I see one flaw in that design. I can catch your blade through the hole in the middle and stab you in the face. All I have to do is step to one side and thrust through the hole. Somehow though I feel the point is rather moot given that it is unlikely anyone will go fencing with it against other swords.

Well it depends on the fighting system you are using. But overall blades will be used to deflect thrusts aimed at you. If I tried to thrust at your face you would put your blade in the way and push mine away. With this thing it is reasonably conceivable that you could faint a thrust and than, when he tries to block push your sword through the opening and cut him down.

Or more disconcertingly just catch the thing with the tip of a spear or polearm and rip it out of the users hands.

People simply can't plan something that quickly, and it would be extremelly hard to do and pointless. It would just be better to stab around it, because he could be just as quick and exploit the fact that your weapon is now through his weapon, making you pretty much defenceless unless you step back far and quick enough before he reacts.

It leaves you open to being hooked though. And someone who knows what he is doing might be able to abuse that. I can't give you hard data since I've newer fenced against anything of that shape. But you know... And I can think of at least several ways to disarm you if I had a spear just off the top of my head.

If you're using a spear against someone with a knife, 9.5 times out of 10 you'll just have to quickly thrust at him and he won't have time nor the effective means to block or dodge. If he does manage to, you can just try again.

This blade is issued as a mark of status for joining the standing army; which, might I add is seen in the same way as a Pugio was to the Roman Legions; a tool of killing and utilitarian applications.

It's shape is drawn from both a germanicized pugio, a cherusker (the guard) and blending a seax with an Arkansas Toothpick for general blade profile with a healthy heaping dose of Victorian innovation for the brass backing on the blade.

Langmesser is a very broad term since it just means "long knife". That said, shorter messers were pretty much just EDC, not weapons of war.

Kinda want to use a British-style regimental system for my army, but I guess it only really works over here because we're so small. Not sure how it'd work in a country roughly the size of Kazakhstan with a much higher population density. Thoughts?
