Rebellious Citadel

"M.A.A.P.S. (Mobile Airborne All Purpose Structures), are large airships that perform a variety of roles in the Congreveopian military. They are mainly used for logistics, acting as cargo transports, and large mobile installations. The program has a controversial history..." - Official Factbook Entry

There are two MAAPS involved in this operation. Vindication (MAAPS 09), and Overwhelming Silence (MAAPS 15). Vindication is a standard MAAPS, in so much as a vessel in a fleet of unique vessels can be standard. It is slightly larger than an average MAAPS, slightly slower, and is currently configured mainly for transport of military equipment, with a secondary role of Command and Control. It has been boarded and captured by an unidentified hostile force. Overwhelming Silence is designed to be a stealthy MAAPS, and was quickly pulled off testing for this mission. It is substantially smaller than most other MAAPS. It is configured for light running, with a secondary role of systems diagnostics. Most of its weapons are unloaded, or not even installed. It will not last five minutes in a head-to-head fight with Vindication.

This is a map of the standard interior layout of the upper deck (the permanent portion) of a MAAPS:

On the inside, MAAPS appear similar to naval vessels, although the design is actually much lighter. If you have any questions about how the interior is laid out (the map fails to prove much detail on corridors and such), or other aspects of what the MAAPS is like inside, feel free to ask me on the OOC thread, and I will be happy to fill you in.

Undisclosed location over the ocean, 0132 hours:

The inside of the aircraft briefly shone with white light as a spear of lightning sliced down through the clouds, its peal of thunder vanishing into the roar of the storm’s wind and the V-22’s engines.

“Overwhelming Silence, this is Manta One.” said the pilot “Requesting permission to land.”

“Granted, Manta One.” said the radio. “Illuminating the approach.”

“Manta One sees seven of eight guide beacons.” said Nexus “Pilot, clear me to begin the approach.”

“Nexus, you are cleared to go approach through securing.” said the pilot. “Bring us in.”

Inside the V-22, Leighton felt the turbulence of the storm melt away as Nexus took full control of the aircraft. Under his careful watch, the aircraft dipped and rolled in perfect opposition to the dancing pockets of air pressure, steady as a pillar of rock in the midst of the tossing wind.

This would, of course, take its toll on the airframe.

The mission objective was worth far more than a couple years off the service life of two V-tols, though, and as another bolt of lightning shot down to the sea Leighton glimpsed the behemoth ahead of them. Overwhelming Silence was the second smallest MAAPS to date, and it still dwarfed their aircraft, or, for that matter, it dwarfed most buildings. Its envelope rippled in the wind as water cascaded off the smooth ellipse of the airship, then the light faded and it vanished back into the dark clouds.

They were less than a hundred meters out now, and Leighton leaned back and closed his eyes. He’d conquered whatever fear of heights and flying he might have back when he first trained to work the hangar bay aboard Fortress, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t a bit anxious when he was in an aircraft performing a mid air docking in a storm, among other reasons for anxiety. The entire Congreveopian squad had been a bit visibly on edge through the flight, actually, talking occasionally about the mission, but almost never chatting as they usually did.

Nexus, unchangingly calm as ever, gently landed Manta One in the cargo bay, then Manta Two a few seconds later. Crewmembers dashed forwards and secured the V-22s in the dim blue stealth lighting of the open bay. Behind them, the landing bay doors rotated closed with the sound of heavy hydraulic bolts sliding into place, then the lights came up as the bay crew, soaking wet from the torrents of rain that must have blown in, began inspecting their work and checking they hadn’t missed anything.

“You can go ahead and disembark now.” said the pilot, opening the rear ramp. Leighton unfastened his seatbelt and disembarked, followed by the rest of the troops aboard. As Leighton stepped onto the metal floor of the bay, a door in the wall opened and a large humanoid robot walked out, mostly composed of black metal and lacking any distinctive face on its continuously-rotating head. Leighton had seen these before, but not often. Most high-ranking officers prefered Nexus’s diplomatic avatars for their much friendlier design. The military aide avatar was really only seen on the flagships of Congreveopia’s fleets at sea and, more recently, the latest MAAPS.

“Hello. I am Nexus.” said the robot, stopping in front of the assembled soldiers from the V-22s and turning towards them “I will be briefing you on your mission as the Captain is busy tending to the hunt for our prey. If you will follow me.”

Nexus led the group to the Mess at the rear of the ship, where a picture of Vindication was displayed on the projector. He then waited for everyone to finish finding seats or places to stand and addressed the group.

“Several hours ago, a concerted effort was made by unknown forces to jam the communications of the Congreveopian MAAPS named 'Vindication', and that of its surrounding base.” said Nexus “This was shortly following a feigned attack on the base that, in accordance with new protocols published after the loss of Benevolence, induced the MAAPS to make an emergency takeoff from the base with the majority of its personnel groundside. Immediately following the jamming, one or more groups of hostile forces aboard the MAAPS proceeded to commandeer the airship. For national security reasons, the exact means by which they did this will not be released, but what analysis can be made of the limited reports indicates between twenty and forty attackers, and almost certainly not upwards of fifty.”

“So this is where we come in.” said Nexus as the image on the board switched to the flightpath of Vindication following its capture “Command is reluctant to order the termination of the MAAPS, given that the fleet is already stretched thin with the loss of Benevolence, and it appears that our enemy is willing to oblige us, to a certain degree. They are holding the crew, mostly technical personnel and not soldiers, in the cargo bay and demanding that we allow them into Congreveopian airspace or they will kill everyone. Given the damage that a fully combat-operational MAAPS could do to any of our coastal cities, the air force has been placed on alert and will destroy Vindication if it approaches the coast.”

“To approach the coast, though, they will have to go through us.” said Nexus as the map zoomed in on the storm system they were currently in “The hostile force moved Vindication into this storm system to prevent our reconnaissance satellites tracking them, and, since then, we have diverted a large portion of our entire satellite network to watching the storm’s perimeter to ensure they don’t slip out unnoticed. Fortunately, in addition to vastly complicating our efforts to track the MAAPS, this storm serves to limit their pace as well as provide good cover for our approach.”

“As you may or may not know,” continued Nexus “Overwhelming Silence is designed to be a stealth MAAPS. I would have an accompanying picture for this, but, believe it or not, exterior photos of this thing are actually classified. Anyways, we pulled it off its final sky trails to intercept Vindication and facilitate your operation to board and retake it. Overwhelming Silence does not have its full weapons package yet, nor do most of the weapons it has currently have ammo. Furthermore, even if they did, we would still be significantly outgunned by Vindication, and as such we will not be engaging in a level confrontation with them. If all else fails, that’s Cloistered Guardian’s job. What we will be doing is finding Vindication and deploying you to board it, then supporting your extraction once you retake control of the airship.”

The image behind Nexus switched to a map of Vindication’s interior as he continued his briefing.

“Now, a couple details before the actual mission plan.” said Nexus “We believe they may attempt to jam communications again. You are all welcome to use your own comms, of course, but we will also be providing all of you with a Congreveopian earpiece and accompanying black rectangle, just in case. They’re in those boxes over there. The earpiece goes in your ear. The black rectangle goes in your pocket, backpack, under your toupee, wherever. Just keep it within two meters of the earpiece. I’ll be managing who’s talking to whom over those, and you’ll hear exactly as much chatter as you need to and nothing more. The entire system is waterproof, has six hours of battery life, is rated for temperatures from Antarctica to Death Valley, etcetera. Needless to say that Leighton’s team is exempt from this. I already own their comms.”

“Secondly, do not underestimate how the MAAPS itself will dynamically alter the combat environment.” said Nexus “Once they realize they are being boarded, the bridge will lock all the doors, and you won’t get through most of them without explosives. That’s why one of the first things to do will be give control of the MAAPS back to me, which is hopefully as easy as turning a bunch of computers back on. I’m hard to wipe from systems.”

“Thirdly, I… wait one.” said Nexus, turning away from the assembled soldiers.

“New information from the bridge.” said Nexus “We’ve spotted Vindication several miles to windward of here. They probably haven’t spotted us yet, but we need to move now. Grab your earpieces and black rectangles and report back to your V-TOLs. I’ll give an abbreviated version of the rest of the briefing over the earpieces while you’re in flight.”

Agent Jones signaled to the others to wait.
"Nexus? Activate Contingency Zeta Delta 993. Gamma Alpha 999 is the key code."
He tapped a button inside his suit jacket - his bulletproof suit jacket. Style can be safe you know.
Meanwhile
Wheatley activated a comm link, under the id of Contingency Zeta Delta 993. He made a message that would autosend to Nexus on connection, providing confirmation.
"Good day old chum. Not-So-Resident virus expert Wheatley here. Need any assistance?"
More Meanwhile, in the newly constructed Valhalla Airship Docks
Head Constructor Aldman observed the first GAmeTopian MAAPS begin official construction.
"This is gonna be awesome, sir!" His assistant, Robert Manton exclaimed.
"Indeed. What is the status of our contract with Congreveopia?"
"Very good. The final draft will be sent to them soon. Meanwhile, Parliament gave us just the permission to begin the framework, as you know."
"All right."
There the first GAmeTopian airship was born - MAAPS-G1. Negligent Oversight.
Meanwhile before the meanwhiles
The four members of Squad Romeo dashed to grab their earpieces and rectangles, equipping them quickly. They shouldered their carbines, and completed a quick inventory.
"Drone equipment?" Agent Jones called out.
"Check." Specialist Roman confirmed. He tapped a case that contained a few small aerial and ground cam drones - three of each, to be precise - along with a drone controller.
"Explosive Kit?"
"Check." Specialist Alfa gestured to his pack, which contained two pounds of C4, 25 feet of detonator cord, 16 fluid ounces of nitroglycerin, 6 shaped charges, and 10 individual frequency detonators, along with a drill for the insertion of nitroglycerin if needed. Specially packed for breach missions.
"Standard equipment?" The three armored soldiers nodded. Ballistic armor, carbines, combat handguns, MREs, and each had grabbed three flash bangs for this mission. Agent Jones wore a bulletproof suit, specially modified to be both light and protective. Serving as Command's connection with Romeo, he protected himself with a number of hidden weapons on his person. That finished, they headed toward the VTOL, prepared for duty.

The four present members of SPECTRA moved without hesitation, all quickly grabbed the earpieces and black boxes before slipping their helmets on and exiting the room, making their way back to the VTOL.

After a few moments the squad's eldest spoke, "It's a shame we didn't bring cameras. High-com might've actually been grateful for once."

Lt. Winters responded in kind, "Betraying the trust of another country while onboard one of their most expensive assets, surrounded allies of said country wouldn't be a good idea. So for everyone's sake I suggest you keep ideas like that to yourself, Smith." It was clear Winters was not in the best of moods, but why this was, was unknown to the rest of the squad.

Adrian Nodded, "Affirmative, Sir. I'll keep to myself." Winters simply nodded in reply.

The squad eventually entered the airborne command center's cargo-bay, the same in which they entered. It was then that Durand spoke, "I'm not the only one who found it... Odd, that they had a robot brief us? Right?"

Kowalski, in his own fashion, made short reply, "A bit, found it more disturbing though."

Winter's reply was more elaborate, "It's a risk on their part for sure, robots like that could get hacked with the right know how. But it's their military, if they wanna risk multiple lives so their officers can get some free time, I have no problem with that."

The squad became quiet as they strode back up the V-22's ramp and into it's hold before sitting down. Adrian began reciting something in Latin, most likely a prayer, while the rest of the squad remained silent.

"Grab me a box if you can. I'll get your team comms up and power on the drones,"Nickel said, currently handling his gear and turning on the squad-ride power source.
"Do my laundry aswell. It should be in there,"Phoenix joked, picking up the second box that he had touched. He pried the pieces out and gave them to the un-acknowledging Nickel. After they had their comm systems the team got back in order and started taking small steps in their dark brown coffee bean colored boots.

The corporal and medic Phoenix started adjusting his armor first but most carefully. It was a really lightweight combat suit, padding reinforced points such as the lower leg and upper arms. Their jumpsuit also had a upper body protector, hard padding with a soft inner row for comfortable movements and dodging mechanics. His hand moved up too his left arm and pulled up it all the way until another pad an inch from his elbow. He pulled out a magazine for his MP433 and attached it too a Velcro hanger adjusted into the pad. He grabbed hold of the phoenix patch on his upper arm and pulled the vest down to his arm. He was fine for now.

"So? Ever been on an airship?"Liberty asked, wondering about the rookies experiences other than combat. Phoenix could see what she was intending. "In my civilian life,no. In combat life, not really. We shot a small one down in our flight training for special forces, just like the others. Havent stepped a foot on it other than today." Phoenix started handling his handgun and loading it up with a mag. He made sure it was on safety. He then moved down to his belt and firmly set his grenade in next to the pistol holster. There was extra room for two other items or attachments. Liberty brought up something else. She didn't make eye contact with Phoenix when saying it," There was something like this in the thirties. Aircraft carriers that were airships. Failed, one even got caught in a storm and was destroyed."
"Think they are safe?"He asked the question that had been repeated millions of times before. "Probably not...That's the objective. This ship has a sister. Were off to recapture it. I recall a storm on the way aswell."

German happened to be passing by on her way to the V-22, locking in her goggles before coming to a stop. "They what?" She stared at the two, even though she had listened to the brief introduction. "Yeah. They hid it on a storm,"Phoenix turned to her after talking to Liberty. German's response was to say, 'They what' but instead due to her recent subject starter she just gave her cold and disappointed look. She then shook her head but not the bitter look off her face and started walking into her seating.

---------
Nickel was busy setting his drones on sleep and locking them up. Their first large hatch was taken by the brief assault drone and their second had ammo packets, binoculars, and an MRE along with a smaller scout drone, the I-5.

"Hey Nickel. Do you understand the word's GET GOING? We don't need you sorting out your bags. We have a ride to do that,"Saturn, being the second to last to have entered the V-22, alerted Nickel. The operator shot a low nod and continued to make sure his backpack was of a combat appropriate size. He left his weapon cleaning and uniform securing for in drive.

Throughout the flight, 3S had chosen to stay silent, thinking about the information that they had been given beforehand. They looked almost eerie in their black uniforms, covered with cloaks to protect from weather later on. Dark goggles which could be switched for night vision donned their faces, with masks covering their nose to their chins. Looking at them one by one, Theodore couldn't detect any sign of distress in each of them. After all, this was just another mission, despite the obvious fact that it was their first after a long absence from the group. It was time to once more show their worth to the task force.

3S disembarked from the craft in an orderly fashion, then listening to what the robot had to say, then getting their gear together. Velox-2 submachine guns for every member, save for Maria who received her SMAR-1 assault rifle. Once all had been set, Theodore handed out the earpieces and the black boxes. He gave the last set to Roland, taking a moment to speak with him.

"Aerial insertion, your expertise," he began, handing the earpiece first, "you're wearing the strap." Roland smiled from under his mask, and then took the rectangle from Theodore's hand, along with a dark blue armband in the other. "Aye aye, skipper," he replied, wrapping the band around his right shoulder. As soon as everyone had gotten their gear together, they began to board the aircraft once more. "Think these mates can see in the dark?" Sarah joked, to which everyone else sighed. "Obviously they can," Sulthon chided, nudging the woman's helmet, "everyone here is equipped for stealth and night operations."

"Enough with the insults, Sarah," Roland muttered, "we're all here on the same mission. I'd be laughing if one of them has to save your sorry ass." Rolling her eyes as they began taking their seats once more, Sarah grunted. "As if I can't take care of my own on a bloody airship."

Þór Elding sat in the V-22, silently looking at each, waiting patiently until they got to the airship. Once they landed and boarded the ship, the robot, Nexus, began debriefing them on the mission. Midway through the briefing, Nexus informed them they were unexpectedly close to teh target, and had to load up immediately. Proceeding back to the hangar, þór Elding began a final equipment check before boarding the plane. They each tightened the straps on their body armor, and checked their survival kits, knives, ammo, and helmets. Once they checked out, they loaded up onto the V-22 and prepared their minds for the upcoming mission, praying to þór and Óðinn for luck and protection for the challenge ahead.

They loaded their rifles, checked the chambers, and repeated the procedure with their pistols. All of them satisfied they replaced their pistols to their holsters and held their rifles in their laps. They exchanged one final glance with each other before settling into their seats and listening to Nexus continue his briefing.
Cheers mates.

The Mind of Nexus, 0139 hours:

“Hello, Wheatley.” replied Nexus, distractedly “Um… yes, I need your help with something. Hang on, um… okay, yeah. I’m sending you some files.”

Nexus knew he was probably going to end up sharing maps of the MAAPS with the TFA base personnel at least, so he’d taken the time to find the latest models of Vindication and replace all of the confidential parts of it with black cubes. He quickly looked over one of these for the upper deck, noticed he’d censored out the piece of the airship he was sending the GAmeTopian team to hack, added it back in, and sent it to Wheatley.

“Okay, so there’s a complicated machine in the rear of the starboard reconfigurable bay in the model I just sent you.” said Nexus “It’s the one behind four doors, two of which are bulkheads, and it looks like some unholy breed of a radar array and a laser pointer. Anyways, that’s what I’d like your team to go after. It’s a new experimental communications system. So, the plan is that Charles and Kayora go after the computer core, find me still in the systems, turn me on or whatever, then I own the airship again, and clearing out the hostiles is trivial. If that goes wrong, though, the comms system you’re going after is how we do a hostile capture of Vindication’s computers. It’s temporary and experimental, so a lot of the safeguards that would normally prevent hacking through an I/O system will be missing or broken, and it should breach whatever jamming these people might throw up to keep us not-implanted-in-a-human AIs out of this. Your team gets there, turns the system on, aims it at Overwhelming Silence, and then we have a pathway into the computers. I’m going to begin feeding you information on how Vindication’s computers are programmed, begin thinking of creative ways to break in through this thing while I get the operation together. I can answer any questions you have of course. It’s not like I have a lot to deal with after a MAAPS that was previously inflicting order on an unstable region ran away from its base full of Congreveopian citizens. Oh crap, that truck isn’t ours. Hang on.”

Overwhelming Silence, 0141 hours:

Leighton’s team made their way back down to the V-22s with the rest of the squads. In the bay, technicians were checking over the aircraft and disconnecting fueling hoses from them in preparation for their imminent departure. Some of them were also carrying bundles of fabric and rope into the V-22s.

“Huh?” said Leighton as his squad approached their transport “What are those for?”

“What? Oh, right!” said Thomas, startled “Um… I think they’re climbing harnesses?”

“Yeah, Platinum Soldiers standard ones.” replied John “We used them back on that one mission in May of last year, I think? Big city, I rapelled down a skyscraper’s exterior to make a shot into another skyscraper.”

“I remember that.” said Charles with a nervous laugh “You missed and hit her glass of water. Why do we have them here?”

“All shall be revealed in time.” said Nexus through a speaker on the ceiling above them “It’ll be covered in the in-flight briefing if you hurry up and get in your seats.”

Wheatley scanned the data, organizing it casually.
"Hacking the thing should be trivial without you in it on the defensive. 'Tis my specialty, after all."
Then he looked at the model. A combination of sub ores analyzed it carefully.
"Hmm... Nexus, this machine does not appear to work. And how is it operated?"
Meanwhile
Squad Romeo took their seats in the aircraft, ready to roll.
"Your target is a comm room Romeo," Wheatley spoke to them directly through separate comms.
"You'll fight your way there, secure the room, and activate the machinery, allowing Nexus and I complete control of the ship."
Agent Jones nodded.
"How are we inserting though?"
"No clue."

The ride to the ship was bumpy for the three LG Operatives on board the V-22. Perhaps they were used to flying in clear weather and not the storm that was outside now creating bright lightning and loud thunder. They, like the other teams, sat patiently as they listened to the Humanoid Robot explain the situation through the briefing. They paid extra close attention when the rectangles and ear prices were brought up. As Nexus had finished the briefing when the objective was spotted they looked to eachother. "How the hell does a place with this Millitary lose a Blimp?" Broken ask keeping it to himself and the team. "I wouldn't be surprised, Terrorists will do anything these days." Doc replied as he and the other two stood up. "And it's not a blimp, you idiot." He corrected Broken in which he replied with an eye roll.

Blitz collected the ear pieces for the team and the rectangles that accompanied them. He handed them out to Doc and Broken the only two coming on the operation. Queen and Dakka were left at the base as Dakka's role wasn't needed, it being demolition, since a number of teams already seemed to have that. Queen stayed back as she just took up a seat which another team could use. She was peeved at this but eventually she dealt with it. Doc being a Medic and skilled field surgeon remained useful as he also had some knowledge on electronics. Broken stayed as an extra gun. Being skilled in their own form of close quarters combat they could, from what Blitz understood, do well in the confined space of the MAAPS. Being LG Operatives they excelled in stealth operations and Reconnaissance aswell as Assassination and stayed out of wide open engagements and preferring to stay up close and personal using terrain as an advantage against being outnumbered fighting on their back foot.

The three Operatives had put on their earpieces and all placed their rectangles in their right hand pockets fully within the two meters that Nexus had told them about. They followed the other teams down to the V-22's and took their seats waiting for take off and the further briefing they were promised. They prepared themselves again to go back into the storm. They looked around at the other teams then focused their attention back to eachother. "How the hell are we supposed to to get inside it? Nexus made it sound like its practically impregnable." Broken asked as he secured himself to the seat. "They built it, I'm sure they know every way in and out of her." Blitz said as he checked his equipment in the seat one last time. "And if the thing suddenly tumbles out of the sky through some unfortunate circumstance?" Doc chimed in. "Beats me, we make do with what happens. It's what LG does all the time." Blitz replied and Doc sighed at his answer. "Well, plans are never full proof. But if things go haywire... then we'll just have to make something up then." Doc said. Blitz nodded and sat back in his seat relaxing while he could. It would be a long day.

400 km from Vindication
NNS NBC-821 Agamemnon
TFA Field Commander Vladimir and team

"Rain..." Commander John Rhye stared out of the bridge of the Battle Carrier Agamemnon, watching the massive storm front flash past him with great speed, but also grow larger with every passing second that he got closer. "I fucking hate the rain..."

He had it much better than the pilots in front of him, however. That he knew. Out there, the EC-1 Hawk crew and her escorts were braving a massive storm nearly 200 km away from the ship. Even the H-11EC AEWACS helicopter above them was being shaken by strong winds from the storm, and even he could feel the waves slightly bump his ship. It would be a rough week for them if this persisted, and they would still have to stay out there.

"You hate rain? Huh. That's very nice, dear, isn't it?" A woman asked from behind the Captain of the ship, and the captain gritted his teeth, keeping himself from shouting out in utter frustration. He absolutely hated backseat drivers, especially if they were higher ranks than him. "I could politely ask the storm to move, if you want."

"Be nice, Em. You've bugged him for a few days already. After all," Vladimir scolded, "we need him as calm as possible for this."

"Oh, you're no fun." The SS officer known as Em complained, and turned to walk off the bridge, flashing Vladimir an innocent look that just made him roll his eyes again. Before she left, she stopped and looked at the both of them. "Try to stay out of trouble, hmm?" And she left.

The two of them stood in silence on the bridge as they cruised forward at 30 knots, swaying gently to the rock of the sea. It was about ten seconds before Rhye turned to look at Vladimir with a weird look, vaguely remembering a story he had heard before. "Could she really do that?"

"Hmm? Ask the storm to leave?" Vladimir asked, and thought about it for a moment, then shrugged. "Why would she? She already knows you hate rain. Besides, why should it bother you? You're inside the bridge. It's like dry land."

"I know I am. My stomach, however," Rhye said, and patted his stomach, "knows better. That's why he decided to let me see my breakfast a second time today."

"You need to fix that. A captain of a warship shouldn't get sea sick from storms. Breaks concentration. I've got some pi-" Vladimir was interrupted by Rhye, who put his hand up abruptly.

"Shh. I hear something." The Captain reported to the Marshal, who raised an eyebrow, obviously knowing exactly what the man was referring to: the connection to the AEWACS. He paused a moment, then connected his comms system to Command's.

"Captain, report. What've you got?" Rhye ordered, looking out into the distance towards the position where he mildly believed the three aircraft to inhabiting.

"I've picked up some chatter in the area. Passive's given me absolutely nothing so far, and I'd rather not turn on the Active right now," the captain of the carrier based AEWACS replied. It was well known that the EC-1 was a powerful electronics platform, and could intercept quite a few communications at once, each one recorded for future purpose. It's AESA radar, rather powerful as well, could perform a passive search that was very sensitive. It's platform had, in addition, the ability to record most any electronic signature they received, categorize it, and store it for future use. Congreveopian communications had, however, been reported well in advance from past encounters, and the encryption (which was respectfully hard to crack, even for the Namenians) was familiar with them. "Would you like to hear, sir?"

"Go ahead, Captain," The captain replied to the plane, then turned to Vladimir.

"It could just be a normal aircraft," Vladimir pointed out, looking down at the man. He had already guessed Vladimir was on the comms.

"With it's active turned off, and a signature and encryption with the strength of the famed technicians of the Congreveopian military? No, sir," the man said with a smile, "I do not believe that there are many out there that can match that description."

Vladimir was about to say something, but was cut off by the request of a pilot, notably Manta One, requesting permission to land. The reply's encryption was a little more heavy than they knew, and someone guessed they had hit the jackpot.

"Overwhelming Silence..." The captain trailed off with a little admiration. Obviously, he was slightly jealous of any man who could pilot a MAAPS. "We've found her..."

"That was... Rather easy. I don't imagine it would've been THAT easy... Captain, give me a short pulse of the active. Confirm the airship." Vladimir ordered directly to the aircraft, and he waited for a little bit for the reply.

30,000 feet in the air, 200 kilometers out from Agamemnon, the EC-1 plane turned on her powerful AESA radar for only seconds, and the data was quickly uplinked to the command center of the ship. Vladimir looked down on the radar screen and gave a little raise of his eyebrow, obviously interested. "Two aircraft, a MAAPS, and an oddly fast football." He looked at the screen again, and the football disappeared. "Oh. Just three bogies now. Football seems to have disappeared. I imagine we'll want to contact Nexus as soon as possible, it seems. I'd rather not get a surprise when our AEWACS gets lashed with ECM and radar pulses."

"I've found her. Goddamn, I've found her. Bridge! General quarters! All ahead, full sprint! Course three zero zero!" The excited captain exclaimed, smiling wildly. The men on the bridge repeated their instructions and the ship began to lurch as her engines sped up to the sprinting speed of 36 knots. Not much by comparison, but she would definitely get closer. "Vladimir, I trust your team will take to their aircraft?"

"I've already ordered it. Do contact them, will you?" Vladimir said once again before he left the room. "I don't want to be shot down."

"I think I'll have a nice chat with Nexus." The captain said as Vladimir left the bridge and command room, and went to join his team in the armory. "Captain, three fixed wings and two helis will be heading your way. Don't be alarmed by them. Also, could you be a pal and tell Nexus Vladimir said hi?"

"Connection has been established, sir," the pilot in the plane replied.

"Thank you," the Captain returned, and then turned his attention to contacting Nexus. "Greetings, Nexus. This is Captain Howard Rhye of the Battle Carrier NNS NBC-821 Agamemnon. How can we help you?"
The beatings will continue. Regardless of morale.

Overwhelming Silence, Bridge, 0140 hours:

“Captain, I just got something on the passive radar.” said one of the technicians “Automatic pattern recognition picked it out as artificial, but I’m not sure. We’ve been getting false positives ever since entering this storm, but this one looks different.”

“Conclusion?” asked the Captain as she walked over to the technician’s workstation against the wall.

“It’s almost too subtle.” said the technician “Look at how all of these bands have a tiny spike at once. It’s like the source is trying to hide behind equally distributing itself across the spectrum, which screams AESA radar to me. Nature wouldn’t care if it spiked in a couple local bands, and nature wouldn’t use these four bands at all unless we were further north.”

“I agree, Captain.” said Nexus, his avatar returning to its post on the bridge “I’m only 60 percent confident, but I think that’s an AESA radar looking at us.”

“Can it see us?” asked the Captain “Can Vindication see it?”

“Maybe and no.” said the technician “I doubt Vindication has anyone near experienced enough aboard, barring our boys of course, to be able to notice this. Maybe not even if they have experienced people, because they’d need to have the auto pattern recognition software running to see something this subtle. As for us, our hangar is closed, but this is from, um… almost ten minutes ago. Nexus should fix that latency quickly. We can’t fight a battle with ten minutes ago’s intel. Anyways, Manta flight was airborne then, so they’d have been seen regardless of whether we were.”

“Correction, it’s definitely artificial.” said Nexus “I just got word that that’s coming from a Namien ship, or rather one of its aircraft. I’ve given them access to our information, and they shouldn’t be using active scanning on this region in the future.”

“That works.” said the Captain “This is your operation, Nexus. Let me know when you’ve figured out how they factor into the picture.”

The Mind of Nexus, 0140 hours:

“Hello, Captain Rhye.” said Nexus “I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that for once what I’m working on is not classified from you. The entire report on these affairs is open to all TFA nations, and your position of hosting Vladimir, as well as your rank, means you can review it at any time. I can send you a PDF if you’d like. Long story short, though, we are chasing a stolen airship -you know of the MAAPS, right?- through this storm. We’re going to board and reclaim it shortly. If you’re available to assist, that would be fantastic. I was not aware your ship was in these waters. If you could send helicopters to be on-station in the event of our forces requiring to retreat, that would be take a great weight off my mind. Right now, we have two V-22s to fly the mission with, owing to this rather remote location, and damage to either could threaten the mission or the soldiers involved in it. Additional aircraft, especially with medical personnel and maybe a quick response team, would be invaluable.”

Vindication, Bridge, 0141 hours:

“This is Castle to Paladin Alpha.” said the radio “Paladin Alpha, are you receiving?”

“Yes, of course we are... Castle.” said the new Captain of Vindication “Is something wrong? I thought we were attempting to maintain radio silence right now.”

“Paladin, you are being watched though you know it not.” replied ‘Castle’ “My… sources… have revealed a little spying eye to me. I have marked the signal on your radar logs.”

“That’s a lightning bolt or something.” said a masked soldier, sitting at a technician’s console “I studied radar for weeks in preparation for this, Castle. Are you reading the records right?”

“I don’t just read the telemetry from your purloined weapon, you insolent moron.” said ‘Castle’ as a couple of the other soldiers on the bridge snickered “If I did, the pesky little virus they call ‘Nexus’ in its computers would have run you into an ambush hours ago. That signal is a Congreveopian AWACS aircraft of some sort. Now, you need to set about evading it.”

“Right.” said the Captain “Take us down to two hundred feet. Engines full ahead. Steer ten degrees to starboard of a course directly away from the signal origin.”

“I can’t quite place the source.” said the soldier, staring at the data on the screen in front of him “It seems to be bouncing all over.”

“Oh for crying out loud!” said ‘Castle,’ marking the origin on the display “It’s there! I should have just bribed the crew rather than have you idiots running this thing!”

“You can’t bribe a MAAPS pilot for all the Nickels in Jupiter.” said the Captain “We’re doing what we can, Castle. You’ll just have to catch their mistakes when they make them.”

Overwhelming Silence, Bridge, 0142 hours:

“Shoot.” said another technician “I’m seeing heat increasing on all of Vindication’s turbines.”

“I confirm that Vindication is losing altitude and gaining speed.” said the chief radar technician “Something spooked her, and she’s running.”

“Not the AESA radar.” said the technician who had first noticed the signal “I’d bet my lunch money they couldn’t see that. Did they see us?”

“No.” said the chief radar technician “Her course is roughly perpendicular to the heading we describe with them. I think it was the AESA. That would fit with her new course.”

“Okay.” said the technician “I was planning on paying 75 cents out of pocket for a soda with the standard lunch today. Don’t spend it all at once.”

“Enough.” said the Captain “We’ll give chase once the Mantas are safely away. Pilot, I trust you believe this to be feasible?”

“I’m a leaf on the wind.” said the Pilot, beginning to reconfigure the pressure values across the gas cells “Vindication was never the fastest ship in the fleet, and she’s flying with the wind to her flank without compensating. I could land us right on top of her without alerting them or stressing the engines.”

“Seeing as they just noticed a radar signal we almost missed with our fully-functional computer system, let’s not go making assumptions about their perceptive capabilities.” said the Captain “Just follow them at range as we planned, okay?”

"Budiman, we need our mission checklist, contact Nexus for me, will you," Roland ordered, pulling out the controls to his drone. It was a wonderful machine; cheap, reliable, and silent. All of these factors made for an excellent pair of eyes before they made their jump. Of course, it might have problems in a firefight, but that's not exactly what it was built for. The smart drone could be called the Kalashnikov of drones, built to last in the harshest of conditions. It could undertake aerial with quad propellers, or ground movement with wheels, and was capable of being controlled from a distance of several kilometers. Should the operator choose to do so, it could also disengage and begin roaming on its own to detect anything of interest.

The only problem was that it wasn't armed with anything but explosives. Of course, that was expected.

The S.O.N.I.C.-based operator nodded, and began setting up a connection under the code name Arctus-3 to Nexus. "This is Budiman, demolitions and EOD, requesting our mission statements." The rest just began attending to their own devices, mostly being their armaments. Every last second meant another minute on the field.

Agamemnon

"I don't think you have to worry about me, Nexus. I've been chasing her ever since I've heard the news. I do, after all, get a certain... Liberty on what I can do. I have Vladimir heading your way, and we've got a sizable force of QRF ready for deployment. Don't even worry about medevacs and recovery. We've got all your services." He grinned behind the cover of the comms, and looked at the deck of his large battle carrier. The two helicopters took off from the back of the carrier, and headed forward in the direction of the MAAPS. On the more forward decks, however, the sound of multiple steam catapults was prevalent, and three separate F-8s were off the deck of the carrier. "I hope you can refuel some of my aircraft..."

TFA Group

The ten soldiers inside the H-11 attack/transport helicopter felt the rumble of the aircraft as it shook in the stormy weather, and even Vladimir had wished he had not eaten. Outside the helicopter, on the right side, they could see the H-10 helicopter dip and rise in the storm, being tossed this way and that. It must have been tough for the pilot to even keep his head inside that confined cockpit, but he had faith in the ability of his men.

"Alright, buggers. You all know what we're doing?" Vladimir asked over the comms system, watching each of the men stare at each other from their gas masks. Vladimir had decided not to take Arik on this mission, and he felt it was probably smart of him. He would've had to practically sedate the poor wolf in this weather, and he did NOT want to lug that around.

"More or less, Commissar. We've got the support of the helis, right?" Sarge asked, rolling around with the helicopter in his seat.

"Don't depend on them. It's a stormy area, and they're limited by fuel." Johnson replied matter of factly, staring at Sarge. He was a veteran of aircraft, and he knew exactly what they could do here. "Sir, the Bobcats are here."

Everyone looked outside the window to see the three Bobcats fly, wings fully extended, to the left of them, flying in formation with each other. They would be hanging back from the group, they knew. But he hoped they would be useful in this place.

"I hope this fucking robot Nexus gives us a call. I fucking hate flying in the rain." Samson growled, holding onto his rifle, and looking rather sick.

"You flew fighter bombers with me. What the hell do you mean you hate flying in the rain?" Johnson asked, a little surprised.

"I fucking hate flying in the rain, that's what it fucking means."
The beatings will continue. Regardless of morale.

The Mind of Nexus, subcore replying to Wheatley, 0141 hours:

“No, I suppose it wouldn’t appear to work with that model.” said Nexus “Don’t worry, it does actually work fairly reliably. We tested it earlier in Vindication’s deployment. But, it is classified, so maybe it's for the best if you can’t figure out how it works. Either way, there’s a laptop attached to it which has all of the control software on it. I’ll send you the login codes and the information on how to operate it.”

The Mind of Nexus, subcore replying to Captain Rhye, 0141 hours:

“If your aircraft have standard air-to-air refueling gear and can do 80 knots without stalling that should be fine.” said Nexus “I can’t give you the numbers, of course, but rest assured that your assistance greatly decreases my estimate of this mission’s worst-case-scenario casualties.”

Manta flight, 0144 hours:

Leighton felt the bumps and tosses of the storm return as Manta One cleared the bay of Overwhelming Silence and Nexus passed control back to the pilot. Behind, Manta Two also slid smoothly back into the tossing winds of the storm. The V-22s lined up in an echelon formation and tore away after the fleeing airship.

“So, time to inform you how you’re actually capturing this thing.” said Nexus to all TFA forces “Firstly, over 90% of a MAAPS’s armaments are mounted on the rigid structure below the envelope. While some of these are likely inoperable without me, others will definitely remain functional, and hence, we will be avoiding putting ourselves in their path. The envelope casts a shadow, so to speak, above the MAAPS that the weapons cannot reach. Most of them, at least. I think some of the missiles could corner tightly enough to —never mind. Either way, the top of the airship is the weak point, and so we’ll be infiltrating through there. There’s a maintenance tunnel that runs between the left and right aft cells and the central ballast cell to grant access to the top of the envelope for repairs. Manta flight will ‘land’ on the MAAPS, and the boarding teams will have to work their way to the maintenance hatch and climb down into the core of Vindication. Needless to say, the ladder down through the envelope creates a rather dangerous bottleneck, which is why we need to get everyone in before anyone aboard Vindication suspects they are being boarded. That means you should move quickly, but also remain stealthy once you’re inside. We’re going to rope everyone from each V-tol together with the harnesses and rope provided –you can begin getting into those now– and hopefully you can catch each other if someone falls. As for what to expect, the top of the envelope should feel solid beneath you, with traction resembling that of a wet ceramic floor. However, it will also be blowing in the wind. Do not assume, just because your weight is insignificant on it, that it will not act like the fabric it is. Also, if you fall, don’t try to stick a knife or anything into the envelope to stop yourself. Firstly, it will feel like you’re stabbing a block of hard plastic, so you will probably not even tear the envelope, but if you do, you will sound a MASTER WARN alarm on the bridge, and that will at the very least make the hostiles there extra alert. Needless to say that cutting the envelope with a knife doesn’t threaten the MAAPS. If you cut a line and remove the knife, it will fill with a gluey substance that hardens into a pressure-retaining scab on contact with oxygen or the special reactant the helium is spiked with. If you leave the knife, the scab will form around it, and your knife will be stuck there. And if you cut out a section of fabric that is too big to heal over, then we all get to see whether the people commanding Vindication now left the automatic cell breech pressure compensation software running, and you all get to go for a swim if they didn’t and I get yelled at by High Command, and none of us want that.”

“Step up the pace.” said the pilot of Manta One “You of all people should have the capacity to know how long your speech is and how much time a flight is going to take.”

“I’m going. I’m going.” replied Nexus “Just let me talk. You just wasted several seconds of the time I left for questions. Now, what are you guys doing once you’re inside? You’re splitting up to tackle different things. You’ll be entering the core of the MAAPS in the air compression section. It’s noisy and sits beside the generators and large hydraulic pumps, which are all also noisy. If normally lit, it will be relatively dark too. Perfect for sneaking around. Leighton’s team is first in because they actually have experience with the terrain. They will secure the area at the base of the ladder if necessary, then immediately depart with the Hurtian team to the computer core aft of them. They are Strike Alpha, and are going after Objective Alpha. Objective Alpha is to take back the MAAPS’s computers at the computer core, and once it’s done, the environment will stop fighting you every step of the way to the other objectives. The GAmeTopians are next, because they are the backup if Objective Alpha fails. They are Strike Bravo, and are going for Objective Bravo, which is an alternate way of capturing the airship’s computers. Their AI will brief them individually. Objective Charlie is to secure the hostages in the cargo bay. Most vital officially is the Captain. Speaking in the capacity of accomplishing the mission, though, the Pilot is critical. Her name is Doris Walker, and she is the one person on board who can genuinely fly the airship when everyone else is dead and I’m disabled. Obviously the bridge techs are important to the success of the mission as well, and any crew for any critical area that may be damaged. And, of course, all lives are valuable, and everyone there is a Congreveopian citizen, so I will be heartbroken if any of them die. Just, you know, remember that some lives are more valuable than others in the immanent future when deciding how to go about this. That’s Strike Charlie, consisting of the teams from Sonitusia, Anowa, and Donner Land. Strike Delta will be the teams from Kevlinski, CSN, and Sarejo. They are going to secure the bridge, and capture whoever was in charge of this, if able. Everyone else is Strike Echo, and they will guard that ladder in the core, because it is our way out if things go terribly wrong, assuming none of you want to try to find a parachute and jump from 200 feet. That’s excepting the Namien forces, who are Strike Foxtrot, and will be on standby to assist with evac in case the mission turns into… well… a Charlie Foxtrot.

Right. Okay. Best of luck. Does anyone have any questions?”

CRN Injunction, 0142 hours:

“Captain, new data on the VLF.” said the radio chief “Compliments of Nexus, and it appears that a Namien aircraft spooked Vindication into running. Heading and speed attached.”

“Inform Nexus that we can’t match that speed, not that he won’t have thought of that already.” replied the Captain as she worked out the math in her head “Begin pursuit. Nexus didn’t mention any other vessels nearby, correct?”

“Yes ma’am.” said the radio chief.

“He would have, if there was danger of us being heard.” said the Captain “Bring us up to flank speed.”

"Question," Budiman asked, "where will we extract these men and women to once we've taken them under our protection?" Hearing the conversation made Sarah feel let down, as she wouldn't be able to deploy any of the explosives that she carried. Of course, she didn't have to bring them in the first place, but she had expected something to require them. If the mission is hostage rescue, who would need demolition?

"Maybe I can blow down a door..." she muttered to herself optimistically.

"Other than that, you heard Nexus," Roland stated to his squad, "our top priority is securing the pilot of the aircraft, so keep your eyes out for her. Next is the captain for obvious reasons. I'll be using the drone to spot them, and we'll quickly work our way towards them. Try to look out for important tech personnel too, we may need them later on. We're working together with the Donner Landers and Anowans, so make sure we coordinate with each other well. Inde in cinerum, everyone."

Eldri listened to his mission and nodded. "Hit the bridge, neutralize the bridge crew, preferably nonlethal, and don't puncture the ship too badly. Simple enough, consider it done. Now to find out how simple it will actually be." He turned to his men and spoke directly to them, "Remember, he said capture. So shoot to maim, not to kill. If a hostile takes a hostage, you have authorization to use lethal force. Otheriwse, knee-cap them. Unless they shoot back. Then let the alchemists try to turn the lead in their bodies to gold, understood?" The squad nodded at his light-hearted but serious summary of the mission. They checked their rifles once more and prepared to begin their first mission with Task Force Atlas.

The Donnish Team listened to Nexus paying attention more to who they were working with. The person by the name of Doris was immediately made a high priority in rescue due to her being the only one around who could pilot the huge MAAPS by herself. The Captain although an important person on the ship was given second priority if anything were to happen. Of course it would be preferable if no one died, but if the situation were to come up where they had to choose, they would have to go with the Pilot as the better option considering she was vital. Any other crew were given the lowest priority if they had nothing to contribute to the mission success, which means Cooks and Janitors weren't going to have a good day for this operation.

Returning to the subject of who they were working with, the three Donnish Operatives had only worked with the Sonitusian forces once and the Anowa forces none. Maybe it was their native suspicion of Foreigners which Donner land was famous for but due to attempts to open up to the world they sent Squad 2 to TFA. Squad 2 was much more liberal when it came to Foreigners and even then much like many Donnish People they didn't like other Nations. But to remain professional they tried to push this aside and "befriend" the other teams. Needless to say, this hasn't gone too well especially since the Vanqaurians joined TFA there have been tensions. Regardless, they've kept their temper down which was rare compared to their behaviour at Point Alpha back in Donner Land.

The team as they flew began to connect themselves to the rope to board the MAAPS. They made sure they would use their footing techniques to not slip or fall off the structure from either the wind or the fabric itself. After connecting themselves to the rope they checked their equipment. They had only Stun Grenades instead if lethal Grenades to protect hostages. They of course carried their weaponry and wore their Knives in a secure pocket on their arms. Broken carried Thermite charges to burn through doors. Doc had his surgical kit with him and two dozen C-MEDLEX patches within that. Blitz and Broken also carried two wheeled drones. These drones could mark targets on the HUD of the LG Operatives and other teams. They both had one and we're controlled with small controllers with a display showing the camera. They were practically all set for the Operation as the other teams had the other needed equipment.

"Everyone set?" Blitz spoke to his team. "Keep your feet steady on the surface of the MAAPS. I don't need Broken to have more than one meaning for a nickname if you hit the water." Broken and Doc nodded and finished connecting themselves to the rope. "Hopefully we can finally make use of the new OSS." Blitz spoke.

"Hopefully I don't have to make use of these Patches." Doc spoke almost muttering as he looked through his Medical Bag making sure everything was in place.

TACUS-II/Triarii

TACUS-II was short a member. Even though Titus had said that she wouldn't be required on this op anyway, Titania had broken her leg to the knee when she suffered an accident during a training op. She was recovering well, but she'd be out of fighting condition for at least 4 weeks. Superiores Negotium had allowed her to return back to the Provinces on extended leave with her family until the injury healed, which was to the general chagrin to the rest of Triarii, which hadn't seen home in quite a while.

"There's this place back home in Puteoli, south of Centralis. Pala's Locus, I think it's called. They take a loaf of some sort of bread, and they fill it with gravy and meat and a bit of melted cheese and it's messier than that op the Speculatores had back in Danluka, but it tastes so god-damn good. The guy who runs it, name's Baelus or something, he's a nice old guy. Says he fought with Lance Ecaedus in Sassicorinthia in the Fourty-Fourth."

"The Thunderhawks?" Aurum asked.

"Surprised you know that. " Virga shrugged. "Well, anyways, when it's less busy, he tells me how he gutted a soldier crotch to chin with a box cutter in some hardware store in Arscae. Man's bullshit if you hear it from me, but he's got this big homely feeling and a roaring laugh that you'd swear would take that whole damn building down. But I'm not even to the best part. He's got this comely little daughter, helps him around the shop, and I'm about to get shot in the knee over it." Among many different traditions in Legatia, it was often considered unmanly to kneel before anyone. It was a joking term to get shot in the knee, because inevitably when you get shot in the knee you kneel. The term was widely used to mean proposing to a woman.

"I'm surprised, Virga." Pala waved, raising an eyebrow. "Could have sworn you had a thing for Diana."

"Couldn't steal your girl now, could I, Boss?" A small chuckle came from the Triarii operators.

"Yes, yes, you'll be my flower girl, Virga, dress you up all in silks." The helicopter came to a halt within the bay of Overwhelming Silence, and within a short period, another one of the Congreveopian technological wonders, Nexus, briefed them on their mission, giving them some sort of black rectangles and earpieces and informing them of their mission- which was rather auxiliary.

Pala quickly silenced Aurum's later complaints of the assignment, and boarded the VTOL, loading their rifles and carbines. The job was an important one, no doubt, and one that had to be done.

Viper Squad were carefully checking their lethal's and downgrading their firepower to atleast wound the target with an accidentally dangerous shot and not kill them in a high rate of death. All but their sidearm pistol, which was still on the combat-grade power that the MSBS-Radon was usually on, excluding the fact that the MP433 was a pistol and not a assault rifle. They didnt want to get caught in a heavy fire fight wounding. Nickel's combat drone was also on lethal, but it was an advanced firing system that knew where to shoot and how to avoid killing a target.
Despite the fact that they were going in as strike teams and their were sure to be some lethal misfires Viper Squad would stick to their orders. It was what was in their blood, it was their mental instinct to complete the task no matter the cost. As long the leader of this attack was confirmed alive after a successful mission then their objective was done.
Nickel spoke up, despite Nexus having not answered the Sonitusian operator he had a question representing their task," Is there a hackable camera feed system on the MAAP that were trying to catch? If we are inside the Vindication, is it operational from the inside of her? Questioning its existence..."

LT thought of several questions to ask, however he filed most of them away as obvious or unneeded. The rest of the squad remained silent as Winters asked his sole question, no matter how odd it sounded, "What limbs or bodily functions, does Ms. Walker require to maintain her ability to pilot at minimum."

Adrian piped up, "Way to sound creepy LT."

Durand slapped the back of his helmeted head. Winters simply ignored the comment in favour of waiting for a reply.

As the others interacted Kowalski remained silent, simply thinking of the upcoming deployment onto the state of the art war-blimp. It was times like this where Kowalski began thinking that his home had fallen to petty politics. His country used to pride itself on innovation in the military sector, but nowadays the only innovation they had made within the last decade had been fancy helmets and combining an MLRS and a fighter jet. It made him disheartened. It also made him hope that no one noticed the gun cam on his rifle.

"Alright I think we understand our orders, we are to secure the bridge, and capture the leader of the enemies. However, I have a question how will we know which one of the enemy combatants is the leader. As they are probably not a professional army I do not think that we would be able to identify him or her before we put a bullet into his skull. Do you have any intel who what the enemy leader looks like? If you do it will make our job of capturing him alive a lot easier, otherwise I do not enough confidence that we would leave the leader alive during the firefight." Jessica spoke up, as she gripped her AK-12, and started checking the gun for any possible jams, there were none of course, but it was always better to check rather than to have your gun suddenly run out of ammo during a firefight. The Kelvish brought a 3 man squad for the operation, as Jessica decided that Barry, the heavy would do too much damage, and the marksman would not do too much in the confined quarters. So, she decided to bring along with herself, an engineer for demolition, and the ever annoying infiltrator, and deputy commander.

The equipment load-out was slightly changed compared to regular missions. She is equipped with more grenades than normal with 4 rifle grenades, and 2 flashbang grenades as the operation. Daniel carried the same amount of grenades as usual, which is to say 3 flashbangs, and 1 grenade. The engineer carried 4 rifle grenades, and 2 flashbangs as well. The 3 members of the team did not carry much rations as the mission was not expected to take that long. Jessica apart from the grenade load-out, carried more or less the same weaponry. Daniel carried as the customary light loadout befit of the infiltrator, with a AK-12, grenades, light body armor, and a combat knife. The engineer had the greatest load-out change. Due to the mission's nature it was decided that he would be equipped with more C-4 than normal, and more rounds, while wearing lighter body armor to save on weight. They were instructed to utilize melee as often as possible due to the risk of collateral damage destroying something important.

"Other than that I think we are ready for the operation."

Ace listened to the breifing along with the rest of the squad, Ace was going to ask of how to identify the enemy leader however it was already asked by another squad, he had a few other minor questions which he decided to not ask, instead he began to check his Ak-92 for any possible jams and other possible malfunctions, he pressed the mag release and caught the mag with his left hand, he then unchambered the already chambered round and loaded the magazine back in the gun he then procceded to put the lone round into his pocket for good luck. Anarchist had left his GM-94 behind as to not cause too much damage to the airship as there was the danger of them being sucked out if a hole was made in the ship, instead he had brought along a zip line for the team to board the ship. Traveler had brought along his Ak-92 DMR meanwhile Shard brought his SVU as it was short and light allowing him to manuever around tight corners and hallways, meanwhile Angel had his regular Vityaz-SN.

As the team was done checking their weapons they all relaxed either leaning against something or just standing upright listening to music or performing more checkups on their weapons. However the team was silent in their activitys as they were disciplined and taught in basic training not to speak unless spoken.

Manta Flight, 0146 hours:

“All excellent questions.” said Nexus “I’ll repeat them as I get to them, for those of you who aren’t on the same aircraft as each other.

Firstly, cameras, because this pertains to future questions. I was asked if there were cameras and whether we could hack them. There are cameras. They are not obvious, being unobtrusively built to blend in with irregularities in the walls and such, and there is a security station on the bridge that can access all of them, which the hostiles may or may not have access to depending on how many computers they shut down. It would be a rather painstaking process to find each camera from its video feed and break it, but they might have done so. If the cameras are intact, I will regain access to them when Objective Alpha or Objective Bravo is completed. Alternatively, when Strike Delta takes the bridge, they can view the cameras from there. Once the cameras are ours, I will convert their data to the universal TFA format and Fort Bragg will pass that to you, so if you have a HUD or such it will update live with whatever the cameras see. I can also serve as a spotter for any team that wants, informing them of patrols and such, once we have the cameras.

Next, the leader of the hostiles. The question was how to identify them. I have no data on him or her at this time. Hopefully that will change once I get the cameras and/or security recordings when Alpha or Bravo is finished. If not, the Captain would typically stand to the right and behind the pilot’s chair in the center of the bridge, or sit in the chair to the left and behind it. Those are the positions it’s easiest to command a normal layout of bridge crew from, but we have no idea what shape the bridge is in now, or whether the leader of the group happens to be the pilot as well. Do your best in the moment to figure out who looks like they’re in a position of authority.

I was also asked what we are doing with the hostages once they’re freed. Idealy, we give the MAAPS to them and they fly it back to Congreveopia for repairs. It’s entirely feasible that we sweep and clear the airship of all hostiles, especially if I get the cameras back. Failing that, Manta flight can land in the bay once we reclaim the bridge and evac the hostages. You can then return to the top of the MAAPS and be picked up by the Namien aircraft and Overwhelming Silence. Yes, once Vindication’s weapons are no threat, we can bring Overwhelming Silence in close enough to roll out ladders and netting for you.

And finally, I was asked what condition Miss Walker would need to be in to fly the MAAPS. Firstly, she needs to be together and calm mentally. She’s been through combat training, so she probably won’t panic at gunfire or anything, but it might be somewhat harder for her to focus if she has been shot. I'm sure you can all sympathize. As for physically operating the controls, there are foot pedals for various purposes, but she’s trained to fly the MAAPS on nothing more than a computer keyboard if the bridge is compromised, so two arms and hands are probably all she needs in the way of limbs. She might be able to do it one handed, but that’s not in the training regiment, so I don’t know if we want to try it. Hopefully, she won’t have to fly at all, because I can fly once I have the computers, but it pays to prepare for all eventualities.

If that’s all, then you are approaching the MAAPS now. Prepare for drop-off.”

Manta Flight, Leighton’s Squad (Strike Alpha), 0149 hours:

Leighton stood in front of the rear ramp, holding onto a handle on the wall as the V-22’s acceleration caused the direction of gravity to pitch and roll under him. He was a Platinum Soldier, trained with the original corps aboard the massive aircraft Fortress, and he was at home in the sky. He saw out the open rear of the aircraft as they popped up from skimming the surface of the sea, exchanging speed for the height needed to gently hover over the top of Vindication. Outside, the rain fell diagonally as is V-tol matched the eighty knot speed of the airship beneath it. He felt the slack in the line attached to his harness, and watched as the pilot gently brought the ramp to within a meter of the rolling surface beneath, waited, timed his jump, and leapt out.

The next series of events happened very fast. A leader of lightning, seeking a quicker path to the ground, chanced upon Vindication and made contact with the rear starboard propellor. From there, it flowed through the metal structure supporting the engine into the rigid decks’ exterior plating then down into the sea by way of about 200 feet more of air. Immediately following, the return stroke brought its twenty thousand amps down through the engine and the airship. The structure and exterior plating bore the lightning strike easily as they were built to. The engine did not. A tube of lubricating hydraulic fluid released its contents over the interior of the engine, which quickly erupted into flames, which were then enclosed from the rain by the protective cowling. The heat from these began melting through other pipes and the fire grew as fuel continued to be pumped in to feed it.

This was a military airship, though, and fire protection had been woven into every layer of its design. All of the materials in the engine were fireproof and neither the cowling nor the envelope nearby would burn for a while yet. The engine was compartmentalized, and the fire had to fight its way past metal walls as it tried to expand out of the enclosing space that was rapidly running out of oxygen. As soon as the fluid was loose, the tube’s pressure monitor knew there was a problem, and shortly thereafter the heat sensors in the engine knew about the fire. If Nexus, or even a competent crew, had been in charge of the airship the fire would have a precious few seconds before the engine would be flooded with Halon, the propellor would be feathered, and the fire would be extinguished. Instead, the engine kept going, keeping the propeller feeding air to the blaze. A few extinguishers halfheartedly triggered as the heat climbed, but the mainly kept the fire away from the envelope rather than extinguishing it.

Leighton saw a flash of bright light, drowning out everything else, then heard a colossal boom, only partially dissipated by his headset’s gunshot-noise-protection system. He went limp for a hard landing, having completely lost which direction was up in the confusion, then hit the envelope, rolled, and wound up sprawled on his back. He felt a wave of the fabric pass under him as he lay there still blinded and then began to slip to his left. He rolled onto his front and began scrambling back in the direction that felt like up as his vision cleared. Then he felt a tug on his cable and he saw Thomas grab his arm and haul him back into the middle of the envelope. He couldn’t hear anything, but Nexus had realised that, and he saw chat messages appearing on his HUD corresponding to what his squad was saying.

“Hey, Hey! You okay? That didn’t shock you did it?” -Thomas.

“I mean, as in ‘electric shock’. It startled all of us.” -Thomas.

Leighton nodded and gave Thomas a thumbs up as he got back on his feet. He saw others beginning to disembark from the V-tols, and began walking aft over the flexing surface of the envelope to the hatch. It wasn’t too different from being on a ship in high seas or in a plane under extreme turbulence, aside from the slipperiness, and he wouldn’t have gotten far aboard Fortress if he couldn’t handle turbulence. The fire was still hidden from view in the engine cowling.

“Are the engines designed to handle lightning?” -Charles.

“They should be.” -Nexus.

“The cabin and the envelope too? Could it start a fire?” -John.

“The entire airship is lightning proof, and its fire suppression is state-of-the-art. Besides, this is filled with Helium; we’re not about to pull a Hindenburg.” -Nexus.

Leighton reached the hatch as the ringing in his ears began to subside and clipped a tether from his harness onto a loop of metal that Nexus had indicated could support a person’s weight. Charles, third in the rope, stepped past Thomas and placed his PCU over an NFC reader next to the hatch. A progress bar appeared on screen, and after a few seconds there was the sound of a clamp releasing. Leighton opened the hatch and stepped onto the ladder. He hit the quick-release on his climbing harness and shrugged it off, leaving it behind as a connection between the rope and the tether he’d set. Then he started down into the MAAPS, a thin string of lights illuminating the ladder down between the gas cells as they flexed and sagged like the beating of a massive heart.

Vindication, Core, exterior top access ladder, 0150 hours:

Leighton slid silently down the last few rungs to the floor, emerging from the dim maintenance tunnel into the dark core of the MAAPS. Directly ahead of him, he saw two guards walking away towards a door. He grabbed his rifle and aimed it at one of the guards’ heads, barely daring to breath despite the fact that the sound of machinery could have drowned out someone starting a motorcycle. They continued out through the doorway, and it closed behind them. Leighton breathed a sigh of relief, and Thomas appeared, climbing down the ladder.

“Nexus, two hostiles on patrol.” whispered Leighton “Passed through the door in front of me. Rifles, black clothing, ballistic armor, balaclavas, helmets, pistols, something else on a belt-mount. Looks like mil-spec gear.”

“Understood, I saw them.” said Nexus, looking through the video from Charles’s helmet camera “Continue to the objective, I’ll alert the other squads that these people look like professionals. I think the other thing was a Taser. Not sure.”

“Nexus, is my armor Taser-proof?” asked Charles as he arrived in the core.

“Depends on where it hits you, but I definitely wouldn’t rely on it.” said Nexus “If that’s military, it’ll go right through your sleeve or any part of your pants that aren’t a pocket. Your chest-rig might stop it, but I can’t promise anything.”

“Let’s get to the objective.” said Leighton as John reached the floor, turning and heading for the Computer Core.

The SPECTRA team strode out the back of their transport and onto the rigid structure of the MAAPS. The storm drowned out most noise, and created a hazardous surface to walk on. Despite the rain and thunder the team made it to the hatch and into the massive machine in one piece. Winters was at the head of the squad, shield out and Vector poking out around it. Behind him his squad was either aiming over the shield or watching the rear.

Winters gave a short order to his team, "Wait until the rest of strike charlie arrives, then we'll get going."

The rest of the team responded in the positive. Affirming that they understood the order.
