Up There, comedy where the afterlife is run exactly like a Jobcentre, complete with assessments. Stars Burn Gorman who should get more roles, he has such a fantastic hangdog deadpan face. I thought it was brilliant, very original, though it might be incomprehensible to anyone not from the UK.

Hotel Transylvania. Pretty fun and funny, looking forward to the sequel. Persuaded me to give Monster high a second chance.

Human hating bit was a bit odd, considering that most of the monsters were human once or are part human. That seems to happen a lot (Monster high, Hotel transylvania, Monster 500). Maybe I'm taking this too seriously. :ugeek:

I agree with you about Burn Gorman being an underrated actor. I've liked his work in the stuff I've seen, and seems to have a good range as far as the roles he can pull off too (going from heroic on Torchwood to one of the most chilling villains in the 2014-2015 TV season on Forever).

Just watched the new Fantastic Four movie, clearly the least impressive superhero movie I've ever watched in my life. The movie has no heart at all; the narrative is clearly rushed, the character development is close to nonexistent and the relationship between the main characters seem to be very superficial ("fake" would be a better word, perhaps) and not touching at all, giving me no reason and no desire whatsoever to sympathize with anyone in this movie, and the final showdown with the villain is too short and boring, has no memorable moments at all, and is ultimately anti-climactic. The acting is good, but regrettably wasted on a dull, uninspiring motion picture.

Takers, it was rubbish. Might have made a decent mission for GTA, but not enough for a film. Too many clichés, one dimensional characters, Chris Brown and Hayden Christiensen are as annoying as usual.

Maximum Overdrive, a 1986 movie directed (!) by Stephen King, who is actually not a bad filmmaker (the writing is, as expected, pretty good too). It's a pretty neat concept for a horror movie -- aliens take over machines and make them try to kill us, leading to massive amounts of vehicular mayhem -- and some typical only-Stephen-King-would-think-of-that scenes are in evidence as well. Not everything about has held up perfectly 29 years later, but for what it is, it's pretty awesome. 9/10

Pitch Perfect 2 on Friday - enjoyed it, but not quite as much as the first one - 7/10

Kingsman: The Secret Service on Saturday - good, solid action movie with plenty of tongue in cheek moments that work (and a few that don't) - 7/10

Zero Dark Thirty, rather good because they let the story carry the film rather than big names, action set pieces, cgi, or the sound track.

Aliens and Jaws, two of the greatest monster films ever committed to celluloid. I've loved them since I was a kid and this time around I really noticed how little you actually saw the creatures (xenomorph and shark respectively) on film. This was a weird transitional moment for movies when technology was good enough to provide the audience with excellent money shots (the shark jumping out of the water, the alien crawling out of the walls), but prolonged exposure of the creature would expose them as the fake-looking props that they were. So the film-makers had to be more creative, suggesting more than they showed sometimes, and , imho, this resulted in having to build more suspense, because you couldn't just rely on a special effect to wow the audience. It's telling that these movies still hold up after several decades, while so many flavor-of-the-month, state-of-the-art CGI epics have fallen by the wayside.

1 what happened to mc ren and yella second half
2 2pac cameo was just an excuse to play a 2pac song
3 no mention of eazy and dre beef
4 eazy is sick so let's make him cough in every scene
5 SO MANY CLOSEUPS ITS LIKE EVERY SINGLE SHOT

Responses:

1. In real life Yella and Ren both faded out the picture, besides, there can only be so many protaganists. I thought that the movie worked out VERY well dividing equal time to the big 3 of the group.

But yes, it did seem like the movie was about Eazy more than anyone, however, i still think that it was very well done protagonist wise and adding two more to the mix would have made the lengthy film way longer.

2. I thought that the cameo's were kind of annoying, however, they seemed to be very popular. Besides, as someone from the Bay, I was kind of stoked. It just goes to show how many artistic acts have their roots based in the NWA.

3. Kind of ties back in with point 1, there is just so much to cover. As Ice Cube said, if they wanted to tell all the stories, then they would have to do three separate movies. However, you are right, the Eazy-Dre beef is kind of HUGE. More time on that and less on Suge Knight?

4. Lol, true, it was a bit ridiculous. However, remember that his wife part wrote Eazy's part, and she is a big AIDS advocate nowadays. Maybe a message?: The warning signs are there. IDK. Just him looking more and more like shit was enough for me.

5. Didn't particularly notice more than usual.

Other opinions:

6. The scenes are so fucking memorable. The bus scene near the beginning with the Bloods coming onto the bus, fucking classic, fucking scared me. Cube breaking everything in the Priority Records guy's office. Even the opening scene with the broken in drug den. And the fucking Detroit concert scene. It's freaking crazy.

7. The
Bye Felicia line.
The "they bought them" lines. They were really well done.

8. Acting, Little Ice Cube FUCKING KILLED THE ROLE. I could have sworn that that was Cube himself.
Snoop's actor looks NOTHING like Snoop, but his mannerisms and voice were on point.
Eazy's actor I was disappointed. Part of Eazy's charm was his trademark high-pitch voice. It just didn't feel like him without the voice, nor did he particularly look like Eazy.
Dre's actor was alright.
Suge Knight's character I thought played his shit hella well. I was scared of him. I can't tell if it is acting or a well-written antagonist role.
Jerry Keller was pretty funny as well, although his scene with Eazy at the end was pretty weird, and his repeated line threw me off.

9. Issue I see, as mentioned before, they are trying to cover WAY TOO MUCH. They went from 88 to 95, 7 of Hip-Hop's most transformative years, in 2 hours. During the movie, it annoyed me, but in hindsight, I see why it needed to be done.

10. I liked most of the cop actors. The Detroit Cops and the cops outside of the studio were great. This movie is though, very one-sided about police.

11. I liked that it showed that none of them were saints. They weren't. They were just guys who loved rap music (the scene with Dre just in his room listening to music was surprisingly very pleasant and reassuring despite being a very minor thing) and had a story to tell the world. However, as many have pointed out, NO MENTION OF DEE BARNES WHATSOEVER

12. I guess the LA Riots aren't huge in the history of the NWA (just a culmination of everything that they were rapping about), but maybe some better footage than just a Blood and Crip holding bandanas together?

13. Loved the scene when they were listening to No Vaseline. Great stuff.

Overall, great movie, will watch again.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Good enough that I don't mind them making more, but there've been better entries in the franchise. Still, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie's debut (as far as I know, anyway) as a director shows promise... he gets all the technical stuff like camera angles and such right, gets good -- in some cases great -- performances out of his actors, and keeps the pace moving at a decent clip despite the dense plot. MI III is probably still the best in the series, but this one's worth a watch. 9/10

Rewatched Trance, the plot is so complicated that it really benefits from watching twice.

Also Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll which I really enjoyed. Not usually a fan of biopics, particularly music industry biopics, but a great one if you know who Ian Dury was. Andy Serkis is uncanny in the role.
