Selma

Wish they would have strayed a bit from the standard approach to these kind of movies, but nevertheless, it was powerful and well-executed with great acting. Most importantly for me, nothing was sugar-coated. 9/10
Also, I'm gonna need to get the soundtrack; the music for the movie is awesome.

Seraphim Falls, Liam Neeson sucking all the energy out of the film, like an on-screen black hole, as usual. Shame really, it would have been a decent film if someone else had been cast instead of him. Russell Crowe, or Ray Winstone, would have made something a lot more interesting of the role.

I've seen 3 movies since my last post, and will go over each of them.

Inside Out: Pixar's winning streak continues. An amazing movie. 10/10

Roboshark: I like how Syfy can sometimes have a sense of humor about themselves... there are a couple of exchanges of dialogue where characters say things like "That sounds like a Syfy movie" or "Wasn't that on Syfy last weekend?" Very good specifically because it doesn't take itself seriously. 9.7/10

Megashark vs. Kolossus: Only okay specifically because it does take itself seriously. Still worth a watch if you're a fan of Megashark movies (this is the third one, if I remember correctly), but Roboshark was definitely the better of the two Syfy movies on Saturday (I watched Poldark last night, so I have to catch Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf on demand). 8.5/10

Probably the third time I've watched it, still as great as ever, though puppet Yoda bothers me and the lightsaber fight sucks.

Watched Syfy's double feature last night.

3-Headed Shark Attack: Once again, the 7:00 movie proves better than the 9:00 one thanks to a better sense of humor (and, in this film's case, copious amounts of fanservice... I don't believe I've ever seen this many hot chicks in swimsuits in any other Syfy movie). The special effects are better than you might expect, but not anything to write home about... the acting is pretty much what you'd expect, although you expect someone as famous as Danny Trejo to do a decent job and he definitely delivers. 9.3/10

Zombie Shark: Although I found the preceding film slightly more enjoyable, this one's not bad either. Cassie Steele, for being an actress I've never heard of before, displays more talent than anyone in a movie named "Zombie Shark" has a right to have, and is a good enough actress that I'd predict her career is about to start taking off. Her scenes toward the end (when a shocking death of a major character, a ballsy move I wasn't expecting from an otherwise fairly traditional Syfy movie, occurs) are especially well done, and quite heartbreaking. Worth a watch if you're a fan of the genre, or if you want to see a promising young unknown take a film that's probably not going to be liked by any professional critics seriously and elevate that film quite a bit with her performance. 9/10

Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf. One of Syfy's most intentionally funny movies to date... it knows exactly what it is, and doesn't put on airs. Therefore, it's pretty good, especially if you're a fan of Roger Corman's other monster-hybrid movies (Dinocroc, Piranhaconda, the original Sharktopus, etc.). 9.5/10

Jurassic World (Which I saw like a week ago but meh)

Pretty much what I expected out of it. Which was that it was pretty meh. It was okay I guess, but there was nothing special about it at all. Honestly, even the "upgrade" graphics wise from the old ones didn't make it that worthwhile. Pretty much all the characters were boring as hell, except that one pilot guy. There was little to make it stand out, and honestly, the more I think about the movie, the less I find it interesting. But it wasn't horrible I guess. Of course, they're gonna milk Jurassic World for all its worth with a sequel to the revival...

Also...product placement...product placement everywhere. I SERIOUSLY doubt it is coincidental that there were 3 DIFFERENT types of cars that were Mercedes Benz...

5/10, or maybe a 6/10 if I want to be generous.

IMO, Jurassic World is good as a popcorn flick, but it suffers from living in the shadow of the first film and inevitably gets compared to it. Pretty good movie, just not as groundbreaking and inspiring as the first one.

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! Pretty much what you'd expect from a Sharknado movie (we all know what they're about by now), but more of it... with the entire east coast under threat this time the scale is quite a bit bigger, and returning director Anthony C. Ferrante does a good job of making you feel that without it eclipsing the onscreen action. If you liked the first 2 you'll probably love it, if you didn't you'll probably hate it. Only thing I had a problem with was the very tail end where they do a very lame and gimmicky attempt to generate social-media buzz by having Twitter voters decide whether April lives or dies in the next one... caused me to shave off a couple points. 9.8/10

At home: Lavalantula on Syfy. One of the best Syfy movies in recent memory... when you get bigger names than usual, they apparently turn in better performances than usual. It's also nice to see Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow and Leslie Easterbrook back together again... it's almost like a mini-Police Academy reunion. It's clear from the get-go that everyone involved is there to do nothing but have fun, which is exactly the attitude that the cast and writers of a Syfy movie should have and usually creates the network's best films... this one is no exception. 10/10

In theaters: Terminator 5. Kind of a throwback to the old-school Terminator movies in many ways, but with enough new stuff to keep jaded viewers interested. At least you can tell what the fuck is going on during the fight scenes this time around, which is a vast improvement over Salvation all by itself... the fact that the movie is a bit more on the fun side (Salvation was too serious) also helps. If you like Terminator movies, it's a must-see. 10/10

Funny People. The last great Sandler film and truly a sad irony.

It can almost be considered a biopic at this point (without Sandler having cancer or turning his life around): "George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a middle aged former stand-up comedian turned movie star. Despite his millions he is sad and lonely and most of his recent film work is low-brow and dumb."

You can't make this shit up.

Clerks watched a documentary about how Kevin smith almost wrote a superman movie so I thought to check his work out and it was weird but I loved it it was obviously low budget and cheesy but something about it just had me laughing and relating whole time great movie
