It is the 26th century. As Humanity begun to explore and colonize nearby star systems, they soon learned that they were not the first sentient species to travel in space. An Ancient race, named "the Progenitors" by archaeologists have left countless ruins on planets across the galaxy, housing advanced technology that the humans took decades to understand. They soon stumbled upon the Hyperdrive. A massive progenitor device capable of opening rifts in space-time through which ships could easily relocate from one end of the galaxy to the other in the matter of mere seconds relative to earth. It defied the theory of relativity and human understanding of the universe, showing how much the expanding young race still did not understand.

The Earthlings quickly learned how to use the hyperdrive, but they had no Idea how it really worked. Hoping to learn more from the progenitors so that perhaps one day the humans could build a hyperdrive of their own, they ventured into more and more remote ruins. During one of these expeditions, human explorers stumbled upon the Sphere. A mysterious mechanism on a desolate planet, devoid of all life, the Sphere was one of the most significant progenitor discoveries after the hyperdrive. Some archaeologists skilled in progenitor symbology believed it was a doomsday device of some sort. Regardless, studies continued on the machine, until it was successfully turned on-line. Around the sphere a shadow emerged, swallowing the day and those foolish intellectuals that had pursued investigation at the cost of safety. Dark and frightening. it grew larger and larger at an increasing rate, expanding outwards at just under the meter an hour, a frozen shockwave of obscurity. At least, at first- the speed of expanse of the sphere accelerated as it grew larger, exponentially larger. Those who ventured inside the sphere out of curiosity never returned, nor did they report back via radio or any other form of communication. Soon, the so-called Dark Sphere was so large the scientists evacuated the planet, then the star system. The star itself could no longer by seen. Soon, other stars went out as well in nearby systems, swallowed whole by the inky tide.

In the following weeks, panic spread across Terran space. Massive ships were built to evacuate populations in every sector, however, the physicists warned that there is little hope to escape with conventional engines. The sphere's rate of growth meant it would catch them rapidly. After some very precise calculations, they made a forecast. In a month, the sphere would reach earth. In the next, it would swallow 18 known galaxies. Nobody could tell what's after, but one thing was for certain- only the speed of the hyperdrive offered salvation, and that salvation was dubious at best.

The evacuation ships were all gathered to earth's orbit, clustered around the great ring of the hyperdrive. Not all could make it to Terra, but it was hoped more could join as the ships jumped away from the approaching doom. In the sky, the sphere only occupied a small portion of visible space. Mere dozens of stars blotted out by the nothingness, a hard thing to be afraid of. In reality though, it has almost reached the Terran's birthplace, according to the brightest minds humanity had to offer. The Hyperdrive was prepared, charged up with the thrumming generators of the entire world. It would warp the ships further and further away every 72 hours. The fate of those left behind under the wailing wall of night was not one to be contemplated.

Now the ships have made it very close to the edge of the known galaxy. The last few jump-points on the Hyperdrive's journey outwards beckon, and beyond them, the emptiness of the space between galaxies. Some more ships are joining the fleet, desperate additions from neglected worlds seeking survival. But if anyone will survive the End of All Things is yet to be seen.

MORALE & HEALTH:

Morale goes from 0 to 10. 0 Morale means your crew goes insane with fear and depression. 10 Morale means your crew is having a really, really good time. Having very low or very high morale can impact your crew's performance in various ways.

Health goes from 3 (healthy) to 0 (dead). Works similarly to morale.

There are 3 types of tech. There are the ones that increase efficiency of your existing systems. Second, there are techs that unlock New ships and ship sections to build. Third, there are theoretical techs that are useless on their own but may unlock powerful future techs (efficiency and system techs may also unlock new techs). You never know for sure what future techs will be unlocked. There may be dead-ends in the tech tree too. Also keep in mind that large portions of the tech-tree will remain hidden in the first few sectors.

Now, In case it wasn't cleared out earlier, Each tech takes one functional r&d section for 24 hours, 1 crew for 24 horus, 1 science equipment and 3 energy to research. Some techs may take more, but will be specified as such.

Descriptions:

Growprogramming (efficiency): Study of the foodstuffs and vital resources of the denizens of the stars and their molecular structures have allowed us to infer their production processes to a certain extent. While they cannot be replicated, this comprehension has benefited our efforts in the field of Alienmatter. Greenhouses now produce two Alienmatter at a time.

Xenobiology (advancement): Our dissection and investigation of the strange creatures that are not man has led to new lines of thought amongst our researchers. Their odd forms and chemical systems have led to ideas about genetic modification, and growing biochemical systems based off of these exotic lifeforms. Allows the growing of Alienmatter in our Greenhouses, one at a time. Gene Engineers only pay 4 E to run the Greenhouse if growing Alienmatter.

Living Systems (advancement): The utility of Alienmatter is astounding. It can be burnt in our engines like fuel, or used as a Reactor substitute, though we cannot harvest Heavy Elements from its combustion. 4 Alienmatter can be burnt in place of a Fuel, though we do not understand all the intricacies of this new form of life.

Energy Ecosystems (advancement): Living material, if spliced with photosynthetic genes, can be used in module construction for many purposes. As hard as the space-steel we normally build our spaceships with, this refined form of Alienmatter is actually energy positive when integrated into our systems. Alienmatter may be used in place of HE in module construction at double the HE cost- modules built in said manner produce 1E. Existing modules may be enhanced with Energy Ecosystems for 1 AM per construction HE each.

Modified Somatology (efficiency): A deeper understanding of the life of different worlds has revealed useful genes, which when spliced into our Soma plants increase their organic yield remarkably. +1 Soma when making Soma in Greenhouses.

Alien Engineering (efficiency): From studying samples of alien technology, we have gained insight into their construction methods and techniques. Alien Weapons can now be used by crew members- Flak Guns also cost no Energy to fire. Can only be gained from studying Artifacts.

Xenite Energy Systems (theoretical): Our continued exploration of the fundamentals of the strange machines we have encountered in the cosmos has brought to light a method of combining our energy output with alien resonating arrays. The implications of this method are unknown, but may be of interest.

Corvette Classics (system): Everybody knows how to build Corvettes... but not out here in the middle of nowhere with such limited resources. We'll need to design a compact production line if we want to build those beasts. (Unlocks Corvette Facility section (1 HE, 1 Tools, 1 crew for 24h to build), Light Corvette squadron (1 Corvette part, 1 Energy, 1 crew for 24 hours to assemble) and production of Corvette parts (in production plants, cost 1HE just like everything else)).

Heavy Corvette (Efficiency & System): +1 HP to all corvettes. Unlocks Heavy Corvette (1 Corvette part, 1 HE 1 Energy, 1 ST 1 crew for 24 hours to assemble). The Heavy Corvette Has +1 Damage output (deals 3 HP flak Damage at the expense of 3 munitions) and carries 3 more munitions (9 in total). Has the same speed and fuel use of light corvettes.

Formidable Superstructures (Efficiency): With the aid of specialized manufacturing techniques and experience in reducing structural vulnerabilities, our Corvettes are far more efficient. Corvettes can neutralize one Evasion Point on enemy Light ships, and gain 1 HP.

Frigate Classics (system): Frigates are more sophisticated spacecraft. They don't fit into hangars and remain in space after they are produced. They require 1 unit of crew to be stationed on board which in most cases consumes provisions from their mothership. (Unlocks Frigate Facility section (2 HE, 2 Tools, 2 crew for 24h to build), Support frigate (2 frigate part, 3 light elements, 2 energy, 2 crew for 24 hours to assemble. Support frigates do repairs quickly and efficiently on all ship classes and mothership sections. They also produce provisions for themselves.) and production of frigate parts (in production plants, cost 1HE just like everything else)).

Assault Frigates (system): Frigates are useful vessels, but their current loadouts are limiting in terms of their abilities. Research into how to retrofit them for an offensive role against our foes has shown us a new path to power in space. Enables building of Assault Frigate [14 HP, up to 10 Munitions, 2 Damage per Munition (avoids one shot per hour, does +1 Damage to motherships] [3 Frigate Parts, 3 LE, 2 HE, 2 Energy, and 2 Crew for 24 Hours]

Enhanced Fleet Tactics (efficiency): Warfare is not a matter of ship versus ship, man versus man- it is fleet against fleet and army against army. With our growing experience in stellar combat, we have developed a method of linking our smaller vessel targeting systems for enhanced firepower. Frigates near to the mothership may ignore one EP every day.

Spinal Weapons (system): One of the oldest maxims of combat is bigger is better. Our ships were not designed for war, but rather for flight, but ours is not a peaceful universe. To survive we must adapt. By applying the old maxims of railguns and mass-colliders, we can mount slugthrowers of great power on our vessels. Enables construction of Mass-Driver module [4 HE, 2 LE, 1 RE, 3 Crew for 24 Hours], which can do 10 Damage and two times 2 splash damage to enemy Motherships or Capital ships only for 10 E and 1 HE. Limit one per Mothership, needed 30+ Modules to construct. May be fired from close proximity with no retaliation, but may only be fired every twelve hours due to heat-dumping requirements.

Mass Accelerators (theoretical): Powerful ship-board weapons are our stock and trade now, and we are working to develop systems that will exploit the immense energy supplies and kinetic reserves available to such devices.

Deep-space Scanning (efficiency): It seems like the factory sensors aren't very powerful. In fact, without the scanner probe, it wouldn't be possible to tell what's inside those clouds of dust and bits of dead worlds. With a little tweaking our sensors could be upgraded to actually being useful. (extends sensor range, reveals new areas to explore, tells you what resources can be found in areas (in case the sensor probe gets blown up))

Sensor Jammer (System): Allows you to build sensor Jammers that help hide your ship's contents from the eyes of your opponents. Costs: 1 Heavy Elements, 1 Rare Elements, 1 Scientific equipment, 1 space tools and 2 crew for 24 hours. The sensor jammer costs 3 energy each day to run. During days the sensor is run, the controlling player may choose to do one of the following: lie about the location of their ship, conceal or misreport one entry in their storage manifest, hide three techs, or avoid one weapon of their choice.

Artificial Sentience (Theoretical): Development and use of sophisticated robots was banned on earth and its colonies for some reason centuries ago. Nobody is going to enforce those laws anymore so we might as well give artificial sentience another try. Maybe they can figure out these progenitor puzzles. Gateway tech.

Automatons (System): These human-sized machines will do what you tell them to... most of the time. Allows you to build automaton hall ship section (Costs 1 LE, 2 HE, 1 RE, 1 ST, 1 Crew for 24 hours | 3E Upkeep) and after the hall is complete, allows manufacture of Automatons in Production Facilities (cost 1 HE). Each automaton hall can house an automaton unit. Automatons can replace crew work in Refineries, Corvette, Frigate and capital ship facilities, Manufacturing Plants, can do repairs and construct sections. They can't do Research nor can they crew frigates, and fight at 50% the efficiency of Crew. Still, they're pretty downright expendable.

Sentient Computer (System): A Large supercomputer with its own thought. Not Very clever at the start but Its knowledge will expand over time, especially if it is fed with ample energy and information. May unlock new techs or help with research. (Allows construction of Sentient Computer Module (1HE, 1RE, 1Space Tools, 1 Scientific equipment, 3 crew for 24 hours). Consumes 2 energy when running. It can run in 5 states:
-Free State. Just run the computer. It will do something on its own.
-Free State with access to sensors. Run the computer and let it learn from sensor data. You will also have to run your sensors for this to work.
-Free State with access to databanks. Let the Computer learn on its own from the ship's records of human knowledge and history.
-Free State with access to progenitor relics. Require you to have a progenitor artifact on board. The Computer will take a look.
-Program/oversee the sentience. 1 crew, 3 energy and 1 R&D module can study the code of the computer and make modifications if deemed needed.

As the computer gets more advanced, new states may be unlocked. You can retrofit the sentient computer with the following:
-Sensors and tools for communication (Gives him something to look at and talk to the humans with). Costs 1 ST and 1 Crew for 24 hours (the computer can run in the meanwhile).
-More Ram (makes him less forgetful). Costs 1 SE and 1 crew for 24 hours.

You should log the computer's activity in your ledger. Record what it did each day since its inception to get a good picture on how advanced it is and what it knows.

Reactor Retrofit (system): Our brilliant chief engineer figured out a way to improve our reactor's efficiency by 50%!... one can only wonder why the designers of the reactor didn't think of this. (Allows you to retrofit/upgrade reactors with more efficient systems. Price of Retrofit for one reactor: 1 space tools for 24 hours (does not get used up) 1 scientific equipment for 24 hours (does not get used up either!), 1 Crew for 24 hours. Retrofitted reactors produce +10 Energy per day with the same fuel use. Very slight chance (1%) of reactor meltdown every 24 hours.)

Refinery Retrofit (system):Yet another brilliant idea from our chief engineer. (Allows you to retrofit/upgrade refineries with more efficient systems. Price of Retrofit for one refinery: 1 space tools for 24 hours (does not get used up) 1 scientific equipment for 24 hours (does not get used up either!), 1 Crew for 24 hours. Retrofitted refineries produce twice the income with the same workforce. Energy use however is doubled. Slight chance (4%) of refinery mal-function every 24 hours.)

Mobile Refineries (system):Our chief engineer thinks that we could build ships that collect and refine elements from remote areas and bring them back to the mothership! (Mobile refineries are assembled in Frigate facilities (so you'll also need frigate classics research.). They cost 2 Frigate parts, 2 Light elements and 2 crew for 24 hours to build. 1 crew has to be stationed on the ship in the end (they will continue to consume provisions from the mothership).)

Processing Centrifuge (advancement): As we go further from the rich galactic core, we're encountering a lot of celestial bodies that aren't immediately useful, but contain trace amounts of useful elements. Our engineers don't want to waste materials, so we've devised a solution, of sorts. With this upgrade, our refineries will be able to process five junk ore for 1 HE. Retrofitting costs 2 ST for 24 Hours with 2 Crew, but the tools are not used up.

Mass-Scale Construction (advancement): The molecular chemistry necessitated by ore separation advances has led us to the formulation of a new synthmetal alloy, one which our more defensively minded engineers have found a great use for. By plating our modules with this metal composite, we can enhance their livability against explosive impact- they might even survive dreaded torpedo attacks. Increases the HP of all modules by +1.

Ore Smelters (efficiency): From our background in the mining industry, we've refined our centrifuges. We can now gain one HE from every three junk ore.

Selective Refining (advancement): Enhanced magnetic centrifuges and a greater understanding of gravitic separation methods has allowed us to refine not just heavy elements from the tailings of mining efforts and useless rock, but also light elements at a 5:1 rate.

Quark Physics (theoretical): Thanks to the hyperdrive, Insane thought experiments can now be actualized and tested in reality. Gateway tech.

Fission Catalyst (system): Some complicated equations tell us that if we were to blend tiny quantities of various synthetic subatomic particles with the fuel rods used in our reactors, we could make sure that the end product of fission cycle is a useful, non-radioactive pack of Heavy Elements. (Unlocks another reactor Retrofit that costs 1 scientific equipment (will get used up!), 1 Space tools (Will also get used up) and 2 crew for 24 hours. This retrofit will not make your reactor unsafe*. It will allow you to Harvest 1 free unit of Heavy elements for every 3 fuel you use up in your reactor and increase the reactor's energy output by 5.)
*(any more then it already is)

Monopole Magnetics (theoretical): A strange technology, involving the alteration of existing magnetic comprehension to allow greater feats of science. Not usable by itself, but opens the gateway to greater applications.

Magfluid Synthesis (system): Magfluid synthesis allows construction of Magfluid Plant (1 He, 1ST, 1 SE, 2 Crew for 24) mothership section. There, 1 Crew and 3 Energy can turn 1 Heavy and 1 Rare Elements into 2 Magfluid in 24 hours.

Nano-Bionics (theoretical): Yet another thing that used to be illegal on earth. Nano-bionics could greatly enhance human capabilities. Opens the doors to further applications of biological augmentation.

Nanomedicine (system): These nanobots will heal your crew from all known disease, provided that you have an infirmary where its produced and distributed. Allows you to build Infirmary ship section (2 LE, 1 HE, 1 SE, 1 ST, 3 crew for 24 hours) which will automatically improve your crew's health if it drops below healthy if its provided with 4 energy and 2 provisions. (only need these supplies when ship is not healthy. Crews from other ships can be transported here for treatment)

Adaptive Homeostasis (advancement): Practical applications of nanoshere tech and nanomedicine have yielded highly useful gene mods for our soldiers, enhancing both their combat survival and skills, at the expense of their cognitive versatility. Allows the modification of Crew at an Infirmary to Soldiers- Soldiers have, for the purposes of combat resolution, 50% combat power, but cannot be used for research or manufacturing. Modification costs 2 Soma and 1 Provisions, as well as 1 SE and Crew (aside from those being modified) for 24 Hours. The SE is not consumed.

Neural Implants (system): These nanobots will dig into your crew's nerve system to improve their dexterity and reduce their response time, if you have an implant center section (1 LE, 1 HE, 1 RE, 1 SE, 1 ST, 3 Crew for 24 hours) that is. The implant center automatically upgrades a Crewmember's capabilities at the price of 2 Soma and 5 energy, though you can skip on the soma if you don't mind your crew suffering through the operation. Crew armed with small arms and space tools get 50% stronger in close combat, Fighters gain +1 EP (Evasion point. Counts as HP but needs no repair after battle). Ships from other crews can also visit your implant center and receive implants.

Gene-refined Crops (efficiency): + 1 Provisions production in greenhouses.

Soma Distillery (system): Advancements in the understanding of the workings of the spice crop Soma have allowed us to increase the Greenhouse's output of the valuable plant by one unit for the same amount of power. In addition, engineers have devised a Soma Distillery. This device should allow us to convert two Soma into one Spice for one Energy a Day. The precise effects of Spice on the human body are unknown, but it certain has made the men who have sampled it much more content with life. A Soma Distillery should cost 5 Soma, 2 HE, and 1 ST to construct for 1 Crew working over 24 Hours.

MagFluid Shielding (system): Shield your ships with MagFluidTM! Allows construction build "MagFluid Shield Generator" ship section that can shield your mothership from damage at the expense of energy. (The generator Costs 1 LE, 1 RE, 1 ST, 1 SE, 2 Crew for 24 and 1 Magfluid if you have 10 ship sections or less, 2 fluid if you have 20 or less, 3 if you have 30 or less and so on. Every time your ship crosses the 10, 20, 30... section threshold, you'll have to add 1 more magfluid to the generator to make it work. The Generator can be turned on with 2 energy for 24 hours. It will then shield the ship from up to 10 HP damage during the day. For each HP damage shielded, your mothership will lose 1 energy. If you run out of energy, The shield goes off-line. Shields regenerate 1 SP per hour at the cost of 1 E if damaged.)

Coil Guns (system): The Coil guns (1 HE, 1 Magfluid, 1 ST, 2 Crew for 24) buildable with this tech are good against corvettes. Coilguns shoot using 1 ammo and 4 energy. They deal 2 HP damage to usual targets + 2 HP against corvettes.

Primitive Superconductors (Theoretical): As strange as it seems, applications of our coilgun accelerators and their low-temperature magnetism have spurred some research applications in the field of electrical conductivity. Precise applications are trivial, for now, but may herald something important.

Ion Cannons (system): Requires Ion storm data to research. The Ion Cannon ship section (1 HE, 1 RE, 1 ST, 2 Crew for 24) buildable with this tech are good bigger ships. Ion cannons cannot target corvettes, fighters and transports. They can however target capital ships. They use 8 energy each hour to deal 4 HP damage to their target, but drain shields at double rate.

Discharge Countermeasures (efficiency): We've managed to modify our ion cannons to work in synergy with our shielding apparatuses. With this upgrade, our energy banks can absorb two damage worth of energy fire hitting our shields for each Ion cannon on the ship. This absorption costs us energy, but does not drain our shields. Costs 2 Tools and 2 Crew 24 Hours to complete, unconsumed.

Fundamental Ionics (Theoretical): Now that the ship's security is more assured based on our powerful storm-derived weapons systems, we can turn our minds to more mundane and peaceful applications of the implications drawn from the ion storm. Researching this technology will require a total of fifty energy from our calculations, but may have truly earth-shaking applications.

Energy Capacitors (system): These rarer than rare elements allow a feat never before achieved on a functional level- the creation of batteries that can store the immense amounts of power our vessels utilize. This knowledge allows us to construct a Capacitor Array [1 HE, 1 Lanthanide, 1 Space Tools | 1 Crew for 24 Hours] each Array of which can store up to 50 Energy.

Ray Projection (system): Magnetic shields are well and good for everyday use, but somewhat inefficient in their versatility, especially as they have proven to be highly vulnerable to ionizing radiation. Our experiments with the rare lanthanides have shown our researchers another type of shielding system, one with limited applications, but useful in its field. Allows the construction of Ray Shield [1 HE, 1 LE, 2 LA, 1 ST | 2 Crew for 24 Hours] [Protects against 8 Damage, requires 2 E to activate] [Takes regular damage from Ion Cannons, cannot block Flak or Torpedoes]

Alloy Smelter (system): The strange blue crystals found throughout this galaxy have betrayed several uses to us after study. We can now construct an Alloy Refinery, which will break down their complex patterned structures into usable materials for our vessel. Allows construction of Alloy Smelter for 2 HE, 1 BC, 2 RE, and 1 ST with 1 Crew for 24 Hours. One Alloy Smelter may process 1 BC for 5 E into 1 HE and 1 LE.

Crystal Plating (system): Careful study of the interactions of matter within the Alloy Smelter has allowed us to refine its efficiency, and produce an exotic form of metal that may be quite valuable. Alloy Smelters now only cost 4 E to run, and can produce 1 Alien Alloys instead of 1 HE and 1 LE.

Every mothership should create a ledger every 24 IC hours (except for in the first sector, where you only need to make one ledger for the first 3 days). In the first part of the ledger, Write down what your mothership and its crew was up to in the last 24 hours and where was energy spent (what stuff you ordered). In the second part of the ledger, you should list every type of section your mothership is capable of constructing. Then, first list how many operational sections you have, then how many damaged ones, then list how many you built or lost during the day and also how many were damaged or repaired during the day. Then, do the same with resources, goods, spacecraft and research.

Alternatively, you can write a ledger any way you want, as long as it contains all the information about your mothership.

Here the hyperdrive has led them, a sense of dread fallen over the fleet. High above an alien world the fleet rests near the ancient construct that has saved them from annihilation. Both the moon, though, are shattered as if by a hammer blow. What this bodes the humans cannot say, but the death of an entire world is not an event, historical or not, to be taken lightly.

The scanner probe has debugged its systems and is fully operational once more. In the close proximity of the fleet lies several resource-rich space objects along with an unidentified space craft; an unidentified spacecraft with small amounts of power still flowing in its veins. There is also another unidentified artificial object in the distance along with several clouds of dust.

In close proximity of hyperdrive and to one-another:

Asteriod One:
One Light Element harvestable, 5 Junk Ore

Nearby Comet:
2 Junk Ore

Asteroid 2:
4 Heavy Elements harvestable

Unidentified spacecraft:
Emits strange signal

Distant Objects, Distant to Each Other but Close to the Unidentified Spacecraft

Medium-sized unidentified Artificial object
Unknown contents

Distant Dust cloud:
Unknown composition.

Distant group of yellow space rocks
Unknown composition

The scanner probe also detects significant distortion of distant star constellations. What this means cannot be said, but the distortion appears to be undirectional, and indicative of red-shifted objects before the light of the stellar bodies. Near objects or locations require three Fuel to travel to, while far ones require six. All vessels begin at the Hyperdrive, unless previously noted.

Bridge, Kharbarinth
Far Asteroids, Shattered Planet Sector

The news from the fleet was glorious. Perhaps they should have been waiting longer at the jump points before this- three new vessels had hailed from various lost human worlds, and were joining the fleet on their quest for survival. With the amount of ships that had given in to the despair of the void, it was good to see men with hope left in their hearts. They had few resources, and the galactic level was beginning to thin out as they left the densely packed space of the inner rings of the massive collections of stars. But Stoic was not unduly worried. The men of the Bells had found many new brothers and sisters this day, and each soul cast out into the void was another light that cried defiance against the extinguishing horror that had assailed humanity. Sensors still showed at least some resources worth mining, and so the commander directed some further mining as the last fragments of the yellow asteroids were devoured by the maw of the Kharbarinth. It was time to go meet the new arrivals.

Regards,
Stoic, Lord-Commander of the Bell-Ship Kharbarinth

ESS Forge of Petora
Hyperdrive Jump Point
Day 14

The ship's computer, having been programmed to wake up the bridge crew upon the arrival of the Fleet, watched as the fleet appeared with a burst into reality above the Forge.

Code: Select all
>/// all parameters met
execute defrost_protocol.exe \\\<
>/// executing
 life support \\\<
>/// online
bridge control \\\<
>/// online
coldsleep caskets \\\<
>/// popping
parameters met \\\<
>/// executed

Captain Petr Svobodník awoke from coldsleep just as the tube hissed open. He sat up in the bay, and say ten other identical caskets hissing open, steam billowing out of the frosted tubes. He and the bridge crew clambered up to the bridge, assuming action stations, checking systems, and popping the coldsleep cakets of two-hundred ninety other crewmen.

"Comms, get me on the intercom, I'm making an address." The comms officer acknowledged, and turned around giving a thumbs up signal to the Captian. "Attention all crew, this is the Admiral speaking. We have made it to the rendezvous point. We have been in coldsleep for nearly a month, and during that time, the computer has logged no long-range communications with the other motherships from Petora. As much as I hate to say it, we are likely the only survivors from Petora." A collective gasp echoed through the Forge's hull at this. "However, we have confirmed that the Fleet is still active. We are preparing to hail the Fleet, in the meantime, I ask everyone of you to do everything to the best of your ability, as we cannot let the death of Petora be in vain, we must survive. So do not let it be! Admiral Svobodník out." He waved his hand, and the comm channel went silent. "Get me Chief Engineer Sára Novotná, we have to discuss a means to get our rations sorted." The comms officer nodded, and a few moments later a small, wiry woman donning a a pair of glasses and a dark blue jumpsuit was standing on the bridge with the good captain.

"Sára, the Forge needs to figure out what exactly that Artifact from Old Petora does, and we need it done fast, I'd rather not like to have the ship destroyed by some ancient Progenitor bomb we brought aboard on our first day, go figure it out. You always did like a puzzle."

"Aye sir, I did, I'll get the best we have on it right away." The woman saluted and walked out of the bridge.

"Ensign Pokorný, get me a hail on all frequencies. We need to make our presence known."

"Aye sir, whenever you're ready."

Code: Select all
To all Fleet ships, this is Admiral Petr Svobodník of the ESS Forge of Petora, formerly of the Petoran Evacuation Fleet. We've been in coldsleep for a while now, and we'd just like to say a hello. We've been traveling on sub-light drives for a while, so if one of you sporting gentlemen or ladies could inform me of the Fleet's current situation, that'd be very kind of you. Forge out.

"Lieutenant Kratochvíl, see if you can find us any asteroids with materials we could use." The young navigation officer quickly typed some keys into the panel, and a sector map appeared on the screen. "Burn to Asteroid One, and get the crew ready to activate the refinery. Also, get the reactor online."

"Recieving message from the Kharbarinth, sir."

"Play it."

Code: Select all
Hail, friends! We are blessed with your presence, and happy to have more men along on our voyages. It is the wish of the people of the Kharbarinth to get to know our new compatriots better- we invite you to dinner aboard our vessel at the Hyperdrive in twenty four hours time, to speak with you and aid your escaping colonists if possible.
Regards,
Stoic, Lord-Commander of the Bell-Ship Kharbarinth

"I'll go then, get a security detail of ten men, and I'll be on my way. Let me send a response."

TO ALL SHIPS OF THE FLEET

We of Excelsior have been carefully monitoring the activities of fellow motherships as of late, and are frightened by recent discoveries. Multiple ships have weaponized, and several ships now have the capability to cripple or destroy other ships of the fleet. Additionally, intelligence aboard the Excelsior reports that Ion Storm Data, originating from an unknown source, has been spread among the ships of the fleet. Our scientists have managed to secure a secret agreement with Kharbarinth to trade for the data, and preliminary reports by our scientists indicate the the Ion Storm Data has vital information which can lead to the development of a new and powerful weapon system.

Believing it to be in the best interests of the Fleet not to destroy ourselves in civil war, but to push onwards for the survival of the Human Race, we propose a treaty between the several ships of the Fleet:

Working Title: The Sector 4 Accords
All motherships which shall accept this treaty shall send a transmission signing the name of their ship and commander to the bottom of this treaty.

All motherships accepting this treaty shall enter into a Pact, that whichever ship shall first attack or threaten to attack any ship in the Pact, shall immediately enter into a state of war with every member of the Pact, unless otherwise agreed by all members of the Pact. This includes members of the Pact who attack or threaten another member.

When a state of war exists, members are required to attack the aggressor at least once a day. Any firing of munitions or energy weapons at the aggressor is considered an attack, and any attempt to forcefully board and secure the aggressor's ship is to be considered an attack.

We the undersigned,
-Excelsior, Commander Bishop Wade
-Arch-Fabricant Stoic Mesdramal, Commander of the Kharbar

Addendum: Included with this message is all of our data on Quark Physics, Fission Catalysts, and Refinery Retrofits. This is free to use for all new ships.

Excelsior Bridge

Commander Bishop Wade took note of the newly approaching vessel Forge of Petora, no doubt only one of several ships that would be meeting the veteran ships. The small fleet of survivors had suffered many losses, notably Ordos Marsa and Providence, but humanity would persevere. It had to.

"Chief Technician Silverstein, transmit the Sector 4 Accords and some essential technology to the newly arrived ships." Wade ordered the female officer via Excelsior's comm channel.

"Of course Commander." Elizabeth Silverstein replied from the Sensor Array Control Room, turning to the ship's long-range transmitter console. "Sending now..."

Bridge, the Naechtlich

Sinterklaas leaned back in his seat as he watched the screens in front of him whir into life.

The systems that ran them were, of course, always online, but it had been a long time since the systems had ever indicated anything important. The Naechtlich's sensory array had only just picked up upon the signal of the Terran fleet, joining it at the hyperdrive, and it had taken this long to rouse part of the crew. But, here they were.

One of the crew quarters had taken on life, lighting up and starting their support systems.

"Bridge, we're getting some transmissions."

Sinterklaas turned his face to a control panel at the bottom of his desk. His pale white hair glinted off the reflective surface, as Sinterklaas ran his fingers along the Braille-style etchings which had just appeared. While his eyes had life in them yet, Sinterklaas - like his comrades - had learned not to rely on them.

The voice he had heard came from somewhere behind him, although its owner was not there. The Naechtlich bridge used directional speakers for routine communication - from the location the bridge had assigned the voice, Sinterklaas could easily tell that the speaker was somewhere in the sensor array. But, that was easily assumed - he faintly recognized it as the Communications Officer, Abendmeier, even if the cryosleep had messed with his mind a bit.

"Receiving at Bridge, Chair here. Continue, sensors."

"A number of general transmissions from the motherships in the Terran Fleet. Still doing some preliminary work getting the Comms crew together, but we've identified some sources. First, there's the Kharbarinth, offering a dinner at the Kharbarinth in 24 hours. Secondly there's the Forge of Petora, which seems to be a new arrival. Last message we've received was from the Excelsior - something about a Pact. Can pass on the details if required. We've also noted a transmission from an anonymous vessel.

Oh, the Excelsior has also sent us a more complex transmission. I'll spare you the details, but it seems to be a number of technical specifications. I'll pass it on to the Science Officer, and have him get back to you on that one. Pretty complicated, so I don't know how helpful it'll be."

Chair Sinterklaas passed over the transmission transcript that had appeared in front of him, in the Braille etchings, watching a localized map appear on the screen in front of him.

"Hmm. We'll investigate this anonymous vessel, it seems to be an automated distress signal of some sort. Also, draft a message to the Kharbarinth accepting their proposal. We'll deal with this pact idea later."

Sinterklaas motioned at his screen, opening a database of names. It took him a few moments to select a few groups. With the skeleton crew that had been automatically awakened, they numbered 100 together. In just an hour, they would be working in the Greenhouse to produce Soma and preparing for the trip to the Kharbarinth that Sinterklaas had just queued for the Transport vessel, as the Naechtlich lumbered into a course for the unidentified space vessel.

Cacophony in the void. Messages thundered back and forth, as ship after ship warped in to join the fleet. Coinciding perfectly with the malfunction of the Silence's Sensor Jammer, it would seem that their self-imposed isolation was at an end. For the time being. Preparations were nearly complete, and they would soon be free to roam once more. For now, however, it was deemed necessary that the Wanderers provide some sort of response - if only so they would not be forgotten entirely.

"Commander Wade, Sensors detect Silenceis moving towards the same Asteroid we are. There is nothing out there of note, they will likely attempt to harvest the same ore we are planning to harvest. Should we pull back?"

Commander Wade sat back and considered the situation. On one hand, Excelsior had begun moving towards the asteroid first. On the other, they were not prepared for a confrontation with Silence, nor did they wish to make one during what would be a new and (hopefully) happy era in this voyage.

"Open communications channels and slow speed, maybe we can negotiate with them." Commander Wade ordered. "Send that message up to Silverstein."

Sensor Array Control Room

Meanwhile, Silverstein was dealing with another problem. Excelsior had just picked up a transmission from Silence, and it wasn't very friendly. "Why those..." She was cut short on her statement to herself by a burst of comm static and a message from the bridge.

"Chief Technician, Commander Wade orders private communications to be opened with Silence. It seems they're heading to mine what we are. Commander Wade wants you to negotiate."

"Commander Wade negotiating? Are you serious? He must be more frightened of Silence than I thought. Tell Commander Wade I'll get on it, but I also have to deal with a message from our 'friends' on Silence. I'll forward their transmission to us down to the bridge now."

"Roger that, Chief."

"Seems we're finally here then." Captain Rykker glanced across the Icarus' colossal bridge. It had been intended to be one of the largest warships ever built, but a extremely quick conversion and energy-rerouting had allowed it to become a well-stocked, if not paticualrly productive, mothership.

"Shall I begin bringing non-essential personnel out of cryo, sir?" Cryo-Officer Harken asked. They'd been woken up 2 days before system entry, as per military cryo-awakening protocols, and most of them were pissed about it.

"Negative. We need to preserve our supplies." Rykker shook his head. "Any external transmissions?"

"Some, sir." His Comms Officer, Darklyn, answered. "One about a dinner."

"Nope, and send no reply." Rykker shook his head. "I don't go onto other's ships. Never good practice." A captain's ship was his home and fortress; he would only leave when she was in a secure environment.

"Something about a security pact."

"Don't need no security. We'll bloody ram them if we have to. Got a decent scan of the system, Nav Officer?"

"Yes, sir. Most of the ships seem to be mining by various asteroids. We've also got two unidentified craft, one near, one further away. I've got one moving to the near ship."

"Fire up the engines and plot us a course for the further object. Divert some energy to the sensors too, and have them scan the object once we're in range."

"Yes sir."

Dust Cloud, Far Reaches of Shattered Planet System

As the Excelsior conducts burn into the confines of the outer reaches of the shimmering dust nebula, she detects traces of several useful elements. They were concentrated on a few scattered asteroids within the murky reaches of the stellar artifact, but a far more pertinent detail came into view as the Excelsior entered the region. There were other ships there, three of them hanging in the void. Invisible to sensors due to the quantity of the dust, a stream of nonsense syllables in a different language bathed the Excelsior's hull in electromagnetic radiation.

Then a beam of concentrated energy struck the Excelsior. One of the alien vessels, sleek metallic birds of prey, was moving to engage. The searing lance of energy scorches the Excelsior's hull, targeting the energy signature of her power plant- klaxons wail and gases vent into space as the weapon breaches several bulheads and causes formidable structural damage to the ship. "Seems there's some life on board, sir." Nav Officer Pyk reported as the Icarus moved within scanning range of the ship.

"Ah." Rykker paused. "Cryo Officer, wake Unit I and open Armoury II."

Harken pushed a button, a green light turning red, signalling that one of the ship's 30 crew teams had been awoken.

"Darklyn, give me a transmission to Unit I."

Darklyn flicked a switch, and nodded to Rykker. "Unit I, proceed to Armoury II and arm yourselves. Once you have done so, proceed to Hanger I and board one of the transports in preparation for a boarding action."

The broadcast ended, before Rykker spoke again. "Directional broadcast towards that ship, if you would."

Another flick of a switch, and Rykker began to speak. "Unidentified object, this is Rykker of the Icarus. We are dispatching a boarding party to inspect your vessel. Uncooperative attitudes will result in us clearing the ship, as you are outnumbered."

[-5 HP Reactor, Excelsior]

The crew of the bridge lets out a collective gasp as the screens reveal Excelsior is surrounded! Three sleek alien ships (no doubt warships) close in on the Terran ship. Commander Wade, having been a military man, immediately takes charge as an alien ship opens fire on Excelsior's reactor.

"All power to shields! We need to protect the ship! Send a message to research. Cancel the Frigate designs, send crew to the Reactor bay instead to engage damage control. Send out a distress beacon!" Commander Wade bellows at the stunned crew members, startling them into action. "I'd be happy even if Silence arrived to help us!"

Sensor Array Control Room

Chief Tech Silverstein was sweating nervously. The same forces that blocked Excelsior from seeing these alien warships until it was too late might just prevent her from getting a signal to the fleet. It was a desperate gamble that the mothership's powerful deep-space scanners could boost a signal out in time. If not, it was up to an even more desperate bet: That a lone transport could outrun the aliens and make it out of the cloud to the fleet.

"Full power to Sensor Array. I want this transmission as loud as possible, all channels. We're caught defenseless here!"

Silverstein recorded the broadcast, and set the transmitter to repeat it once every 20 seconds until the shut off or destroyed.

Hanger Bay

A lone transport was prepared. Sergeant Withers would fly it out into the Dust Cloud, hoping the Xenos either ignored it or failed to notice it among the clouds. He would try to make it to the nearest fleet ship, send a message for help.

Excelsior's survival may come down to just that...

Dust Cloud, Far Reaches of Shattered Planet System
Hour One

With fires raging in the reactor, the shields of the Excelsior bubbled into existence- just in time. The leftmost alien vessel had fired, another hot red lance like the first searing the Excelsior. With a brilliant blue flash of light the shields pulsed, resisting the dangerous energies of the foe- and then a hole appeared in the coverage of the luminescent sphere, energies racing through the vacuum to rend chunks from the engines of the vessel. More alarms began flashing on the bridge of the ship; whatever weapons the aliens were firing appeared to be able to pierce the protection of the Magfluid, though not entirely. It was a far less devastating strike than that of the first salvo- but firing up the engines further from their initial runup would be dangerous with the extent of the damage unclear.

As the danger grew, one of the men on sensors sang out within the hull of the mothership. "Commander! Reading small ship signatures, four of them, closing fast!" Indeed, it was so. From the direction of two of the enemy vessels four different energy signatures could be made out, swift and sure in their assault upon the Excelsior. They were all moving at similar speeds, but the sensors could tell through the cloying electromagnetic fog of the dust that two were showing elevated energy traces, traces that were rising rapidly. The contacts would be upon the Excelsior within the hour. "We're also reading an incoming torpedo, sublight, from the first contact." To one side of the ship, where the refining vessels had been working on grinding up a convenient asteroid full of the exotic elements, pinpricks of light blossomed. "Just lost Refiners one and two commander, enemy flak fire from the primary vessel."

No whisper of a transmission escaped the jumbled fields of the dust cloud- a perfect ambush location, set long in advance. No more sound than the background noise of the watching stars. The transport, though, raced back through the dust with haste- it would take about another hour to breach the further fields of the nebula.

The alien artifact, a Progenitor shard of oblong black metal, was beginning to react strangely as the scientists studied it. Even though it was carefully confined in a sealed airlock, small specks of black dust were manifesting in the air of the laboratory, seemingly spontaneously as the scientists began probing the Artifact's workings.

Chief Security Officer Jasmin Espenson looked over the flashing lights on her terminal in Excelsior's Bridge. That torpedo was a problem. A major problem. It would have to be dealt with soon. The small approaching ships... were they fighters and bombers, ready to tear apart the ships? Or were they boarding craft? Boarding craft could be dealt with. Fighters could not. But even if both were dealt with, it was only a matter of time before Excelsior was destroyed by the energy weapons of the enemy ships.

"Commander," Espenson addressed Wade, "We have three options. We wait, and hope we aren't destroyed before help arrives, we can take the fight to the enemy and attempt to board their craft, or we can evacuate the ship with some personnel and supplies, and hope some other mothership will take us in. Or we could always set up shop on the remains of Providence or Ordos Marsa. I think they still have 2 crew quarters and a sensor array between them."

"None of those sound like good options. But the enemy has not detected our transport we sent out, apparently. Perhaps some boarding craft can... no, no, it will take too long to slice our way onto the ships. We'll have to hope we can survive long enough to be assisted. A pity our Ion cannon isn't complete yet, we'd show them pain." Commander Wade appeared to sag in defeat. "Do what you will to stall the inevitable. I'll call up the crew manning the refinery, and send one unit to repair our engine damage, and one to double the work effort on the Ion Cannons. Maybe we can pull the crew off production too, and triple the work. That gets us... 8 hours until completion? Good God, we're dead..."

Espenson listened to the Commander's rather disheartening words, and then turned back to her command station's console. There were still more measures that could proplong Excelsior's life. She tapped the message out that would condemn several pilots to death.

Hangar bay
Corporal Ellery looked at the message he had received. He knew what he had to do. He was afraid, but wasn't everyone? To be brave was to face your fears. To be a coward would be to hide from them, and that would spell disaster for the rest of the ship. "Alright men, get in your fighters. We're about to embark on our last mission."

As Ellery climbed into his craft, he gave a last look at the crew members in the Hangar, who would stay behind. Maybe they'd suffer the same fate as him in the end. But it was worth a chance.

The fighter squadron rocketed out of the hangar. Ellery gave his ship a last salute. "Come on boys... We're going to crash into a torpedo."

Dust Cloud, Far Reaches of the Shattered Planet Sector
Hour 2

An immense explosion blossomed in the void of spades between the opposing ships. It would have been almost beautiful, if the watchers didn't know that the fiery bloom represented the deaths of the fighters to save the ship. Many had missed the fast moving target, but one of the needle-ships had impacted the sunlight projectile sparking a cataclysmic fireball that consumed all of the intrepid crew.

The transport finally cleared the last vestiges of the dust field.

Shuddering booms were heard over the Excelsior as explosives of some sort of ray-shielded projectile drummed through the shields. Two of the enemy signatures were large lean vessels, swooping over the mothership and plastering it with bombs. The shields held, but barely.

Then the red modules on two of the enemy ships leapt in to life. Red spikes jabbed across the space between ships. The shield generator stuttered and failed just as hot plasma scythed through the skin of the ship to strike the nerve center of the generator itself. Both lasers wrecked havoc over the compartment, destroying energy coils, severing capacitors, and leaving the section open to the hard vacuum.

Two ships settled on the hull of the Excelsior, and figures swarmed from them in gleaming exosuits. No drills did they bear, but packages of black that they affixed rapidly.

New Paradise

As New Paradise waited in the silence of space near the alien vessel another ship emerged. Luckily after some quick scans it was revealed to be another mother-ship and sighs of relief rang out. Food production was now a must for survival as food would be running out. Luckily as gene-engineers food could be grown in greater quantities and faster allowing more food. However that wasn't all. The scientists were quickly escorted out along with the corpse to autopsy with some crew to clear and recover the offline weapons systems and some crew with weapons to guard them if stuff went down. The production facility would also be retooled to try and produce fighter and munitions.

Sergeant Withers let out a sigh of relief. He and his lucky transport had made it out alive. flicking a switch on the transport's control panel, he spoke into the radio transmitter's microphone. "Hailing Kharbarinth and New Paradise, Excelsior has come under attack by three enemy vessels in the dust cloud, assistance requested immediately. Excelsior is defenseless, with no offensive weapons to retaliate. Repeat: Assistance requested immediately."

Excelsior Bridge

Espenson watched as external cameras showed several figures moving on the outside of the ship's hull. They might be planting charges to break in, or maybe just to destroy the ship. Who knew? Whatever they were doing, it had to be stopped. The bombers couldn't be dealt with. But this could.

"Commander, can you send a message to Cryo? Have them Wake anyone with combat experience. Don't worry about the lack of quarters, we're putting them back in the freezer after this."

"What is it, Espenson?"

"Enemy units on the outer hull. I'm going to send an armed team up to fire on them."

The orders were dispatched, and soon 100 Crew Members, newly called in from Cryo, were being handed small arms as a transport was ready to drop them just outside on Excelsior's hull. The transport would move quick and fast, it needed to avoid getting shot. The 'soldiers', though 'consripts' would have been a better term, were equipped with suits made to withstand a hard vacuum and cable to secure themselves to the outer hull, and several crew members also had jetpacks to swiftly maneuver in the void. When the preparations were complete, they sprung into action.

New Paradise

The work crew and some of the guard were getting off their ship relaxing, taking naps, drinking energy drinks, etc. Others were guarding the section of hull they cut out so a surprise attack was more unlikely. This find was actually quite interesting as they seemed to be made of mystery materials and weren't of Terran make. However this rest period was short lived as info came in from the Excelsior about 3 alien vessels attacking them and as their defenseless they would probably die. So quickly the communications people began typing out messages to the Excelsior and various other ships about their findings and what is happening.

Well sh*t this is terrible. Our findings of the derelict ship we found indicate that this is indeed an alien species which by our investigations seems to be much more advanced then us. We initially had our crew attempt to salvage some of their weapons systems but they were lined with anti-tampering equipment and they were non-salvageable. There was more but we presumed those tamper-proof too. We have no weapons systems ourselves so we'll relay the message to the fleet.

Dust Cloud, Far Reaches of the Shattered Planet Sector
Hour 3

The radio crackled inside Withers' transport- "Kharbarinth acknowledges. Will group with rest of fleet for sally as soon as possible. Stand fast, and godspeed.'

Back on the Excelsior matters were looking grim. The second enemy ship had fired again. With no shields in place to do any mitigation of damage, the red column of death had struck the shield generator at full force, and the module was no more than scraps of metal and chunks of floating girders. Destroyed beyond repair, the people and crew were now fully open to attack. The bombers swooped over the surface of the ship again, energy projectiles slamming into the engines- though not destroyed, the men working on engine were in grave peril, and lost some of their numbers in the attack before falling back to more protected sections of the mothership. This seemed to have emptied the hold of the alien attack craft, for they peeled away from the Excelsior alongside the transports, returning to their ships.

The danger was not past though, not by a long-shot. As the transport from the Excelsior dropped men on the exterior of the ship to fight the intruders, they found themselves gravely outmatched. While their own guns were somewhat effective in the void, those of the foe threw bolts of white light that could punch a head-sized hole in a man in the voidsuits without pause, and seemed to be wearing some sort of reinforced composite armor that shrugged off all but direct hits from small arms. Despite their best efforts, the conscripts of the Excelsior were outnumbered more than four to one in short order, and their numbers dwindled quickly out on the hull without any sort of cover. While they fought, some of the alien boarders continued working, laying more of the packages on the exterior of the ship. Sensors also detected another torpedo inbound from the primary enemy vessel.

Day 15

Little passed during the turning of the days, but the distortion on the far stars is growing larger. Either the disruption is expanding in scale, or whatever is throwing the shadow of visual chicanery is approaching rapidly. A new signal has been detected, approaching the junk ore-laden comet near the hyperdrive.

Bridge, the Naechtlich

The Chair looked over the plans that had just been transmitted to him, from the Science Officer, Bischoffs. They seemed to be in three distinct parts - Quark Physics, Fission Catalysts, and Refinery Retrofits. It was hard to tell - the second part clearly relied upon the first quite heavily, and would have been incomprehensible without the first. The third stood alone, though.

They looked rather useful. The fission catalysts could be used to retain helpful elements from the reactor, and the refinery retrofit would no doubt be a powerful addition to the refineries. However, both would require some advanced sensory equipment and research gear generally more fit for the laboratory.

"We'll send a transmission to the Excelsior thanking them - Comms?" "On it."

This is Naechtlich Communications Officer Abendmeier, on behalf of Chair Sinterklaas. We have received your transmission and wish to thank you for the three technologies that we received. We have interpreted all three to a working level of knowledge.

Sincerest thanks from the Naechtlich.

Sinterklaas turned to a voice that came from his far left. While the Naechtlich had access, obviously, to crystal clear audio systems, the Bridge's communication system purposefully added a very small level of distortion, making it easily distinguished from those who worked within it.

Executive Officer Hofmeister walked over to Sinterklaas, a small circle having attached itself to his glove. Without a word, he tapped the screen and the circle dissolved.

"Chair, we have arrived. Shall we dock?"

Sinterklaas considered the scene. The derelict vessel had been blown up to an immense size on the screen, with a number of details showing, generally, a large chunk of density that seemed to be a supply room. To the side, it was clear that another mothership - New Hope - had started the boarding process already.

"Yes. Comms, announce us to New Paradise."

[Engines -4 HP, Excelsior] [Military Detail -32 men, light casualties inflicted on enemy] [Shield Generator -5 HP, Destroyed]

Bridge
"Engines are being destroyed... we've lost shields." The Chief Systems Manager reported gravely.

Espenson looked at the outside cameras that still survived. The outnumbered troops were fighting a losing battle against superior foes. Already a third of their number had fallen. Crippled, with no where to run, and at least another 6 hours before the Ion Cannons were online, Excelsior was running out of options.

"Call another 100 crew members out of Cryo. F***, call them all out. If we're going to die they might as well know. Arm another two units and send them up on transport 2. Dispatch both transports to afterwards to intercept that torp if possible. Stagger them, we don't want the both transports getting lost if only one blocks the torp. God, if the only other option wasn't to wait until a black sphere devoured us, I would have never signed up for this."

Espenson looked briefly over at Commander Wade, who seemed to have abandoned his military bravado in the face of certain defeat and slumped down in his chair, looking glum.

Transport 1, Edge of Dust Cloud
"Kharbarinth, this is Sergeant Withers, Transport 1 of Excelsior. Requesting permission to dock in your Hangar."

Withers' relief had turned to slight anxiety. He was safe, he had done his mission, Kharbarinth was coming... but what of Excelsior? They were not safe... Withers might survive, but not them. No, they were doomed!

Hanger, the Naechtlich
The Unidentified Vessel

"Chair, this is Noncom Faeber. Assault 1 is ready to move. Salvage 1, Salvage 2, Salvage 3 are on standby."

Four teams of 25 each made a single crew. Each was armed, and they had a crew's worth of tools. Noncom Faeber was attached to Salvage 1, and would be commanding the crew. At the head of Assault 1 stood Noncom Jaeger, coordinating the crew's armed response, and in Salvage 2, his counterpart Noncom Hass would coordinate the crew's more substantial machinery and the salvage effort.

"EVA 1, this is Chair."

Sinterklaas looked over his screens, and the running updates from Communications. No response from New Paradise yet. The Excelsior was in trouble, but the Naechtlich had literally no way to help - they were too far to respond quickly, and their transport would get shot down. At any rate, they didn't have the arms to respond with anything more than a single crew while still retaining armaments for the scavenging.

"Move Order issued, good luck."

Sinterklaas leaned back. They had brought the Greenhouse online for the first time yesterday, and had managed to far exceed the capacity that had been expected, using their knowledge of botany and xenobiology. It had been a fantastic day - the excess was given to the crew to do as they wished.

Sinterklaas gestured in the air.

"Quartermaster, this is Chair. Release the rest of the Soma for use. Today, we get to work."

The Admiral had just read the message from the Excelsior. Then he read it again.
Code: Select all
RE: EMERGENCY
TO ALL FLEET SHIPS
EXCELSIOR IS UNDER ATTACK BY THREE ALIEN WARSHIPS, WHICH HAVE OPENED FIRE ON OUR SHIP. IF YOU CAN READ THIS, SEND BACKUP IMMEDIATELY.

-EXCELSIOR OUT

¨Launch the transports, we're going to get as many people out as we can.¨

¨Aye, Admiral, launching transports one and two.¨
The transport's crew were quickly briefed on the situation, as they waited in silence in the launch tube. Captain Vacik and Captain Reha's craft both carried minimal fuel, and were planning on refueling at the Excelsior and dropping the crew at the Forge, indefinetly or until the Excelsior was rescued. Whichever came first. The tubes lit up green and the electromagnetic rails threw Vacik and Reha's craft out of the Forge at high speed. Immediately, the Captains of the transports begin maneuvering towards the battle zone, engines at full.

¨Wake up some more of the crew, and get us building fighters and appropriate munitions for the scrappers.¨

¨Aye sir.¨

Dust Cloud, Far Reaches of the Shattered Planet Sector
Hour 4

The hangar bay opened again- and one of the transports exploded almost instantly. Flak fire pattered the other one, shards from the attack on the first, but it survived. Enemy anti-ship fire raked the Excelsior, but caused no damage due to being mere small arms shells; another hundred of the soldiers of the Kharbarinth joined the battle, just as the last stragglers of the first squad fell to the withering alien weaponsfire. The torpedo slammed into a Crew Quarters, the transport unable to intercept it with its low speed, wrecking the module in a fiery explosion nearly instantly. With the battle on the hull continuing though, a curious thing occurred- the main xenos vessel staggered as if punched in the gut, and a fireball could be seen spewing bits of hull and metal into the dusty atmosphere of the nebula. The alien vessels closed in with the stricken one, and their transports returned. The aliens fell back, fighting, into their evactuation ships, and fled. Behind them the explosives detonated, causing severe damage to the Enrichment plant, but then the aliens accelerated away deeper into the dust cloud, the damage vessel limping badly and seeming barely powered.

It seemed the men of the Excelsior had been victorious... somehow?

[Crew Quarters destroyed, -8 HP Enrichment Plant, -1 Transport (Destroyed along with 1 Crew and 1 Small Arms), total loss of one Crew in combat] [Combat Ended]

Forge of Petora Research Lab

The specks of black settled out of the atmosphere as the device continued to power up, before it flashed and they all fell to the ground. Upon examination, the lumps were about the size of a marble, purest of pure heavy elements. This would be a great boon, but it came at a cost- some of the researchers began coughing up blood, and it seemed chunks of the elements had also manifested within their bodies. Some of them could not be saved, the chunks of usable metal having severely damage vital internal organs or caused hemoraging in the brain. But when melted down, the chunks could be mixed with lower grade metals to be very useful.

"Recall the transports Ensign, the Excelsior is going to make it." the Admiral said with a grin.
"Aye, sir. Sending the message." The ensign tapped away at some buttons on his console, and a few moments later, the transports acknowledgement returned.

At that moment in time though, Chief Novotná was not having a good day. She and her team had been up for 37 hours straight, figuring out the device. They turned it on, and marble sized-chunks of pure heavy elements manifested in the sealed lab. Unfortunately, they manifest not just in open air, but in scientists as well. Dr. Machová had a ball manifest in her, and was now coughing up blood, and likely had severe internal damage. Novotná knew the odds. Machová likely wasn't going to make it.
