International Space Agency

Welcome to the International Space Agency!

Who We Are

The International Space Agency is a collection of nations dedicated to the advancement of humanity by the means of space exploration. We are comprised of many different nations, from those who have sent probes to other planets to those who haven't quite gotten their first rockets off of the launch pad yet. Collectively we are all dedicated to furthering the reaches of humanity in the vast expanse of space and further our knowledge of the final frontier.

What We Do

The International Space Agencies owns and operates numerous facilities and assets both on the ground and in space that are open for use, from launch pads to rockets to even space stations. While nations are welcome (and encouraged!) to supply their own material as necessary, the Agency will allow cooperation between nations so that every nation has an equally important part to play. Nations who are in need of financial support can receive Agency-bought material to further their programs' fruition.

Memberships

Founding Member: Given to members of the previous International Space Agency. These are generally senior members, though this rank is totally equal to a Full Member of the ISA. Founding Members have no special privileges.

Full Members: Full Membership is given by an accepted application. Full Membership entitles a member nation to all privileges and rights associated with membership of the ISA. Full Members are highly encouraged, but not obligated, to give funds to the ISA for it's operations.

Partial Members: Partial Members are nations interested, but not fully committed to the ISA, and therefore are not allowed all the privileges and rights associated with membership. Nations may use this form of membership as a trial period for the ISA, or those who don't fully wish to commit to the program. This status is given by an accepted application.

Observer: Nations that are not committed or officially affiliated with the ISA, therefore not enjoying any advantages a member would enjoy. They simply are interested in the program, but not willing to commit. This status simply requires stating that your nation would like to become an observer.

Facilities

The ISA maintains and operates, in conjunction with a multitude of member nations, numerous facilities on earth available for use. This list will be compiled by the Director of Facilities and Construction and updated as much as possible.

    Legatia:
  • Columbianus Space Center- manned flights, heavy launches
  • Castrum Peregrina- suborbital flights, aerodynamics, spaceplanes, limited unmanned launch facilities
  • Ostia Manned Spaceflight Center- astronaut training, education, research, mission control.
  • International Space Agency Headquarters- also located in Ostia. Will serve as ISA's international headquarters.
  • Tario Mountain Propulsion Center- fabrication and development, propulsion tests, wind tunnel, simulations, limited polar launches
  • Ecaedus Station- Low-earth orbit space station, able to house up to 8 astronauts for an extended period of time. Has an attached orbital tug able to move smaller ships and vehicles.
  • Low-cost and availability to launch aboard Aeneas MPCV launches into LEO.
  • Reduced prices and prioritization of old Saturn III vehicles.

  • United States of Conner:
  • 10 Launch Facilities
  • 23 Drones
  • 19 Satellites
  • 15 off world bases (Moon, Mars, etc.)

  • Congreveopia:
  • Spaceport Congreveopia (polar or equatorial launches)
  • High speed laser data transmission facilities (seven, all within Congrevopia)
  • Experiments and personnel can be flown to Destiny (my space station) at reduced prices
  • High speed satellite communications network for earth-orbiting satellites
  • Access to all data from Congreveopian scientific satellites/rovers, and SpaceNet (asteroid detection satellite network)
  • Facilities for fabricating any complicated parts that a nation might not be able to produce itself, available with prioritisation and reduced cost.
  • In emergencies, anyone would be welcome to come aboard Destiny until transport to the ground can be provided
  • In emergencies, we can launch an Orbital Skiff or deploy one from Destiny to retrieve any personnel in danger (in LEO)
  • Prioritisation and a reduced price for launching cargo aboard our Liberator rockets.

Shyluz:
  • Kartoffel Cosmonautical Academy -- Astronaut training, advanced base personnel training, and doubles as a public university for those interested in orbital mechanics, physics, and engineering.
  • Waystation IV -- Fuel, basic supplies, anything you need in a convenient, small, manned space station in LEO.
  • Cosmonautical Production Laboratory II -- Headed by alumni of the KCA, all specializing in mechanical engineering, the CPLII is Shyluz's chief means of production of complex rocketry components and spacecraft.
  • Glazhia Orbital Launch Facility --
Heavy launches, light launches, anything and everything can be launched here. Including some of the aforementioned classified projects. The only real issue is the fact that it's in the middle of one of the most secure military installations in the world, and is under complete military control. Because of this, using it as a ISA launch site equates to about seventy miles of olive drab tape.

Nice to see this rebooted. Time to re-apply my nation!

Member Application

Full Nation Name: The Research Testbed of Congreveopia
Head of State: President William Congreve

Are you willing to allow the ISA to use any facilities your nation owns? If so, what are they?:

Money pledged to the ISA annually: 50 billion NSD

Name of Space Agency: Congrevopia Space Command
Type (Public, private, etc.): Public
Annual budget (NSD): 500 billion NSD
Location of Headquarters: Spaceport Congreveopia, Northern Congreve Mountains
Location of Mission Control: Spaceport Congreveopia, Northern Congreve Mountains

Why does your nation want to join the ISA?: To aid other nations in exploring space and build ties with other space agencies. Also to collaborate on technology that would otherwise not be cost-effective to develop.

Director Application

Name of Nation: The Research Testbed of Congreveopia
Name of Space Program: Congrevopia Space Command
Desired Director position: General Director
Representative: Glenard Crossfield

Why do you want this position: [answer pending response to query below]
Short bio/experience of Representative:[/b] He began his career working as a fighter pilot for the Congreveopian Air Force, eventually moving into the role of test pilot. When Congreveopia Space Command was created, he joined as an astronaut. He conducted many successful missions, and began unofficially advising the leadership on planning missions. It came as no surprise to everyone except him that he was put in charge of planning and overseeing missions a few years later when he grew too old to continue flying them. He served as lead mission planner and overseer for several years in Congreveopia Space Command, and then moved on to help the ISA in the same role when Congreveopia first joined the organisation. After working for several years as Director of Planning and Operations in the ISA, he is now seeking to move forwards and use his experience in managing to step up from coordinating operations to overseeing the efforts of the entire ISA.

With regard to the "Why do you want this position" question, are we writing that from an IC "Why is your nation sending someone to become that director" perspective or an OOC "Why are you creating an app for that director" question?

Congreveopia is an advanced MT nation, managed by the artificial superintelligence known as "Nexus". It is very active in global affairs, and loves manipulating nations to steer the future of the world.

That would be an OOC perspective. I don't really want someone going for a Director position just to have a Director position, if you know what I mean. It doesn't have to be long, perhaps like a sentence or two. Otherwise, you've been accepted.

Why do you want this position: I really like the idea of the ISA on NS, and I'd like to maintain a realistic environment in it, while also not scaring away newcomers. Being the general director, I would be in a position to exercise soft control over maintaining realisim and keeping the ISA focused. (e.g. Rather than banning a project to build the Starship Enterprise for being unrealistic, as general director, I could break it down into smaller realistic projects with more manageable budgets (efficient long-range propulsion "warp" project, hard-kill anti-space-debris "shield" project, etc), maintaining realism and dealing with the problem gently IC rather than harshly OOC.

Also, the BBCode on the OP broke, and it's probably my app's fault. Anyways, check to see if you tried to nest a box in a box (which NS isn't prepared to deal with), and maybe use a quote or something instead.

Short bio/experience of Representative: He began his career working as a fighter pilot for the Congreveopian Air Force, eventually moving into the role of test pilot.

Also, the BBCode on the OP broke, and it's probably my app's fault. Anyways, check to see if you tried to nest a box in a box (which NS isn't prepared to deal with), and maybe use a quote or something instead.

The BBCode on the OP I determined was due to some sort of previous formatting error I couldn't find. I moved everything down a bit, it appears to be working fine.

In addition, congratulations. You have been accepted as ISA's first General Director! Glad to have you on board.

On a second note, once we get a couple more members, I'd like to host an RP for the ISA to get us kicked off. If you have any ideas, feel free to post.

On 2016-08-13 at 20:50:06 UTC, the ISA robotic asteroid capture mission Inspiration launches from Columbianus Space Center in Legatia. Less than a day later at 07:54:32 UTC, Inspiration is struck by an unidentified piece of debris during its main burn to escape Earth's gravity. The burn aborts, and the probe enters a highly eccentric orbit inclined at 58.9° verging between Low and Medium Earth Orbit. A few minutes later, contact is reestablished via an antenna aboard a small orbiter attached to the primary lander. After a couple hours' work, controllers manage to extract a full systems report from the lander and the launch vehicle's upper stage via a complicated hack of the lander from the orbiter's computer, which reveals that the lander's main communications dish has been damaged beyond repair, meaning the probe will no longer be able to communicate with Earth in interplanetary space.

Rather than give up on the 3.1 billion dollar mission, the ISA reschedules its agenda of cargo launches and decides to send the Space Shuttle Venture (Servintian design) to repair the lander's communications dish. On the second of September, Venture launched into a two week mission to acquire Inspiration, survey it for further damage, and then restore it enough that it can complete its mission.

After three days, Venture reached Inspiration. Inspiration's dish was mostly gone, along with one of the probe's four main solar arrays, but the propellant tanks on the launch vehicle and Inspiration were virtually undamaged, so it was decided that Venture could rendezvous and proceed with the mission at minimal risk. Inspiration was successfully grappled on the fifth day, following a series of distance observations. On the seventh day, as the survey of the damage was almost complete, the shuttle was struck by a piece of large debris, presumable from Inspiration, beneath the right wing. The debris took a path up through the thermal shield and the shuttle's underbelly into the right side of the cargo bay and then out through the left side of the shuttle in the front of the engine section. This caused significant damage to shuttle systems, although it thankfully did not directly threaten the crew. Most critically, the damage to the thermal shield means that the shuttle is now unable to safely reenter Earth's atmosphere.

The RP would feature three different aspects that can contribute to the story:
  • The astronauts aboard Venture, attempting to survive aboard a crippled Shuttle.
  • The efforts of the mission control team on the ground to prolong the Shuttle's lifetime in space until rescue can be devised (using solar panels from Inspiration to supplement the limited power from the Shuttle's fuel cells, etc.)
  • The planning by the ISA as a whole to construct a rescue mission for the astronauts aboard Venture.

This is a rather brilliant idea. I'm not entirely sure of that shuttle's statistics, if you wouldn't mind, you can send me any information over TG. This has a large number of Apollo 13-esque elements which I could see being very interesting. If the other members are up for this, we could use this as our first roleplay.

I'm sorry to be a bother, but at the current level the ISA doesn't have technology to send humans beyond the Inner Solar System, or control probes outside of the sun's sphere of influence. I apologize, but I'm going to have to deny you for this time.

Yeah, I'm concerned by that as well. It really does shake up the nature of an MT/PMT space agency a lot, and it raises a lot of questions. Is there another world that can support life in the solar system or are we communicating over interstellar ranges? Why would we spend our budget sending probes to planets that are probably dead when we could be working on interacting with one that is definitely alive? How did our civilisations happen to reach a spacefaring age at almost exactly the same time? Did deities intervene, or is the progress of technology tied to some aspect of the development of a solar system?

It's an interesting universe for a story or an RP, but I don't think it's a good universe for running a modern space agency like NASA or such.

Sevintia designed it (except for the Robotic Arm, which was my work), so he'd be the one to ask. Honestly, though, I don't know if either of us ever worked out much of the technicals. I think it might be best to assume its similar to the RL Space Shuttle and figure out its exact specifications as the situation demands (someone on the OOC says "how long will the power last", then I, you, Servinita, or whoever looks up the answer for the RL Space Shuttle and adapts it to the Servinitan Shuttle).

Congreveopia raises a good point, Gurori. It's not because of your application, but in this environment I don't think it would make sense. I'll stand by my current decision for now. I'm sorry about this.

I'll work out details with Servinta when the time comes. Though the RL space shuttle was never designed for missions beyond LEO. Since this thing is in a highly inclined orbit whose apogee lies in MEO, obviously it would take some modifications to the shuttle for a mission of that duration.

Expect the app to take a while though, as I'm creating an entire Space Agency from scratch. But I already have a suitably ironic name -- the SOS. Shyluz Orbital Service. 8)

Ominous, ain't it?

It's pretty innovative, I'll give you that.

I can sell you some rockets, if you want them. ISA members get discounts, too.
