God is dead and we have killed him

Postby United States of White America » Mon Sep 21, 2015 10:44 am

Although Nietzsche was a god-fearing atheist and his quote is positive, I believe it is negative. I think God has died because of our corrupt, open society, where there is no objective sense of right and wrong. Instead, I propose to resurrect God and avenge him.
Christianity is good. Atheism is not. Deal with it.

I'm surprised a Christian doesn't know how to use the phrase 'god-fearing' properly. Never been to church?

Not much of a god if he dies for such a shitty reason.

Can't God resurrect and avenge himself? I'm kinda busy all week.

I think "God" is neither dead nor alive.
Also, I highly doubt that Nietzsche feared "God"...

I think the point is, what or who is God? Is it a moral, is it a being, is it a war lord? What is your definition of God. Honestly, anyone can "kill a God", you can deny him, or go against a teaching, in theory that kills that beings power over you since you don't follow it. Yet, it doesn't kill the God since others can believe in it. Yet, you come to the point of does the God even need your compliance to do as he pleases? That opens up another viewpoint. So, honestly this can be viewed many ways.

This is ridiculous...

God definitionaly can't be dead; if he exists, then he definitionaly can't die

You have to keep things consistent. Either God exists and he is alive... or God doesn't exist. There is no such thing as God exists and he is dead now (let alone any further consideration of whether or not he should be resurrected and avenged).

We should pay no attention to this Mr. N whoever he was because his statement simply isn't consistent. If something dies, then that something definitionally can't be ''God''; Mr. N thought he was being witty but in fact he's just saying contradictory and impossible things. Quite a typical move for self-styled academic philosopher elites I suppose...

Nietzsche was referring specifically to the power of Christianity, which he felt was being rapidly outpaced by developments in the naturalistic sciences. Essentially, for him, the death of God means humanity has to step up to the plate and fill that void with new meaning or risk being consumed by nihilism - which he detested, and which he felt was rapidly sweeping Europe.

You mean it can't be the Christian God. Immortality is not a prerequisite to being a god, since a god is merely "a superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature or human fortunes". Nowhere in there does the concept of immortality become necessary.

Nietzsche killed God so he could usurp the throne and be patron god of edginess.
For anyone wondering, I joined this website during my edgy teenage years. I made a lot of dumb, awkward posts, flip-flopped between various extreme ideologies, and just generally embarrassed myself. I denounce a sizable amount of my past posts. I am no longer active on NationStates and this nation/account is no longer used.

Nietzsche's point was not that God both literally existed and is now literally dead. His point was a more poetic way, I'd argue, of articulating the observation that Western secularism meant the decline of a reliance on Abrahamic morality in the West.

Taking it literally would be an incredibly stupid way of dismissing Nietzsche.

Except of course that it isn't a contradiction since Nietzsche did not mean it in the biological sense of death. Nietzsche indicated that the pervading influence of Christianity and Christian morals was waning in Europe and that the "death" of God would mean that a new set of values would have to fill the void lest humanity risk slipping into nihilism.
