The Hunt for the Samurai Who smells of Roses!
A VanRPTM Production

The camera falls onto a rolling plain where wind blows across it sending grass into air.

Silverfish lugs his Tetsubo over his shoulder and looks over towards a hill.

Kei Tachibana cocks her head sideways and smiles as the camera turns to be behind her as she walks up some stairs.

The camera outpaces her and catches Silverblade standing on the corner of a tiled roof which he promptly jumps off of into a city.

Keito Nagase looks up and sees the ninja overhead as he towers over everyone in the street.

The camera races forward and sees Kaori praying at an ancient shrine, head down eyes closed.

The camera slides over to Minoru Ichikawa as he looks up to a destroyed castle, only for the camera to rush up the side of the ruins to get a close up with The Samurai who smells of Roses' Mask.

Let the hunt begin

Rose petals and snowflakes fell around Lord Kasa in the night sky. He looks up, and sees Fuujin Castle in flames. All around him, screams can be heard amounts the burning wood and snapping bubbles of air in between the logs. The fire sizzles as it burns just as fast as the snow puts it out, all in a rose petal covered backdrop. All of what he had made, all of what he had known, gone in instants. He got up, and raced into the eastern reception room. He tightened his back up against the wall and attempted to hide from his impending doom. It was too late. He felt a searing pain, and looked down only to find a katana through his chest.

Lady Kasa, his wife, saw this act. She was running away herself when she saw the red faced demon stab something through the wall. In a moment of terrible judgement. She raced forward to see what happened. The demon raced away right past her. In a split moment, Lady Kasa smelt a strong wave of rose petals, as she kept on going. She turned, and saw Lord Kasa in a bloodied mess. She held his hand as she looked in his eyes, only for him to be able to spit out two last words: Avenge Me. The fire raged, and the cast;e crumbled. Now a widow, she bawled her eyes out.

Her honor had already been near non-existent, and was only obeyed due to being married to Lord Kasa. She had fallen on hard times. She had started to lose her possessions one by one, That being said, she didn't even want most of them anymore. The only thing that kept her going, was her thirst for revenge. She was ready to give up the rest of everything she had, just as long as The Man who Smells of Roses is ended.

---------------

Boats are not meant to slam into rocks. This passenger ship, full of soldiers of the Golden Lotus Dragon and of passengers from the southernmost island. Refugees who were saved from the southernmost island which had just recently been overran by some kind of creatures. The boat was already in taters, with very little of the sail still usable and almost no food left. It really didn't need to slam into rocks. It was highly unfortunate. It crashed onto the rocks below Fuujiin Castle. The sailors were too distracted by the fire and the occasional rose petals falling around them for them to notice the approaching rocks.

The ship twists and turns, slams and splinters, as it slowly gets shredded by the local rocks. People wash up on shore, be them refugees, sailors, soldiers, or simple passengers. Weapons and armour also are swept ashore, as well as gold and the occasional robe or cloth.

Map

Greetings!

Hello! Here is my first attempt at a couple of things: A D&D Adventure in NS, A Fantasy Adventure and my first time being a GM and an OP. This journey will be a quest to go track, find, kill and/or capture the Samurai who Smells of Roses. I'll be most likely using quite a bit from the AD&D:OA book, and an equal amount from my imagination. There will be no requirement to read this book nor to watch SC, but I'll have a recommended Viewing section to see what I'm thinking of.

So far, what we need is a rolling system. We can all roll dice at home, or online. I have some ideas, but I want to discuss this with others. I have a plot in mind, but that's kinda moot if we can't roll for our actions.

Skills

Strength- What's needed tor actual moving things, carrying stuff, etc...
Intelligence- How smart you are, and how well you remember things.
Constitution- Your health and how well you can take poisons and whatnot.
Will- If injured, how you will react. Will you panic? How dedicated you are.
Dexterity- How accurate you are in your strikes, and how you dodge attacks
Charisma- How appreciated you are, and how you motivate others.

You will have a total of 11 points to spend here (since I find the 18. 10 16, etc... system that D&D uses to be odd). You can put these in any way you so fit, but you may need a bit of all of them. When you roll, you will add this number to your existing number.

Classes

Fighters:
Martial Artists
As the name implies, they are warriors in the purest sense. Fists and feet, with your martial art of choice. You get bonuses to unarmed fighting, and are able to stun enemies unlike any others. They cannot use any weapons or else they feel tainted.
Bushi
Professional soldiers for hire, bushi are anybody from front-line soldiers to guardians of the largest families. They carry all kinda of weapons, and are the most average joe of all. Because of this , they are okay at everything, and have no downsides.
Barbarians
Savages who have no skill, no class, nor any caution, but get a bonus to their strength by 3 points however they cannot have any intelligence nor dexterity

Magicians:
Wu Jen
Sorcerers who have much stronger then average powers all mages. They are mostly users of defensive and supporting magic.
Sohei
These are warrior priests, each devoted to a single church somewhere on this good earth. They have offensive magic and defensive magic, albeit weaker then most other magic users.

Cavaliers:
Samurai
These men are normally required to do the most honorable thing they possibly can, and are dedicated to a single lord until either their lord dies or they do. They can only wield Katanas and it's derivatives, and must always have their blade. If they lose it they will start to become insane and uncomfortable.

Clerics:
Shukenja
Wandering holy men. They cannot deal physical damage, but know how to ruin someone with words. They are teachers, healers and advisers, but cannot deal any physical damage. They do have some magical ability, but not much nor enough to be part of the Magician class.

Thieves:
Ninja
Assassins and sneaky figures, the ninja are a secretive bunch who are just as our lore knows them. They are not allowed to have any bonuses to their constitution nor strength from the start.

Abilities
Fighters:

Throw
-When throwing an item, add three to your strength roll. Once per encounter.

Steel Kick
-Add plus 3 to any kick you make. Once per encounter.

-When your party's total sum of health is below 12 hit points and you are below 5, you gain the ability to go on a final rampage, gain +10 to Constitution and +5 to Dexterity, the ability lasts until the final enemy is vanquished or the player is dropped to 0 HP. If you survive the encounter and all enemies are dead, roll a D100 if the number is above 90 you stay conscious but are only given 1 HP. If the number is 90 and lower, you survive but fall unconscious, again with 1 HP.

The Undead will follow you, and if seen accompanying you by any civilians, or it follows you into a village, you will be attacked by the local law enforcement, and if you manage to get the attention of the local Lord, you may be finding yourself fighting samurai. Level I allows one thrall, Level II allows the summoning of another thrall at the same time, and Level III allows yet another thrall to be summoned at once.

If you reach less then 10 health because of this, you must stop these bonuses, but you can keep them. At this point you can either reset or keep your less then ten health and large attack. Constant.

Terrifying Presence
-The legends and tales told of Samurai fighting legions of soldiers without fail spread far and wide, your presence in a fight makes your enemies second guess their attack. Human/Korobokuru/Hengeyokai/Spirit Folk enemies must make a will check against your own will score, if they fail they flee the battle.

Daimyo's Fist
-Permanently gain +1 to strength, will and dexterity but must fight others if the honor of your Daimyo is challenged. You lose 1 point of constitution each time this happens. If your const stat goes lower then -5, reset everything and repeat the cycle.

Silk Hiding Steel
-Add 3 to dexterity or strength when your character is a different gender the the target, but only for the first roll of the encounter and only against first time enemies due to the surprise of fighting a woman/man. Enemies are quick to grow wise to your abilities however and will not be so easily taken after the first roll and in subsequent encounters.

Experimental Style
-Roll D20. If higher then 16, then you automatically gain initiative. If someone else has this ability and rolls higher then you, then they take initiative and you go last.

Clerics:

Magic Missile

Brute Strength
-Use your strength stat instead of your damage. Once every 2 turns. This attack cannot be dodged, however you alo get 2 recoil damage.

---
If you'd like to create an ability for one of the four main classes, feel free! I need more!

Races
Humans
Completely normal, albeit during this time most people were smaller, so less 6'6" giants then normal please.
Korobokuru
In essence, Japanese jungle dwarves. Probably more like hobbits then dwarves, but they follow the same kind of thing. Plus 1 to strength, but -1 to dexterity
Hengeyokai
Shape-shifting animals. You can change forms into an animal once every 24 hours, and you can't change back for another 24 hours. You louse your clothes and cannot carry any gear or weapons that you normally carry around. This class cannot be either samurais nor ninjas.
Spirit Folk
--Bamboo: Can recognize most normal plants and can identify half the animals they see. They can walk without leaving a trail in the forest. Every level up they get, they can learn a new language.
--River: Can breath underwater. All items they carry whilst swimming are always dry. Once per day they can lower the waters by 10 feet so their party can pass. However, they are tied to a river, and if anything happens to it they are affected.
Can't be Ninjas, Samurai, Barbarian or Martial Artists.

Where we are now:

Hiori Shrine
Generally, the Hiori Shrine is just a normal shrine. It is not that remarkable save for the fact that it spans two sides of a river that has a raised bridge conjoining the two. It housed 150 monks and let them go about their day doing their monkly duties. It is rather quiet, and has few luxuries. What little luxuries there are are constrained to the shrine itself and the places where one would leave offerings. It is a shrine to the god of disease, and we are currently in the month named after said god, Yang. That's who the monks are blaming for what has happened to their shrine, when actually it's just a Lesser Nature Spirit.

Hiori Forest:
The forest that connects Fuujin and Jamimoto. It's pretty well lit and has plenty guards. There is destroyed shrine in one of the mountains, and roving bands of bandits here and there. It's not uncommon to come across a fight between the soldiers of Fuujin and Jamimoto against the bandits. Lots of trees, and even more snow. The path is snow-laden, but Jamimotoian Mages are constantly attempting to heat it up to remove the snow from the path. Caravans go by every once in a while.

Fuujin:
A small coastal Village once renown for being a key defensive location in the south of Wa has been around for centuries. It has(or rather had) a large caste on top of a pointy peninsula high above the water with a steep cliff below. From here they would rain down arrows and fireblasts on their enemies. The castle was rather large, easily 7 floors high. Now it's mostly burnt down.

The Kasa family rules with a gentle hand, albeit no one likes Lady Kasa. Now that lord Kasa has been removed from power, by the minute she is losing her position.

It's shitty but it gets the job done.

Leveling Up:

Every time you level up once, you can add another 5 points to any of your stats in any way, plus you gain 5 to your maximum health.

OR

You gain another Ability.

Killing enemies and completing quests will earn you XP, which will be used to level up. It takes 100XP to go to level 2, 300 more XP for level three, etc...

Encounters:

In each encounter, there are 3 steps that can be taken in any order, but no more then said 3 (unless an ability comes into play).

1. Secondary Action
-Things like drinking potions, opening unlocked doors, other simple things. May need a roll depending on how the GM feels.
2. Primary Action
-Any action that really needs a roll.
-Attacks
---Roll to hit
---Roll to deal damage
3. Movement
-What your character does. I'm not setting a limit on how far one can move, seeing as I'll leave that up to you. You don't need to roll to move 5 feet to a door. You will need to though if it's icy or there's traps. No poofing too far though, that's no fun. I also expect you to realize that your char can't go so far if they're missing a leg.

Map Info

Image
Purple lines are connecting trade routes
Burgundy lines are roadways; generally safe paths.
Black lines with circles are dividing lines between the prefectures.
Thanks to Korva for the words on the map!

Prefectures and Capitals:

Shitoro Prefecture
Capital: Shisato- Large Town
The northernmost prefecture, it's a land of warmth and prosperity. Lots of more tropical plants and wildlife, as well as more roving bands of nomads, mercenaries and bandits due to the fact that the weather is less harsh. It's a resort place, with lots of focus on the better things in life. Quite a few nobles are also here, as well as gamblers and Yakuza. Rumors say that the prefecture isn't ruled by the local governor, but by the local mob boss. This is where the Wa government gets a lot of their income due to there being significantly higher amounts of tourists comparably to everywhere else.

Asagawa Prefecture
Capital: Fengshu- Small Town
A vicious land filled to the brim with all sorts of things that want to kill you, the Asagawa prefecture is a dying land. The only thing it's got going for itself is an abundance of minerals and resources, way too much for them to mine out. Every town has more weapons then it could need, as well as low prices on weapons and gear. The reason is since there is just so few people and everyone both needs to make money as well as have people come by and help fend off the hateful inhabitants. The Korobokuru people are also quite common here, much more so then anywhere else. The land here is slightly less tropical, with more jungles lining the lands and massive mines crossing around everywhere underneath, be them Korobokuru mines or something else.

Tatenobe Prefecture
Nation and Prefecture Capital: Takatori
This prefecture is a rather temperate place, with mostly normal weather. It rains from time to time, it's sometimes hot, other times cold. In short, it's normal. It is also the conjoining point in between the northern lands and the southern lands. It is also the most easily farm-able, and in turn is very valuable. It also has the capital, which was dubbed so since it acts as a central hub. Nearly anyone who wants to go north or south has to pass by here. Recently, there has been a coup, so there is a new ruler as well as new rules being put in place in the capital.

Yahara Prefecture
Capital: Teecho- Large Town
One of the smaller prefectures, Yahara constitutes of a handful of towns that are in a well wooded area, not so much a jungle as a good old fashioned forest, along with plenty of tiny streams and rivers to boot. It's where the Spirit Folk reside, and in turn has lots of temples to pretty much everything. Yes, there are temples outside of there, but it is in Yahara that they are the most common. There is a lot of religious influence in everything that happens, and the magics are most welcomed here. Word to the wise, don't harp on religion here if you want to keep your head on your shoulders.

Iwabetsu Prefecture
Capital: Jamimoto- Medium Town
Nearing the southern arctic circle, the Iwabetsu prefecture is a rather cold and desolate land. It holds Yuna, the god of disease, as their patron saint. It's a simple area, with lots of snow nearly year-round. There is simply little life, well, anywhere. There are bandits, but they are also hard on times. There is very little money going around, and some of the larger cities are resorting to less then legal means for gathering money, such as human trafficking and whatnot. I wouldn't go around at night if I were you in the prefecture.

Yellow: Blacksmith
Yellow-Green: Library
Pale Green: Official Buildings
Red: Apothecary
Pale Blue: Armoury
Dark Orange: Military Buildings
Orange: Port
Pink: Gear
Purple: Town Hall/Palace
Pale Purple: Luxuries--Restaurants, pubs, brothels, etc...
Beige: Farmer's Market
Burgundy: Robes, cloaks, cloth stores.

Towns of note:
Fuujin-Start village.
Jamimoto- Medium-sized and closest town. Lots of supplies, but a slight detour.
Horotori-Large village to your north. Same kind of deal as Fuujin. On the way.
Shisato-Large Town. Most northern in the land of Wa, at least on the mainland. Northern Capital.
GOAL: Wagasaki- Northernmost small village on the mainland. Supposedly where the Samurai who smells of Roses lives.

Area Maps:

Currency

1 Ch'ien(Gold) = 10 Ch'ao(silver)
1 Ch'ao = 20 Yuan (Pristine Copper)
1 Yuan = 5 Fen(Dirty Copper)

Also Van, shouldn't health be derived from Constitution and not Strength?

Yes, but I chose strength since most people will have higher numbers there (I assume), so hopefully more health.

Yes, but I chose strength since most people will have higher numbers there (I assume), so hopefully more health.

That doesn't really leave Con with much purpose.

I was thinking this would be akin to damage reduction, or armor.

I see.
Also I had an idea for a fighter ability:

Adrenaline Rush
Roll will (D20). If the roll is between 10 and 15, lose 3 health, gain +3 to Dexterity and Constitution, and a receive a -3 to all non-combat rolls (Charisma, Will, Intelligence.) Lasts until combat has ended.

Tag, sounds interesting, can I do a martial artist with just a limited number of weapons available for use, such as kunais and quarterstaves?

Also what about Kitsunes?

For pathfinder I made kitsune rogue which which i naver got to use, so that's why I asked.
Broadside dead ahead!

Kunais would be over in ninja, as well as quarter staves. You can become a fox if you become a Hengeyokai.

No, but the main plot is an almost direct reference.

For health do you want us to round down or up?
(E.g. half of 7 divided by 2 times 3 = 10.5)

It's really good. The final scene at teh very end right before and including the final credits scene is so good.

Round up. Note, I've made some slight changes to the health thing.

Class:Bushi
Age:25
Sex:Male
Race:Human
Name:Keito Nagase
Appearance:6'1"ft (1.82m) and 220lbs (104.3kg) Keito is, in layman's terms, built like a brick shithouse. He has a puckered scar running from his right ear down to the right corner of his mouth, his hair is usually kept very short and he has a beard as well as a slightly crooked nose.

Health:25

Strength10
Intelligence0
Constitution1

Dexterity0
Charisma0

Abilities: (pick 3)
Magic Nullification
Quick attack
Adrenaline Rush
Optional Bio:Keito lived on a rice paddy during his childhood. Midway through his teens he decided that farm life was too boring and set off for adventure, this proved to be much unlike what he was expecting because unlike the stories of the hero saving the day, he had to resort to stealing and killing to survive, the friends he made during his travels ended up dying or selling him out but through it all he walked out relatively unscathed. Through this all he had a single friend who stuck with him through it all, around Keito's 23rd birthday his friend tried to kill him, but was struck down, from then on Keito avoided making any attachments on those who he worked with, so as not to experience the pain of losing someone again.
