The Reçuecian National Team is a relative unknown, but if it's known for anything, it would be for its defensive style. This is partly due to the large influence of Reçueçn FC on the team--the most popular domestic club in Reçueçn plays about as defensive a game as you can imagine. This is balanced out to some extent by the players from other teams with more attacking philosophies, but the league as a whole tends towards defense, and it shows in the national team. Furthermore, Gerauld Firaut, the team's #1 goalie, is the best player on the team by a solid margin--likely the only truly world class player. He and his defense form the foundation for the whole team. The team plays in a 4-3-3 formation, but sometimes the wings drop back, almost making it a 4-5-1. In general, the team's strategy and tactics are solid--Jacques Tremblay, the coach, knows his stuff despite his age. The weakness would be the quality of the talent on the team--Reçueçn has not yet had the opportunity to develop or train true world class talent.

The Reçueçian National Team's mascot is the Unicorn; thus another name for the team is "The Unicorns". The fantastical creature has been a symbol of Reçueçn for almost two millennia and is also the national animal, appearing as the supporters in the national coat of arms.

The team's kit represents the colors of the flag in a quite literal fashion. This kit was first one the Unicorns ever wore, dating back to the 59th Baptism of Fire. Today it is unpopular with fans, who think it is old-fashioned, badly designed, and ugly. Although the RNFA secretly admits that the fans are right and aims to replace the kit soon, they tout it as 'traditional' and promote its value as a connection to the team's past.

Reçueçn has only one stadium in which its national team plays, located in the capital city (also named Reçueçn). Never having been given an official title, the national stadium is usually simply referred to just that: The National Stadium. Capacity: 30,000.

Roster

Jacques Tremblay
Manager, 70 years old.
Old and wise, and known for his eternal ability to surprise and innovate, Jacques Tremblay is often seen as the father of modern Reçuecian football. He was once the coach of Associated Savoie, and during that period they performed much better than they had before or than they have since. His new method brought great players to the team, and when he retired, it hurt the team greatly. Despite his retirement, when asked to coach the national team for the Baptism of fire, did not refuse. He and Gerauld Firaut hold together the national team, oft riven with tension. Really, Tremblay is too old to still be coaching a soccer team, especially at the international level. Yet his players still hold a lot of respect for him, both as the Reçuecian footballing legend that he is, but also now as a coach and mentor--even if sometimes they wish he'd let them unwind a little more.

Bonheur Relié
Assistant Manager, 44 years old.
The only new face on this roster, this cycle marks the first time the RNFT has published the name of any of its assistant coaches with its roster. Relié is fierce and passionate, and acts as a bit of a foil to the older, more reserved Tremblay.

Starters

Gerauld Firaut
Goalkeeper, 24 years old. Team captain. Jersey #1. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
Responsible and mature for his age, Firaut is widely considered the best player in Reçeuçn. His star status does not extend outside the country as of yet, however. Of course, as a goalie, it may be hard to compete with the international fame that strikers often achieve. His goal-tending skill, however, is unparalleled. When he's not putting up a wall in the net, Firaut acts as his team's moral compass off the pitch. Level-headed and perceptive, Firaut is a wonderful leader for the team, both in and outside the game. His tactical instincts are not bad, and it's not uncommon to hear him yelling instructions to his defense. Firaut is happily married and has a two-year-old daughter.

Leo Beck
Sweeper, 28 years old. Jersey #2. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
During the regular season, Beck plays on the same team as his goalkeeper, Gerauld Firaut. Thus on the national team as well, they work well together. Although older than Firaut, he looks up to him as a leader, and is very protective of him, as well as Reçueçn FC's reputation. Beck is a stellar player and helps fill out his team's defensive capabilities.

Ägidius Heissler
Left back, 34 years old. Jersey #3. Plays for Itrino.
Heissler is getting a bit older, but he can always find a way to trap an attack in the corner, and then win the goal kick. A very tall man, he's come in useful for the Unicorns in many a set piece where he's headed away a dangerous corner kick or free kick. His phlegmatic personality is an asset to a team largely full of high-strung starlets fighting for attention.

Norman Bright
Center back, 32 years old. Jersey #4. Plays for Renwyll.
Bright was widely credited for Renwyll's high performance in the Globe Cup 56. He has good spacial awareness and an ability to control the center of the box without letting his mark slip. When paired with a strong goalie, Bright really shines, and has the potential to turn that pair into a duo to be reckoned with.

Oliver Spencer
Right back, 23 years old. Jersey #5. Plays for Brinemouth [NPH].
Another one of Reçueçn FC's star defenders, Spencer is often outshone by Firaut, and can never decide whether the rivalry he thinks they have is more important than team spirit or not. Now that he's just been signed by a side in the Nephara Premiership that's likely to do well, he's happy to quietly show off back in Reçueçn.

Luc Pélissier
Left midfielder, 30 years old. Jersey #6. Plays for Heldingen.
With Clint Soto's retirement before IAC 7, Pélissier was promoted to a starting position for the team. Although his spot as a national team starter isn't undeserved, he doesn't have quite the same level of talent as some of the other stars.

Grégoire Leclair
Defensive midfielder, 28 years old. Jersey #18. Plays for Association Genève.
A while back Leclair began seeing more playing time as Tremblay switched him onto the starting list for Saunders. This was seen as a shift towards defense, as Saunders plays in more of an attacking role than Leclair does. But in training leading up to qualifiers, it seems that Tremblay is doubling down on this strategy and leaning on Leclair in particular.

Maynard Hebron
Right midfielder, 25 years old. Jersey #8. Plays for the Alpine Armageddon.
The unsung hero of the Alpine Armageddon (one of the lowest ranked teams in domestic competition in Reçueçn), Hebron is a great proponent of football development across the nation, especially on behalf of smaller amateur teams who want to join the RNFL. This has lead in the past to a resentful attitude on his part towards some of the larger clubs--clubs who provide most of the players on the national team. Hebron's sports activism, however, is smiled upon by most people in Reçueçn, and with the advent of the new Ministry of Sport, he hopes for more opportunities for him to promote soccer throughout the country. World cup qualifications are a wonderful stage on which he can gain visibility.

Hippolyte Lavigne
Left wing, 31 years old. Jersey #9. Plays for Hawthorne Kickers [XAN].
Lavigne can make great crosses, but can tense up under pressure if he has to score himself. His best skill is his ability to take the ball from the midfielders, get deep into attacking territory, and feed it to a striker. Lavigne is very tall, which is probably what is responsible for his position as a leading figure on and off the field.

Frank "Franky" Adams
Center forward, 19 years old. Jersey #10. Plays for Association Genève.
Young, extremely talented, and rather cocky, Franky, who plays for Association Genève in the RNFL, really makes their team. When he has a bad shooting streak, his team has a losing streak, and vice versa. Franky knows this. At Association Genève, the team and the fans love him. At the national team, they tolerate him--his rivalries with Reçueçn FC's players have caused tension in the past, putting more responsibility on Tremblay to defuse the situation. Tremblay, incidentally, thinks Franky is a bit conceited, but is also keenly aware of his talent. Franky is the national team's all-time leading scorer (33 goals in 67 games). Still a teenager, it looks like he will be one of the faces of Reçuecian football for a while, and he's couldn't be more thrilled about it--if anything's bigger than his talent, it's his personality. Besides Firaut, he is probably the most well-known player on the team. The recent run of relative success the unicorns have had allowed him to overcome some of his rivalries with his teammates, but it doesn't look like he'll ever settle down to become the sort of spiritual leader a player like Firaut is. He will probably continue to clown around for years.

Freeman Lebo
Right wing, 26 years old. Jersey #11. Plays for Pelethas United [COS].
Lebo can score goals, is highly motivated, and persevering. Like some others, however, he is a bit high-strung. He was happy to go his own way and become one of the first Reçuecian players who played abroad. Lebo found a spot playing for Cosumar's Klyde FC for a few seasons, making a few decent globe cup runs along the way. He's now very happy to have found another Cosumarite club in Pelethas United. He hasn't been home for Christmas in a few years.

Reserves

Jannick Bechtholdt
Goalkeeper, 31 years old. Jersey #12. Plays for Association Genève.
Association Genève's starting keeper has to alternately put up with being a goalie on a team where it's all about the attack, and being goalie on the national team where he is constantly outclassed by Gerald Firaut. Often ignored, he is still a great player.

Emanuele Cutrona
Sweeper, 20 years old. Jersey # 13. Plays for Harrim FC.
Cutrona is one of the two latest callups for the national team, first playing during IAC 7. He is the only Italian-speaking player on the team (although others are from Italian-speaking clubs). He is the second youngest player on the squad, besides the precocious Franky. He and Franky, of course, get along pretty well, constantly joking around and pulling pranks. Sometimes next to Franky, even Cutrona seems older and more mature. But Franky has also been on the team for years, so sometimes it's obvious that he's the one who knows the ropes--even if he doesn't always respect the rules.

Paulin Bourguignon
Left back, 21 years old. Jersey #14. Plays for Stomford.
Bourguignon is the kind of defensive player who is always trying to clear the ball by booting it up the field as hard as he can. That is, at least, when he's not in the opponents' box on a corner kick trying to score. Big on counter-attacks, he sometimes outpaces the mid-fielders, usually to his coach's dismay.

Lukas Kayserling
Center back, 20 years old. Jersey #15. Plays for Herzegovina City FC [BNJ].
Kayserling sometimes has difficulty communicating as he doesn't speak English or French as well as most of the other team members, and most of them don't speak German. However, at press conferences, he's great at sitting there and looking somber. A tall, intimidating figure, he takes his job very seriously; he takes everything seriously.

Klaus Klemm
Right back, 28 years old. Jersey #16. Plays for Chapel-Field House.
Plays defense, but as if he were a mid-fielder. He plays for Chapel-Field House, a team from the same city as Reçueçn FC, but with a much smaller fan-base. This bothers Klemm. Since the national team games are played in the capital too, he's always insisting that it's his turf and that he won't be made a second-class citizen. Nobody else thinks he is; he's a solid player.

Raoul Lavigne
Left midfielder, 21 years old. Jersey #17. Plays for Monmouth Park [CBP].
No relation of the slightly more well-known Hippolyte Lavigne who starts for the team, Raoul is the other of the Unicorns' two latest callups besides Emanuele Cutrona. He caught the NT's scouts' eyes after helping Bonneville Sporting to a couple good seasons. Still a newcomer on the team, he hasn't perhaps 'clicked' yet, but given the chance to play, should be able to distinguish himself.

Harold Saunders
Attacking midfielder, 27 years old. Jersey #7. Plays for Association Genève.
Saunders is synonymous with an aggressive style of play, especially in the midfield. He seems to always be able to find a way to give the ball to Franky. One of the leaders of the team, he is emotionally well-balanced on and off the field. He plays less often now that the team is shifting even further towards defense.

Thomas Büchel
Right midfielder, 30 years old. Jersey #19. Plays for Reçueçn FC.
Büchel is a very fluid player, who doesn't let himself get locked into the same rut. His best trait is his situational ability, which, when coupled with his dribbling and passing skills, makes him a formidable force when trying to maintain possession or get the ball forward.

Per Tegeler
Left wing, 23 years old. Jersey #20. Plays for Marketville [EUR].
Good at receiving the ball from the defense or mid-field, trapping it in general, and taking it into the 18-yard box and shooting. A possible weakness of Tegeler's is passing: either he doesn't, or it's long air balls.

Ly Nasser
Center forward, 22 years old. Jersey #21. Plays for Zimmerich FC.
Nasser loves to shoot from far out, and often shoots high. Despite this, he makes up for it with his sheer number of shots. Incredibly aggressive, and loved by Zimmerich fans. Personally, he is of the opinion that he is one of the best strikers in the world. He is certainly an asset to the team, although his attacking style doesn't always mesh well with their more defensive method of play.

Jean-Baptiste Brochard
Right wing, 26 years old. Jersey #22. Plays for Lampadaires Associated.
Brochard is incredibly fast, and having the ball doesn't slow him down hardly at all. Although Brochard is weaker in set pieces and organized attacks, he is strong on the counterattack and the breakaway, where he can outpace the opposing team's defenders.

Helies de Malhortye
Goalkeeper, 34 years old. Jersey #23. Plays for Zimmerich FC.
De Malhortye has noble blood and is rather high-strung--but then, what football player isn't? A lot of other goalies, I guess. De Malhortye is still a solid choice for a back-up goalie, but on a team with Firaut, there's little call for him. His one particular strength is blocking penalties.

During the off-season, seven of the most prominent football teams in Reçueçn organized themselves into the Recuecian National Football Association, or RNFA, inviting other pro and amateur teams to join from across the nation. It had been thought that some other teams might take issue with the association giving itself the title of “National,” but every major team, among many lesser-known ones, joined, with others considering joining next year. Many of the amateur teams managed the transition to monetizing player contracts, television rights, etc., very seamlessly, as they found joining the RNFA put them in great demand, attracting large crowds to their stadiums and bringing in lucrative TV deals.

The RNFA as the governing body of Reçuecian football consists of a representative of each team in the association, with the original seven teams being given slightly greater powers, such as the ability to veto propositions they do not approve of. The RNFA also has a president and a board of secretaries, liaison and finance officers, none of whom are associated with any one team. Although the RNFA meets occasionally during the season, they are most active, especially the “governing board,” as it is referred to, during the off-season, setting up logistics, financing and sponsoring, and other league details.

The RNFA plans to, in the future, start a national football team to compete in friendlies and the world cup, and also send teams to UICA competitions such as the Champions’ Cup. Other possibilities include expanding the league system by admitting new teams to form new tiers, but before that can be done, the teams that have already joined the RNFA must be split into tiers somehow.

A round robin was the method the RNFA chose to rank the various teams so that next season they could be split into separate tiers, as in other countries. Some analysts predict smaller attendances for teams that have wound up in the bottom half and will be playing in the second tier next year, but others point out that the crowds will still probably be at least as big as they were before the teams joined the RNFA.

A slightly controversial decision was made to hold all of the games on neutral ground, due to the fact that because any given pair of teams only played each other once, the home team would have an advantage. Opponents of the neutral ground theory claimed that it lowered attendance and interest in the games. Next season, both leagues will use a home and away schedule. The teams that finished in the top sixteen will be admitted into the First League, with the next twenty in the Second League.

Team Spotlights:

Reçueçn FC, one of the seven teams that founded the RNFA, hailing from the capital city and claiming the largest fan-base, took the top spot, as most expected it to. Its keeper, Gerald Firaut, was hailed for his record number of saves, and let in only 16 goals over the course of the 33 games in which he played.

Associated Savoie, a professional team and another of the original seven, was very disappointed with their results, barely missing the cutoff for the First League. With a goal differential of only four points over the season of 35 games, they scored an extremely high number of goals, having some of the best offense players in the league, but suffered from a defense described by the press as “inept.” They look forward to being the top of the Second League next year and earning the first promotion to the First League in what is to be its hopefully long history.

The Alpine Armageddon, coming in almost last, was surprisingly up-beat about their performance. “As an amateur team that has had some difficulty in the past against some of the other small fry in the country,” said their coach, Bill Runkins, “we were very happy with our performance against the big fish, even some of the professional teams. My one regret is the 4-0 whopping we took against our arch-rivals, Puits Tunnellers. But we got revenge on them, ‘cause they came in last. We played good games, we didn’t get discouraged, and next year we’ll try again, and do better.”

This year was looked on almost as a practice season by many of the fans, and no other international sports networks took much interest. But everything went very smoothly, and next year, with the formation of the First and Second Leagues, it is hoped that the fun will really get started.

RNFA Season 1

Matchdays 1-10

What was actually the second season under the Recuecian National Football Association (RNFA) was referred to as “Season 1” of the Recuecian National Football League (RNFL) on television and across the sporting world. This was because the last season, which did not involve multiple tiers, was officially titled the “Recuecian National Qualification League,” being used to seed the teams for the next years competition. As the first season under the new format, season one was to some extent experimental, but returned great results—attendance was good, as was TV viewership.

The first obvious change since the last season is that instead of a single game on neutral ground between each pair of teams, a two-legged home-and-away system was utilized. This was possible because of the much smaller number of teams in each league. Naturally, this arrangement was immensely more pleasing to the home fans, as they could go to bi-weekly soccer games and root for their own team each time, instead of a visiting team in which they had no interest.

The main concern of the organizers was that the teams which last year had all competed together were now split up, and the those teams placed in the Second League would not attract many viewers. However, being in the RNFA at all turned out to be an improvement on the situation before, even if some teams didn’t draw quite as much attendance as during the qualification season.

After the first third of the season, Renwyll is leading the league, to the delight of its fans, and has been for the last three weeks. However, they can’t seem to get more than a one game lead on any of the teams behind them. Reçueçn FC and Association Genève, the two favorites, are having wildly different results—Reçueçn FC is doing fine in third, but Association Genève is way down at 12th. Incidentally, Association Genève lost a very close “Le Classique” away to Reçueçn FC, 3-2. After that, their season went downhill. They won a few games, but not enough to keep them near the top half of the standings. Association Genève also sits just atop a huge gap in points—Arly, Bayern Heidelberg and Col-de-Môse seem to have no hope of catching the rest of the pack if they continue to play as they have so far, and Chapel-Field House splits the difference between them and everyone else. Col-de-Môse, in fact, has scored only a single goal so far this season, in a stunning months-long break-down of their offensive play. The biggest blow-outs so far has been Arly’s shocking 6-0 defeat at the hands of Annedine Sporting during the fifth match-day, and Écho SC and Bayern Heidelberg’s similar losses to Tyvania and Ville-Sur-Rivière, respectively, one week later.

After the first twelve match-days in the second league, Associated Savoie appears to be set to regain its place among the other teams which founded the RNFA, but Stomford is just barely in the second half of the table. The table is grouped pretty closely in the middle, with nine of the teams condensed into only a four point range. Below them is another bunch of teams, but neither Puits Tunnellers and Lampadaires Associated have won a game yet, with the Tunnellers only managing to tie one. Meanwhile, at the top of the field, Itrino, Boruncia, and Sporting Saint-Carl are all greedily eyeing the top spot, and are all within a mere 3 points of it. All of them have also held the spot or been in a tie for it two or fewer match-days ago.

It looks like this exciting season of football is set to continue with even more drama.

Renwyll lost the top spot in the league on the twelfth match-day to Annedine Sporting, who still has the position, although Reçueçn FC, Heldingen, and Association Genève are hot on their heels—none of them more than three points behind. Renwyll is not lagging by much either, nor is Bonneville sporting. The race for the championship looks to be tight all the way to the end. At the other end of the standings, however, Bayern Heidelberg and Col-De-Môse seem to have no hope of ever catching up to their competitors, with Arly only slightly better off. Tyvania and Chapel-Field House have also fallen to the rear. The remaining six teams are in close competition in the middle of the table, but this mostly affect the in-league rivalries and the fans’ pride—not international news or competitions. In other Rivalry news, Association Genève got their revenge for their defeat in Le Classique, defeating Reçueçn FC 3-0 at home.

Two thirds of the way into the season, Associated Savoie has widened its lead. Stomford, whose performance had been disappointing earlier, has been working their way slowly up the table, winning many games by only one goal and drawing a bunch more, but only losing one game in their last seventeen game-days. (Although back in the first 8 weeks, they lost every other match.) The table is still very close except for a couple teams at the bottom, and, as before mentioned, Savoie’s lead at the top. However, the other two promotion spots, especially the third, will be causing much competition.

RNFA Season 1

Matchdays 21-30

The biggest news for Reçueçian football came during the international break for the World Cup after the 20th matchday in the first league. Although Reçueçn was not represented at the World Cup, the RNFA announced that Reçueçn as a country would begin to participate in international tournaments, starting with the Champion’s Cup and other UICA events. The RNFA also announced the planned creation of a national football team for Reçueçn. The RNFA said that while it had planned to join UICA after another year’s competition, the way the UICA cycles were laid out, they decided it would work out best to simply dive in, even in the first season. For the national team, the RNFA said that the length of the World Cup cycles gives them plenty of time to prepare, so although the announcement of the planned creation of a national team is happening now, the actual formation of the team may be delayed by at least a year, or even more.

Reçueçn FC clinched the championship on the twenty-ninth match-day with their 1-0 home win over Tyvania. Adding the RNFA’s announcement over the international break, the fans went wild and stormed the pitch, celebrating the nation’s most popular team’s advancement to the first large international competition in the history of the RNFL. Bill LaVoyard, who represents Reçueçn FC in the RNFA, was the person who pushed the most for the RNFL’s participation in UICA, as he predicted his team would do well enough at least to get into the Globe Cup. As it turned out, he got his team a spot in the Champion’s cup. Although some did accuse him of working only for the good of his own team, the nation as a whole seems to agree that international competition will be good for every team. Reçueçn FC, after all, is not the only team to join UICA competition from the first league, as Annedine Sporting, Heldingen and Renwyll have also clinched spots in the Globe Cup. Association Genève is the biggest team that did not make the international cut-off, and their fanbase, the second largest in the contest, is hugely disappointed.

Other disappointed teams include Arly, Bayern Heidelber, and Col-De-Môse, who have all been relegated.

It was no surprise to anyone that Associated Savoie took the top spot. As one of the founding teams of the RNFA, Associated Savoie also pushed for joining UICA competition. As it turned out, the competition for the UICA spots was the only thing that gave the league excitement, as huge gaps developed in the table at the very front, in the back, and in the middle in a couple places. The race for the last spot was only decided after the last game was played, and came down to a difference of a single point. Actwell, who missed it, still managed to finish eleven points above the next team, however. In order to balance the table more, the RNFA is considering measures such as salary caps for the next season. In the meantime, Itrino, Stomford, and Sporting Saint-Carl have all qualified for the Series B Champions’ Cup, with Itrino and Stomford also getting their promotion to the First League, alongside Associated Savoie.

Ruh Swess In! Ruh Swess In! Ruh Swess In! Ruh Swess In! As the sound of the chanting in the street below grew louder, Gerald Firaut started in his sleep, rolled over, and woke. Pulling off his pajamas he put on his kit to please the crowd. He sighed. Before he was awarded MVP he had been able to eat his breakfast before doing PR, and in peace. He walked over to his balcony, drew the blinds and stepped out. The fans roared.

"You show them, Gerald!"

"UICA's never gonna know what hit them!"

"Reçueçn are better than them all!"

Gerald smiled and waved, then went back inside and down-stairs, rubbing his eyes, to pour himself some cereal. Bill LaVoyard was already at the breakfast table, dressed in a suit, finished his meal, and reading the newspaper.

"Why are they so excited? We're only submitting our qualifiers?" asked Gerald. The chanting had started again.

"It's the first time in our nations history we've ever participated in UICA competition. You know this," said Mr. Lavoyard.

"I suppose it was a rhetorical question. But honestly. I don't understand how our fans can be so excited--as you said, we've never done this before, and we'll probably get our defeat handed to us on a silver platter."

"If Robby was here, he'd know the right thing to say to inspire you, just like they are," said Mr. LaVoyard. "But you need feed off your fans' confidence, or you'll never play your best. You're one of the few on your team who has actually played internationally before. Of all people, you should be confident."

Gerald ate his cereal.

As Gerald had said, the actual presentation of the qualifiers was not very exciting, other than the fans screaming outside. (They were not allowed inside the UICA headquarters.) After returning to their guest-house, Gerald, Mr. LaVoyard, and the other players and team reps who had been chosen to present the Reçueçn qualifiers tried to relax. A few flopped on the couch and turned on the TV.

"The nation of Reçueçn has for the first time in its history, decided to participate in UICA competition and announced its qualifiers today at UICA headquarters," droned the sports announcer.

The camera showed Gerald as he had read the team names out of the envelope. "Champions cup: Reçueçn FC." The camera cut to the fans in the street. One was being interviewed. "I just love Reçueçn FC: it's the best team in the history of Reçuecian football, and it's our first time, I know, but I'm sure we can go far." As the camera pulled away, the man yelled, "Shut 'em out, Gerald!" A young girl behind him waved a sign. "MARRY ME GERALD."

Gerald snapped. He grabbed the remote and turned off the TV. "Why is it always about us?" he yelled. "Why is it always about me? Does no one care that Association Genève failed to qualify? That Annedine, Heldingen, and Renwyll did? Why don't they show that? Does nobody even watch the Series B championship?"

"Relax, man," said an 18 year-old striker from Associated Savoie, putting his hand on Gerald's, since he couldn't reach his shoulder without getting off the couch. "Your fans are huge. Enjoy it. You're famous. MVP. Playing in the Champions Cup. How can you not be loving every minute of your life? Chicks are crawling all over you," he added, trying to make it look like an after-thought.

"I don't have a life," said Gerald. "I want a life--I want to go home to my wife, Samantha, who I'm trying to build a family with. I want to play football because I love it--not because every fan in the nation yells my name."

RNFL Season 2

Match-Days 1-10

The season started with Zimmerich FC taking the lead by the second match-day, and managing to hold it over Recuecn FC until the fourth, clinging on by goal differential. Recuecn FC took the lead the fifth week, only to lose it after their next game, first to Bonneville Sporting, and then Heldingen for a couple match-days. However, in the 9th week, Recuecn FC tied 3-3 with Zimmermich FC to go ahead on goal differential. Meanwhile, this tie was one of only two Zimmermich FC would manage to pull off after losing the lead, in a so far winless six-game streak. This streak has dropped them to 11th. Despite this, they have not taken their eyes off the championship, being only three games back. This might be due to the inherent openness and possibility of the season with two thirds left to play, but a look at the table shows how clustered it is at the top, with the median number of points being only 7 out from first place. Annedine Sporting and Renwyll, the other two teams who did well enough in the First League last year to make it to international competition, are not quite as hot this season, with Annedine near the middle of the standings and Renwyll near the bottom. The teams which were promoted last season, Itrino, Stomford, and Associated Savoie, appear to be doing fairly well in the First League, with the exception of Stomford, who is in last place with a single win and two draws.

First place in the Second league bounced around somewhat towards the beginning of the season, as is natural, but then found a pattern flip-flopping between Actwell and Bayern Heidelberg. The two team have stayed neck and neck, and Actwell has only managed to extend their lead to two points. Heidelberg was one of the teams demoted from the First League last season. Another, Col-de-Mose, is not far behind either, in third place. Arly, the third demotee, is in sixth place, but back 9 points; the Second League standings are much more spread out than those of the First League. That is, at least at the top of the table. In the middle, 9 teams are separated only by 4 points, with multiple ties broken only by goal difference, and even two teams (Sporting Saint-Carl and the West Canton Eagles) in a dead heat. As in the First League, the Second League has seen multiple upsets and unexpected advances and setbacks, and the rest of the season promises to be interesting.

During this first third of the season, several Recuecian teams participated in qualifying events for UICA championships. The first international games for any RNFL members were Sporting Saint-Carl's match against the Yeaddin Owls, a team from Vilita, which they tied 1-1, and Stomfords' against Deportivo Proctor City, a Zenician team, which they drew 2-2. Renwyll, in the first qualifying round for the Globe Cup, won its first international game (away) 2-0, and Recuecn FC, the nations Champions' Cup representative, brought joy to its home crowd with a smashing 4-2 defeat of its opponents (the Willox Street Pirates). In the second leg of the first qualifying rounds, Stomford and Sporting Saint-Carl were unfortunately eliminated, but Renwyll took home another victory from Olympia FC's stadium in Eastfield Lodge and Recuecn FC advanced despite losing away. During the second set of qualifying rounds, Itrino started off by losing 3-1 to FC Sillimus from Valladares and never recovered, while Recuecn FC had an identical scoreline during its first game and wound up falling to the hands of CF Aeropag, from the Association Francophone. The nation of Recuecn looks forward to its competitors who remain to play in later Globe Cup and Series B Champions' Cup qualifying rounds in the next part of the season.

RNFL Season 2

Match-Days 11-20

The standings of the first league, which had been rather close towards the beginning of the season, got mixed up a bit towards the middle of the football year. The bottom of the table became an even tighter competition than it was before, with Stomford, who had been doing rather poorly, climbing several places, while on the other hand, the top of the table spread out slightly. Recuecn FC lost their position as leader to Ville-Sur-Rivière. Ville-Sur-Rivière held the spot for six or seven match-days before in turn being passed by Heldingen. Heldingen has managed to build a four point lead over Ville-Sur-Rivière and a five point lead over Recuecn FC, but it remains a close race and the fans will be paying attention to the end.
In other news in the First League, the RNFL's first imported foreign player got his first start in this part of the season (although RNFL teams had had foreign players before the RNFL was officially formed). Reçueçn FC was the team which bought Rodge Holmes, a brand new player from the Northern Sunrise Islands.

The second third of the season didn't see any dramatic changes in the rankings of the second league, except perhaps for Boruncia who dropped 7 places. Col-De-Môse managed to take the lead from actwell, but most of the action happened on the field, not on the league tables. Hanting and Slynwell, notably, managed to score serious goals in several games, each managing to bring in five goals in a game at least twice, due to their offensive style of play. All in all, the leaders and the losers, Col-De-Môse and the Recuecn Raptors, respectively, have built up 7 and 6 point leads and deficits, but for the most part, it is still a close season.

During this part of the season, there were still five Recuecian teams competing in UICA tournaments. Associated Savoie, in the third preliminary round for the Series B Champions' Cup, smashed their opposition, Herogeos SC from Mangolana, with an aggregate score of 4-1. Unfortunately, other Recuecian teams didn't do as well. Annedine sporting, despite beating Lobyuseistvooshu 1-0 at home, had lost to them 4-1 away, and was eliminated in the third playoff round for the Globe Cup. In the same competition, Heldingen failed to score a single goal against Atlético Nacional from San Guayabal. Finally, the advancement hopes of Recuecn FC (and most of the nation, now rooting for them) were painfully played with before being dashed by an overtime goal from Sleepy Hollow.
Two teams were left however: Associated Savoie, and Renwyll, which had come all the way through three preliminary rounds, doing better even than teams which had had better starting ranks, and better than teams that were beating it in domestic competition. These two teams were now only two games away from making it into the group stages of their respective competitions, and bringing home decent international recognition. Associated Savoie lost their first game by a single point, and were sure they could win the home game by enough to advance. And at half-time in the second match, they were indeed leading 2-0. But as the second half began, Inland Peaks scored, ensuring at least a chance at overtime. And then, in the last minute, they scored again, ending Associated Savoie's tension with sadness. Now Renwyll was Recuecn's last contestant. They had won their first game 3-1, so they were practically sure to advance. But as thousands around Recuecn watched the game being broadcast from Valladeres, the Fontvielle Impact smashed Renwyll 4-1, sending their players home to hope for better luck in the last part of their domestic season in order to try again next year.

RNFL Season 2

Match-Days 21-30

The race for the championship in the first league was incredibly close. With only two match-days left, Recuecn FC managed to take first place from Heldingen, made even sweeter by the fact that their victory was 2-0 at home in "Le Classique" against Association Genève. Unfortunately, despite managing not to lose either of their last two games, in the twenty-ninth match-day they tied Tyvania and were passed again by Heldingen, and also Ville-Sur-Rivière, both of who won their respective games. Finally, all three of the teams won again the final week, so that Ville-Sur-Rivière won by a single point, with Heldingen beating out Recuecn FC on goal differential. These three teams, however, did have a sizable lead on the rest of the field. Meanwhile, Écho SC, Chapel-Field House, and Tyvania (the last team in the rankings but the same team that tied Recuecn FC, smashing their hopes of a repeat championship) were all relegated. Itrino, Stomford, and Associated Savoie, which had been promoted last year, all managed to stay up.

Col-De-Môse and Bayern Heidelberg, two of the teams which had been demoted last year, managed to gain the top spots and secure their re-promotion. Again, not much changed in the standings in this part of the season as they and Actwell, who had already been in the top three, contented themselves with swapping a single spot. Arly, the third team that had been demoted, came in fifth, not even making it to the UICA Series B championship. In fact, due to changes in the UICA format, Hamwich FC, the team which came in fourth, did not get a spot this year.

If you accept this call-up, please let me know as soon as is convenient for you. If you accept, your kit will be shipped to you. I would like to ask you to refrain from making this call-up public, as there will be a formal ceremony where the national team will be unveiled.
This is also your formal invitation to the aforementioned ceremony. It will take place at the RNFA headquarters in Reçueçn. Please wear your kit to the ceremony.

Gerald smiled as he put down the letter: mostly at Tremblay's writing style, but also at the thought of training under him. Gerald had made Tremblay's acquaintance before, and was aware he had been chosen as the manager for the national team, and hadn't really doubted that he himself would be called up to play for the nation. But he had never really added all the facts together, and it had never felt so real. He grabbed his laptop to send back a quick "yes".

National Team Kits

The ceremony to unveil the members of the national team did not go quite as smoothly as had been planned. A crowd formed, everyone showed up, and the event itself went off smoothly, but the team kits (extremely colorful and flashy, and somehow reminiscent of a third-world country) had not been ready in time to be shipped to the players, and there was a tense atmosphere among the members of rival teams. Furthermore, the planners of the event somehow forgot to plan for it to take place in a room large enough for the press and members of the public to participate. In the end the "unveiling" happened in the lobby of the RFNA building, rather spontaneously. Jacques Tremblay read out the names of the players he had chosen, first the reserves and then the starting XI, and the players walked out one by one into the lobby, where a dozen or so privileged journalists snapped a couple photos.
The real tension, however, was among the players in the back waiting to be called forwards. The names of their teammates-to-be had not been on their call-up letters, and although there were no big surprises, none of the players had thought that they would be playing alongside their worst rivals from across the state. About half of the total squad was made up of players from Reçueçn FC and Association Genève, the two biggest teams in Reçueçn, and the teams with the biggest rivalry. Then there were players from some other big teams, who felt under-represented, and a few star players from some rather more minnow-like teams, who perceived the others as lording it over them. In about two minutes the players had grouped themselves by team, and would not talk with other members. Gerald tried to walk over to the Association Genève players and say something about how it was "an honor to play for our country with you," but none of them bothered to look at him.
A couple minutes later, however, the entire squad were shoulder to shoulder with their arms around each other, and beaming smiles for the few photographers who had managed to squeeze into the building. As the press left and the group broke up, Tremblay tried to get their attention.
"Oi! Let's go outside so that the crowd can take photos too, hein?
Gerald and Franky Adams, Genève's star striker, were the first to hear and start towards the door. Gerald was smiling again.
"You Reçueçards think you're cut above the rest, don't you?" accused Franky, looking at Gerald as if to melt the smile of his face.
"Public faces, Franky," said Gerald.
"Screw you, Gerald. You can't just lord it over the rest of us."
The double doors swung open and the were outside. The flashes of the paparazzi went off like a thousand mini firecrackers. And thus the photo plastered across Reçuecian front pages the next day portrayed the situation of the national team quite well, but strangely, somewhat backwards as well. Gerald beams towards the viewer and ignores the glaring Franky, inches from his face; inside their heads, however, the opposite was happening. Behind them, separated into different groups, is the rest of the squad, coming out of the building, wearing a dis-unified, motley collection of jerseys, divided by club loyalties and tense with rivalry; a perfect description of what Reçueçn will be calling its national team for this Baptism of Fire.

A third of the way into the season, Annedine Sporting and Association Genève are neck and neck, and the table is pretty tight all the way down. A lot of the big names are towards the top, where the only surprise might be that Geneva Lake-Side is above Reçueçn FC and Renwyll. At the bottom, shockingly, last year's champions, Ville-Sur-Rivière, are in last place, having only won a single game on the last matchday against Reçueçn FC. Besides that, no big upsets statistically, although there have been some on the field. The bigest win was Annedine Sporting 6-1 Bonneville Sporting, and the highest scoring game was Heldingen 5, Stomford 4.

Certain players have highly distinguished themselves. Gerald Firaut leads the league in saves, letting in only 4 goals in 8 games. Franky Adams leads the league in goals by a wide margin, with 13 to his name already. An influx of foreign players has also been proving its worth. Dominique Bethel, from 95X, has been the reason that Franky has been able to do some well, helping him out with 9 assists, and knocking in 5 more goals in is own right. Kane Brock, another foreigner, this time from Osarius, has been helping Stomford towards some shut-outs, although they've taken beatings on nights where he hasn't played. And this is just a few in a long list of many proving themselves heros of Reçuecian soccer.

The Second League has also seen some great sporting prowess. A few teams have started to push ahead of the crowd, but last place is still less than seven games back from promotion. Again, there are not too many surprises. Renting ASC's run to the top has been attributed to the leadership of the Cosumarite Jeander Va'Lamar, who took over as team captain after the hometown-boy Heine Pilcz was injured. Meanwhile, Puits Tunnellers, who are out of last place on goal differential, are blaming their poor performance on "our lazy fans, who quit coming to see us play after we lost the league twice in a row and then came in second to last," to quote the team manager. Stats have shown, however, that viewership is up, not only for the team, but for both league as a whole, and it is sure to increase as we continue into the season.

The second third of the season, Heldingen never lost a game, and only drew two. Their comeback would have been even more impressive if they had been further behind--now they simply have a large lead on the rest of the pack and the bookies are already heavily favoring them. Much of their success is due to their new striker this year--he and Franky Adams are now neck and neck on goals scored.

In the Second League, the middle of the season solidified the teams in their positions more than anything else--Tyvania came from second to attain their current position of leader of the field, and Col-De-Môse shot up from seventh to second, but mostly, things are very similar to how they were before. With the possible exception of Puits Tunnellers, who are on a thirteen-game losing streak, probably every team has the chance to do better than they currently are, or alternately, do worse. The battle for promotion is very close, with another group of teams fighting for the spots at the bottom of the table--what woudl be relegation in the first league. As teams strive not to let their fans down and to get back to the First League, you can be sure of one thing--competition will stay tight here until the very end.

Less than four years after its conception, the Reçuecian National Football Association had already faltered. As if to add insult to injury, the association became insolvent smack in the middle of the season, leaving fans hanging. The players went home, UICA bids were left unmade, and the national team dissolved, leaving their stadium to be used for Reçueçn City's after school sports programs. Foreign players flew home in disgust, unpaid, contracts unfulfilled. There were a couple from Ceni, one from Cosumar, one Osarian, three Nepharians, one from 95X... a few from Eastfield lodge, a bunch from Semarland. Almost none were compensated, they found themselves sitting at home, watching their compatriots play out the 60th UICA cycle on their TVs. Reçueçn's sporting reputation, as insignificant as it was, vanished overnight. Competitive international sport had simply ceased to exist.

However, interest in sport, particularly soccer/football, remained high among Reçuecians, even if they had no opportunities to witness local games. Instead, fans who wanted to watch premier professional football had to tune in to games being played abroad. Cable companies began to regularly carry the tournaments of other regions in addition to the already popular world cup. The teams which had formed the RNFA did not fall off the map; instead, they went back to what they had done before--amateur and semi-pro games played without any league structure, typically as a loose collection of friendly and exposition matches. By the time the 74th UICA cycle rolled around, it was clear that the passion and interest for sport in Reçueçn was so high, the situation couldn't last much longer.

Jean-Luc Lassalle had been working as a staffer for the Mayor of Beçonailles in the national legislative chamber at Reçueçn City when people started talking about how glaring the lack of organized sport in Reçueçn had become. Everywhere he went, he heard the same things. It had become an inescapable public discourse. And for Jean-Luc, the youngest staffer in the Mayoral Chamber, more passionate about sport than any MP he knew, it seemed that he was in the right place at the right time to do something about it.

The media had discussed the problem before, but the government never seemed to take any action. People weren't sure if it was really the government's place to do so anyhow; perhaps it ought to be up to the RNFA to get the ball moving, so to speak. Yet when Lassalle thought about the issue, it seemed clear that the government would have to do something. Reçueçn had faced pressure from other countries who had made their displeasure clear after the RNFA had collapsed and their players had been short-shrifted. That called for a unified response, possible only through the government. The RNFA, meanwhile, had no one to hold it accountable, even on the domestic scene. As an organization, it had done its best to ensure fair play among the different clubs, but no one had to set the rules for the association as a whole. A government organization might be able to do for other sports what the RNFA had briefly done for football, as well as be there to bail out the RNFA if things went south again. Plus, the mayor had been looking for a new legislative initiative to raise some hype ahead of his reelection campaign...

Seeing the opportunity available, Jean-Luc jumped at it. The mayor gave his full backing, and as Lassalle put together his proposal and began to bring it up to other MPs, he began to see that it wasn't just the mayor who was in favor. Reçueçn had been itching for a better sports league for what felt like ages, and if Jean-Luc's proposal would bring back organized football, then by Jove, it had the support of every party in Reçueçn's splintered political landscape. They wouldn't stop at soccer, either. The government wanted to ensure that all sports would be provided for. And the government organization responsible couldn't be some little office in the backstreets of Reçueçn City with a couple functionaries poking around, running the bureaucratic ratrace. No, it was going to be a full-blown government ministry, on par with the ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Treasury, and the Interior. And that meant they needed a government minister. The entire country sat up and paid attention for this. A entire new ministry had never been added before. People talked about it at work. Who would lead it? Who would be responsible for bringing Reçueçn back into the world of modern sport?

It was Jean-Luc of course. He had led the debate; he had had the ideas in the first place. It was he who had pushed the bill through the Mayoral Chamber, campaigned for it while they debated it in the House of Lords, and argued for it on TV. So when it came to the House of Lords to name the first new federal Minister since the Treaties of Alliance were signed, it was unanimous--Jean-Luc Lassalle was the only name given.

The new Minister of Sport immediately set to work whipping Reçuecian football, always his first passion, back into shape. The RNFA was called back into existence. The national stadium was given a fresh coat of paint and the national team was called up to start practicing again. Associated, professional soccer was back.

Lassalle made two big decisions. First, no more foreign players were allowed in Reçuecian leagues. He didn't want that kind of responsibility. The RNFA had to prove itself before it would be allowed to hire foreigners. To start, it would have to give back to its own nation--give its own players a place to grow and learn. (No law was made, however, barring Reçuecian players from leaving to play elsewhere if they could.)

Second, the football leagues that had comprised the RNFA would be reformed exactly as they had been, and would resume the season without missing a single match day. Lassalle wanted to see the conclusion to the third season, and playing it out would prevent the teams from squabbling over what rank they should have coming back to league play. And so the very weekend after Jean-Luc Lassalle, Mayoral Chamber staffer, had passed his first legislative initiative, The Reçueçn Sports Bill, he would be at Chapel-Field House, watching them beat Annedine Sporting.

Reçuecians around the country were happy to see association football return, even if the 'reinaugural' season was particularly short. Attendance was at an all time high as fans crowded to stadiums to see in person the return of their favorite teams to the leagues. Games continued to sell out throughout the brief season, which lasted only 10 weeks. In point of fact, the second league had to play two games after the season had ended for their counterparts in the higher tier, due to the fact that the second league, being a bit bigger, as a longer schedule. Pushed by the new Ministry of Sport to standardize, the RNFA has decided that next season, the second league will begin 8 weeks ahead of the first league, so that no breaks will be needed to let them catch up in order to play the final matches simultaneously.

Blue text signifies promotion and qualification for UICA SBCC

Tyvania, which had started off a few points ahead of the pack, was working hard throughout the season to keep that spot on top. Over eleven games, they only lost two, drawing three more. But going into the final match-day, their lead had narrowed to only three points. Meanwhile, Renting ASC and Bayern Heidelberg were tied on points for third place. In the end, second-ranked Col-De-Môse was playing their final match against last place Puits Tunnellers, who only had five wins on the season. They easily took home a 4-1 victory while Tyvania lost a hard-fought 3-4 contest against Actwell, resulting in Col-De-Môse barely edging out Tyvania for first place on goal differential. Renting ASC clinched the final promotion spot with an ending win, but while Hamwich FC caught up to Bayern Heidelberg on points, Heidelberg kept fourth place on goal differential.

Heldingen's lead was never in doubt. They came in swinging and fiercely determined to hang on to their advantage from before the break. Only Bonneville Sporting, Associated Savoie, and Stomford managed to hand them defeats, although Bonneville destroyed them with a 6-3 thrashing.

Reçueçn FC, the nation's most well-known team, was hovering in the top third of the table. They climbed to fourth, dipped back to seventh, but threatened even on the last day to jump back up three places to third place. Gerald Firaut, their keeper, well known for his world cup appearance, managed to maintain the cleanest sheet in the country, desppite the sixth place finish. Association Genève, Reçueçn FC's biggest rival, did better for themselves, solidly lockikng in a 2nd place finish. 'Le Classique,' the annual face-off between the two teams, was the very last match-day, after Genève had already clinched their spot, and they celebrated with a one-nil win at home, denying Reçueçn their chance to claim a UICA slot. Bonneville Sporting and Renwyll won those, meaning Renwyll and Heldingen would both keep perfect streaks of qualifying for UICA competition via league play.

The table was tight at the bottom as well--Arly narrowly avoided relegation, and that only on goal differential. Écho SC, Zimmerich FC, and Ville-Sur-Rivière were not so fortunate. It would be an incredible shock to see Ville-Sur-Rivière winning Reçueçn's first league one season to losing it the next, if we hadn't seen it coming. The warning signs were plenty--their best players, fresh off winning the season, found it easy to sign better contracts, and the decrease in playing quality had been evident in the first two thirds of the season.

We're starting off on a weak note, but it gets better, we promise. Puits Tunnellers have never finished better than second-to-last, and we can't say we expect much more of them this time. We would like to see them start dropping fewer points along the way to last place, however. Given they'll be playing 38 games, is it too much to ask for them to score 38 points this season? They've never done better than 31. They're lucky they're at the bottom of the pyramid or they'd be relegated before you could say "Domodosolla".

The Raptors are the third pro team in the city of Reçueçn. It's not that the city isn't big enough for three of its own teams. Really, the problem is that it's the Raptors who aren't big enough. The Second League lower-mid table was particularly tight last season and Hanting FC could just as easily have finished 10th, or 14th. (They came 12th.) Of all the teams in the Second League, Heidelberg might have the best shot at winning the thing: if the teams coming down from the First League have trouble adjusting to their new context, Bayern Heidelberg is ready and primed from a 4th place finish last season that left the fans wanting more and the team with extra motivation and drive. In fact, they should have been in the Second League last season as well, when they were also set for relegation. No one is quite sure who in the RNFA they paid off to stay up, but an investigation is ongoing and they came 14th a second time in a row in the third season to get relegated anyway, so things aren't looking up for the team. Arly is the conclusion to the season two/season three promotion scandal--when three teams should have gone up, only one did, and that was Arly--who had come fifth in the Second League. Some sort of consequences are on the way for the club, but given the collapse and refounding of the RNFL in the meantime, it's been a long time coming and might still be a while. For now, although their original promotion to the league was unearned, the club will most likely be able to do decently in the middle of the First League table.

Reçueçn FC is the nation's most well-known team, its most popular, and most likely its best. Although their most recent finish was in 6th, they're perfectly capable of winning the league and are liable to do just that. Plenty of NTers call Reçueçn their home during the regular season, and it's not hard to see why. The team's highly defensive strategy is credited with influence the National Team's own style.

We would call Harrim finishing in 5th a fluke if they hadn't also done it the season before. The club has taken advantage of the fresh start offered with the founding of the RNFL to start performing much better than it had been previously. They might just finish in 5th a third time, which would be disappointing for fans and yet still a slight overperformance.

There's a lot of clubs in Reçueçn that call themselves "Something or other Sporting," and it means that their fans can never simply call their club 'sporting' as it would lead to too much confusion. If only one club deserves the title, then it ought to go to Bonneville, who have the best record out of all the 'sporting' clubs. However, it's much easier to just call them 'Bonneville,' so that's what most people do. They got a bit lucky with their 3rd place finish last season, but they should still be able to do well.

Finally we come to last year's champions. Heldingen has been the most consistent UICA representative for Reçueçn, never having missed qualification for at least the globe cup. They'll be looking to pull off the RNFL's first back-to-back championships, and they might be able to pull it off--their team is looking particularly dangerous. Of course, to see if they can do it, we'll have to watch the season unfold...

Pre-Season

Because the Second League has more teams than the First League and thus a longer season, at the suggestion of the Ministry of Sport, the RNFL decided that rather than having the First League take off weeks and have the Second League squeeze in extra matchdays in an effort to catch up, the Second League would start earlier than the First League in a 'pre-season' of sorts, allowing them then to continue at the same pace and wrap up their seasons at the same time.

Eight games in, Ville-Sur-Rivière is in first, but ony by a razor thin margin--Zimmerich and Heidelberg are even on points and four more teams are within a game of first place. All the teams you would think would be near the top are near the top: Écho is there, as are Hamwich, Saint-Carl, and a bit further down, Actwell. Cinizio is the notable underperformer here, with only a single win in eight games: a narrow one-nil squeak past Slynwell on the first day. The Reçueçn Raptors and Puits Tunnellers round out the bottom of the table, to no one's surprise.

The pre-season is also the time for international football's preliminary rounds. Four Reçueçian teams went to the Dwile Invitational Tournament, with very little success. In eight games, the Reçueçian teams managed only a single win between them, as Bonneville Sporting beat Darmen's Tempala United Saints three to two and then still managed to be eliminated on away goals. No good omens here for Reçueçn's return to international club football.
