possession of a Madurail pass, which a passport is needed to acquire, ensures that they are brief halts in the rail journey. Disembarking the train in Semnoz is not allowed, except for those with authorized security documentation. Semnoz is a highly sensitive, classified Governmental/NEDF area. As well as the highway system, Alpenrail has the least amount of coverage in the extremely mountainous Central Eastern part of the Confederacy.
