I just had this crazy and very likely stupid idea, later (say, WWII) you could make Minengeschoss shells for anti-infantry use. I recall hearing (do not know how much truth there is to it, though) that 30mm Minengeschoss shells used in German planes had explosive power comparable to two grenades (it probably suffered from largely reduced fragmentation, though). You could probably use them as a means to give your soldiers a relatively good-range explosive "launcher" to deal with enemy forces from a distance, maybe even counter-sniper duties (got one hiding in that building? shoot at the window and watch bricks flying everywhere and almost completely destroying the room you just fired at).

In fact, i was thinking about a two-man portable 40mm/30mm autocannon firing what would be basically a 40mm projectile of a Bofors 40mm AA gun/30mm Minengeschoss shell, but with a much shorter case to reduce recoil. It would obviously have a slow velocity and absurd ballistic drop, but would not be used for long-range applications but instead at equal/marginally longer ranges that today's grenade launchers. Their role would be to rain an enemy infantry position with explosive shells, like a mini-artillery piece, only focused on eliminating enemy infantry with precision rather than obliterating a map sector. That and providin fire support/cover for friendly infantry.

Again, these are probably stupid ideas anyways.

That could technically work against infantry but the rifle is giant. You won't be carrying it long distances so you won't really have the chance to run into enemy infantry when on foot. It would be transported mainly by trucks and half tracks, where you would have access to heavy machine guns mounted to them, so why not use them instead? And if you have it for a defensive position then again you would have HMGs and likely artillery support.

All in all doesn't seem worth it to use against infantry, unless it just so happens to be the best thing available.

IMO a tight-grouping shotgun is the best anti-zombie weapon without resorting to explosives. You want to be ripping off or shredding limbs and destroying muscles so they can't keep chasing you, and a shotgun will do that better than a rifle.

Shotgun is a popular choice in zombie survival media, but the downside to a shotgun is that the ammo is big, recoil is comparatively hefty, and they're loud. You don't have to shred limbs, you just have to tag the brain. I'd think that a .22 rifle would be sufficient, and you could carry 1000+ rounds in two pockets.

A question regarding general purpose LE rounds. Would it be advisable to do a sort of armour-piercing hollowpoint projectile? Imagine, essentially, a typical solid brass hollowpoint, but with a steel penetrator down the middle.

This is what I was saying about shotguns. Three shots (both shoulders and one to the pelvis) and it's done for. The bones will be shattered and the muscles will be ruined. Sure, it won't be totally dead, but it won't really be a threat unless you go over and feed yourself to it.

True, but a crawler is slower and less threatening than a walker. Though this is all rather silly in the end. If the zombie doesn't need heart or lungs to continue operations, why does it need a spine and muscles? Why does it need a brain. Only true way to destroy zombies is complete immolation.
