I would really like to just get access long enough to grab the bit of info I had on my nation's wiki page there and put it somewhere else.
My own fault I guess, I knew I should have saved a back up :(

Not by the mods, because we're not making that call, nor are we discussing it. And no, you couldn't get me to sysop a wiki on a bet. I don't think any of the other mods (well, maybe Blaat) have any interest in positions there.

I know it's on [violet]'s loooooooooooooong list of things to do around the site. I have no idea what priority, if any, has been assigned it.

Wait, what?

Depends on what it would entail.

That's what I'm looking at doing, too. I need 2 minutes to open my page and select all and control+c it.

My guess is just be present. Kenny and I have done a good enough job of keeping the riff raff off the site and sorting out issues when they come up, but I'd like for this site to have some kind of definition going forward. If that means getting mods or administrators here on the staff, or just making them on the staff only, I'd be all for it. Whatever it takes to define this site and give it a decent enough priority where any downtimes are fixed in less than one week's time.

With the exception of when I'm on holidays, I guess I can do things like "sudo service apache2 graceful/restart/start" on a server within one week of someone notifying me :P

I can volunteer as tribute to the sysopping with Blaat but this counts on me not being lazy, which is rare nowdays.

When the site was up, Kenny and I didn't really have many problems or issues with keeping the site clean and problem-free (as far as user interactions go). But we could probably use a mod or mods here to at least have a presence on the site, as perhaps that would solve some of the accountability issues. Heck, if they only want NS mods to staff it, then so be it. So long as it's up and running smoothly.

Personally speaking, the site's been down for over one week now, and the person who has been selected to maintain the wiki and NS++ has not provided any updates. I understand this is all volunteer, but the whole reason we set up the wiki and brought it back from the dead was because enough people cared about it and wanted to solve some of the problems we ran into about two years ago.

Just to be extremely clear here, I'm not interested at all in the user interaction part, fighting spam, etc. Only in ensuring that the site/server is up, so to speak. And that goes for the wiki, not for the NS++ project.

Understood. :) Quite frankly, we definitely need help with keeping the site / server up, but as far as things were a few weeks ago, the user interaction part was okay (though there were some coding issues us sysops don't have the permissions to fix - I can't remember the exact details but it is written on the site).

I should clarify 'sysopping' refers to the technical side. Curse you wikis and your language not in check with the rest of the industry.

On the old NSwiki, sysops were the second-tier admins (i.e., Todd & myself). "Bureaucrats" were the ones who dealt with technical issues.

I have no idea what nomenclature Wikipedia uses.

Not long before the wiki went down I was trying to set up an account but I could not get past the spam blocker code no matter how much I tried. When the wiki comes back up please fix this bug problem.

All you need to do is copy and paste it in to the login box. However, make sure you're logged into that nationstates account on the same browser that you're attempting to log into NSWiki with.

If your trying to do it in incognito mode you also need to be logged into nationstates in incognito mode.

Someone was able to get ahold of the guy hosting the site and he said it will be fixed when he returns home. It seems to be an issue with the database server being out of disk space.

The normal precedence established for web systems is sysops are maintaining the back end systems (techies) with sysadmins being there bosses as higher-up sysops.

Normal admins/mods/ect handled the content, just Wiki's are 'different'.

For the record, NSwiki returned to service on 16 July 2015. According to WikiApiary, the downtime lasted from 4-6 May 2015 and again from 4 June to 16 July 2015.

I wonder how they repaired the wiki?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem when I tested the login system in Private Browsing mode: rest assured, the nation exists, but the API querying system appears to have failed.

I am apparently still logged into the system. As a sysop I don't believe I have access to fix this. And I am not 100% certain who owns the wiki at this point, but I have not been informed of any changes other than the site (and the archive site) returning on-line.

I'm just going to say this right here. Many worked hard, very hard to obtain the one database we have. Many devoted a lot of their time to get the site back up, polish up the old database, and edit / transfer templates over just to get the place started. Since about November, the site has had several coding bugs that pertain to the 'internal error' messages members have been getting from time to time. The backups site remains off-line. The site has been unstable since about May (as Charlotte pointed out). Now we are having login issues.

This site needs to at least be some kind of priority with NS. There is a lot of potential with this site, I feel, and it would compliment NS especially with respect to RP databasing, sports records, gameplay history, etc. It *was* the primary source for all such things when we moved off Jolt and they removed the forums. While NSwiki did in fact lose about four years' worth of data, folks have rebuilt much of it and over time it will probably return to what it once was if it is taken care of. Yes, the site needs work. Yes, the work would need to be done by volunteers willing to donate time and effort to fix it. They're mostly internal stuff that Kenny and I don't have the ability to fix. So we'll need help in some other capacity to get this product functioning properly again.

In my opinion, the time-out error is probably the main reason why the NSwiki.net database wasn't exported properly (it had over 44,000 articles, so it is expected that the SQL download would take a long time), and NSwiki.net began in 2004: that is nearly a decade of information that was not exported out properly. However, I also express concern about the bot-created articles that people are not likely to read, especially the ones with a population of just one.
