Allanean Arms Icarus Driverless Bus

As Allanean Arms continues to struggle for its top spot as the largest exporter of vehicles and weaponry in Allanea, part of this struggle has been to introduce not only new models of vehicles, but also to open itself to entirely new types of products. For example, though Allanean Arms had rarely produced mass-transit vehicles before, its new offering for the world is the Icarus-series driverless bus.

The Icarus bus combines several novel technologies.

[b]DRIVERLESS: The primary technological advantage deployed within the Icarus bus is, obviously, the lack of a driver. The Icarus bus propels itself along a pre-programmed route, picks up passengers at stations, and stops at stations (based on passengers pressing a STOP button, quite similarly to that function on regular buses). This allows the bus to be operated 24/7 without any expenses on driver salaries, with pauses needed only to recharge the onboard battery and to maintain the bus. Naturally, this is much safer than a driver-operated bus.

EMISSION-FREE: The bus operates using an electric battery, which is recharged by induction at the bus terminal (the charging takes up to 60 minutes for a full charge using a 300KW charging input). While of course greenhouse gas emissions are still generated at the power plant where the electricity is produced, the bus itself is emission-free, allowing the user to reduce air pollution in the cities where the buses are deployed. (And if you use atomic power, you can of course be proudly emission free through the entire use-cycle of the bus!)

WI-FI AND USB: The bus is equipped both with a wi-fi router (allowing for high-speed Internet access for the passengers’ devices) and USB plugs (one per seat), allowing users to charge their own devices while using the bus.

AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING: The Icarus driverless bus is fully climate-controlled, allowing for an air temperature ranging from 16-20 degrees Celsius at all times (typically 16-17 degrees in the summer and 20 degrees in the winter.)

SAVINGS: Over a 12-year life-cycle, the electric bus is expected to save its operator about $600,000 in fuel costs and $135,000 in maintenance costs - greater efficiency, less moving parts, and energy-efficienciesf the equivalent of 21 miles per gallon (the average diesel bus does 3 miles per gallon!) mean savings for you and your passengers.

Max speed: 80 k/h
Range: 200 km between chargings
Capacity: 52 passengers seated, 10 standing, 2 wheelchair positions
Length: 18.6 meters
Width: 2.6 meters
Height: 3.1 meters
Weight: 20.6 meters
Price: $800,000
DPR: 1 billion

ALLANEAN ARMS' ICARUS CONSIDERED IN PILOT-FREE PILOT SCHEME

THE ARRONDUGOZONÉ Auctorilast sa Petrévelia [English editor's note: the local authority which governs the town of Petrévelia] has announced a radical pilot scheme which aims to shake up their public transport network.

The local authority is seeking two bidders for consideration to deliver a new generation of buses to the town, with one unusual requirement - the buses involved in the scheme should require no drivers whatsoever.

Relorian streets are not strangers to driver-less vehicles, and Relorian technology firms - and indeed, the government - have been funding their development prolifically.

But this is the first time a local authority has sought to replace their own bus drivers with 'smart vehicles'.

Councillor Serené Lovani, leader of the Aggrondugozoné Auctorilast in Petrévelia, said that it was the "logical next step" for the town to remain "future-proof".

"We are a forward-thinking town with great budgetary pressures," Lonavi said. "We have an obligation to the people of Petrévelia to ensure they are receiving the best value for money and the best service. Public transportation is important to the local economy, and represents one of our largest areas of investment.

"We have to be smart about how we deliver it."

Requirements for the contract include vehicles that use tried-and-tested driver-less technology, that are environmentally-friendly both to produce and to operate, and that they can carry a minimum of 45 passengers with appropriate safety equipment.

It is understood that two companies are under consideration for the contract at present.

Relorian firm RMT, the current contract holder, is offering hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with new, and untested, driver-less technology.

But the local authority is also considering a new entrant from Allanean firm Allanean Arms - the 'Icarus Driverless Bus'.

"We are required by law to tender contracts to native companies," Lonavi said. "But we must also consider imported vehicles."

It is understood that the local authority is leaning towards the Allanean Arms design due to the poor hydrogen infrastructure in eastern Reloria at present.

Powered by batteries, the Icarus could be charged at any dedicated charging station, which would be cheaper to set up, if less convenient, than the hydrogen-fuelled equivalent by RMT.

And as Reloria's power grid no longer relies upon polluting fuels, this makes the Icarus essentially emission-free, as well as driver-free.

The sophisticated vehicle can also be stopped on request by passengers, and features amenities such as WiFi access and USB charging ports for phones and tablets. These features are understood to be unavailable on the RMT offering.

However, the local bus drivers union has been critical of the pilot.

"Should this take off, what happens to the drivers currently employed by the [local authority]?" asked union leader, Merris Treval. "Are we to be unemployed, replaced by robots?"

The local authority was quick to reassure by pointing out that, if the pilot is successful, drivers will be replaced gradually as organic staff turnover reduces their number.

"There are around 2,000 bus drivers employed by this [council]," Lonavi said. "We shall not be making people redundant en mass - we shall simply replace drivers as and when they leave our employ.

"This is a long-term project, and we need to thoroughly test the concept for safety and efficiency before we do anything else."

For now, citizens of Petrévelia should be prepared to see the uniquely-styled vehicle on their streets soon - the local authority's transit department has placed an order for 200 Icarus buses for consideration in the pilot scheme.

Official Message from Bruce Hunter, CEO, Allanean Arms Mass Transit Division:

My dear friends!

I am happy to see the first foreign order for the Icarus. I’m happy to inform you that with an order of this size, Allanean Arms will provide all requisite training and instruction for your personnel gratis. Furthermore, I will personally arrive in Reloria to oversee the arrival of the first buses, and will happily participate in the usual festivities/ribbon-cutting ceremonies. I believe that this is the beginning of a new commercial relationship between Allanean Arms and the Relorian consumer and will pay this the attention that this momentous event is frankly due.

Sincerely yours,
Bruce

Dear Mister Hunter,

Many thanks for your correspondence. We thank you for your generosity in this order, and appreciate much your aid for providing the training to operate your product. We are excited to see how it does perform in live trials. I anticipate welcoming you personally to our fair town and hope that we can do business together moving forward.

The Icarus model was selected for this trial for many reasons and we are pleased that Allanean Arms is accommodating in this manner. I do ask if the pilot programme we run is a success and more orders are placed, is there scope for alterations to the design to meet our needs more specifically? Of course this is only if the programme highlights issues that need such alterations.

Sincerely,

Serené Lovani

Official Reply from Allanean Arms:

We are highly satisfied and impressed with this order. We feel that it would be a good idea for us to send training personnel and programmers to Kahanistan to assist you with accepting the first driverless buses into service. We hope that you are patient with us as we seek out and rent facilities for producing such a vast quantity of buses. The first buses shall begin to arrive within the month, in a first shipment of 100 buses. The shipments will then rapidly expand and accelerate.

New Masada Area Rapid Transit Authority

That would be acceptable. There is not the funding in the RTA budget for us to retain sufficient technical staff to maintain the buses. We will however give the soon to be ex drivers priority for training into technical positions with higher wages to retain the loyalty of our valued employees. If they were to be angered by their impending job loss, we would lack the security budget to deter a widespread campaign of vandalism against the driverless buses.

We believe that there are production facilities in Kahanistan that would collect rent from Allanean Arms to produce thousands per month until the order is complete, by when we should have the industrial and technical base from which to begin domestic production if our projection figures are accurate and the order is completed in seven years and our research and development groups remain on schedule.

Signed,
Dr. Mordechai Horowitz,
Financial Administrator, N.M.A.R.T.A.

RE: Icarus Driverless Bus

To whom it may concern,

We hope this message reaches you well, and standing undaunted in all honour. We have taken note of the services offered by you in the form of the 'Icarus' driverless bus. We further note that this has the potential to, in Lyran service, release from internal driving duty over 140 million transport arm personnel, who currently drive buses and trucks, outside combat and within Lyras, as part of the logistics and mobility requirements of sustaining the Protectorate's unusually large combatant forces. Being able to dramatically reduce the amount of personnel required to maintain the viability of Lyran military strength translates, quite directly, into an enhanced capacity for combat effectiveness, and to that end, the Protectorate is interested in securing DPRs to these vehicles and, in parallel to that, authority to utilise the software that undergirds the system to produce similar vehicles to service the Protectorate's broader logistics requirements.

A technical question alongside the earlier financial question. Is there any reason that Allanean Arms has to believe that the existing circuitry could not be modified to match Lyras' established standard practice of using Indium-Gallium-Arsenide as the basis of electrical systems? It would be highly advantageous in the protection of the support infrastructure to ensure that a nuclear exchange would not have the effect of bringing Lyras to a grinding halt.

Please get back to us as soon as you are able.

Official Reply from Allanean Arms

We will be happy to assist our Lyran friends in upgrading their mass transit system. We would also be happy to assist in developing programming for a simple conversion kit for existing trucks and buses for driverless use, similar to what is already used in the Free Kingdom Armed Forces and around the world, broadly similar to the Terramax conversion systems pioneered by Oshkosh and other companies.
