Background:

For a long while, the Allanean Armed Forces utilized variants of the Lyran Arms LY300 Manticore MLRS system. This system has been used by Allaneans in the Second Freemen’s Crusade, the Spirean-Nefreedian conflict, as well as the Taros Islands conflict. The Allaneans have always been satisfied by the firepower of the LY300, and its ability to be modified in the field to fire 220mm rockets, anti-ship missiles and even long-range cruise missiles by simply lifting out one rocket pod and fitting in another. Allanean Arms, Inc. had even developed and supplied the armed forces with a long-range ATGM to be fired from the 220mm rocket pod - the Mercury multipurpose missile.

Still, the Manticore had one powerful disadvantage. It used a tank chassis. The chassis was extremely heavy - the vehicle weighing more than seventy-two tons loaded, twenty-two tons more than the main-battle tank in current use by the Free Kingdom Armed Forces, the T-95, and fifty-two tons heavier than the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. Moreover, the Manticore required the same maintenance cycle as a tank - its weekly maintenance cycle required the crew to spent eight hours or more to maintain, leaving them drained and inflicting various health damage, such as stress fractures and torn muscles.

To reduce the maintenance cycle on the vehicle, Allanean Arms proposed the use of its MAF-625 truck body - a heavy tank transporter truck produced at the Minograd Automotive Factory - to carry the extremely heavy rocket LY4072 LRM pods. The first prototypes faced some difficulty - the LRM pods were either posed too far back, causing the vehicle to fishtail in tight turns, or too high, causing it to flip over due to a high set center of gravity - but eventually, Allanean Arms decided to create a chassis where the base of the launcher was weighed down somewhat (by means of making a hardier launcher base), which made the vehicle more stable, finally giving the world the AA-30 Whirlwind.

Armament and Ammunition:

As mentioned above, the AA-30 Whirlwind utilizes the LY4072 rocket pods. Just like any other system using the LY4072, the WHirlwind is reloaded by having the two LY4072 pods lifted into place using a 12-ton-capacity crane/reloading vehicle (also utilizing the MAF-525 chassis). This use of the LY4072 rocket pods in their various modifications allows users to utilize both the MLRS rockets and long-range missiles that are available for the Lyran Arms systems using these missiles.

Crew Comfort Systems: The vehicle is equipped with the crew comfort systems common to civilian trucks - an air conditioner, a media entertainment system, and a small food fridge. It is also NBC proof.

Further, can you describe the maintenance vehicle in greater detail as we are still seeking information at a time when our artillery systems are due for their triannual upgrade.

Only the LV actually has the capacity to launch missiles. The TL carries missiles for loading on the LV.

The training vehicle carries a mock-up of the missile-carrying body, that can be weighted down to simulate driving a loaded or unloaded missile carrier, and exists to train drivers.

The maintenance vehicle carries various tools pertinent to serious repair of the Whirlwind system that can't be carried out by the crew proper using onboard tools. Hypothetically this vehicle can be replaced by an ordinary sufficiently heavy truck equipped with a crane.

The Canadian Prairies, like their American cousins to the south, had beckoned to opportunity. Long before there was a New Dornalia, settlers from all lands--Ukrainians, Germans, Italians, Scotsmen, Irishmen and Jews--had come to the Dominion of Canada to seek a new life. They worked the soil, peddled goods, and raised children, building homes, schools, and other necessities of life. And when it came time to play their roles--either in self-defense or to answer the call to duty sounded by the Commonwealth--the Canadians fought. And fighting men need places to train.

So it is we come to the Suffield Testing Complex. For many years, it had served the people of Canada and the United Kingdom as a place where the fine art of armored warfare could practiced in decent weather and with plenty of space. The Atomic Apocalypse had seen Suffield fall into disuse, only to be revived as a training facility for the Dornalian people. When there wasn't enough room at Fort Irwin, Armored Cavalry crews trained at Suffield. Tankers rediscovering the lost art of armored warfare came to Suffield. And the list goes on.

And so it was now, that a tank rode over the plains. But this wasn't the usual sort. Not like the small Wellingtons that leapt from the pages of a comic book, or even the odd hobbyist with a tank.

No, it was a monster.

A 32 meter gun forward monster. It roared, its treads rumbling as it dug into the rich earth. It was brobdingnagian in proportions, and the native wildlife fled from it perhaps recognizing it as the apex predator it was. As it crested the low ridge, the tank looked as if it arose from a heavy metal album cover.

The fact that a loud guitar track was blaring from speakers attached to it certainly helped, along with lyrics about resisting authority and frustration.

It rumbled and rumbled, churning up the earth like an angry god, awoken by the sins of mankind, out for blood. Then, it stopped, and then it turned its giant turret to face a fleet of Leman Russes. The tank stopped silent for a moment. It tracked the Lemans slowly, subtly. To the outside observer, it would look like the Lemans were too far away to easily track. The Lemans themselves were near the edge of the Testing Complex’s battleground, and one would think that the MT-based tank wouldn’t be able to hit them.

Then, the mighty cannons roared, sending their massive shells way down range.

For a moment, not much happened. Then, several massive dust clouds could be seen, and the concussive force of the blasts rocked the Canadian Prairies.

And inside the tank, a young woman dressed as Patton, could be hooting and hollering, as if she had scored a big win.

“WHOOP WHOOP!” shouted Gracie. “I HAVE SUCH AN ERECTION RIGHT NOW!”

The rest of the tank crew turned towards her, and she sheepishly added, “Metaphorically speaking, of course. Damn.” Muttering “fuckin’ pervs” under her breath, she then pulled out the cell phone she had in her pocket, with the custom black case and gold lightning bolt symbol surrounded by the letters T, C, and B and made a call.

“Hey. Did you see that shit? I mean, boom! Yeah, I know you could see it from a long way up--what--I can’t hear you--wait, you’re in a Raptor. And you see the--well. Those are big craters. How big--well. That big, eh? Fuck me, I guess I had a bit too much fun. Anyway. I gotta go, these guys want their tank back. Bye.”

Gracie put down the phone and breathed a sigh of pure joy, before going, “Thanks, gents. Now if you excuse me, I’ve gotta make some phone calls. Bye!”

Crawling out of the tank, she then sat down on it and then made a call to Allanean Arms.

“Hi, Allanean Arms? Gracie Kurimitsu here, from Dornieland. It’s me again. Anyway, I noticed you gents had missile launchers for sale--the Whirlwinds, was it? Well, considering we’re tooling up to gently caress some Ralkovians to death, we need the best gear possible.”

Noticing the tank move, she then added, “Don’t mind the background noise, that’s just a T-3500 being tested. It’s fucking awesome. Quote me on this. Anyway, we’d like production rights to the Whirlwind, and fifty units for testing. Fifty times three million, plus production rights...I’d say that’d be $3,150,000,000 US dollars. I’m wiring the funds to you right now. They’re from a secure Hajarran bank account. Any questions?”
