Stories scattered through time.
Mankind has grown quite fond of
recounting the exploits of heroes and villains,
forgetting so easily that we are remnants;
byproducts of a forgotten past.
Man, born from dust
was strong, wise and resourceful;
but he was born into an unforgiving world.
An inevitable darkness, creatures of destruction,
the creatures of Grimm
set their sights on man and all of his creations.
These forces clashed,
and it seemed the darkness was intent
on returning man's brief existence
to the void.
However, even the smallest spark of hope
is enough to ignite change,
and in time man's passion, resourcefulness and ingenuity
led them to the tools that would help even the odds.
This power was appropriately named
Dust.
Nature's wrath in hand,
man lit their way through the darkness;
and in the shadow's absence came strength, civilization,
and most importantly, life.
But even the most brilliant lights eventually flicker and die.
And when they are gone…
darkness will return.
So you may prepare your guardians,
build your monuments to a so-called "free world,"
but take heed…
there will be no victory in strength.
Salutations! Storm here. Welcome to In Memorial of the Fallen: a RWBY-based RP fellow Hunters! If you haven't already been aware, RWBY is an American animated series created by Monty Oum (may he rest in peace), well-known for its pseudo-anime style and 2.5D animation. And awesome fight scenes, very awesome fight scenes. RWBY is set in the world of Remnant, which is similar to Earth in almost everything save these: an additional intelligent race (Faunus), transformable weapons (sniper scythes and shotgun gauntlets), a crystal power source (Dust), a broken moon and monsters (Creatures of Grimm). You are going to take the role of a huntsman or huntress in training, attending the very prestigious Beacon Academy. How you may have got in, keep that to yourself.
At Beacon, you will be forming teams comprised of four members whom you will work together with during your time at this academy. The end goal, you say? The purpose of Beacon is to train the next generation of Hunters that will protect humanity from the evil Grimm. Don't worry, faunus; we're in this thing together. Really! I'm serious! Then there is stuff like semblances and the types of weapons to choose from, but I'm not going to fill you in on everything, so go here to the RWBY Wiki to find out more.
Now for the rather brief history of humankind in Remnant! *clears throat*
The Grimm appeared at around the same time, or perhaps some time after the appearance of mankind for reasons still unknown to all kinds of people who live all over the planet. They and their creations were often targeted because… ummm… Huh. Anyways, because of a combination of factors — from the Grimm overwhelming human civilization to political intrigue among the nations of Remnant — they were driven to the brink of extinction, cornered into four city-states that later became the four kingdoms (Atlas, Vacuo, Mistral, Vale). Just as all hope was lost, humanity discovered Dust and managed to fight the Grimm back; and where the Grimm disappeared, humanity filled the void and prospered.
However, the Grimm don't simply go away. Those who have experienced being beaten by mankind and surviving have learned when to attack, and so have become more powerful. Some of them even live for many centuries. Their chosen tactic is to stay close to the borders of humanity, waiting for the time where they can snuff out the light that characterized their prey. Mankind almost fell when they fought among themselves during the Great War, which to many would be the darkest point in human history.
The Great War was so violent and oppressive to the point where human freedom and culture was crushed underfoot by the oppressive and nationalistic regimes of the four kingdoms. Fortunately they managed to sit down and end it all, establishing friendlier diplomatic ties and stronger international cooperation. Thus a new order was imposed on the world — one that was based on peace and diplomacy. Humanity would be changed forever, and its influence could be still felt today; from the Huntsman academies to the Vytal Festival, from the Transcontinental Tower Network to the trend of naming children after colors.
Yet their troubles weren't exactly over. Look I'm sorry, okay? Life in general is a bitch, even in the RWBY-verse! *sigh*
Faunus are a humanoid race with animal traits like horns or animal ears. Their human counterparts saw them as an inferior race for a long time, and they were often subject to slavery and discrimination. Eventually, they couldn't take this oppression anymore, and revolted against the humans; starting off the Faunus Rights Revolution, which later evolved into the Faunus War. The faunus won, and humanity gave them basic rights and guaranteed their integration into society —except they didn't quite keep the latter. This is where organizations such as the White Fang come in, to defend the faunus and press the human governments for faunus equality.
For years the White Fang used protests and boycotts in order to make their voice heard, however some think that they may not be able to gain what they want if they don't do something else. Five years before the present, their leader stepped down, and another one took his place. Under this new leadership, the White Fang became a terrorist organization that used violent means to achieve their ends. It worked so well that governments and citizenry alike were intimidated and gradually gave them what they asked for. However, the divide between humans and faunus was still not bridged, and it may look like this inter-species tension may continue for decades if nothing was done.
At least the Great War bit was fleshed out more, but it's still vague in my opinion. Anyways, do well at Beacon and you will be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to defend mankind against evil — whether they be Grimm or people with nefarious schemes.
Good luck.

Application
Because of certain developments that took place, I have decided that I make known Monty Oum's naming conventions for the sake of future applicants. You may choose to follow the recommended qualities or not, you will not be rejected for choosing a name that doesn't follow the guide below. However, it is highly recommended you follow, because we want to be consistent on the color naming trend thing that the RWBY-verse has.
Names for characters (doesn't have to be both the given name and the surname) should be the name of:
- a color
- something that sounds like a color
- something that means a color
- something that makes you think of a color.
Names for teams should be composed of the initials of the team members' given names, which should be the name of:
- a color
- something that sounds like a color
- something that means a color
- something that makes you think of a color.
Got it? Good. Now, here are two sets of applications: an Individual Application and a Team Application. Each of them have their own formats, so choose from either one if you want to fly solo or work as a team. If you wish to RP more than 5 characters, I wish you luck because rarely do people keep track of that many characters in an RP.
