Your nation's technical standards

Postby Osway » Mon Jul 13, 2015 9:40 am

Out of the following categories, which standard(s) do your nation use? I will list the most common ones, but feel free to use a lesser-known one or make up your own.

Electricity supply
All RL countries use AC, but DC supply was used in the past.
The most common voltages are: 115 V, 120 V, 220 V, 230 V and 240 V.
The most common frequencies are 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Usually 60 Hz is used with lower voltages, and 50 Hz is used with higher voltages.

Electric plug socket type
List of most common RL types here

Analogue television
Note that many countries have no analogue television signals because they have completely converted to digital.
PAL (used in most of Europe, E and S Africa, E and S Asia and Oceania)
SECAM (used in France, the former Soviet Union and W Africa)
NTSC (used in North America, Japan and Burma)

Digital television
DVB (used in Europe and Oceania)
ATSC (used in the US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Dominican Republic and Honduras)
ISDB (used in Japan, Philippines and Portuguese-speaking Africa)
DTMB (used in China)
DMB (used in South Korea)

Document format
This is the digital format used for exchanging various types of document.
Office Open XML (.docx) developed by Microsoft in 2006.
Word Binary File Format, a series of formats developed by Microsoft in the 1990s.
OpenDocument, an open-source XML-based format developed by OASIS in 2005.
RTF, developed by Microsoft for cross-platform use.
TeX, an advanced typesetting programming language developed by Donald Knuth in 1978.
Uniform Office Format, an open standard developed in China in 2007.
PDF, an open standard for portable documents which contains all the information about the fonts and graphics in it. Developed by Adobe in 1993.

No comparison exists in use of modern nations today that could adequately compare Imperial technology to that of the greater world. We are, bluntly put, dated.

No, in Fatatatutti it's strictly buyer beware.

YellowApplan power supply standards come in two forms: DC and AC. DC - in the form of a 4-pin Molex-style connection similar to that of pre-SATA hard drive power cables (12V, ground, ground, 5V) is the most common for small devices/appliances, lighting, and other low-power situations. AC power is provided in the form of an enlarged Molex-style connector with 8 pins (positive, ground, data power, data RX, data TX, data ground, ground, negative) for larger appliances (including breakers for the aforementioned DC system); an appliance can request a voltage anywhere between 128V and 512V at a frequency between 32Hz and 128Hz (most common is 256V/64Hz) using the built-in data line to communicate with the electrical subsystem powering the outlet (this also serves as an additional safety precaution, as such outlets will not supply power on the AC terminals unless instructed to do so via the data connection, preventing risk of electrocution should a foreign object be inserted into any of the connectors).

Some older portions of Manzanopolis Prime have vestiges of an American past, including the use of NEMA plugs and 120V/60Hz AC current, but these are continuing to disappear as they are replaced with more modern connectors. Many locations in Manzanopolis Prime and Trololopolis provide an older style of AC Molex-like plug with only four prongs (positive, ground, ground, negative) at 120V/60Hz; this plug was part of the transition from North American plugs to the current system, and adapters between this and the current 8-pin plug (usually with a built-in transformer to drop the minimum 128V of the current standard to somewhere closer to 120V) are still sold in order for YellowApplans to use foreign appliances.

YellowApplan television broadcasts are entirely digital and network-driven, using standard Internet protocols (either TCP/IP or UDP) for broadcast. Some old broadcasters still co-broadcast with NTSC-M and ATSC broadcasting equipment, and a few facilities still have televisions that operate on such broadcast formats, but these haven't been in mainstream use within YellowApplan jurisdiction since YellowApple, Inc.'s pre-independence days.

Document formats vary, but the most common are PDF (for non-editable documents) and TeX (for editable documents). Markdown and similar simplified document authoring languages are also common, as are SGML derivatives. ODF is modestly popular in cases where interoperability with non-YellowApplan entities is desired. Use of DOC or DOCX (along with other proprietary formats) is virtually unheard of.
