The Slivern Senate votes to approve Lobbying Banning Act
By:Todd Logan, Chief Political Correspondent
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Today the Slivern Senate voted in a 26-24 vote to approve the Ban on Lobbying Act. This act, which bans all forms of lobbying in Slivern, was highly controversial with the chamber nearly divided down the middle. The measure passed because of the swing votes of Senator Joseph Parker and Senator Mary Murray (WP). With the bill now passed, it moves on to the House, where it is expected to pass. President Robinson said he plans on signing the law.

Minister Stocken Calls Raid on party, "Wrong, but necessary"

By: Jerrid Nowak, Head of the Martoken City Bureau
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On Friday, Minister of Justice, Morgan Stocken, testified before the House Judicial Committee on her role in the invasion of the HQ of the Slivern Aeonite Party. The raid took place during the hunt for the terrorists responsible for several heinous attacks in Slivery. Because the terrorists were members of a Radical group linked to the Church of Aeon, Minister Stocken requested that the President authorize a raid on the HQ of the Slivern Aeonite Party. It resulted in 15 arrests, of mostly clerical staff and interns.
Minister Stocken testified for five hours on the matter to a mostly hostile committee. Tensions rose to a boil when Councilman Alexander Szumla, chairperson of the committee asked Minister Stocken if she thought the raid was appropriate. She responded "It was wrong, but necessary." To this, Councilman Szumla responded "Minister, you deserved to be impeached." Those in the gallery gasped and the other members of the committee shouted for the Chairman to be removed from the room.
The Committee reconvenes on Monday, it is expected that it will vote on a new chairman.

President Robinson Addresses a joint session of the Grand Council

SHARE THIS: Image Image Image Image
Martoken City,Slivery-Last Night President Gerald Robinson Addressed a joint session of the Grand Council in a specially convened Executive Session. In his 15 minute address, President Robinson outlined his plan for a new ministry called the Ministry of Regional Affairs. The ministry, which would deal with affairs in Region Inc., Slivery's region, has been proposed as a result of Slivery's increased involvement in Regional Affairs. President Robinson called the proposed Ministry "A needed addition to the cabinet in light of the increasingly globalized world." He also said "If we don't act fast, we will fall behind in the Region and, will loose any influence we have already gained." Finally, he announced that he would nominate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair department of Foreign Justice, Alfred Roberts, to head the new Ministry. The charter for the Ministry is expected to be introduced into the Senate first.
The address also was tainted with controversy. 10 Councilmen and 5 Senators belonging to the Slivern Workers Party boycotted the address in protest of the President's decision to order a Raid on the Slivern Aeonite party's headquarters during the investigation of Aeon-inspired terrorists.

The House of the People

Martoken City, Slivery-Today the House of the People overwhelmingly voted to end an unpopular investigation into the Ministry of Justice. The investigation, officially titled "The House of the People's probe on the accusation of the Ministry of Justice's misuse of tax payer funds", was killed in a 101-19 vote. The intent of the investigation was to determine if the Ministry of Justice had done anything wrong in raiding of the Slivern Aeonite Party HQ during a recent terrorist attack. The Slivern Workers Party, the minority of the House, was largely credited with bring the investigation to the floor. Even when first proposed the probe was scorned by the Slivern People. A SWN poll shows that 75% of Slivern Citizens felt the probe was a "disgrace and an insult to the executive branch"
The SWP were not phased by such accusations. The minority leader, Alexander Szumla (SWP, MM) said on the floor of the House "This investigation isn't only for the Citizens of Slivery but, for my colleague in the house of the SAP."The Councilperson in question, Linda Clinton (SAP, XE), the only delegate of the Slivern Aeonite Party in the Council voted to end the investigation. This is a sign to many that the SWP motives aren't just humanitarian.

Supreme Court Judicial Review Hearing Room

Martoken City, Slivery- Today the Judicial Review Committee of the Supreme court voted to remove Judge Elliot Oliver from office. This ruling comes as a result of accusation that Fmr. Judge Oliver sold cases to the highest bidder. The most infamous case came when it was reveled that A federal Prosecutor paid Oliver $1.2 Million dollars, mostly of tax payer money, to convict Nancy Mika, the "killer Mom" as the media labeled her.
The Commitee voted 9-0 to evict the judge and it only took ten minutes of deliberation to reach a vote. After a summer recess Oliver will face the Slivern Bar oversight committee to find out the fate of his law license.

Volunteers spent all day doing a variety of tasks, from searching ruins for survivors, to simply making sure refugees had some hot soup to sip on. One volunteer, Norman Burrows preached an optimistic message about the hurricane saying "Today shows what Slivery is really about. It casts aside all of the bickering of the world and instead shows us coming together as one big community, which is what we truly are."

Martinez City, Slivery- Today Pater Aaron XL, the Supreme leader of the Church of Aeon, has died at the age of 82. The cause of death was complications from lung cancer that he has suffered from since 2012. Millions have already begin to flock to Aaronus Trentus, or Aaron's home, the resident of the Pater, to begin mourning his death. His death will be officially announced today at four o'clock, as tradition dictates that a Pater's death be announced at the same time that his election was announced. In two days, the Pater will be buried in the Hall of the Paters, which is in the basement of Aaronus Trentus. After the Pater's funeral, the council of 7, the ruling council of clerics, will convene to select a new Pater.

New Pater Elected, Committee Member Resigns

Major Changes come in the Church of Aeon as Pater Michell XVII takes office.
By: Gavin Oliver, Senior Religion Editor
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Pater Michell XVII Walking out to greet the faithful
Martinez City, Slivery- Today the Church of Aeon and the ruling Committee of Seven announced that a new Pater had been elected. The Committee announced that Superior General Daniel Kiether has been elected Pater, and has taken the name of Michell XVII. In his opening remarks, Pater Michell said he was inspired by the Angel Michell, who is Aeon's warrior in the afterlife. He said "I am prepared to fight for the faith against the infidels in the world."
Many have already commented on the stark difference in the new Pater's rhetoric. Since the Civil War toppled the theocracy back in 1963, the Pater's have taken a tone of peace in their speeches. "Instead of unity," one observer remarked "this Pater wants to divide."
Church officials have also taken note of that change. The most dramatic show of this is when Superior General William Sabbath immediately announced his resignation from the Committee of Seven after the Pater's election. In a press release he said "I fear the Church and the Committee are taking an extremist turn, which I want no part in."

Cleric Thomas Adams dies in Prison

Today the last General of Aeon's Army died in his cell on One Island.

View of One Island Prison from the sky

One Island, Slivery- Today Cleric Thomas Adams, the youngest General in Aeon's Army has died today at the age of 72. During the Civil War of 1963, Thomas Adams led troops during the conclusive battle of the last prayers. In it 1,000 soldiers of Aeon's Army were killed and 500 were taken as captives, including Cleric Adams.
Today prison officials have confirmed to SWN that Cleric Adams was found dead in his cell. A cause of death has yet to be announced.
President Gerald Robinson issued an executive order today with regards to the Cleric's passing. Said order ordered an investigation into the cause of death, the release of his remains to the Church of Aeon, and, most controversially, that Cleric Adams be buried with Military Honors. The Chief of the Senate today issued the following statement in regards to the executive order. "It is a disgrace that President Robinson would even consider allowing this traitor to our Government Military honors. He (Cleric Adams) is not close to equal with the men and women who have actual fought and died for our country."
The Church's reaction to the death was also extreme. Pater Michell, in a public audience today, stated "Today, the Church begins mourning a terrible loss. Cleric Thomas Adams was an amazing man and an amazing Cleric. His fifty-one year imprisonment is a disgrace to the Church and Aeonite's everywhere. President Robinson's orders today were only to cover-up the fact that he has martyred someone.I say now, the Church must take up arms and fight for the faith. The blood of the martyrs won't stop screaming until we do."

Damage to one of the Marian Statues

Slivery City, Slivery- Late last night, the SBI reports, an armed gang of three zealous Aeonites, including Cleric Michael Parker, broken into the rectory of St. John XXIII and brutally beat to death Rev. Walter Ross, the Pastor of the Church. After the murder, the three ransacked the rectory and Church, destroying many sacred articles. The raid ended with the gang calling 987 on themselves, and alerting the police of their attack. Police quickly arrived to the scene and alerted the SBI of the attack. By the end of the night, the three were in the custody of SBI.
Federal Advocate John Bee announced he will convene a grand jury to consider an indictment on the charges of murder in the first degree, breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, and destruction of private property. If convicted, the three would face the possibility of execution. FA Bee stated that his office is leaning towards that option.
Most of the nation was saddened by the attack, with one major exception. Pater Michelle declared the three "Heroes of virtue." He also issued this warning "Beware, people of Slivery! This is only the first battle in a long war!"

BREAKING NEWS: LEAKED DOCUMENTS LINK PATER TO RECENT ATTACK

By: David Harris, Chief Judicial Correspondent
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SHARE THIS: Image Image Image Image
Martinez City, Slivery- SWN has just received a file of documents, including letters, emails, and banking statements, which have indicated that not only did Pater Michelle know about the recent attack that destroyed St. John XXIII Roman Catholic church and killed Rev. Walter Ross, but he ordered it. These documents, which we received from a high ranking leader in the Church of Aeon who didn't wish to be identified, have been authenticated. The documents portray a disturbing timeline. This plan, it would seem, was put into motion sometime before the Pater was elected to the high office. After he selected his team, he selected a target and gave marching orders. On the day of the murder the two laymen, Kevin Voisin and Eric Lanzalaco, had wire transfers of 1 million legionairs each to bank accounts of family members. Bank records show these came from the Pater's discretionary account. SWN has handed these documents over to the SBI.
We tried to contact the Church for a comment, but got no response.
A senior official at the Ministry of Justice said "The Minister will be meeting with the President today to discuss the indictments and will, no doubt, discuss the Pater's role in the attack." Stay with SWN for continuing developments in the case.

CRFS votes to condemn, remove Church of Aeon

Acting Chairwomen Rev. Carrie Miller Announces the Commission's ruling

Slivery City, Slivery-Today the Commission on Religious Freedom in Slivery, or CRFS, met in special session to discuss the growing threat the Church of Aeon has posed to religious freedoms in recent weeks. The meeting, which included all delegates except for the representative of the Church of Aeon, voted on three articles. The first was a condemnation of the church for "placing such a dangerous leader in a position of power." That statement, which basically condemns the Church for electing the current Pater, was passed by a vote of 6-1.
The second statement passed condemned the Church for sponsoring "an egregious and completely arbitrary assault on another faith's place of worship." That motion passed 7-0.
The final act passed by the commission was an act to effectively remove the Church from the commission. While the Church's delegation is guaranteed by the Charter, and unanimous approval by all members is required to change the Charter, the commission found a way to remove the Church's voting power. The commission voted to remove the Aeonite Delegate from the commission, and then voted to bar the vacant seat from being fulfilled. This motion passed 7-0. The Aeonite delegate, Michael Norbet, was the chairperson of the commission at the time. His removal made Rev. Miller, who was the vice-chairperson, the acting head of the commission, until it could meet again to vote on a new leader.
The Pater issued the following statement in reaction to the Commission's decision: "I am so very glad to hear of the CRFS' ruling today. I was already thinking of resigning my delegates authority to sit on the board anyway. I am glad that I now longer have to associate my lovely church with that group of Heritics. May Aeon's holy fire consume them all."
In related news, today President Robinson has order any and all Federal Agents who have been assigned to help with security at any major Aeonite locations are to be removed forthwith. He also directed the Federal Park's Commission to remove the Aeonite Grand Temple from its federal parks list. This will limit up keep founding, as well as additional security personal. Currently federal agents make up about 33% of security personal of Aeonite Venues.

PATER MICHELL ARRESTED

By: David Harris, chief judicial correspondent
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SHARE THIS: Image Image Image Image
Martinez City, Slivery-Today, after a year-long investigation, the SBI served an arrest warrant on Pater Michell at Aaron's House in Martinez City. Pater Michell was wanted on charges ranging from murder to terrorism in relation to attacks on local Christian churches and members of other religions. These attacks have occurred in the year since he was elected Pater, and have been executed by high ranking members of the Church. Church documents that have been leaked also indicate that he ordered the attacks. The SBI concluded its investigation last week, when court records indicate that the SBI sought out warrants for the Pater's arrest and to search related Church properties.
Minister of Justice Morgan Stocken said of the arrest "This was a hard decision to make, as the Pater is a respected religious figure. However, the heinous attacks force our hands to act."
The members of the Council of Seven, which assists the Pater in ruling the Church, were nowhere to be found on the property. SBI officials declined to comment on the manhunt for the Council.

Pater Michell speaks at a press conference after a preliminary hearing

Martienz City, Slivery-Today in Slivern Federal Court, Pater Michell was official charged with First degree Murder, Arson, and Terrorism all related to a series of attacks that he allegedly ordered Church officials to carry out over the past year. The Pater, who is the head of the Church of Aeon, the biggest religion in Slivery, refused to enter a plea at the trial, prompting the trial judge to enter a plea of not guilty for him.
After the hearing, the Pater briefly addressed the press, during which time he commented on "the illegality of these proceedings." He went on to state "The treaty that ended the War of Infidel Aggression (the Slivern Civil War of 1963) guaranteed that the Pater would not be subjected to a criminal trial, and yet here I stand today. Therefore, I have no choice but to declare that 'peace' treaty invalid." He went on to state that he filed a lawsuit in Slivern Federal Court against in the government of Slivery for violating the treaty.
SWN contacted the Ministry of Justice for comment, but received no response.

Supreme Court Denies Pater's Appeal, are excommunicated

The Supreme Court Building

Martoken City, Slivery-Today the Slivern Supreme Court voted 12-3 to deny Pater Michell's appeal to the criminal case against him in Federal Court. The charges, which stem for attacks the Pater allegedly order on other religious organizations, will stand according to the majority. In the majority's opinion, penned by associate justice Lillian Eggert, the Pater's claim that the treaty, which ended the Civil War of 1963, protects him from prosecution is totally invalid. "The treaty was a one-shot legal remedy" Justice Eggert writes, "and it wouldn't have even applied to the Pater at the time, after the treaty was signed. Therefore, the Supreme Court orders the trial of the Pater to continue as scheduled."
Pater Michell, in his typical fiery response, stated "As I have always believed, this land is full of god-less, soul-less heathens, who pervert Aeon's law, and call it justice." And, in a very controversial move, the Pater went as far as to excommunicate those members of the Court, who are Aeonites, that voted against him. "I do declare the heathen justices damned for all time, banishing them to the lands where Aeon's mercy does not shine." SWN has consulted with Church lawyers who all agree that this was a valid excommunication. The trial will resume on Monday.

On a side note, the House of the People has just voted 61-59 to approve a bill which would repeal most of President Gerald Robinson's "Paradise on Earth" legislative package. The package, so named because President Robinson said that it would make Slivery "a paradise on Earth" was widely unpopular even among members of President Robinson's fellow Liberals who believed that it was too wide-reaching. The last piece of that package was passed two months ago.

Senator Aaron Malone with former Chief of Senate Richard Jubulis

Martoken City, Slivery-Today in a press conference President Gerald Robinson announced that he will nominate Senator Aaron Malone (SLP) of Laternian as his choice to replace former Vice President Jenifer Jarvis. Malone, who is serving the last year of his second term in the Senate, was also the Lt. Governor of his home Province. He also served one year completing a special term for his home Province in the House of the People. "Senator Malone" President Robinson said in his conference, "Has distinguished himself in service to his country and to his constituents, with whom he has a 73% approval rating, and has consistently reached across the aisle."
