The Zeus Defense Industries UM-03 Phoenix is a mid-altitude, long-endurance (MALE), multirole unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) built by Zeus Defense Industries. Originally designed for light attack, reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence, the UM-03 Phoenix is made to carry out multiple missions all within a single platform, while survivability of the airframe is assured.
For better versatility of the airframe, the UM-03 utilizes different mission modules, which there are four types as of now: 'Weapons Bay', 'Extended Tank', 'Long-Range Radar' and 'Additional Pod' modules. The first 'weapons bay' module consists of internal weapons bays that can hold up to 2 x 2,000 lb bombs. The 'Extended Tank' is meant for greater endurance and range, which may be needed from time to time. The 'Long-Range Radar' module, consisting of the Rayman G-SIR Radar, has been made suitable for long-range ground search and surveillance. The 'additional pod' module enables the storage of even more electro-optical pods for reconnaissance, surveillance or intelligence.
Though its ISR capabilities can be enhanced through the 'Long-Range Radar' pod, its primary ISR system consists of the AREOS (Advanced Rotating Electro-Optical System), which consists of several high-resolution camera that can rotate under the rotation system they are fixed upon. Furthermore, the AREOS integrates a scaled-down version of the F-26's Distributed Watcher System - a system that gives a 360-degree view around the aircraft. As a result, the AREOS brings a full panoramic view around an area about a quarter the size of Manhattan, with resolutions good enough to identify the type of vehicle on the road at 20,000 feet.
In addition to its ISR capabilities, the UM-03 Phoenix can also carry munitions to carry out light attack roles. Its weapons can be carried in its 'Weapons Bay' modules, which, as aforementioned, can hold up to 2 x 2,000 lb bombs, or be carried in its external wing pylons that can carry an assorted amount of bombs, ground attack missiles and rockets, making it a potent aircraft for fire support and counter-insurgency missions. It can also carry two short-range air-to-air missiles, in order to defend itself against enemy aircraft to a limited degree.
Variants
- UM-03A: Standard UAV. Estimated to be a capable competitor against other MALE UAV's.
- UM-03N Blue Phoenix: Naval ISR variant to supplement MPA's. Estimated to compete with other MALE UAVs in maritime ISR.
