General:

LRC-2100 is a family of long range cruise missiles developed for use by Nachmerian naval vessels and aircraft. The missiles are characterized by long range and their ability to utilize the BASTIOM battle management system, as well as their emphasis on low radar and thermal profile. The family includes several variants meant for different mission profiles(see below).

The entire range of LRC-2100 missiles is capable of launch from aircraft, naval vessels (including submarines) and ground launchers. When launch from aircraft the missile is carried lacking its launch booster rocket, and is simply free dropped. The booster is required only for vertical launch such as from warships or ground facilities. In cruise the missile is propelled by the CTJ-120 turbofan engine with 1000lbs of thrust. Some versions of the missile have an attack booster rocket used for terminal propulsion.

The body of the LRC-2100 is angled to reduce its RADAR returns, and is mostly constructed from RADAR absorbing polymers. The Turbofan intake is S-shaped and its exhaust is covered by the elongated, triangular shaped rear of the missile, and has a diffuser cooling system. These features reduce the IR signature created by the engine and further complicate detection. To stabilize and control its flight two upward angled ruddervators(rudder elevators) are located to the rear of the missile, while two centrally mounted, retractable winglets provide lift.

Sensory and Guidance:

All LRC-2100 variants share the same basic guidance system. The system combines GPS navigation with Inertial Navigation. While mainly relying on GPS, Inertial Navigation is retained for situations in which GPS is non-functioning or unavailable. To augment the GPS/INS all variants use other guidance systems depending on their targets, these systems include terrain-comparison, automatic target recognition (by IIR), and active RADAR and emission seekers, and the BASTION system. The specific systems used by each variant are detailed below.

Each LRC-2100 is capable of being programmed with 16 targets, and is also capable of target reprogramming in midair. Combined with BASTION this allows the missile to automatically change target if it has been destroyed. It is also possible to self-destroy the missile in mid-cruise.

BASTION networking:

As mentioned above, the LRC-2100 has networking abilities that combine it into the BASTION battle management system. Using satellite communications the LRC-2100 now is able to:

*Receive targeting information from BASTION and units with satellite communications equipment. The LRC-2100 can be retargeted in midair by the launching platform, and the LRC-2100TS variant can be re-targeted by ground and air units using BSATION.

*Receive and utilize BASTION and BASTION-ASO data regarding enemy and friendly forces. This allows the missile to change its course of attack automatically if needed (to avoid threats or detection), avoid engagement of friendly forces, and change target in case its target has already been destroyed.

*Transmit sensory data into the BASTION and BASTION-ASO networks. This includes imagery from IIR seekers, RADAR images, and emissions data. This makes the LRC-2100 an added pair of ears and eyes in the battlefield, giving commanders data from areas deep behind enemy lines. It is especially useful when the data is used to change the flight paths or attack profiles of other missiles.

Variants:

LRC-2100GA "Yore" (First Rain) - The ground attack variant is essentially the most basic variant of the missile. It is guided to its target by Inertial and GPS navigation augmented by a terrain reference system and image comparison. On the cruise to the target the missile flies at an altitude of 40 meters to allow terrain reference, and upon reaching the target compares the target to the image stored in the mission profile to ensure accuracy. The GA variant is designed to attack stationary targets such as buildings and bridges, but can also attack naval targets.

LRC-2100SGA "Nakam" (Vengeance)- The Strategic Ground Attack is identical to the GA variant but carries a 200kt nuclear warhead.

LRC-2100TS "Seraph" (Burning Angel) - The tactical support variant differs from the GA in payload and guidance systems. The payload of the TS comprises of 90 4.5kg bomblets. 45 of these bomblets are Anti-Armor charges and 50 are Anti-Personnel Charges. The Anti-Armor bomblets are arrow shaped tandem HEAT devices that explode on contact and penetrate up to 600mm of steel (after ERA). The Anti-Personnel charges are thermobaric devices with a killing radius of 10 meters. The missile is guided, like the GA version, by inertial and GPS navigation to the target area. Terminal guidance can be done by image comparison. Unlike other variants the TS is capable of changing its target not only by orders from its launching platform, but also from other units using BASTION. The BATION user, if pre-notified of the specific missile allocated to him, can direct the missile to a target and supply it with IR imagery or even laser guidance. This allows the TS to be used tactically by ground forces against specific targets, similarly to close air support assets. The missile can release all 90 sub munitions at once or in batches of 30, allowing it to attack 3 separate targets in proximity.

LRC-2100AS "Nach'shol" (Tidal Wave) - The Anti-Shipping variant differs from the GA variant in guidance, payload and propulsion. The AS is guided on the cruise by Inertial and GPS navigation, but it flies at sea skimming altitude and therefore cannot utilize the terrain reference system. It therefore uses only GPS and Inertial Navigation. In terminal guidance it is guided by a combination of IIR seeker with image comparison (if image of the target exists), Active RADAR and Lock-On-Jam passive sensors. This means that the LRC-2100AS will engage the target even if it has a low RADAR or low IR signature, and even more easily if it attempts to jam the missiles sensors. In addition to this the LRC-2100AS is equipped with its own jammer which creates false returns to confuse and lower the efficiency of CIWS usually carried by naval vessels. As the missile is expected to be engaged in the terminal part of the attack, it has a solid fuel booster that accelerates it to a speed of 3 mach for the last 500 meters of the attack. The extra weight of the sensory systems and mainly the solid fuel rocket require a reduction in payload to maintain overall weight down. The AS variant carries a tandem warhead. The leading charge is a 100kg explosively shaped penetrator with a lead liner that can penetrate up to a meter of steel. Following the ESP is a 200kg, tungsten capped HE charge. It is meant to kinetically penetrate at the point weakened by the lead charge and time fused to explode inside the vessel.

LRC-2100AR "Lom" (Crowbar) - The Anti-Radiation version is in essence a combination of the LRC-2100 with the UAR-650 "Lockpick" Anti-Radiation Drone. The AR is designed to attack sources of electronic emissions, mainly to suppress enemy air defenses, but also to attack communication hubs. The AR variant has the same propulsion system as the AS variant, meaning that a solid fuel booster allows it to accelerate to 2 mach speed on final attack. The reason is to avoid small arms and light AA weapons on final approach.

In addition to the GPS and Inertial navigation system, the AR uses an Electronic Emissions seeker and IIR seeker. The first is used to detect emissions from enemy RADAR and radio communication. The LRC-2100AR is launched by booster rocket or dropped from an aircraft, and then switches on its turbofan to cruise to the "patrol zone". The “patrol zone” is an area defined by the user in which the missile automatically conducts a search for hostile electronic emissions. The missile patrols at an altitude of 50-500 meters according to choice. When the Emissions Seeker picks up emissions, the main processing unit compares them first to a friend or foe list.

If the emissions are hostile, they are then compared to the priority list. The list is not only a scale of target importance; it also refers to other variables, like the amount of fuel left in the missile. For example, the missile can be programmed to only attack system X, unless it has less than 20 minutes of flight left at which point it is to attack systems Y or Z. In short, the target selection is highly flexible, to compliment the long endurance of the missile. When the missile identifies a hostile target which is also on top of its priority list, it flies towards it. The GPS guidance allows the missile to pin point the location of the target even if the target shuts down its RADAR or other emitting system. The IIR seeker allows the missile to identify the target at a range of 10km and further increase accuracy.

When reaching a distance of 500 meters from the target, the missile climbs up and then dives towards the target, starting up the Attack Rocket engine. This propels the missile towards the target at Mach 2 and combined with its small size makes it difficult for it for small arms or short range AA to intercept. Unlike the UAR-650 which carries a very small warhead, the LRC-2100AR carries a 350kg HE payload. The payload is sufficient to not only damage but usually completely destroy any SAM installation or battery, and many cases will bring down an entire building or position when attacking communication hubs.
