Seems like we have a habit of, excuse the pun, white-washing history in an attempt to reflect current positions and attitudes. It seems a little disingenuous, to be frank.

It's not supposed to be a touchy-feely pat on the back for our changing military and social demographics. It's about honouring those who served, and gave life or limb to defend us and ours. Smallpox isn't around anymore, so what other airborne illness could possibly be anywhere near as contagious or have as devastating of an impact? Assuming that some do get sick, they can be more readily treated or quarantined than would be the case centuries ago.
