It happened so suddenly, the beginning of the end.

Millions have already been infected, the victims of a new plague unlike any other once before witnessed in the brief history of mankind, a deadly contagion so cruelly and so harshly released upon an unsuspecting world, an act of terrorism that would in mere weeks bring the most prominent superpower crumbling to its knees. Quarantine has long since failed; countless lay dead and dying, many more consumed by the ravages of illness.

Now, in the aftermath of ruin, a new dawn is soon upon us. For those fortunate enough to have survived thus far, whether by fate or sheer determination, things will never again be the same.

No help is coming.

No safety exists.

Will you, a survivor, discover the truth of our death?

Or will you succumb to infection?

This is predominately a survival RP with a story should one strive to discover it.

A manufactured virus (T-13, a mutagen) has devastated the vast majority of the United States. Millions have been killed in the chaos and millions more infected. Though lethal to many some have instead been driven to insanity by the effects of the virus, having become little more than mindless savages that blindly strike out at anything and everything within sight; fewer still have been ravaged by horrific mutations that have since stripped away every ounce of the victim's former humanity. A minute number are not only immune but benefit from infection.

The near empty streets of Chicago is where it all begins (though the RP is not confined to this single location). Most sane citizens that managed to survive the initial outbreak and subsequent quarantine have since departed in search of supposedly safer areas. Survival is the main goal and there is no set direction for this to go.

Though not technically zombies in the basic sense, the infection could be comparable to L4D or even Resident Evil but only in its execution. This is not L4D so don't expect a Hunter to pounce from the shadows.

A manufactured viral mutagen possessing a high rate of lethality. The virus quickly and often times destructively targets the DNA sequences of a living organism leading to abnormal cell growth, necrosis (cell death), and spontaneous recombination and mutation. The virus cannot survive for long durations outside a living host and as such transmission is predominantly through direct contact with an infected individual via tainted blood and bodily fluids, however close proximity (coughing, sneezing, etc.) can potentially lead to infection in a handful of cases.

Once inside a host the virus mutates into one of several varying strains, a process often influenced directly by the genetic makeup of the infected individual. Note: the virus will mutate regardless of the strain of the initial infection. At this time there is no consistent method in which to determine which strain will form.


Infection Rate: 69%
Lethality Rate: > 99%

The most common of the various strains, the virus embeds itself into the respiratory and circulatory systems of a host though other systems may be affected to a lesser degree. Flu-like symptoms are often present in the early stages of infection and generally worsen over time. The lungs specifically are often irreparably damaged, leading to breathing difficulties and, in the latter stages, internal hemorrhaging with death arriving shortly afterwards. Incubation periods and progression rates may vary wildly between individuals though the very young and the elderly often succumb to the virus within a matter of days if not hours. Healthy individuals can potentially survive for several weeks with proper treatment.

Lethality Rate: < 40%

The virus predominantly targets the neural pathways of a host but can also cause mutations in both the skeletal and muscular systems. Though varying between individuals brain, nerve, and spinal damage can result potentially leading to partial or full paralysis and brain death in extreme cases. Individuals who survive infection often suffer catastrophic brain damage. These individuals are often times extremely aggressive, lashing out at anything and everything around them with little sense of self preservation remaining.

Lethality Rate: > 80%

The most destructive strain, the virus targets DNA sequences throughout the body, leading to uncontrollable recombination and mutation. Progressing in a similar manner to that of other strains, given time an infected individual will undergo severe physical mutation which is often fatal. Survivors are generally no longer human in terms of appearance and behavior and are extremely dangerous vectors of the virus.

Lethality Rate: 0%

A neutral strain that causes no physical change within a host body though flu-like symptoms may be present during the initial stages of infection. While not harmful in anyway to the host the virus may still be transferred to other individuals via contact or close proximity, after which mutation into another strain may occur.

Lethality Rate: 0%

The rarest strain, the virus targets the DNA sequences of a host but with surprisingly beneficial results. Though greatly varying between individuals, those infected may see a boost in physical traits, immunities, perception, mental abilities, and other as of yet identified benefits. Though boasting positive results transmission is still possible.



Infection Rate: UNKNOWN
Lethality Rate: UNKNOWN

This strain has mutated to affect a species other than humanity. A catchall term, progression varies wildly with either little to none or massive mutations present, including those which would be considered beneficial. Any creature can potentially be infected, though those in greater contact with humanity are at a greater risk.



An aerosol variant that is capable of airborne transmission. This strain can survive outside of a living host for several days (potentially weeks) given the correct environment, particularly those possessing low temperatures and high humidity. Upon infection it mutates into another potential strain.

The virus has destroyed the minds of these poor souls, leaving behind a husk of what was once a human. Feral and highly aggressive (in most documented cases), infected will attack any living thing that it within their reach including, in some instances, other infected. Despite their seeming lack of pain infected easily succumb to most injuries.

While similarly ravaged by the virus Psychotics have retained much more of their mind, capable of abstract thought, communication, and limited critical thinking. Though an inherent rage often nullifies any intellectual benefit, their group dynamic and strong leadership, often the smartest or most physically powerful, leads them to be capable of advanced planning and tactics unseen in standard Infected.

Reaver: Any infected which has undergone abnormal and often destructive mutation. Little more than monsters, Reavers are extremely dangerous and should be avoided.


The muscle mass of Brutes has doubled if not tripled atop a dense growth of bone, giving these Reavers unparalleled strength. Brutes are quite capable of tearing through most structures with their bare hands and unlike other infected are quite difficult to put down once enraged.

Weakness: Low Intelligence



These infected have adapted to low-light environments, having near perfect night vision (as well as other heightened senses) at the cost of severe light sensitivity. Frighteningly intelligent, Lurkers often form packs and often utilize complex strategies when hunting, including but not limited to feints, flanking, and distractions. When one is spotted it is safe to assume more are laying in wait where they cannot be seen. It is advised to avoid Lurkers when at all possible.

Growths in the lungs and throat allow Screamers to wail to such a degree as to disorient those standing in close proximity though at the cost of deformations to the rest of the skull, often leading to complete blindness. These wails can prove lethal to anyone caught within a few feet. More dangerous is the Screamer's tendency to lure in other infected.

Most commonly having once been large dogs (though other species are not unheard of) Mutts are often seen roaming in packs. Possessing some primal intelligence Mutts are capable of utilizing a myriad of hunting tactics and are extremely dangerous to lone survivors. Mutts often refrain from outright attacking large groups but may harass survivors until a suitable target presents itself.

TIMELINE

Day 0

A bio attack takes place in several major cities across the continental United States. Several thousand die in the first few hours of the crisis while thousands more are infected. Most are transferred to local hospitals for treatment.

Day 2

Following the rapid spread of infection the United States Nation Guard imposes a strict quarantine of affected areas.

Day 5

Riots erupt in the city of Seattle (an affected area) after several individuals were killed trying to break quarantine. Hundreds are killed.

Day 8

Riots erupt in the city of Chicago (an affected area) as illness continues to spread during an information blackout. Shortages of various goods further escalate tensions. Death toll has reached over 200,000 across the United States in affected zones.

Day 11

The first case of infection is recorded outside of the quarantine zones.

Day 14

Quarantine fails in several cities as infection quickly spreads. Death toll has risen to over 1,000,000 across the United States.

Day 15

Travel, already limited due to the attacks, is completely banned by foreign nations.

Day 19

Quarantine fails in the city of Chicago. Many who have survived quickly leave.

Day 22

The Federal Government is unable maintain control of the situation. Safe zones are established across the nation. An exodus is made to leave the cities. Many will not find safe haven. Death toll has skyrocketed to almost 100,000,000 and climbing.

Day 26

The Federal Government has ceased normal operations.

Day 27: The Beginning

Survivors still living within Chicago meet with various levels of success.

Sam, a young girl, meets Vincent, a gifted university student, who agrees to aid the youth in finding her missing father. Traveling to the upper floors of the Sears Tower the pair become trapped after a run-in with infected with Sam fracturing her arm in the encounter. Soon after the two meet Sarah and Luke, an unstable woman and a redneck respectively. As the initial tensions wane the four are attacked by a Brute only to be saved by the mysterious D, who leads them, Lamar, Henry, and Foley to safety.

Flight B738, a grounded airliner and current survivor holdout, is overrun by infected. Hugh, a civil engineer, is one of few to escape along with Rebecca and Chase. The three later join the others at the warehouse but not before a second encounter with a Brute.

Connor, a private contractor formerly serving in Chicago, is taking refuge within Mike's Hardware when he is found by Elizabeth, a near death CDC official. In an act of kindness Connor nurses the poor woman back to health.

Green Berets operating within the city take aim at the survivors seeking shelter within the warehouse. Chase is killed by a stray bullet and Sam injured. Hugh and Rebecca flee (later discovering Lauren, Hugh's fiancee), Sarah abandons the group, and the rest are scattered. Foley leads a small band to a hardware store where they take shelter.

Day 28

Green Berets increase operations within the city, securing Reavers for transport for unknown purposes. Alternatively the soldiers begin actively hunting down survivors after the encounter the following night. Bullwhip is leading the detachment. Later, after several failures, the Green Berets enact a contingency plan, the USAF firebombing of Chicago after a total pullout. Sears Tower is demolished.

Hugh and Rebecca are injured, rejoined by Lamar before them and Lauren leave town.

Connor and Elizabeth pack their supplies and too leave town, rejoining with Connor's former brothers in arms.

Foley, Henry, and Vincent leave to scout out a potentially undefended checkpoint - while gone Sam is nearly killed after venturing out of the safety of the hardware store. Foley is shot by Green Berets and is left behind as the two return to the shop, encountering Jean. Foley successfully defends himself from the soldiers who are subsequently annihilated by Reavers. Foley later falls into the river after an encounter with a Lurker, his whereabouts currently unknown. Back at the hardware store the group is soon under attack by both infected and military helicopter. Miraculously they survive the encounter as the Green Berets begin their retreat.

Sarah travels north after abandoning the others, having a tense encounter with bandits before being welcomed into New Evanston where she quickly becomes involved in a plot to remove the corrupt leader O'Neil. After O'Neil is dead Sarah rises to a leadership position. She and a small group then return to Chicago on a moderately successful supply run where they encounter the others at the hardware store. Luke and Sam join the group as Vincent, Jean, and Henry make a supply run of their own. Craig, a member of Sarah's group, is fatally injured by a Lurker. Later on Route 90 they encounter Richard, a former CPD detective.

Ava, Cade, and the others successfully assault a Nike base under the control of U.S. soldiers.

Day 29

Atlas Security Forces arrive in Chicago.

Ava, Cade, and the others briefly take refuge at Northwestern University before it comes under attack. Christie commits suicide after being fatally injured. Charlotte and Hans are separated and make way to New Evanston.

Hugh and friends are captured by rogue military forces outside Toledo, Ohio but escape to continue on their way to Boston.

Connor and the contractors arrive in Cincinnati.

Vincent leads a coup in New Evanston, deposing Sarah and ejecting her and her loyal followers from the compound. In an act of revenge Sarah shoots and kills Hank, leading to the retaliation and death of Ian at the hands of Luke. Sam leaves later that night to find Sarah.

Welcome to anyone who stops by. I feel a survival-type RP would be a fun idea and so threw this together. Nothing is really set in stone and was hoping for it to be a build-as-we-go sort of thing. Hopefully there will be enough of an interest to get this going.

Bio: Samantha Tallow is the only daughter of a small English family. Born deaf and, as a result, mute, her childhood was challenging but otherwise relatively normal. While capable of applying herself intellectually Sam's true enjoyment came from competing in various athletic activities, being a member of track and field and, at one point in time, the football (soccer) team. Despite her disabilities she excelled in sports when able to overcome said obstacles. Outside of sports Sam has few friends, being unable to easily connect with those around her due to lack of communication. Shyness not withstanding she is a upbeat individual with a mostly positive outlook on life.

Her father is a businessman and travels often. At times she (and sometimes her mother) may travel alongside him as was the case recently. During the outbreak she and her father became trapped in Chicago during the quarantine and, with his guidance, managed to survive for several weeks as the infection spread throughout the country. Despite the grim reality Sam has remained hopeful alongside with her father. Several days prior she and her father were separated and, currently, she is trying to locate him.

Bio: Born to a family of successful investors and realtors, Vincent was expected to follow in his parent's footsteps. It was clear, however, from a young age that he would not. Every spare moment he had was spent in the library. By the time he was ten, he had read every non-fiction book in the library, and was half way through the fiction section. When he was only 15, he graduated high-school as valedictorian. After spending one year traveling Europe, in which he visited several historical sites, he enrolled in UW-Madison, studying to become a historian. With a GPA of 4.0, an IQ of 145, and butt loads of cash, he was accepted. Soon he was upstaging teachers in his history classes, sometimes completely taking over the class. Most professors were annoyed at first, but quickly grew to like Vincent once they talked to him. He was modest, polite, and somewhat nice. He befriended several other students, who all decided on traveling to Chicago and the surrounding area for break. Only a few days into the trip, his entire group ended up infected. He had no symptoms though, which puzzled his doctors. Finally, each and every one of his friends died. Now he wanders the streets, hoping to survive whatever the hell has happened.

You can be anyone you want to be in the RP within reason. Keep it relatively grounded (conveniently having a super spy in the group is probably unlikely), and you can't kill player characters on a whim without permission (they wish to leave, are inactive, etc.). Other than that feel free to do and be whoever you want.

Bio: An immigrant who traveled at the age of 18 to the states, Harald only wanted a better life. His family was rather poor and Harald ended up only getting a highschool diploma. Hearing of the self-made business men in America, Harald left and took a loan. He built a business around clothing stores. He became decently successful, mainly being based around New England. When the outbreak began, Harald did anything to survive. After a few close scrapes, he started to become more cautious. He has seen at least 3 people die because of his mistakes. Being the devout Catholic he was raised to be, he still repents daily in hopes of forgiveness. However, the outbreak has taken a toll on his faith an he often finds he has lustful thoughts and even drinks alcohol with more frequency. Harald's been finding anything he can and he currently holds, a bottle of Jack Daniels, a small switchblade, a QWS-06 (but he has no ammo), and 3 day supply of beans in a small backpack.
