OPERATION NIGHTINGALE
An Effort to Neutralize a WMD Threat to the Zubros Region

OOC

SITREP

Excerpt Taken from JTF9's Report on the Present Situation.
Translated From Estonian to English
19/08/2016

The nation of Holiyra has been an ever present threat to the Zubros Region, constantly threatening the use of biological and nuclear weaponry against its neighbours. Ever since Holiyra's democratic government had been overthrown in 1941, with the rebels receiving funding and weapons from the USSR, Holiyra has assumed a hostile stance against the entire Zubros Region, regardless of political ideologies. However, there has been even more distress within the country.

As of 0200 Hours on July 24 2016, the nation of Holiyra has erupted into a full scale, three-way civil war between a Democratic Insurgency Movement, a Dictatorship Loyalist Force & a third-party force belonging to former Holiyra Military Officer, General Amar Jahmya. ORIA has confirmed that all three factions have caused equal amounts of damage, both against each other and against the local civilian populations.

However, JTF9's Team 5 has confirmed that there is even more graver news in store.

Jahmya's Rebels have seized control over Holiyra's capital of Ajamakri from Loyalist forces. Jahmya, with the capital in his hands, had declared himself Supreme Ruler of Holiyra, furthering said claim with the threat of the WMDs and his knowledge on how to use them. He has openly expressed to "lay waste to the surrounding Allah-condemned nations within the Zubros Region".

---End Excerpt---
Operation Nightingale would be a reactionary operation, functioning alongside a Zubros coalition invasion of Holiyra. Task Force Atlas' role would be to seek and destroy the WMD sites (located near the capital), if there are any, in order to remove the threat of a Holiyran retaliation. Due to the area of the operation, Task Force Atlas will not encounter any Democrat or Loyalist forces (which is a good thing considering they would also be hostile to Atlas forces). Ontorisan Intelligence has confirmed that the local regiment in charge of protecting the presumed area of the WMD sites is the 206th Regiment, a "half-and-half" (roughly half are combat experienced and half are green recruits) regiment who participated in the fight for Ajamakri.

Nightingale will take 8 hours before the Coalition invades Holiyra, so there it's a tight schedule. Task Force Atlas is expected to be in and out within 5 to 6 hours, the extra 2 are there in case if something goes wrong. From there, if the initial operation is successful, Atlas can move Eastwards to link up with friendly forces and assist in the capture of Ajamakri. Remember, if Nightingale fails, the Zubros Region, home to millions of people, will be completely glassed.

OBJECTIVES

PRIMARY - Seek & Destroy the WMD Facilities by whatever means necessary.

SECONDARY - Link up with friendly forces & push to capture Ajamakri

TERTIARY - Find & Capture General Amar Jahmya

TERTIARY - Obtain "hard" evidence documenting any forms of genocide.

ONTORISA NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY (ONBC)
The Informative with Hasmaj Oslit

The camera swung in to reveal a 56-year old man, dressed in a well-made, clearly foreign and expensive suit. His hair was combed over, slick with styling gel as he smiled at the camera, showing off white, pearly and perfect teeth. His name was Hasmaj Oslit, one of ONBC's most trusted and respected newscasters.

"Good evening." Oslit began, his voice calm and cool as he spoke. "Welcome to the Informative. I'm Hasmaj Oslit. As of now, we are currently following this top and most distressing story:

"Ontorisa has expressed concern over the, civil war-torn country of Holiyra, where self-proclaimed Supreme Ruler of Holiyra General Amar Jahmya, has threatened the neighbouring countries in the Zubros Region, with Weapons of Mass Destruction. Jahmya, a former military officer of the Holiyran Armed Forces, has also professed that he possesses the sites and has the knowledge on how to operate the weapons. While there is little to no information whether if WMDs are present, already, the countries of the Zubros Region have formed a coalition against Holiyra, poised to eliminate the threat as quickly as possible. Here to talk about the situation is our Security Analyst, Brattre Drua."

The camera panned to a young man, maybe in his mid-thirties, dressed equally as perfect as Oslit. He was dressed in a navy blue suit, with a white shirt and golden tie.

"So Brattre, what stance should Ontorisa take on this situation?" Oslit asked the younger man, intent on getting a good answer.

"Honestly Hasmaj," Drua replied, speaking clearly so the people watching could understand him. "We shouldn't get involved. As much as I've said in the past Ontorisa needs to step up for the smaller countries, this is not one of those situations where we need to deploy troops to fight this threat. The Zubros Coalition is strong enough. There's no need for Ontorisa to throw away more lives."

"I hope you're right Brattre," Oslit chimed in as he looked back at the camera. "We'll be right back after this break."

Theocracy of Holiyra
2300 Hours
Joint Task Force 9, 3rd Sniper Team, Lieutenant Yriak "Excalibur" Mirosburg

Mirosburg looked down the scope of his 7.62x51 NATO Remington MSR, down at the valley below. He could see the two Atlas insertion points, the barracks in the distance, the winding roads, the two checkpoints and six armed hostiles near the insertion points. Those people, were right now on Mirosburg's hit list. His spotter, First Sergeant Huritar Druderis, laid down to Mirosburg's left, looking down at the valley with his binoculars.

"Ex," Druderis whispered into his radio, signalling Mirosburg. "We're going to focus at Alpha first, there's four foot mobiles, all armed. Two by the fallen tree, taking a smoke, one patrolling near a small dirt road that leads up to Alpha and the fourth near that road slide."

"No problem." Mirosburg replied swiftly. "Just make sure you can hit the other guy taking a smoke when it comes to that."

"Rog, clear to engage. Wind's 2 kilometres to the north. Who are you taking?"

"Rockslide guy. Gimmie a range?"

"250 metres."

"Good."

"Fire, fire, fire." Druderis spoke in a monotone voice as Mirosburg pulled the trigger on the MSR.

A suppressed shot was barely audible as the man, dressed in military fatigues, flew over the rocks. Not a sound could be heard, no alarms were tripped, nothing. Mirosburg and Druderis continued with the other lone soldier, Mirosburg taking the shot and saw the man's helmet fly off as he collapsed. The last two meant that Druderis would have to fire alongside Mirosburg.

"Ready?" Druderis asked Mirosburg as the two looked down the scopes of their weapons. "On you Ex."

Mirosburg fired one shot and took out the smoking soldier on the right as Druderis fired his suppressed MX Rifle and took out the smoking soldier's wingman. The two were dead, and the JTF9 operatives had not yet been discovered. They shifted and found that the men near Insertion Point Bravo were relatively easy. They were isolated. Mirosburg made short work of them as he looked and scanned the area again.

"I think we're clear." Mirosburg smiled to Druderis and fist-bumped him. "AJACOM, this is Reaper 3. Advised, area is clear, ATLAS is clear to land. Repeating, ATLAS is clear to land at Alpha and Bravo. Advised, I see a moderate armour presence at the local barracks'.

BATTLEFIELD ASSAULT, STRATEGIC, TACTICAL AND INNOVATIVE OPERATIONS NODE, ENROUTE TO AO

The Ontorosian helicopters were certainly more comfortable than the Special Aviation Force's Vanguards, but for them the larger enclosed choppers made them feel like big targets. When their chopper touched down at Point Bravo, they quickly and gladly disembarked, with weapons drawn.

The BASTION men were armed and dangerous, prepared for the direct action role. Their kit was a smorgasboard of the most advanced equipment and weapons, the techniques of employing them boiled to a fine art by these warriors, each with at least two or three other special units under their belt.

In this hot environment, breathability mattered. In their Wraith combat fatigues, with a Desert Transitional pattern, they were thankful for it's breathable cotton mix. Their body armour too was designed for it. The two-part Chameleon Combat Helmet, worn without it's usual Face Sock, was noted for being lighter and cooler than any other brain bucket. Their body armour was being kept to a minimum, using the main Torso and Waist portions allowing higher levels of maneuverability and letting in more air. Water canteens and camelbacks were filled to the brim. As the operation was slated to take only a few hours, they had been filled with a vitamin rich mixture, designed to help the human body rehydrate even faster. Seconds counted to the SF trooper, and even his organs had to be made to work better.

New Hayesalian operators worked this mission in 10 man teams. Split into two five man 'bricks' as the Rifle and the Weapons Teams, the New Hayesalians brought along with them several Ripper Mk3 rifles, 7.62mm rifles with a hell of a lot of modular options. The team marskman, noted for wearing his half-ghille suit, had a HK-417 due to that weapon's common use of 7.62mm rounds and interchangeability of accessories, though the sharpshooter in his suit brought a Desert Recon Stealth Recon Scout, a .308 rifle shorter than an M-16 and packing all the punch and accuracy of it's MRAD cousins. It's bullpup design was a real help for the team sharpshooter, Guards Corporal K, who took a personal defence weapon along with him, just in case he had to get close in.

For heavier weapons, the New Hayesalians were packing more than even the most advanced TF-Atlas squads. Their two autoriflemen carried a light machine gun, in the form of the lightweight M240L, with Corporal A in the weapons squad carrying the .308 calibre GD Lightweight MMG. Chief Petty Officer F, the Weapons team leader, carried the Roundshot counter-defilade weapon in addition to his Ripper carbine. The Roundshot fired a specailised grenade, designed to explode over and into targets so that even the most well secured pillbox was vulnerable to BASTION. Finally, the team's rocketman, the burly Lance Corporal O, carried not only his Ripper carbine, but six M83A2 SLADAR disposable rocket launchers easily capable of smashing armoured personnel carriers. Given the environment and known threat, he wasn't the only one. Members of the team who weren't carrying any particularly heavy weapons also carried two apiece, giving BASTION a total of 14 AT or AP rockets. And finally, the squad leader came bearing the team's Wasp AE drone, which worked in addition to their personal Black Hornet drones to give the team an understanding of the combat landscape.

These weapons all fed into a central command computer, known as the 9LAND BMS. Providing combat information on just about everything from translations, to orders, to chemical detection, vital signs and tactical cameras, 9LAND gave the troops the brain to meet the brawn. Clipped to their helmets, panoramic night vision goggles gave a theatrical view of the landscape around. The NH version had been specially designed to overlay infrared video over traditional night vision green, meaning that troops could switch between the two and that the distorted greens of the NVG scopes could be highlighted based on heat- making dismounted troops easier than ever to hunt.

Giving the team a little more confidence, they were wearing the Army's updated BFR boots. Designed to be as good to fit as the Lyran Arms Mamba garrison boots- which, in fairness, they had achieved relatively well- though noticeably heavier they brought the special quality of lessening the impact of "toe popper" landmines, softening the strike of a land mine enough that while the soldier was still about guaranteed to get injured, their injuries could be limited to a nasty dislocation or fracture, and not a full-blown amputation. It was a welcome addition to the wardrobe, though it would never be considered on a long hike.

The BASTION boys had heard from the Ontorisan sniper team, declaring safe the landing zone. Placing their trust in Atlas, the team had gladly dismounted and taken up position with another nation's team, a small theocratic state known as The Cathedral. While their SF were basically newbies in the international sphere, it was obvious they were experts in their usual frogmen and LRRP mission.

BASTION also had it in their mind that New Hayesalia's own Special Aviation Force had birds online, with the fleet of five packing a warehouse's worth of guided Hydra rockets, plus a few Brimstone missiles for those tricky targets. That being said, the SAF had made it very clear that the existence of the Strela-10s was an issue that needed to be solved before they could assist in the CAS mission. That being said, they had made it very clear than any Atlas unit needing evacuation would be welcomed aboard their helicopters, even if it meant flying through fire to get them.

The BASTION troops broke away from the Cathedral team with a nod. They began the hump up the hills and forests to a staging point, from where the two teams had been assigned to observe both the checkpoint and the hostile barracks, in line to attack either one depending on orders from Atlas command. Though they marched, they were eagerly anticipating what was to come.

The three man team of Cobras made their way out of the helicopter and rushed ahead to take point. Limited numbers meant they could help the team with its nighttime, stealth approach. Their main goal was to help the teams avoid armor. They had been dropped off behind a dip in elevation, far enough away that the ADA didn't come into play. Those that would have heard the helicopter had been downgraded by the sniper team.

Reports had come in that there was armor in the barracks. The operators all had the basics of the map in their minds. The fact that armor was in the barracks meant one thing... Avoid the barracks. Of course, they would have to confront armor at some point. But they could take steps to avoid it where possible.

The teams moved through the black desert air. SFC Farnsen nodded to the New Hayesalians under night vision, as they split off.

Vangaziland's Cobras were decked out in their "lightweight" plate carriers and ACHs. A dark tan desert variant of multicam was the pattern of the evening, covering the Vangazi from head to toe. They had MBITR tactical radios on their vests with simple earpieces attached.

They carried new carbines. Pete Farnsen and Don Frazor carried 14.5" barrel HK416s. Mark Emerazi carried the 13" HK417, finally bringing the 7.62 caliber to the Cobra team's standard primary loadout. Each rifle was decked out with an optic, laser, flashlight and vertical grip.

The team carried several useful items. They had a powerful, IR laser used for signaling aircraft. They had a laser range finder to help with ranging targets. The team even still brought compasses and maps, just in case the GPS systems suddenly went down.

Each man carried one frag grenade and one flashbang.

The group made its way across the road and onward towards the complex towards the outlying fields they had seen in the map. They carefully continued to maneuver along with the plan to move around the back row of the barracks tactically.

The Cathedral had in fact deployed for their first Atlas mission. Taking the chopper with the New Hayesalian BASTION team, the Coastal Threat Reconnaisance Group (CTRG) had been rather impressed by the helicopter's pilots, as well as the level of technology being used by their BASTION colleagues. They, like the New Hayesalians, dismounted with speed, hitting the dirt and making a tactical advance to the tree line as the big chopper took off.

These Cathedralites, soldier-sailors as they all bore the Sailor's Cross on their rank insignia and the Anglican Republic Navy patch, were not as well equipped but every bit as eager. They were obviously more focused in the long range and recon role, having their own dedicated 2 man sniper team, with two regular patrols bearing SCAR assault rifles with a HK417 each. Their commander, Lieutenant Massimo Corwin, said a silent prayer as he waved off the New Hayesalian squad.

The Cathedralites had quite purposefully chosen the more dense woodland, with a higher gradient. With the teams wearing Multicams and personal camouflage material they made the graceful advance to a second observation position overlooking the barracks. Part of their duty was their specialisation- watch and report. But if the barracks was hit by airstrikes and fire support, it would be CTRG's job to lead the charge to fully secure the barracks.

SCAR rifles handy, the Cathedral team made their advance, hopefully with God blessing their quest today.

18km NE of Ajamakri | Holiyra
2330 hours | August 19th, 2015

As the Ontorisan chopper touched down, Captain Martin “Rudi” Rüdiger took one last look at the faces of his fellow operators of the Sonderkampfentwicklungsgruppe Koppa-Koppa (named in the usual overcomplicated and meaningless Wankan fashion). The usual anxious/nervous silence of anticipation had set in, but this time around it was more serious, and way darker, than what this team had experienced ever before. It was not that any of them were new to the business, no, these five men and women were amongst the most experienced soldiers Wanka had to offer. Rudi’s eyes stared with mixed feelings at baby-faced Johann “Piranha” Müller, whose usual light-hearted expression and cheeky smile had been replaced by a (to the others) foreign look of complete and utter concentration. The newest Koppa member, he’d replaced PFC Johannes Beer who had been killed on the team’s last mission, a successful kidnapping mission of a Turkish general. Everything had gone perfectly; Alfred “Prinz” von der Heide himself, the squad medic, had thrown the fragmentation grenade which incapacitated the enemy general and together with fellow squadmate, and the only female on the team, Lieutenant Johanna “Weizen” (named after the beer) Holunda escorted their prize out toward the waiting choppers.

The Wankers themselves had suffered casualties during the raid, with six wounded needing to be speedily brought back to base. As they took up more space than on the flight toward the target, several Koppa troops had to sit on the outside benches of the two Little Birds being used as aerial sniper platforms. Rudi and Beer quickly got into an argument- Rudi wanted to get onto the small chopper, knowing that the Little Bird was far more hazardous than the NH-90 to ride in, but Beer insisted to take his place, finally convincing him that he had to be with the rest of the team, especially since Prinz was amongst the wounded.

And an infra-red air-to-air missile later, Beer was dead and Rudi from then on barely managed to get over that fact and even until now, couldn’t get rid of the heavy feeling of guilt. The squad had been together as a unit for two years, and it had hit all four of them pretty hard. However, it was probably the worst time to contemplate the past which really nothing could be done about. But he had no doubt that Beer was on everyone’s mind, one way or another. The last time the second squad/third platoon had been in a chopper on a mission, he had been sitting where Piranha was. Which, perhaps, explained his unusual silence.

”Noch zwei Minuten… bereitmachen!” (“Two minutes to go… ready yourselves!”) murmured Rudi. Weapons and gear were checked in a series of loud clicks. Communications equipment was tested. Rudi, Prinz and Kondor carried the highly reliable silenced STG-S assault rifles as primary armament, Piranha had a GR-9 light machine-gun to provide them with heavier firepower should the need arise and Weizen would provide the anti-armor capability with her modern Panzerfaust RPG. In addition to that and other combat gear (including the usual assortment of combat and navigational gear), they had three days worth of food and water supplies. Their equipment, while not as modern as their ATLAS counterparts, were the best the People’s Republic produced, but it would be their vast experience in the field that Rudi was counting upon to ensure this mission succeeded. The chopper touched down and the five Koppa operators rapidly exited together with the other ATLAS teams.

Atlas-Rangers
En route to Insertion point Alpha
5 minutes to insertion

The team sat silently within the Ontorosian helicopter, very similar to the Kondors Birtonia utilized when transporting men to the battlefield. For this operation, Enrique would be back at base, William Noh, the smallest of the team would be taking his place as demolitions expert, but still would take point when clearing buildings.

Jessica watched as her team continued their usual pre battle rituals, prayer and songs were the foremost while she personally comforted herself with her weapon. Steadily, the team began to whisper Sgt. Mackenzie, building up in strength as final equipment checks were conducted. Metallic clicks as magazines were loaded and bolts locked, flicks of weapon safeties were heard. The helicopter flared its nose up, and began the descent to Insertion Point Alpha.

The Rangers quickly disembarked, weapons at the ready in case of a hint of danger. Following their departure, the aircraft leveled off and exited the AO. Due to the time sensitive nature of the mission at hand it was imperative each team began their taskings immediately. Hustling off towards the south east, into the hills and forests the team moved at a brisk pace, not quite a jog, but neither a walk.

"Cutlass actual to Atlas, en route to objective Delta, over" said John as they moved silently through the tough terrain. The team chose a new call sign, Cutlass, as they decided that Bravo Romeo was both long and boring.

Objective Delta was the southern of the two enemy checkpoints. Their job was to eliminate any enemy presence and rig it with explosives, should QRF attempt to utilize the roads, more than likely the fight would be short, with the expertise of the Rangers combined with a sniper over watch team.

Ranger ETA was another 15 minutes.

Insertion Point Alpha, 2347 Hours, Mission Time: 0:00:01

The helicopter gently and silently descended at Insertion Point Alpha. As Sergeant Nikolai hopped out of the helicopter, he could see the staging area less than a hundred meters away.

For this ATLAS mission, Alpha Group, instead of sending the usual six man team, High Command had decided to combine the two separate sub-units of Alpha into one single squad. This setup, High Command reasoned, gave Alpha double it's normal troops to work with in acting as a rear guard for the advancing soldiers. Sergeant Nikolai, though, had reservations about this. Due to this order being enacted on an extremely short notice, in the final hours before deployment, Nikolai had no time to seriously prepare his troops for this role. Though they had received training for this scenario, Nikolai was afraid that tensions among the men might be exacerbated, and a challenge to his leadership might break down the whole cohesiveness the squad works on in the worst possible time: during battle.

Nikolai turned his attention back to the staging area and began to analyze the situation. From what he's heard, the team from Cathedral were going as the vanguard unit directly to the objective, the WMD site. According to the general battle plan, several other teams were to back them up the in the main assault, while the rest of the forces were split between the left and right flanks, both of which where to maneuver in a pincer movement to take both checkpoint and secure to roads leading to the barracks and WMD site. After that, well.... that's just thinking too far ahead, Nikolai mused. The main goal right now was to take the checkpoints and secure the two roads leading up to the main road, and Alpha Squad was going to follow as the rear guard of the main force pushing up the road and the two flanking forces.

A cry of pain made him turn around. Petro had tripped and fell from the weight of his gear.

"Ow!" he said.

"Not the most graceful one, are you?" Oleg, behind him responded.

Nikolai walked up to them and started an inspection of the staging area. It was near midnight, and due to the need for stealth, everyone was working by flashlight. Several of his men were already fully suited up, while the rest were still getting all their gear in order. Nikolai turned on his headset and set it to broadcast to the Main Comm. Channel. "This is Hussar 1-4 Actual, we are at Alpha and waiting for orders, over."

EDIT: Callsign better?

OOC: Let's slow it down a bit gentlemen, some nations have not made any posts yet.

OML Musketeer, 3 Kilometres South of the Holiyran Coast
Theocracy of Holiyra
2305 Hours
Overall Commander of AJACOM/ATLAS Elements, Lieutenant Colonel Aesir Zami-ta-Potia

"Cutlass actual to Atlas, en route to objective Delta, over"

"Cutlass Actual, this is AJACOM." Zami-ta-Potia managed in his best English, a heavily accented tone. "Advised that you are to hold off on any engagements until I allow it. For now, fire if fired upon. The Holiyrans don't know we're here, so let's try and keep this on the down low."

Zami-ta-Potia then repeated the order over the ATLAS General Channel, enabling it to be heard by all teams. If they wanted to play Rambo, they could play Rambo when millions of lives were not on the line. God he hated the foreign units, they weren't as attentive as the Ontorisan units he was used to commanding.

"I repeat, all callsigns, do not engage Jahmya's forces. As far as I know, no one is in position and we will take casualties if you decide to go Rambo on my operation." Zami-ta-Potia hissed into the radio. "I swear, the first person to fire an unordered shot will be court marshalled by Ontorisan Military Officials."

Insertion Point Alpha, 18 Kilometres North-East of Ajamakri
Theocracy of Holiyra
2305 Hours
SOG Hellspawn, 2nd Detachment, 4th Team "AQUA", 1st Lieutenant Gruy Losuir

The SDD-43 "Clover" touched down as the 4th Team dismounted, securing the area. They saw the handiwork of the sniper team, seeing the collapsed corpses near a tipped over tree, the cigarettes still smoking. Losuir motioned back to Capalumik to move into the woods as they reviewed their objective. They were to push forward, Losuir checking the suppressor on his MX Rifle as he shifted. He arrived at the log, checking the corpses and putting a round into each of the heads before crouching and hoisting his weapon upon his shoulder.

"All Jackal Callsigns," Capalumik began as he ran and crouched beside Losuir. "Advised our objective is the presumed WMD site. Gredrasburg has the explosives I believe?"

"Yeah Cappy." Gredrasburg checked in as the team materialized around Losuir. "Right here, we're set."

Capalumik turned the knob on his radio switch, attached to his vest to the ATLAS General channel, following Zami-ta-Potia's ordering rant. Shaking his head, and leaving a couple of seconds for the message to sink in, Capalumik began to speak.

"All ATLAS units, this is Jackal 2-4 Actual." Capalumik stepped in as he partially stood up. "Advised, our targets right now are to neutralize the checkpoints. Reaper 3 will provide overwatch. Hold off on any assaults on the barracks, if anything, avoid it. That significant armoured presence within it is something we do not need. Contact AJACOM if you need any coordination, out."

Sitting back down, Capalumik tapped Losuir's shoulder, nodding. The team moved out, Losuir moving first as they walked down the hill.

Hostile Forces - Status: Calm, At Ease

"Reptile 2-2 Bravo, I want you to maintain foot patrols along the road between the two checkpoints." Kazir's squadron commander ordered him through the radio as Kazir looked down at his AKS. "I'll send Charlie to relieve you in 30 mikes, out."

The four-man team, consisting of Kazir, the grenadier, Damascus, the Automatic Rifleman, Nazir, the assistant automatic rifleman and Jahali, the fireteam leader, all moved down the dirt road in a column formation, keeping a good distance apart. They were a bit fatigued from their 7-hour patrol, walking up and down the same place over and over again. The troops were bored, and with the fighting mostly happening west, the troops had absolutely nothing to do.

Atlas-Rangers
Near southern checkpoint
Mission time: 00:08

The woods and hilly terrain, combined with loose rocks made the team slow down just a touch. Pausing ever now and then ensuring that they haven't been found by the enemy. This place was different than Ahtroupia, same bullshit heat but this was more intense, must have been the woods. As they stalked through the woods a radio transmission addressed to them came through.

John was about to reply when the same man began speaking on an Atlas wide frequency, yammering on about going Rambo on his op. The team halted where they were, only about 600 meters from the checkpoint, there was good cover and concealment, so as long as they stayed quiet the troops on the road shouldn't see them.

"Don't go all Rambo on us boss" whispered Lionel.

The team chuckles softly in response. John keyed up in his radio again, speaking softly "AJACOM, Cutlass Actual reached objective delta, holding tight, over".

During the short time they were observing the checkpoint they watched several soldiers milling about, smoking, patrolling, eating, generally everything a bored soldier would do. There was a small fire team moving along the road as well, looked like they were moving between the two checkpoints.

"Cutlass actual to Atlas, be advised four man foot patrol on hardball. Advise Attack both checkpoints while they're in the middle over".

And now they wait.

The reinforced Hurti team landed in the second SDD-43 to approach insertion-point Bravo now that the somewhat more delicate Cathedral and Bastion-troopers scoped the place out for the heavy-infantry. Actually, their choopers didn't so much as 'land' in the conventional-sense as simply slow down a bit about five feet from the deck, a maneuver that wasn't entirely appreciated by the more senior members of the team; that's what they get for talking shit to the pilot.

The very moment an armored was response was brought-up in the briefing, Strank and Rosenthal pulled every string they could to get Crompton back on the line for this one; despite being notorious for bringing more tank-shredding, bunker-busting dakka than the usual squad, their main focus would be in finding creative ways to slow-down the RRF. That creativity would stem from Crompton, the former senior officer in charge of Officer Training Camp 3, he was largely responsible for inflicting such a crippling setback to Pudite invasion-plans that to this day the Pudites made sure to make certain concessions whenever a Hurti unit deployed in their sector.

Rosenthal and Strank each policed-up the bodies, recovering their kit for their own use, handing-out any anti-armor munitions they found. Unlike their normal squad-layout, they had replaced their machine-guns with carbines and rocket-launchers to supplement their reinforced allotment of grenade-launchers, rifle-grenades, and light-mortars. So far not much luck, just a few hand-grenades and signal-flares. Useful, but not against what they'd be facing.

Each one also carried a silenced pave-pointer rechambered in .40 S&W (subsonic), a nice little select-fire burp-gun with a double-barreled over-under 12-gauge mounted where most folks in movies like to put a laser-pointer.

The two 3-man teams each followed behind each of New Hayesalia's 5-man teams, ready to provide immediate fecal-matter-extraction from their planned route. This wasn't so much from lack of bravery, as they simply weren't the best camouflaged unit in ATLAS, and did not feel like spooking the enemy garrison until they absolutely had to.

Legatian Imperial Armed Forces
Superiores Negotium, TACUS-II "Triarii"
Theocracy of Holiyra, Insertion Point Bravo
2305 Hours

The situation in Holiyra had more than boiled over. Weapons of mass destruction were never something that could be taken lightly- especially when they were poised against millions of innocents.

And so, Triarii went in.

The helicopter they'd infiltrated with left as quickly as it had came, tilting forward and away to weave to an awaiting amphibious amphibious assault ship that had a contingent of Imperial Marines aboard as an extra measure if things required an additional conventional response- which was what the team was here to stop.

The team wore multi-cam combat uniforms, carrying standard combat vests, silenced rifles, and a few anti-tank munitions in the form of unguided HEAT launchers, anti-tank mines, etc. Some members of the team, notably Capsut, had opted for sub-machine guns in the for of the CWS-4C. Diana had swapped out her sniper for a LDMRS, due to the nature of their operations area.

"Radio silence, people." Pala instructed, his boot digging into the dry, hard ground. The Centurion quickly made his way forward, his unit following him.

"Didn't AJACOM or whatever their name is say we aren't to engage yet?" Aurum inquired quietly, as the team made their way to an overwatch position near the enemy barracks.

"Aye, that he did. That goes for all of you." He nodded, as they came to a stop near a concealed position by the barracks, waiting to be able to proceed.

Since we're entering combat, I like to use a rating system so that you all can understand the quality of the soldiers we're fighting [1 being an armed civilian with no weapons handling training, 10 is a well-trained, veteran Tier 1 operative]. Since the opposition is a "half & half" regiment (half have already fought in battle while the other half are recruits), I strongly recommend that you put a bit of detail in the hostile forces.

The 206th Regiment is a 7. We're a 9 so I think we're good. But expect to take casualties if you rush. The 206th, as easy as they may seem, are not to be pushovers (except at the checkpoints, I'm cool with that).

On an unrelated note: GSU, Jackal is SOG Hellspawn's callsign. I recommend finding a new one in order to avoid confusion.

Joint Task Force 9, 3rd Sniper Team, Lieutenant Yriak "Excalibur" Mirosburg

Mirosburg continued to scan the area with his MSR before he heard the Birtonians call in their position and that they were prepared to strike the southern checkpoint. He flicked the bolt back and pulled out the magazine, placing it beside him since he planned to use it later, and reloaded a fresh magazine before he resumed observing the checkpoint.

"Cutlass, this is Reaper 3," Mirosburg managed in his best English, which probably heavily accented. "I confirm six hostile foot mobiles and an armed UAZ at Checkpoint Bravo along with the team you have just mentioned. I also see two additional UAZs with possibly four passengers each coming up the hill. Stand by for clearance."

"Cutlass," One of the SOG Hellspawn operators whispered in the radio. "Jackal 2-4 is standing by to engage the fireteam. You aim for the UAZ, yes?"

He changed radio channels, to directly contact AJACOM, hoping that they could finally engage the enemies. Zami-ta-Potia was a hardass, but a crafty, strategic planner. He had his reasons sometimes. But this was an opportunity they could not pass up.

"AJACOM, this is Reaper 3," Mirosburg spoke in fast Estonian as he continued to watch the checkpoint, the two UAZs returning from outside stopping, the driver speaking to one of the guards. "We have a significant hostile presence at Checkpoint Bravo. Requesting permission to engage."

The channel was silent before Mirosburg heard a soft sigh. He grinned to himself as he heard Zami-ta-Potia speak after a couple of minutes.

"All ATLAS Callsigns, weapons free." Zami-ta-Potia ordered finally. "You are clear to engage. Your window is six hours. Get in and get out before Jahmya sends reinforcements. Good luck gentlemen, AJACOM out."

SOG Hellspawn, 2nd Detachment, 4th Team "AQUA", 1st Lieutenant Gruy Losuir

Losuir sat crouched, looking at the road as the fireteam, comprised of four men speaking loudly in Holiyriakis, passed by the team. They held their breath, picking their targets in case if they were discovered. Then, Losuir heard the order: Weapons free. You are clear to engage. At that moment, as if they were a single person, the time fired, taking down the four men before opening fire on the checkpoint, Losuir taking out another guard before the troops scattered, the men in the UAZs dismounting. Then Losuir saw it, the 12.7×108mm DShK machine gun, mounted on top of the checkpoint's UAZ. It opened fire, raking the position of the Hellspawn operatives as they fell back, Gredrasburg popping a few HE 203 rounds, not knowing where they landed.

They heard the sound of an MSR as the gunner of the DShK flew over the railing of the machine gun, dead. Another soldier tried getting on but he was shot as soon as he placed his boot on the car. The Holiyran soldiers returned fire, the joint 7.62x45mm and 5.56x39mm rounds pinging off the trees, but missing the spread out Hellspawn forces.

"Cutlass!" Capalumik shouted into his radio. "You good?!"

Hostile Forces - Status: Under Fire, Wary Yet Confident

The 206th Regiment troops had already lost eight men as they returned fire. Lashmira was one of the few men left after the HE 203 rounds had fallen short. He had dismounted from one of the UAZs as the sniper fire took out the machine gunner and the men who was foolish enough to try and mount the gun as well.

Snapping the bolt forward on his 7.62x45mm AKM Assault Rifle, he fired at the position of the assumed hostiles, assuming a posture to assume the recoil of the powerful rifle and the round. He fired multiple, single shots before shifting behind the booth and shifted so that he could fire again. The Holiyrans were assuming a more defensive position as Lashmira's radio screeched to life.

"Reptile 2 Actual!" A shout came over the radio and gunfire. "Be advised we are being engaged by unknown hostile forces at Checkpoint Lemur! Please send additional forces! Out!"

Lashmira peered out again and sent a burst of fire at the last known position of the attackers. But no fire was returned. A cheer went up from the men as they kept their rifles trained on the last known position. They were eager to find out, but no one wanted to do it.

"Weapons free." The command came in loud and clear through Triarii's comms network.

"Atlas, Venator callsigns copy all. Over and out." Pala nodded, and turned to his men.

"New mission directive, ladies. Fuck the silencers." The once silenced rifles and sub machine guns of Triarii became unsilenced, their attachments sliding off.

"Fuck the silencers." The team echoed, enthusiastically.

"Light it up."

7.62, 30-06, .45 ACP, and a hail of other types of munitions was unleashed upon the shabby guards barracks, Pala sweeping his hand as the operators spread out. Virga's MAW/S machine gun, fed by a C-mag, raked the building as the operators worked their way down the hill, preparing to enter the guards barracks.

Atlas-Rangers
Southern Checkpoint
Mission time: 00:10

The Rangers stalked for several more minutes amidst the trees, boulders, and shrubbery of the slope over looking the valley near the checkpoint. Watching the soldiers through their sights, each Ranger grew impatient, their fingers itching to pull the trigger and end the bastards lives down below them. During their waiting a Hellspawn team made their way towards their position, they weren't visible to the naked eye but the battlemap on John's wrist computer pointed them out on the map. Finally, the tension was broken by radio traffic in their earpieces.

The friendly sniper overwatch team had confirmed the enemy presence but reported more coming up the road. A few of the guns swung down the road, searching for the oncoming UAZ's, just as they found them another transmission came through. This time from the nearby Hellspawn operators, straining to communicate clear enough to the Rangers.

The second the words [i]weapons free[i/i] were uttered a flurry of bullets exchanged between the checkpoint, and the hillside near the Rangers, where the Hellspawn team was located. A few far off reports of a sniper rifle were heard in concert with a peppering of grenades, all of this happened immediately before the Rangers opened up on the checkpoint. The teams M-300 mare machine gun was devastating on the enemy soldiers as they were focused on the initial contact.Lionel loaded a white phosphorous grenade into his launcher and sent it flying towards the UAZ's that were still at the gate.

Amidst the flying bullets and screams of the soldiers down below, the Hellspawn operators were heard over the radio.

John looked over where they should be through the trees, "Yeah Roger Reaper, why'd you stop shooting?" laughter was heard between reports of the weapons over the radio as well.

OVERLOOKING THE HOSTILE BARRACKS AND CHECKPOINT SOUTH

The core of the team, being led by the New Hayesalian team, had been set up in three locations. The Vannish, with their HK417 battle rifles, would take up a position giving them excellent potential to pick off targets such as MG nests and personnel behind buildings, as well as providing a 'sniper valley' for dismounted enemy troops approaching from the barracks. The Cathedral's team, god bless 'em, would be a little further down from the Vannish team, and would actually take the leading charge when the time for it came to conquer their target. The New Hayesalians occupied a middle-height position, closer to the checkpoint than the Vannish but not as close as the CTRG. Of course they were taking the assistance of the Hurtian SF team, decked out in heavy armour with armaments to complement it. The combined 16 man auxiliary team were nothing to chuckle at.

At the holding area, the New Hayesalians formed two lines of five, the rifle squad advancing just ahead of the weapons. As the Legatian team made the dangerous descent on one of the main checkpoints, the New Hayesalians opened fire on the barracks. As the centre of gravity for the enemy, suppressing it's deployments were a vital aspect of the security of the task force.

The rifle team made precision shots. Individuals rushing between cars and armoured vehicles were their targets, though at this distance their 7.62mm fire served mostly as effective suppressive fire. Their designated marksman, armed with an HK-417 like the Vannish operators, was most effective, taking single shots against the obviously veteran enemy force. They moved with force and with experience- getting a bead on them was very difficult to say the least.

For the weapons team, things were a bit different. The team's sniper scrolled across windows and openings with his Stealth Recon Scout, ready to send a .308 round into the head of a sniper or MG team. This was important- the team's rocketeer needed the confidence to launch a SLADAR without a round pinging off his helmet or around his brain. Additionally, the medium machine gun had to be kept moving as it was reloaded- while the BASTION trooper had been trained to do that alone, it did take a little longer once a belt of 150 .308 rounds went downrange. Additionally, the Roundshot counter-defilade weapon would serve to smash any mortar or MG positions, using it's airburst grenades. This didn't count the Hurtian element, their weapon's capabilities not even known by the New Hayesalians.

As the fire was laid down, ten New Hayesalian guns and their explosives sent flashes of light and clouds of dust up around the barracks. Even as the Vannish and Cathedral troops joined them, bringing their gun line to an impressive 29, they remained ultra-alert that it would only take a few mistakes to make them pay with their lives.

The rocketman stood for the first time in the engagement. One of the enemy's anti-aircraft tanks had been located, two crewmen rushing to it in the hope to escape. As he drew one of the SLADARs from his back, pressing the button to begin the chemical reaction to cool the IR seeker, thereby making it operable in the guided mode. Clear backblast!

The rocket engaged, blasting out the rear of the tube and accelerating to maximum speed and beginning it's vertical trajectory. The New Hayesalian then threw away the tube, it's single shot fired and disposed of. Still plenty of shots left as the team's commander, Captain Q, watched through his scope for the fall of shot.

Hit made, and a radio call was placed.

KILOMETERS AWAY

"SAF 1 this is BASTION 1, CARAMEL, CARAMEL CARAMEL; I SAY AGAIN, CARAMEL, CARAMEL, CARAMEL, over.

Inside their five Vanguard helicopters - Vengeance, Minotaur, Knocker, Salvo and George- the New Hayesalian special aviators placed down their weapons. Parked in a small canyon, each helicopter looking out with their pilots scanning the horizons with Ripper Mk3 carbines waiting for the call.

"BASTION 1, SAF 1, acknowledged, over."

"BASTION out."

The crews clipped themselves in, shutting their armoured doors and starting their choppers up again. Each chopper brought a myriad of weapons. Vengeance and Minotaur were armed with the advanced Hydra rocket pods, making strafing runs the name of the game. In the case of Knocker and Salvo, three Brimstone guided missiles and a heavy machine gun pod provided the taskforce with precision accuracy and additional air cover. For George, emergency winches and exfil gear sat underneath light machine gun pods firing 7.62mm ammunition, but if a team was in need they could be literally yanked from danger.

As the flight powered up, ascending only a few metres in the depth of night before moving forth and tracking the ground below in formation they made further radio calls. All units were asked to watch for targets, and to make anti-air threats their primary priority targets.

The SAF would be on station in five minutes, giving air support to the team, despite the threat of anti-air that most helicopter crews simply couldn't handle.

Frazor held up the Cobras at a spot of high elevation looking down at the scene as soon as he found out the team planned to ambush these barracks. As far as he was concerned, the WMDs were more of a priority. This meant keeping things silent.

The Cobras had been trying to sneakily lead the teams past the areas, but were held up when a unit spotted a checkpoint. It became apparent that a firefight was unavoidable. And sure enough, here they were in the middle of a shootout.

Despite rumors, the Cobras were not all equipped with the HK417. Frazier and Farnsen both carried the 5.56 HK416. The three of them were carrying the short-barreled carbine variant of their weapons, which was suitable for this mid range engagement.

The Vangazi were only taking potshots, conserving ammo and trying not to make too much noise. At this point, the firefight was a train that was in danger of spinning out of control.

Maybe the team should have taken the Vangazi's early hint and tried to sneak past the barracks, complelety ignoring those tanks, in favor of getting to the site and disabling the WMDs... Then worry about survival and evac routes and tanks after, the whole selfless service thing.

No. People brought rocket launchers and they'd be absolutely damned if they didn't go to use straight away....

But the counterpoint was that if the firefight had gotten too loud, word would probably have gotten to the tanks and they'd stop the team beforehand. Now whether or not there were enough silenced weapons at the time to neutralize that checkpoint threat remains to be seen. Maybe this was just the opportune time to take out the nearby tanks, possibly hoping that reinforcements would be asleep or not fueled up yet.

At this point, with as loud as the fighting had gotten and with people popping shots off at people running into vehicles with radios, sneaking around would probably not be much of an option anymore.

Emerazi had an ear open for the helicopters, monitoring the radio especially closely. He figured BASTION had the lead on them, but he was standing by if they needed a secondary observer from their line of fire. Mark was also calling out what he saw from his position.

In short, the Vangazi were trying to keep fire accurate, to a minimum and were acting just as much as an observation team.

0.6 km North of Southern Checkpoint, Mission Time: 00:00:23
"Activity near the Southern Checkpoint. A group of friendlies are opening fire on then Southern Barracks." Viktor announced in a quiet voice while he adjusted his sniper rifle.

Nikolai nodded. "I've been on ATLAS main channel, and we got an order to fire. Not really applicable to us."

Nikolai and his squad of six men were on a hill directly across from the South Checkpoint attack force, that is the northern one. Their goal was to assume control of a hill between the two checkpoints that allowed for excellent positions to observe and fire upon and hostile forces coming down the roads. Radio coordination between Nikolai and the leader of JTF-9 sniper team had confirmed that there were only a few patrols, as far as they could see, in the hills, and that they could be easily eliminated as long as they did not make any serious mistakes. Nikolai made an ironic smile at the word, as he saw the TF ATLAS forces brazenly attack the soldiers at the checkpoint.

Nikolai switched his radio to his squad's channel. "Hussar 1-5 Actual, are you in position?"

Mikhail replied, in a low whisper, "Negative, Hussar 1-4 Actual, we are en route to Northern Checkpoint. Encountered and avoided two enemy foot patrols, one more in our sights. Over." Mikhail was the leader of the other half of his squad (they had split up a while back) and was tasked going to the north barracks to support a TF ATLAS assault and do general reconnaissance. One leg of his trip took him straight into the path of the enemy patrol path , and he took a risky gamble by skirting around the two that had gotten too close to him, and possibly alerting the enemy.

"Understood, Hussar 1-5 Actual. We will keep ourselves alert an-"

A streak of light coming from the hills across from them interrupted Nikolai. Moments later, a plume of smoke started rising from the checkpoint.

"I think they just tried to use a missile." Viktor whispered. Suddenly, a flash of light and a low rumble confirmed his theory. A larger plume of smoke obscured their view, and flames started to glow inside it.

"This is Hussar 1-2 Actual. We've got activity near the barracks.", a voice announced a minute later over the radio. Nikolai recognized the voice as Oleg, who was with two other of his men farther up the road. "It seems like the enemy has been alerted to our presence."

Nikolai cursed to himself. "You heard the explosion too?"

"Affirmative."

"Fall back and regroup. That means you too, Mikhail. Understood?", ordered Nikolai, after switching to the squad radio channel.

"Roger that." was heard simultaneously from both groups.

The New Hayesalian BASTION team was using heavy weapons already- that hadn't been popular with all the teams. From their point of view they could understand why- enough chaos down where the enemy stood might cause them to become confused, or even surrender. And the fact that anti-aircraft tanks were being taken out by the BASTION rocketeer. Now they awaited the New Hayesalian helicopters, still taking plenty of shots with their SCAR assault rifles and the team's sniper section to eliminate key targets at the barracks. They were, after all, the hardest target, so more lead going downrange was going to help.

The Coastal Threat Reconnaisace Group began moving, mlaterally to give them a view into a part of the base behind a main barrack building. The Cathedral troops didn't have an organic machine gun team- instead relying on effective movement and the covering fire of the other teams nearby. The two fire teams could move seperate- their designs were identical. As one team moved aside, the next covered for them. They are light infantry, after all!

They moved and awaited orders. Perhaps after a couple of airstrikes, the barracks would be rushed and cleared by the various teams. Not that the CTRG would do it alone.

Theocracy of Holiyra
2310 Hours
SOG Hellspawn, 2nd Detachment, 4th Team "AQUA", 1st Lieutenant Gruy Losuir

The Hellspawn operatives open fire again, this time on the booth, following the machine gun fire from the Rangers. The suppressed shots were heard before the checkpoint's gunfire died down. Losuir looked at the checkpoint through his PISKAK Scope before shifting beside Capalumik. He silently motioned for himself and Ruskark to check out the checkpoint. Capalumik nodded as the two moved up, quickly speaking in soft voices into their radios.

"Cutlass, hold fire, we're moving in." Losuir spoke in fluent English as he ran up to the bullet-riddled booth, blood stains already apparent from a distance away.

The bodies surrounding the checkpoint, if Losuir's math was right, should add up to twenty men. He could easily count twelve right away, but the men who dismounted he couldn't see.

"Hold up Jackal," The JTF9 sniper spoke in Estonian as he heard a suppressed shot then a repulsive gurgling as he turned the corner of the side of the booth facing away from the rangers. "Got him."

A young man, who couldn't have been older than 23, was leaning against the siding of the cheap booth, gripping his throat as his body went limp. A kid, who had been firing at them, was dead. Better him than Losuir or any of the ATLAS operatives. Ruskark tapped Losuir's shoulder as he entered the booth before coming out and moved to the two UAZs. Bodies littered the ground as Ruskark activated his radio.

"AJACOM, We're clear, the Southern Checkpoint is clear." Ruskark radioed AJACOM, and waited for a reply.

"All callsigns, this is AJACOM." Zami-ta-Potia's voice could be heard as he spoke. "The Southern Checkpoint has been neutralized. Move to eliminate the barracks then the WMD Site. Advised we still have Air Combat Support still on standby, out."

Reloading his MX Rifle, Losuir waved in the direction where the machine gun fire had come from. He had no idea whether if they were the rangers or not, but he hoped they would understand. He then pointed up the road, and then flung his finger twice, meaning to double time before he re-entered the woods. Hellspawn began to move, quickly as they tracked any potential prey.

The Barracks
Hostile Forces - Status: On Alert

The explosions and gunfire in the distance had alerted the barracks. Already, 206th forces were grabbing their rifles and suiting up. Hayim was one of these soldiers as he pushed a magazine into his AK-63 Assault Rifle. His fireteam were already outside, so he was late. It wasn't good, but whatever. They have heard that two BMP-2s had already been sent off outside along with a platoon of troops to respond to the southern checkpoint.

"Hayim!" Hayim turned to see his team leader. "If you don't fucking hurry up, I'll put a round into your knee!"

Hayim complied, grabbing three other magazines and rushing outside, pushing them into his vest's pockets. He adjusted his helmet before he met up with his team.

"We're heading to the crossroads south-west of here." Hayim's leader told the team as he pointed down the dirt road. "We have unknown forces acting upon us, and they some how got past our sentries. Shit ain't looking good, so keep on your toes. If you see something move and it's not friendly, shoot it."

Atlas-Rangers
Southern Checkpoint
Mission time: 00:30

Several magazines of 5.56mm and a belt of 7.62 bullets later, the Rangers either suppressed or killed everything at the checkpoint, with the assistance of friendly forces of course. Cease fire was heard over the radio as the Hellspawn teamed moved in to secure the area. Nearby, soldiers emerged from the brush, they were clearing the checkpoint quickly and methodically, when they suddenly halted and a far off shot was heard. After more movement they had cleared their objective and moved north again along the road in the woods.

John stood up and hustled down the small hill to the scene of the carnage that just occurred, with his team in tow. Bodies and parts of bodies were everywhere, the UAZ's still smoldering from the phosphorous that hit them earlier. Lionel saw a handful of grenades on one of the dead soldiers and pocketed them, thinking they would come in use later on. After pilfering some more munitions, they crossed the road and hiked up the mountain a short ways before changing direction and heading east.

"Jackal, Cutlass, we'll be on approach to your four o clock" mentioned John as he deftly navigated the slope.

Through some of the trees, from their vantage point, they could see the roads and a portion of the barracks off in the distance. As they moved north, clouds of dust could be seen, which made John key up again.

"Atlas, Cutlass, be advised possible vehicles moving from barracks, out. "

Ajamakri Airfield: Mission Time: 00.025
War. Some things never change about war. Alexi thought to herself as she and her band of mercenaries and rebels ran into an awaiting Mi-24, it's tail-rotors just beginning to show signs of life. A mere 90 seconds ago they'd received word of contact with suspected partisan activity at one of the nearby checkpoints, followed by a similar report at a larger garrison. It didn't take a combat-veteran to know this was part of something big.

Alexi Montoya and Tsu Li had taken their hard-earned millions and started a new-ish life as private guns-for-hire, and enjoyed a certain degree of anonymity thanks to the MBSA gratefully providing her with a new identity as Marlene Abdelkadar; the irony of a Christian mercenary hiding herself as a Muslim terrorist was not lost upon her, as clearly the folks over in Mokastana had an opium-twisted sense of humor. Which did not take long for Tsu to snag a few de-serialed ex-Mokastani Mi-24s and hauk their services to the Holiyran warlords, where Alexi's nearly inhumane emphasis on speed of decisive action had whipped some of their men into top-notch soldiers.

Within the next 90 seconds, the Mi-24 pitched its tail up, nosed hard into the ground, and began an aggressive takeoff-roll, soon to be followed by two others. The soldiers in her stick had barely enough time to strap themselves in, let alone actually put-on their own gear. The pilot quickly warned them that they'd be two minutes from the combat-zone, with an additional 30 seconds until reaching their LZ; if there still was one to land upon. At word of this, many of the men franticly went about putting on their kit and performing one last function-check of their rifles.

Marlene's kit was generally exactly the same as from her brief tour in Mokastana, almost completely betraying her false identity as a pious Muslim freedom-fighter. One of the rookies in her stick got the wrong impression of this Lifchik-wearing commander and gave her a playful slap on the ass, only to quickly find himself keel-hauled out of the moving Hind, a crumpled mess on the tarmac. Over the radio she explained to the base-commander: "We don't need people like him on this mission, scoop him up and give him latrine-detail once he wakes up."

Holiyran Rebel Garrison: Mission Time: 00.29
The Hurti unit stayed ominously calm and quiet at first, only sending a pair of troopers (Foyt and Thomspon, with 23mm HV grenade-launchers) forwards as the rest remained behind the hillside and readied mortar-rounds. Calmly, they picked-out observation-towers, radar-huts, and otherwise harassed any troops marshaling towards the motor-pool. They'd seen a few jump into nearby armored vehicles; not enough to fully man any of them very effectively so far, judging by their uncoordinated return-fire.

However, as return-fire from the motor-pool intensified, Crompton gave the order to saturate the area with willie-petes from their mortars... then bring-forward their rocketeers to deal with anything that managed to survive the cloud that burned and tried to make for a breakthrough.

Atlas-Rangers
Nearing Barracks
Mission time: 00:38

The short distance from the checkpoint to the barracks complex was compounded by a multitude of reasons. Firstly, there was the hills the team had to sprint up, coupled with several sections of heavy wood and loose rocks. Next, there was the fact that even though the enemy was aware they were under attack, it seemed obvious that they shouldn't broadcast their location until it was time to strike again. They had been just a little behind the Ontorisan team, but now lost visual sight of them through the growth along the ridges. As they got closer, the sounds of battle echoed through the valley, indicating the dust was in fact smoke they saw earlier.

The four of them lined up across the road from the barracks in the tree line. John brought his wrist up and opened his battlemap on his wrist, but due to the hilly surroundings it wasn't updating as quick as it should, it still showed the Ontorisan team back at the checkpoint. He sighed and looked down the line. Jess was aiming towards the enemy while Lionel shoved the remainder of his MRE in his face, though sometimes they didn't look the part, these were some of the best operators he'd ever known, a couple explosions brought him back to the present.

"Don't fire yet, keep your sights trained on them" said John, over the internal Comms of the squad, straining to see where the fighting was happening down there. It appeared that mortars were harassing enemy positions, with relative accuracy, indicating that a friendly team was nearby. However due to their electronics not functioning correctly, he would have to rely on communications from the other groups directly.

"Atlas, Cutlass, be advised we are just south of the barracks. Break, electronics are down, cannot find position of friendlies, over" John said quickly into the microphone, getting the information out as quickly as possible before the enemy sighted them was of the utmost importance.

Groups of soldiers were running around the complex as more mortar shells came in, sending smoke and burning white phosphorous across the motor pool. The few unfortunate souls who were starting up their vehicles were being incinerated, slowly, alive. Soon after the screams pierced the thick curtain of smoke rising up the valley, being carried by the wind, the team quietly listened to the distant thump of mortars, screams of the dying, and explosions, the crescendo of death.

I think you might have misread the entire situation entirely. We're hostile to all factions of the Holiyra, government and rebels. Also, I dunno where you landed but if you landed at either insertion points, it would've taken like 5-10 minutes to get there.

Also guys, it's 2320 hours, follow the time I post. It's not midnight yet.

Near the 206th Barracks, 18 Kilometres North-East of Ajamakri
Theocracy of Holiyra
2320 Hours
SOG Hellspawn, 2nd Detachment, 4th Team "AQUA", 1st Lieutenant Gruy Losuir

Losuir saw the white phosphorus hit the barracks. Although the mortar rounds appeared to be doing damage to the lightly armoured vehicles and the "soft" targets who weren't mounted in the vehicles, a few of the BMP-2 IFVs managed to get out along with a BTR-60, who was definitely armed with a squadron of men. Motioning to Gredrasburg to push up to the tree line with his Projectile Firing Anti-Tank Rocket (PFATR) Anti-Tank 86mm Rocket Launcher, the operative fired into one of the three BMP-2s' side, disabling it and sending a shockwave circling the other vehicles. Gredrasburg pulled back immediately as Losuir heard Capalumik tapping his radio.

"AJACOM, this is Jackal 2-4 Actual. I'm requesting a CRUCIFIX Strike on the following coordinates: 1,0,6,3,7,2. Confirmed hostile armoured presence in the area." Capalumik held position for a bit, motioning for the team to pull back a bit as boots could be heard touching the ground. "Cutlass, you still there? I could use some support fire right now."

A few stragglers from the Barracks could be seen as Capalumik nodded for Hellspawn to engage. Losuir raised his suppressed MX Rifle and squeezed the trigger and put down two of the Holiyran soldiers before the others dashed for cover, returning fire.

The Barracks
Hostile Forces - Status: Engaging Targets

Hayim had been lucky. Out of all of the troops who had basically been vaporized during the mortar strike, he had survived along with a few other troops. The radio was going crazy as Hayim breathed into a gasmask, something he had put on during the panic as the troops found cover soon after they came under fire. UAZs, BMPs and BTR-60s were in flames as bodies littered the ground. 5.56 rounds pinged all over the place as the troops fired wildly in any direction fire came from.

"All callsigns! All callsigns!" A voice in Arabic came over the radio. "This is Reptile 2-1! Be advised! We're under fire from unknown contacts! Requesting immediate support from any local units!"

"Reptile 2-1, this is Bumblebee 7! We're detaching two companies to your position along with a small armoured unit! We'll help out!" The reply came as Hayim looked over at the few men left from the company that had been posted to defend this position.

Strela AA Position (Unknown Position for Atlas)
Hostile Forces - Status: Alert, Detecting Hostiles

Lieutenant Rajis al-Koiyam looked out at the burning debris in the valley before one of the operators of the Strela Anti-Aircraft Vehicles shouted to him. Apparently, they had "pinged" something oncoming in the air. Before that, he had seen multiple helicopters drop in, but that was when the Strelas were being moved to this overwatch position. He snapped back before motioning the Strelas to prepare themselves.

"Lock on!" al-Koiyam screamed out loud before he saw them, unidentified helicopters circling the valley. "Fire at will!"

Six of the fifteen Strelas fired two of their 9M333 Surface-to-Air Missiles towards the helicopters in the distance, circling the valley. In total, al-Koiyam estimated they had fired twelve missiles, unless if his mathematics was incorrect.

"Preparations!" He called back again as he motioned for the next group of six Strelas to move forward and prepare to fire if the previous twelve shots missed.

341 Meters East from Barracks, 2321 hours, Mission Time 0:00:39

Nikolai watched from his binoculars as the battle raged below him. After he gave his orders to regroup, the two teams had started to move towards the back of the hill, towards friendly territory. But Mikhail, noticing the absence of enemy patrols, decided to look around a bit. What he reported next took Nikolai by complete surprise. "The enemy foot patrols are retreating. Northern Checkpoint has been completely abandoned. They are taking up positions at the fork in the road."

"Alright, new plan. We go west, towards the Barracks, and fire at them. The others need a clear path towards the barracks.", he had said.

The troops went back in the direction the came from, and after two to three minutes of running without incident, they met up at the front of the hill. Below them, a large group of troops spread out across the road laid in wait.

Nikolai took careful aim with his gun, and the rest of the team did the same. "Burst shots at first. Then, if they get too feisty, let loose on automatic." he said.

The soldiers, at first, were confused by the bullets raining down from above. "I thought the enemy was over there," one said. "No, we're being attacked from above!" The enemy soldiers started to move away in a slow mass, and Nikolai said, over the gunfire, "Auto!"

The enemies started falling down in waves, while the rest only ran faster. One, Nikolai thought, as he saw a bullet hit a running soldier. Two, he thought as another man, who was too hesitant to run with the crowd, went down, clutching his gut. Three.... he thought as one more bullet hit a soldier, a mere boy no less than eighteen, who fell and yelled in pain. He rolled over, grabbing his chest and moaning like a wounded animal, pleading in some foreign language to his retreating comrades. Nikolai's jaw twitched slightly, and he released the trigger of his gun. He slowly aimed it at the boy, looked him dead in the eyes, and shot him one time in the head. As the boy convulsed, and then relaxed, Nikolai slowly saw the life come out of the boy's pained eyes, to be replaced by a glassy, warm, dead expression. Viktor, next to him, looked at him questioningly, but Nikolai's response was to continue firing.

An explosion pulled Nikolai out of his memories and back to the battle. The Hurtians had set up an artillery position, and were saturating the area with mortar. He focused his binoculars on the Southern Checkpoint, which was empty save for the ATLAS forces that had killed everyone in it. A massive cloud of smoke covered the barracks, most of them from the WP rounds that the Hurtians had fired. A fleet of helicopters, sent by New Hayesalia, provided air support for the ATLAS forces. A small group of.... what were they.....oh right, Birtonians, were entering the Southern part Barracks. The foot patrols they had fired on earlier had disappeared, most likely to regroup inside their base.

Meanwhile, he could see that the force that had taken the barracks were marching up the road, continuing their steady, victorious march, stepping over the bodies and blood of their fallen enemies, getting closer to the gates of the Barracks. The steady drone of helicopter rotors was heard getting closer to them, the helicopters themselves still behind them. It all seemed so dreamlike, so impossible..... so easy..... the helicopters were drifting through the air, the troops marching down the road, laughter, faint yet loud, coming from below. The flashes muzzles, the screams of the wounded, and the explosions of mortar combined to make one disorienting wave of blood and hell and.... wait..... what was that light? And what was that roar? Nikolai looked in disbelief as the distant roar of anti-aircraft missiles pulled him back to the battle. He could see the helicopters, which had been dancing above the barracks like graceful birds of prey, now frantically trying to evade the missiles. Though the other four were lucky, one helicopter was not. It was much too slow, burdened by some unknown heavy cargo, and could not escaped the arrow of the hunter, could not escaped the missiles. He saw it get hit in two separate places, the tail and the rotor. The graceful bird of prey, it's wing crippled by the arrow, fell like a stone. The helicopter caught fire, and the soldiers inside tried to bail. But the searing heat had roasted them alive, they were going much too fast, and they were too high up. The helicopter crashed into the side of a hill behind the barracks, and tumbled down into the smoke filled valley.

Alpha Group stood there, shocked, for several seconds as they realized what happened. "They didn't tell us about Anti-Aircraft positions!" Alexander exclaimed.

"Keep your voice down." Boris warned.

Nikolai held up a hand, and the group fell silent. "All ATLAS callsigns, this is Hussar 1-2 Actual, we have a AA position.... on the top of the hill, right behind the barracks. One helicopter has been hit, all men inside are assumed KIA. Over."

"We got some enemy reinforcements on the hill." Mikhail whispered.

Nikolai looked at where Mikhail was pointing, and there was indeed small clumps of soldiers moving down the hill. Slowly, Nikolai's illusion of victory was destroyed, and he could see a long bloody battle was going to be ahead of them, unless they went to the WMD site immediately before the troops could recover.

"ATLAS, this is Hussar 1-2 Actual. We have spotted enemy reinforcements coming over the hill. We are currently preparing to move around the barracks towards the objective. Over."

Atlas-Rangers
South of enemy Barracks
Local time: 23:20 hours
Mission Time: 00:40

John viewed the scene of death transpire before him. As the smoke from the mortars cleared it set the scene for a rather grisly show, trucks with men still writhing and burning, others half cooked crawling around screaming pitifully. Suddenly from close by, a rocket flew out from under cover and penetrated into one of the armored vehicles that escaped a fiery death. Following that the Ontorosian team piped up over the radio, requesting fire support, John figured it must've been Jackal that fired the rocket.

"Rog, Jackal, well cover you" said John over the radio, smooth and calm.

The teams M-300 general purpose machine gun twitched as the ammunition belt was locked into place. A squeeze of the trigger and bullets were flying out onto the buildings and open areas of the barracks complex. Rifles began chattering, engaging targets of opportunity and a 40mm high explosive grenade flung out from the teams position, slamming into one of the buildings spraying debris.

"Jackal, Cutlass, you need more or can we move?" Asked John in between shots from his rifle.
