Not to mention we only ever see a select few of the mods. The rest are obviously part of a secret, hidden organization behind the scenes of the Elite Mod class pulling all the strings. Clearly, NS has also been overrun by the Illuminati.

Most of those moderators/admins aren't active.

I see Violet and Ballotonia on occasionally, Frisbeeteria, Sedge, Crazy Girl, Dread Lady Nathicana, Farnhamia, Mallorea and Riva, Mousebumples, Nervun, The Blaatschapen, The Archregimancy and Tsaraine on but I rarely see the others and at most I'll see two on at any one time.

That's less than half the 27 even allowing for some margin of error.

I will accept Bears Armed specification there. He's right, it's not the same thing but we also do not have access to the specific numbers.

I may have laughed at New Babylonia's post too much. XD

Congrats mall and mouse! Do you fancy some fresh celebratory fish and cheese to see you in?

I was a mod of another (small) site once (and an admin of a hosted forum) for a while, but they were nothing compared to the scale of NS!

This is simply not true.

What you see are the mods who are active in the forums. I can vouch for the fact that several other mods and admins do extraordinary amounts of work behind the scenes processing getting help requests in the game side mod centre.

On the other hand, I hardly ever touch the getting help requests unless they deal with NS Sports; in fact, I'm likely one of the least active game mods when it comes to processing game side tasks, and likely do much less work than several of those game-side centred mods.

You think I do more because you see more of me in the forums; but I can assure you that forum activity is no foolproof guide to the amount of work that mods actually do for NationStates.

That is a very fair point. I know that Frisbee spends a lot of time on those requests... I know by the tone of response I get XD.

That said I'm sure there are a couple of mods/admins that should be 'retired' by now but again I can't be entirely sure and I can only give anecdotal evidence from my own perspective.

Are you saying that Frisbeeteria has a negative tone?

Everyone has their own style of writing and communicating, Frisbeeteria is simply easier to spot. Abrupt, shortened with a sense of finality. I like dealing with people who are straightforward like that.

That used to be a consideration, but it's not so much one anymore. Granting GM powers isn't a matter of assigning mods to the back room to handle GHRs - it's just giving them a bigger and more effective toolbox. It's a promotion based on our trust in their ability and reliability rather than a specific game need.

All GMs are also FMs. Being promoted doesn't mean you stop monitoring the forums. I work both sides of the game about equally, as do most of the GMs.

My point though Fris, is that what's the use in having a "bigger and more effective toolbox" if the mod isn't around to use it? Again, people who have the bigger toolbox and fall inactive are different to people who are inactive and then get the bigger toolbox.

I'm not sure what your last line is referring too. Of course GMs moderate the forums. But FMs can't moderate gameside. So an examination of forumside activity provides a more accurate picture of overall FM activity, than overall GM activity (which could only increase!). That doesn't serve to rebuke my claim of inactivity posted earlier.

In total we have 27 Mods (and one techie)

At the last count we have 140,313 nations

That's 1 mod for every 5196 players (assuming all of them are active all of the time). This site is far from over moderated.

To put that in perspective in 2008 Phpbb had 1 mod for every 2500 users https://blog.phpbb.com/2008/08/12/how-m ... ally-need/
Others believe that a higher ratio is required http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum/ge ... moderators

The general consensus appears roughly at 1 mod for every 3000 users. Given that there are 200 users on right now (and apparently no mods) I'd say there might be a problem with understaffing.

NS isn't just a forum, though. A minority of players go on the forum, and gameside (one would presume) isn't as infracturous as forumside.
