I feel that if anything the switch from 2d to 3d made them more artistic in my opinion.

I think the issue comes down to aesthetic preferences, really. 3D realism looks downright incredible, but if you're doing something abstract or odd, like the Grim Fandango or the like, 2.5D or 2D can give artists more time to work on creativity and imagination, over modelling a spatially logical world.

Well, yes, abstractness was lost to the 3D switch, but to be fair if we are going to measure art by how abstract it is, Pong is the most artistic game of all time under that rubric :p
