Military Ground Vehicles of Your Nation [NO MECHS] Mark 8

Postby Questers » Tue Jan 20, 2015 9:26 am

Placeholder OP because old thread might hit 500 when I'm asleep. For now, here's the useful links from Anemos' last OP, just to preserve them here.

AND THE GOLDEN RULE
No mechs. This means no legged vehicles, or any sort of vehicles that rely on legs for movement, even if designed to fulfill the same role as tanks. This includes hybrids like Ghost in the Shell think-tanks and Tachikomas. If you're looking for a thread about mechs, please follow this link

Gun Calculator

For those problem with mediafire.. you may try using this to view the file instead

View

alternate links

http://depositfiles.com/files/5m1i2pchz

It will calculate muzzle velocity, recoil force, inflight velocity of a projectile and it may provide simple assessement whether your vehicle can safely fire the gun without causing uncomfortable vibrations to the crew.

The spreadsheet is largely based on "Technology of Tanks" by Ogorkieswicz and a book about theory and practice about ballistics and gun designs.

Future updates may include some "penetration" calculator to calculate penetration of projectile to object other than metals (say..concrete)

Final remarks is use at your own risk.. hmm it's still pretty much in infacy.. many stuff there need to be cross checked and debugged. I'm actually want to use Odermatt's equation for calculating maximum pressure but it doesn't seem to work..so i'm stick to Technology of Tanks.

Contact information is provided inside the sheet.

Any modifications big or small are fine.

I have redone my "free tracks" sheet into a "Free parts" sheet, so it is now allot neater.

The purpose of this list is to bring together in one place any resources the erstwhile denizens of this thread have deemed worthy of attention while following the difficult path of an NS ground vehicle designer. Separated into categories for easy browsing, this listing will be available for use by any looking for further guidance in designing vehicles, with (hopefully) fairly consistent updates keeping the list up-to-date and in line with current designers' needs.

M41A1 Troubadour

Protection: 20-100mm

Armament:

110mm AT Gun
Pintle-mounted 8mm machine gun

Crew: 5 (Commander, Driver, Gunner, Loader/Radio Operator, Loader)

As WWII moved into 1941, Fordorsia started to employ more heavily armoured tank destroyers for use against the increasing numbers of heavy tanks being used on all sides.
One of the most famous of these tank destroyers was the M41 Troubadour. First put into service in 1941 as an infantry support tank, it's 110mm gun allowed it to engage all types of ground targets with great effect and still keep up with the infantry it was supporting. It's relatively thick frontal armour gave it a good chance of holding it's own against lower-caliber guns, but it's thin side and rear armour, as well as it's open-topped turret, made it extremely vulnerable to being flanked and attacked by infantry.
350 M41A1s were made and put into service by 1944.

M41A2 Troubadour

Protection: 20-135mm

Armament:

130mm AT Gun
Hull-mounted 8mm machine gun

Crew: 5 (Commander, Driver, Gunner, Loader/Radio Operator, Loader)

In 1945, as many countries were fielding the largest and most heavily armoured vehicles of the war, it became apparent that the M41 would need to be converted into a dedicated tank destroyer instead of being used for infantry support. The remaining 324 M41A1s were converted and continued to see service.
Changes included a fully-enclosed turret with a new, much thicker mantle, as well as a new 130mm AT gun, making the M41A2 lethal to whatever tank it came across. Other changes included making the front hull one large, sloped compartment for the driver, instead of the single box compartment of the M41A1 that left the turret ring exposed, as well as giving him a hull-mounted 8mm machine gun for defense against infantry, though it was commonly removed and the mount covered with steel plates by the crews.

M41A3 Troubadour

Protection: 30-200mm

Armament:

130mm AT Gun
Co-axial 7.65mm machine gun

Crew: 5 (Commander, Driver, Gunner, Loader, Loader)

In 1960, explosive reactive armour, or ERA, had been introduced to Fordorsia. This allowed for vehicles to have significant added protection without making them overly heavy or complex. The remaining 246 M41A2s that survived WWII were converted to accommodate the ERA. This meant they were fitted with new turrets, a new driver's compartment, and side skirts. The new turret featured a more sloped face, as well as improved optics for the commander, gunner and driver. The whole front half of the turret was covered in ERA, with the rear being covered with slat armour.
The front of the hull, now with the machine gun removed and made co-axial for the main gun, was now one large, featureless slope covered completely in ERA.
As well as the protective equipment, the M41s were also given new engines, transmissions and the most advanced fire control systems available in Fordorsia. The radio was also moved next to the Commander, so that he was now able to control it directly instead of having to relay orders through one of the loaders.

It is estimated that the M41, throughout it's entire service history, was responsible for the destruction of well over 3,000 vehicles, a considerable percentage being late heavy tanks, making it amongst Fordorsia's most successful vehicles of the war, second only the the M42B.
After several minor upgrades and changes in the 70s and 80s, the venerable M41 Troubadour is still in service with Fordorsia, making it the country's longest-serving vehicle.

What is a good SPAA? Are guns alone enough or are missiles needed?

I've been working on tank gun progression for Estovnia and was wondering how it sounded so far:

76mm (1942 - 1948)
84mm (1944 - 1950)
94mm (1949 - 1985)
114mm (1969 - Present)
