Factbook Question/Answer Thread

Postby Euroslavia » Fri Feb 20, 2015 3:15 pm

If you have any sort of question concerning factbooks here or in-game, coding issues, help with development, or any question dealing with an issue here, feel free to post it. I would encourage player interaction here, help each other out to promote the quality of posting here and of the factbooks in-game.

Players might also consider contacting a Roleplay Mentor via telegram or Internet Relay Chat.

I've always harboured a burning question about news-oriented threads. Should we organize our individual news articles into a unified thread, which could be that of an individual nation or of a region, or otherwise post news as they come in individual threads? Which is more preferable?

Also, first.

I'd strongly recommend keeping it in one thread. I also think it'd be better for the readers as well, so that if they think your writing style is great, they can read other news articles of what's happening in your nation rather than having to search for multiple threads.

I'm not exactly sure where this should be asked, and if it's already been answered, feel free to let me know. Is there a special kind of formatting used in News Dispatches? Or is it pretty much up to the creator? (Also, if there's a "Guide to Dispatches" thread anyone, I'd be very appreciative if someone could direct me to it)

I'd say it's very much up to the creator of that news dispatch.

I've seen nice wikipedia-like maps on some factbooks and would like to know how I could do the same? Is there a certain software needed? Or even just a way to create maps, not necessarily like wikipedia's?

Any recommendations are welcome, thanks.

Wikipedia provides blanks (borders of countries marked on a white background) of globes and maps of the present and at various times in the past. A simply Google search with "wikipedia blank maps" should provide an ample selection of these. Of course, if your desired maps aren't based on Earth, you'd need to make your own maps.

You could colour these in for your customized map.

How do I write an overview? What is a good thing that could be put into that category?

How are legislation and politics different? How are those distinct categories?

What is the international categories for?

How to write an overview? It depends on what suits you best, I'd recommend a wiki-style overview however. The best thing to be put into an overview, I believe, is the basics of your nation including, but not limited to:
  • Population
  • Brief History
  • Government
  • Nation's place in the world
  • Nation's role/importance in the world
Nioya wrote:How are legislation and politics different? How are those distinct categories?

Legislation refers to laws while politics refer to the general ways on how the country is run, AFAIK.
Nioya wrote:What are the international categories for?

You mean those WA Categories (i.e Inoffensive Centrist Democracy, Psychotic Dictatorship)? If so, then they classify your nation based on the level of Civil Rights, Economy, and Political Freedom.

I've been looking for a type of map maker for a looooooong time, never did find one, I eventually broke and made a REALLY terrible looking map on Microsoft paint, just so me and a few friends knew and understood where stuff was, thought it looked like a 4 year old made it, it thankfully got the point across

The factbook page actually explains them.
Factbook: General Informations
Account: Personal stories from individual persons.
Bulletin: Policies from what I remember
Meta: All about gameplay or OOC stuff.

From the page:

Types of dispatch include Factbooks, which officially describe your nation, Bulletins, which address gameplay, and Accounts, which are articles or stories involving your nation's people.

So, use your judgement really. If you're still unsure where something specific should go, just ask.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but I want to get into role playing and wish to write a fact book. The problem here is that I want a small sized country that's extremely rural but yet, has not too little people. Would a country with 10 million to 30 million be realistic enough with a country 20 km^2? A rural and small country is my aim here.

That might be too rural and too big, depending on what you're going for. Ireland has a population density of about 60/sq. km with our 4.5 million people. New Zealand, equally populous, is 17/sq. km, and Australia is less than 3/sq. km.

There are a few factors at play here. The geography is very important - how good is the land for farming? You can't forget the history - how long has it been settled? Older countries with better land will pretty much be more densely populated by default.

It also depends where you're roleplaying. If you're in a region that caps its populations at about RL levels, 10-30m could be about right, or it could be a bit too big. If you're in a region that doesn't, you could be looking at neighbours 100-1000 times more populous than you.

The Kingdom of the Free Folk of the Penguin is yielding its power to exist as a nation. Throughout our long and arduous history, penguins have been harassed and belittled to no end. After taking into account of factors you brought up, would a 600,000 km^2 country, with a population of 2,500,000 million people brings us to about 4 people per squared mile, which I find suitable enough. With terrain similar to that of southeast Asia, would it be realistic to live in such a place?

Bhutan, the sparsest of the East Asian nations, is five times more densely populated than that; Laos is 28/sq km, Burma is 76. The rest are denser again. It wouldn't be unrealistic to live there, but if you have any cities at all than you'd be left with vast tracts of land with virtually no one in them. If you're a country of almost exclusively jungle and mountain, that might be plausible, but otherwise I'm inclined to suggest you be a bit bigger.
