Do the thing.
2186 AD. The Reapers, the boogeymen from the galaxy's past had been thought to have been just that; monsters, not an extant threat. This all changed when just several years prior, Sovereign, thought to be a Geth warship, began to attack Citadel space. Sovereign sought to bring the rest of its kind through the Relays in order to begin their "cycle" of wiping the galaxy clean of organic life every 50,000 years. A single human, Commander Shepard, and the crew he assembled marshaled what strength they could, learned of Sovereign's true identity as one of the Reapers, and as Sovereign began its task at the Citadel, he brought the fleets of the Systems Alliance to bear just in time, saving the Citadel Council and destroying Sovereign, at the expense of a number of human warships. The threat was believed to have ended.
That was not the case.
A short time later, Shepard had been tasked with lessening the threat of slavers and geth, still thought to be the largest threat against galactic life, when a new one appeared, quickly destroying the Normandy. A number of lives were lost, including the Commander's. Hope was not lost, however. Cerberus, a pro-human terrorist organization, found Shepard's body and began the 'Lazarus' project; with the explicit task of restoring Shepard to the man he was, one-hundred percent, at any cost. Billions of credits and two years later, the project was a success. Shepard lived again, a mix of organic reconstruction and advanced cybernetics, and working with Cerberus, who provided him a new Normandy, the SR2, and a new crew, he went to work, discovering who was behind the recent string of disappearing human colonies. When he did, whoever, the answer was terrifying. Collectors, a legend or myth of the Terminus systems, were not only real, but quite devastating. They were the ones behind the abductions of the human colonies, and after chasing down leads and gathering new allies, he went to their base through the fabled Omega-4 relay, right in the middle of the Galactic Core. There, he encountered the Collectors true objective; a human-form Reaper. After saving his crew, Shepard was able to destroy the Reaper, and set off a charge that caused a chain reaction, destroying the base, with all of his companions and crew surviving what could only be described as a suicide mission.
Several more months and events transpired, namely the destruction of an entire solar system by Shepard's hand. This delayed the return of the Reapers, although at the cost of several hundred thousand Batarian lives, causing Shepard to be grounded, and relieved of command of the Normandy. The Normandy went through a period of renovations and retrofits, and became the SR3, now more than just a frigate, the Normandy could serve as a mobile command center, and strategize and oversee an entire war. The galaxy was now more open to the thought of the Reapers being a real threat, but it was too little too late.
The Reapers arrived in the space of the Batarian Hegemony first, and within a day, the Reaper force had decimated their military, slaughtered most of their civilians, and destroyed almost all of their colonies. Only a few ships were able to escape, taking the risk of going through Human space into the Viper Nebula, and settling in the Bahak system. Should the Reapers come, it would be their final stand.
After the destruction of the Batarians, with the galaxy still largely unaware of their presence, thanks to the media and information censorship of the Hegemony, they moved towards Earth, with one contingent of Sovereign-class ships attacking the fleets of Humanity at Arcturus Station, and the station itself, home to the government and bureaucracy of the Systems Alliance, annihilating all who were there. This was not their only move, because at the same time, a larger force of dozens, if not, over a hundred Sovereign-class Reapers blew through the Human fleets and defences in Sol, destroyed the base on Luna, Earth's moon, and minutes later attacked Earth, striking all across the world, with one of the last places they landed being the supercity of Seattle-Vancouver, home of the military command of the Systems Alliance, quickly destroying it. Shepard his crew aboard the Normandy, Joker, Ashley, and Vega, were one of the only ones who made it off Earth alive. In a last minute transmission, Admiral Hackett, leader of the Alliance Navy, directed Shepard to go to the Prothean Archives, to recover the blueprints of a Prothean device discovered by Liara T'soni, an old friend. The last sight those aboard the Normandy saw were the burning of Earth, and the dozens of broken hulls and tattered carcasses that remained of the proud fleets that once stood watch over Earth and her people.
