Gambling

Postby Manisdog » Wed Dec 24, 2014 12:10 pm

My parents never like it but I love gambling and it is an harmless vice, the only problem is that I need to travel so many kilometers to gamble because everywhere else it is illegal. I would love it if gambling was legalized and casinos were taxed, this would create employment for so many people and people would get a chance to try there hands. Whenever, I go to Goa, I would go and sit in a casino for a pretty much the entire day. I am a an ethical individual so I don't do anything that is illegal. so I just wait once a year to gamble. The argument over here is that people like me should not be given so much trouble since gambling kills nobody and is not a crime.

The Indian gambling market is around 60 Billion dollars and if you think of it so much of potential tax revenue is being lost, even a 10 % tax could fetch the GOI around 6 billion dollars, I mean so many of these illegal gambling dens, where the most uncouth of lumpen come and gamble, gambling is becoming a criminal industry. It is because there is nothing that could be done, the recent match fixing scandals and everything happening shows what happens when you make gambling illegal and in the hands of criminals. Casinos are for employment and could employ alot of people. Tourism would be boosted if gambling is legalized, gambling is a victimless crime and should not be illegal.

Why do you think of legalizing gambling
Is it unethical NSG ?

It isn't exactly totally harmless, but regardless I don't see why it shouldn't be legalized.

Risks should not be taken in your life. Gambling and risk taking has never done any good for anyone who has everything to lose. Be smarter with the money you have and you will be rewarded. I want to see gambling banned.

So long as the stock market exists, a ban on gambling is absurdly hypocritical. That said, the government really shouldn't be in the business of providing an outlet for gambling (lottery).

I mean if I want to do xyz thing with my money than I should be allowed to, the government has no right to tell anyone what to do with there money, if I am not harming others and contributing to the economy and paying my taxes

Gambling is quite dangerous if abused. I'm in favour of gambling, but the person should accept that they are taking a risk.

You can get addicted to anything. Drugs, gambling, internet games...

That being said, when engaged in responsibly, I see nothing wrong with gambling. And really, "gambling responsibly" pretty much boils down to "Don't gamble what you cannot afford to lose." If you've got a little extra cash, it's one thing; if you win, awesome, if you lose (and odds are you will,) it's not going to jeopardize your ability to meet your expenses. It's a problem when you start gambling with things like your rent or food budget, because in the end, you're NOT going to earn a living by gambling.

As someone who is from Nevada... Wow, you are so, so wrong.

It actually does cause problems, lots of them. Nevada has a lot of social ills, many of which can be tied to gaming. That's not to say that I wish it were illegal, but those calling for it to BE legal had best look at it with eyes wide open and not the glitter that the casinos show you.

Gambling is not necessarily pure luck. Ever heard of poker? Much more skill involved in that than with the stock market. Both are gambling.

I am going to be writing this as someone from Reno, Nevada.

To me, personal freedom is a very important thing. So I would not support a ban on gambling. But I would hope that people can choose a different path for pleasure. Gambling is something that can turn into a bad situation quickly. Why not give the money to people in need, or spend it on going to an amusement park with the family? Those are activities that fill the heart with joy without any sort of risk. I would support people voluntarily coming together and closing casinos in favor of a cleaner and more hospitable environment.

This is a tricky position for me to take, as my state's economy derives a lot of revenue from the practice. But I do see potential for Reno and Nevada as a whole to switch to other forms of production. In fact, my city has been looking for ways to do that in the light of Las Vegas' growth, and the legalization of gambling elsewhere.

An anecdote. Two years ago, during our usual spring visit to our extended family every two years, my parents, brother and I were invited to a wedding reception in a hotel in Jamnagar. The night before the reception we played cards in the hotel restaurant. Now at the time I was 11 and my brother 7. It was very obviously just a harmless game and no money was in sight. But we were kicked out of the restaurant for "gambling."

Stupid Indian law strikes again!

I guess I have a stereotypically juvenile attitude towards the question of whether gambling should be legal (in this society of course, not a communist one). People should be educated about the risks of gambling and made fully aware of all potential consequences so that they can make sensible, informed decisions, but ultimately, they should have the freedom to choose what they want to do with their money and religious rules definitely should not be forced onto people who may not follow that religion. I'm 13, gimme a break.

Please, diversify quickly. With just a few law changes in California (ie liberalization of gambling market), the California legislature could destroy Nevada's economy.

I definitely wouldn't go as far as to say that, especially considering Las Vegas' status.

But Reno itself does have some opportunities in the horizon. Among them being a new Tesla factory being built just to the east.

Anyways, my main wish is for people to voluntarily not gamble. I want to see areas focused on that practice become more family friendly and business oriented.

If nobody ever took risks then nothing interesting would ever happen, life would be completely boring. And people should be able to do what they want with their money, since it's their money.

I sincerely hope that is not your sole ideas of fun in life. Wihtout some sort of risk, literally nothing would have ever happened in history or in anyone's life. Besides, risk does not necessarily imply life threatening danger. Gambling is not a life threatening risk. Hell, talking to a specific someone is a risk, driving to the store is a risk, walking down stairs is a risk. There are risks nearly every second you breathe.
