I specifically didn't mention the beach quills as they are, well unstoppable. Partially because unless the Groveback itself turns away and walks the other way, you can't really 'protect' it.

Also beach quills can kill of other large creatures too, it's just that for the larger colonies Grovebacks tend to be the main source of food.

That's why I suggested Groveback riders hanging or tying scraps and pieces of armor on the underbelly and legs to protect them.

Anyways, what about another tech faction with an Enclave-style twist to it? Where the Khans want to fly into the sun, and the AA wants to imprive life on Rigel-3, this group would want to fix the gravity issues and reestablish contact with Earth. They'd be nationalistic, and drone on with propaganda about Asiatic values and morals, and walk around in military style uniforms and fancy suits of armor, securing advanced technology and weapons and developing their own stuff. They'd be authoritarian, and have a military-structured society with no voting or corporate power, and would use their own vehicles to fly and drive around and deploy based and camps to operate from.

Alternatively, it could be a group with the same values, but without the technology. They'd run around in patchwork vehicles and use salvaged weapons, being made up of common people who want to fight the corporations and other major groups and establish order, maybe with subgroups of "Rangers" and gunslingers who act as peacekeepers and lawmen? They'd still talk about traditional values and morals and create propaganda to fight with.

Second one sounds better. Running into them would prove... deliciously disastrous, given the Vagabond lifestyle.

Here's that robotics corporation I said I'd make.

SynthTek Enterprises

One of the megacorporations that latched onto the expedition to Rigel-3, SynthTek is the leader in nearly all things synthetic, as well as the basis for much of the other corporation's robotic or electronic needs. Odds are, if you see a half-decent metallic automaton, drone, robotic limb, or automated turret out there, it came from a SynthTek factory.

SynthTek weeded its way into the arsenal of many of the well known groups who first settled on Rigel-3 - GAZPROM, the Archaelogists Assosciation, even the United Nations, along with many more. Contracts with these companies supplied said companies with their electronic needs in return for a hefty sum in SynthTek's pockets. They established quite the regime of their own in the more desolate regions of Rigel, their "work" being done away from prying eyes - creating more robots and electronics for not only the parties that hired them out, but themselves in a much higher magnitude. The grand scheme of SynthTek was to cozy up with the bigger corps and groups, and then manufacture their own massive military of robots of every shape and size.

This goal was nearly realized as well - hundreds of thousands of robots were manufactured in the massive citadels that were the Rigelian SynthTek factories, just waiting to march out from the fortified doors to begin their conquest. However, this all fell short with one thing - Timonium. The CEO of SynthTek, while generally a business savvy man, ran the corporation like it was his own country, and he was the dictatorship. When he saw the potential Timonium held, he halted his robotic army to investigate this odd element. Before he knew it, nearly all of SynthTek's funds were poured into the investigations of Timonium applications in the field of robotic warfare.

Some say that a breakthrough was made, but it doesn't really matter, as the bankruptcy of SynthTek on Rigel-3 led to them pulling any operations they had out before the great sky collapse. Now, the numerous SynthTek citadel-factories lie dormant, guarded by endlessly running robotic guards. The factories act as vaults now, sealing the army of metallic death machines that lie underneath the ground, sealed tighter than any vault on Earth, likely never to be unearthed.

Various items used by her other personalities: Cigarettes for the Mistress, Cigars and a flask of whiskey for the Veteran, A leather whip for the Professor, and Candy for the Kid.
"Sheeredge", the blade nicknamed for its insanely sharp edge. Cuts cleanly through even steel with a good enough swing. Made from the light blue metal Tritonium, a supermetal used to make the armor of space battleships. Used only by the Beast.
Lil'bit, an offroad vehicle gifted to Eira by Sev. Contains several supplies from food and water to tarp and poles. Contains a maxim machine gun and tripod, dismantled and set in a case in the back.

Personality: Eira herself is a humble woman. She's never been prideful of her actions, often mentioning the assistance of others in her missions. To her, her vagabonding are for the desire for adventure, to live a fulfilled life, and, deep down, to better the world; Not to boast about it. She is quite apologetic and rarely lies. She is pretty honest on what she does, even about her various personalities even if it does risk getting her kicked out. She is pretty empathetic, and does not wish harm or to harm people. She simply wishes to live and let live. That doesn't mean, when push comes to shove, that she won't fight. She is not combat minded, but can suppress herself enough to fight. She has trouble aiming to kill, which often leads her to be not as combat effective as she should be. She is a caring individual, and will not ignore someone who needs medical attention or food. This has since been exemplified with the birth of her daughter, which has made her more into a motherly figure than before. She is still quiet, and doesn't like talking to people much, but she can speak when she desires to. When she is emotional, she can be quiet serious and assertive. She suffers from PTSD, triggered by talks of her pregnancy or the mention of it. She is sometimes happy, but often has an either neutral look or a downcast one.

Eira suffers from DID, which gives her multiple personalities which really seem like different people.

    1. The Mistress: Sly and seductive. She speaks in a sultry tone. She is a prostitute, selling her body in exchange for cash. She enjoys her work greatly, having a high libido. Sometimes, if its someone she likes or finds attractive, she does it for free. She is heterosexual and has a slight disdain for other women, even showing jealousy to some. She smokes cigarettes and drinks gin. She gets really mad at the mention of age, although she does act like an old fashion harlot. She dislikes Shimmer, as the girl calls her grandma which she hates. But she tolerates her enough.
    2. The Professor: Old and experienced. A man who has seen many things and traveled to many places. He acts like a leader and knows what he is doing (even when its not his field). He does not prefer other people, but does work with them when needed. He is sort of a hardass, but he has a soft spot, even if he doesn't show it. He likes kids, and acts like a grandfather of sorts. He loves Shimmer, being her designated Grandpa.
    3. The Veteran: Jolly and casual. The Veteran makes a show of himself and drinks away his memories. When in combat, the soldier switches on and he goes really serious, even when inebriated. He is heterosexual, and likes to hit on women (though, most of his attempts fail as most people think he is a lesbian and a lot of ladies aren't convinced otherwise). He drinks whiskey and smokes cigars. He likes Shimmer, being her designated dad.
    4. The kid. Wild, free, and full of life. She is a free spirit, happy most of the time. She is very sensitive and gets emotional at the tiniest slight. She isn't good at controlling her emotions. She likes to steal a lot, often lying about it. She rarely gets caught though, but when she does she lets Eira deal with it. She loves candy. She loves Shimmer, being her designated big sister.
    5. The Beast: A wolf in human skin. Savage and cannibalistic. Non cooperative and vicious. Loves the taste of blood, regardless of its origin. Eats the flesh of foes, often human ones. Dangerous to all. Despite his inherent danger, Shimmer calls him her big brother. Oddly enough, the beast never attacks Shimmer and even protects her; Whether out of brotherly care or belief she is his cub. He uses the "Sheeredge", his personal weapon.

Traits, quirks, habits: She has a lisp, making hard for her to communicate clearly. She has a personal bubble which she likes to maintain; the only person allowed to violate it is her daughter Shimmer. She bits her hair when nervous. She writes with her left hand.
Likes: Eira likes to sit by fires, read news, stargaze, and study artifacts. Coffee is her drink of choice. Her passion is traveling and is her lifestyle. She enjoys the company of her daughter, even if she is a burden and has caused her suffering beforehand. Her hobby is writing, whether a story or just notes.
Dislikes: Tea, sugar, drugs, alcohol, sweets, her other personalities and killing people.
Reason for becoming a Vagabond:
A man in her past helped her, raised her, and trained her in the ways of the Vagabond. Since then, she has followed that as her path in life. Even if she didn't want to, she didn't have any other option. DID made her difficult to work with and outright dangerous if the Beast arises.

Bio: Eira's life is one full of tragedy and happiness, with the former making a large portion but the latter making a larger impact.

Eira was born on UNS Safeguard, a battleship turn flying hospital, a year after Landfall, to a japanese family. She lived on that ship for half of her life, living the early part happily. Of course, that didn't last. Nine years into life, she killed two of her classmates and ate parts of them. The event sent her straight into the padded room, while the doctors diagnosed her. After weeks of Psychoanalysis, she was diagnosed with DID and sent to the mental health ward of the ship, dubbed the Asylum. She lived there for the rest of her time on Safeguard, sedated most of the time.

This life ended when Safeguard finally crashed. Eira was lucky to be one of the survivors of the ship. Then the Beast took over and made them the sole survivor. Search parties would see her, surrounded by bodies of those that survive, eating them. Not even the search parties went unscathed, as the beast attacked and killed many of them. Soon after, she disappeared.

14 and wandering the wastes, covered in blood, everyone treated her with high suspicion. Lucky for her, a man named Jared picked her up and practically adopted her. Jared taught her the ways of Vagabonding, surviving the wastes, and instilling a sense of purpose and passion within Eira. She traveled with Jared for four years before he died in a firefight. While she worked with him, she came into contact with Renascimento, who Jared worked missions for. She dropped contact with the organization some time after Jared's death, but has contacted them periodically to sell artifacts and information

Eira worked with Hiram and other Vagabonds on several jobs, from taking down a bandit baddie, to rescuing the party leader. Eira eventually parted ways with the group, seeking to travel to other parts of the planet and search on her own. Before she parted, she was given the vehicle Lil'bit, a gift from Sev who turned into a dear friend of hers. She considers the group one of her fonder memories.

It wasn't long until tragedy struck her again. She doesn't know when or who, but she got pregnant. She became extremely stressed and depressed, with it becoming worse and worse as the pregnancy went on. She traveled the best she could, searching for a doctor willing to and with the no how to give her an abortion. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't find one, being in an area very tribal and conservative at the time. This made her consider taking her life on several occasions, with one attempt which failed.

Eventually she went into labour. Camped out in an ancient ruin of the previous civilization, she gave birth alone in one of the still standing buildings. With guts and tons of painkillers, she got through it, giving birth to Shimmer. After her birth, she went unconscious, having strange dreams of a strange nature. She remembers the birth and dream clearly to this day, sometimes recalling strange happenings during it.

Eira was very conflicted over whether to keep Shimmer or not, at this point not yet named. She thought of giving her to a village, but she had a huge sense of doubt when going to do it. Over time, this lessened, finally deciding to keep her despite the danger to her. Eventually she named her Shimmer, for the "glow" of her eyes, hair, and skin at night.

Eira spent the next years both traveling and raising Shimmer. She is going to the Great Khan Desert to search for the ruins, often left untouched because of their inhospitable location.

Name: Shimmer Takahashi
Sex: Female
Age: 4
Height: 3'4"
Weight: 45 lbs

General appearance: http://2.p.mpcdn.net/27186/468290/1.jpg Shimmer has bright cerulean eyes, silver hair, and pale skin.

Skills:
Children don't hold many skills, yet the wastes of Rigel-3 necessitates that they learn things fast.
    Can apply bandaids and ointment
    Can hold tools
    Only knows english
    Good picture drawer
    Great smiler
    Expert crotch puncher

Stuff they own:
A small duster similar to her mothers but in much better condition
    A small backpack.
    Crayons and paper
    A book
    Some rations
    A small plastic water bottle
    a fleece blanket

Personality: Shimmer is like a lot of children her age. Outgoing and free, without a sense of danger. Despite Eira's best efforts, she constantly gets herself in situations that might harm her. She approaches most people with enthusiasm and curiosity, wanting to talk to them. While she is a free spirit, she does listen to her mother and takes her orders seriously.
Traits, quirks, habits: She giggles constantly, even if the situation is more serious. She tilts her head at everything, looking at them from different angles. She bites her nails a lot, an unconscious habit.
Likes: She is a similar to most kids. She loves sweets and sugar. She loves to draw and likes animals especially Gyrosprinters. She likes playing games and having fun. She likes mimicking her mother, doing similar things to her. She loves her "family". She likes to visit the ruins and look at artifacts of the old civilization. She loves the stories her mother tells her. She loves napping in the back of Lil'bit.
Dislikes:
    Seeing her mother cry.
    Being alone
    Being away from her mom
    Vegetables
    Coffee
Reason for becoming a Vagabond: Her mother is a Vagabond so she wants to be one too! (like she has much of a choice)

Bio: Shimmer was born more than four years ago in an ancient ruin. Early in her life, there was question on whether her mother would keep her. Eventually, Eira decided to keep her. She has never been far apart since.

Shimmer was unique child. Her skin was snow white and her eyes were cerulean. At night, they seemed to "glow". As she grew, it turned out her hair was silvery white, shimmering like her eyes. Hence, she was named "Shimmer". Not only her appearance, but she has a strange attraction to the ruins and artifacts of the past civilization. Besides that, she is a normal child of the wastes.

She has traveled with her mother everywhere, not being far apart. She visited ruins, cities, towns, meeting a lot of people, sometimes getting into trouble. Despite some antics, it was often because of her that she and Eira don't get kicked out.

I'll review the two later, I need to get going soon.

So at the start of the IC, I've been thinking about our modes of transport.

I've debated between a military grade truck or an armored bus with two motorcycles used as scouts.

here are some pics: this, that.

Given what I could read, Carly (looked good so far, but I'm not done); Lil'Bit could have been given to you by Sev since Eira parted ways. Good tie in for things to come down the line...

It also gives us a mixture of vehicles that are not too 'weaponized' and players can switch around for interaction and plot purposes.

I'm open to suggestions for other vehicles, but I'll make it clear if its just dotted with weapons it won't fly.

Anyway, back later!

That second one looks damn promising. Reminds me of the bus from Borderlands 1.
Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Why not tractor trailers with jerry rigged transport rigs? Similar to the War rig from Mad Max, except a platform instead of a tanker.

Edit: I did not consider that possibility Min. I could edit it in once you are done. It sounds appropriate enough.

Ouh, yeah. That would be nice for traversing the shitty terrain.

But I mean, where's the speed? Where's the style?

I present to you my idea. It could hold as many people as we'd have, it is open-topped and well-equipped to fend off bandits and local hostile fauna, it's fast and easily able to traverse shitty and off-road terrain, especially if we ahve teh suspension jacked up and put some future-space-version of Toyo Open Country AT2 tires (These eighty pound beasts [I work at a tire warehouse, familiar with these things.]), and it is quite durable.

You know the Elephants from Halo? What about something similar to those in concept?

Seems a little....snug. My fella likes his space :P

I'm assuming the truck would be bigger than the pickups that we have on Earth, just based on what it would have to do on Rigel-3. I'd estimate that the back would easily hold up to a dozen people with enough personal space that people could lie back. Personal preference aside, I think speed would be more important than personal space, imo.

Alternatively, we could have something akin to the Bandit Technical from Borderlands 2, again, jacked up and enlarged.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Well, based on Min's input, we might already have one. Look at the tech tab in the OP. Lil'bit might be making a comeback.

Also, I do like my idea with a tractor trailer. The trailer would be a flatbed with a bus welded to it. It could be filled with seats, beds, cargo, etc.

Couldn't find a tractor trailer, but I imagine that military surplus would be pretty common, so: See this

Strip out the cargo bay and replace it with a flatbed and you've got plenty of space to place tents and supplies.
First as tragedy, then as farce

Yeah, now that I look at it, the whole vagabond and revolutionary thing is a lot cooler than some established, tech-hoarding superpower.

Asiatic Peoples Restoration Movement

The APRM is a revolutionary and paramilitary movement opposed to the domination of Rigel-3 by corporate powers, and who's goal is to see the planet's gravity flux disaster fixed so that contact may be restored with the homeworld. The APRM is poorly equipped, but optimistic and determined in its purpose. Run from underground bunkers and small surface villages and outposts, the APRM distributes propaganda in the forms of posters, billboards, and shortwave radio broadcasts playing traditional music and preaching of the glorious fight to restore their society and fight the influence of corporations and the Westerners. They patrol the lands with companies and parties of soldiers, dressed in distinctive black and brown uniforms with Red, Blue, and Gold armbands, killing bandits and working to bring the people over to their cause, promising public works and improvements in life under their authority.

That's just a quick attempt at something. The name could be better, but I like it, and I'm not really thinking straight right now. I might have overdone or left out something, I don't know. AAAGH.

Well, a good start is where they are based and the name. Asiatic Peoples is a bit exclusive if they want to spread their movement. Sounds a bit ethnocentric.

I would suggest ACE. Association for Contact and Equality. Has a nice ring to it~!

Yeah....but I'm not a fan of groups who like equality....eh.

And most of the world is Asiatic, right?

well, this isn't the thread for it so I'll just ignore that bit

Anyways, no that is not really true. Only Great Khan Desert is mostly Asiatic, Central Asian to be specific, because of the colonization designation. The rest of the planet varies in ethnicity and culture.
