The conflict in Blue Zone 1 and Red Zone 1 has come to a close after less than a month of hostilities, with the resistance forces of Blue Zone 1 conceding defeat to the allied forces following the collapse of their government and military defeat. Whatever land Blue Zone 1 once owned has been divided up between The Quendi and Panzerjargernargle.
With a ceasefire now implemented in the region, the secessionist colony of Red Zone 1 is now at peace, though Quendi peacekeepers still remain.

Radimir Mitya (Marshal of the Red Army) had this to say:
"While we are pleased with how quickly the situation was resolved and that our forces did not need to engage the enemy, Blue Zone 1 is still a threat to the free world, and the GpZGB's ultimatum still stands. We must remain vigilant and be prepared to act quickly and decisively in case of terrorist attacks."

14-year-old Emma Ferd, fan of the Kalasparatan Genco City Zebras, was arrested for vandalism of public property after a drunk rampage following her team's loss in this weeks' Kalasparatan Games. After destroying the lights in the train she was riding on and setting it alight, she was incapacitated by police, who shot her in both legs, and is expected to recieve life in prison plus 567 hours (23.625 days) community service cleaning graffiti. She will also have a hole drilled into her spine, for reasons nobody can fathom.

"This is another case of Kalasparata's supposedly far-reaching civil liberties and corrupt police force gone wrong," says Gavriil Stepan, a representative for the Zavod soviet. "The question we must all ask ourselves is, first, how does a 14-year-old obtain so much alcohol as to become heavily drunk and nobody bats an eyelid? Secondly, what kind of monsters are in the Kalasparatan police and judicial system? I have heard that the officer who shot this poor, unarmed girl will recieve a medal for his 'quick thinking', and who sentences someone to life in prison over vandalism?"

"I disagree," retorts police officer Susanna Lyudmila. "Kalasparata is a place where 14-year-olds are apparently allowed to be entirely intoxicated in public. If you give someone that much freedom, and they cannot take responsibility for their own actions, then they should be punished. Yes, the punishment was entirely too harsh, but I would not be so quick to insult the Kalasparatan judiciary."

Today's poll: Was the punishment meted to Emma Ferd too harsh?

A man in Serov has been charged with keeping a wyvern without a license and abuse of the national animal after police, who had been called to the area after reports of suspicious behaviour, found that he had chained up a wyvern on the floor of his shed. The malnourished creature, which is almost fully-grown, was carefully removed by animal control and is currently undergoing medical checks at the Serov Zoo.

"This is a blot on our national pride," one officer at the scene commented. "What possesses someone to commit such an act against an animal which has been the symbol of our nation for over five hundred years?"

The offender was unavailable for comment, but police are still trying to figure out how he managed to capture and bind the wyvern, and what he had hoped to achieve by doing so.

Public transport was delayed in Arsk this morning as a bear decided to take a nap directly in front of the bus station. All outgoing buses were rerouted through the entrance to the station until the bear moved on some five hours later, causing minor delays.

A cease-and-desist order from capitalist global media conglomerate Whopping Media Group (WMG) was filed today against the Classics channel 97.7FM for copyright infringement for use of pirated film soundtracks and other copyrighted music without permission. The notice was met with raucous laughter from radio presenters before being duly ignored.

Civil war has broken out in the capital, Galatea, of the small nation of Rhannu. The Emperor appears to have been gravely injured in the conflict, and the revolutionaries, although a minority, are laying siege to the city.

"It is the Great Revolution all over again," notes Radimir Mitya, in his first public appearance this week. "We must assist the revolutionary forces to fight back against the oppressive imperialist government, with which we are all too familiar. Almost one hundred years ago, we were in the same predicament, but the defeat of the monarchy has brought us together ever stronger!"

Grandian military officials are concerned, however, that the leader of the Rhannu rebels, with his unrealistic promises, may be unable to run the country if by some miracle they manage to take power.

"If the rebels conquer, their proposed state does not seem to be particularly stable," says foreign minister Alyona Zaytsev. "If the Rhannu are to throw off the shackles of oppression for good, the rebels will need economic as well as military aid if their entire revolution is not to fall apart at the seams."

Controversy today as a group of religious practitioners protested in front of the council house in Chehachkov.
"Openly displaying our faith should not be a crime!" announced a protestor, who remains anonymous.

"Decriminalising open practice of religion will lead to budget deficits and political problems," says Feliks Timurovich Saveli of the Chehachkov soviet. "We will have to reopen the old Orthodox churches, which are currently a tourist attraction, to religious services, which will mean time and money being poured into silly superstitions which have no place in our society. And it will go further! The religious will want their beliefs represented in parliament, or have their nonsense being taught in schools. We will end up losing much of the progress we have made in the last 81 years to kissing religious arse."

"Recall that since the establishment of the socialist government, we have had a separation of church and state, a law which will never be changed," says passerby Yuri Opokin, one of many we interviewed on the subject. "I say we should allow religion to be practiced openly, but those who choose to do so must remember that it has no place in our government. The soviets and the schools will remain secular, but people should have the right to believe or teach their children whatever they want."

The protest today was organised over the internet, via a website for the religious in Grandais. Although at current it does not seem to have any objectionable content, the website will be monitored in case of anti-governmental activity.

A minor earthquake in Nolinsk has caused some property damage, including the collapse of an old wooden store, believed to have been built before the revolution. The quake, believed to be 4.9 on the Richter scale, lasted only a few seconds, but ruined some older buildings which cannot withstand the shaking.
"We are all very saddened by this turn of events," says Simon Waldemar, a German immigrant who has owned the store for some ten years. "This store was very dear to the town, and the emotional impact will be felt for some time."

The eastern side of the store, plus over half of a balcony on the second floor, has completely collapsed.
In the reconstruction, measures will be taken to make the building stronger against quakes.

A conference against Great Nepal broke out into violence yesterday. The delegate of terrorist organisation Blue Zone 1 had for some time been shouting nationalist slogans and claiming that they were going to gas everyone, despite having almost no military force whatsoever. He was bound and gagged by the Bladian representative, but armed guards belonging to Blue Zone 1 and Great Nepal entered and almost broke out into a firefight. The Blue Zone 1 terrorists were detained by Bladia and the Blue Zone 1 delegate was executed by Great Nepalese SS troops. Following the bloodshed, the conference was quickly concluded and all delegates returned home safely.

Radimir Mitya, who, some say, has been spending far too much time on TV lately, was present at the event.
"These senseless acts are merely further proof of the threat of Blue Zone 1. Furthermore, the only conclusion the conference gave was to sign a treaty absolving Great Nepal of its condemnation, a position which we have vehemently opposed. We will not under any circumstances allow the repeal of Great Nepal's condemnation and do not trust their promises to change. Great Nepal is nothing more than a violent barbarian who has flaunted its power for far too long!"

National News

Citizens are concerned that our Marshal of the Red Army, Radimir Mitya, has been making too many public appearances on television lately.

"I am tired of seeing his face whenever I turn on the TV," says a citizen who left her name only as 'Eva'. "We have a Chief Spokesperson for a reason, and it is rather unsettling when our military commander has been on television more this week than the state figurehead. I don't want to hear his boring nationalist waffle. He has a point, yes, but everything he says sounds exactly the same. It's always 'up the workers' this and 'destroy Great Nepal' that. When I watch the news I want to know what's going on in the world. I'm happy to be indoctrinated any other time, but if I see that man on my television again I'm going to change the channel and watch cartoons instead."

"I like the guy," says Susanna Lyudmila, who has also been on television once already this week. "If you don't like what he's saying, just zone out and fantasise about his hot military uniform. Mmm. I'll let him invade my regions anyday."

KidWorld Kingdom, a nation in which children rule, recently emerged again into the global spotlight after the children regained power.
Unfortunately, many nations decided that they would take military action against KidWorld in an attempt to restore power to the adults. Grandais is one of the few who has pledged support to the children. As of recently, the manevolent monarchical dictatorship of Khorata has launched a nuclear weapon against KidWorld Kingdom.

Yegor Varnava, our Chief Spokesperson, today made a speech condemning those against KidWorld Kingdom.
"This is a sad day, that so many nations would so quickly attack a poor, defenceless nation of children. Have they no dignity or morality? Although substantial damage has already been done, we must act quickly to help KidWorld against those who would rather see it wiped from the earth."

Open practice of religion has been decriminalised after protests a few days ago. Citizens are now permitted to wear religious symbols and clothing in public, and the religious are allowed to pray in the old pre-Revolution Orthodox churches, which until now have existed only for tourism, so long as it is quiet and does not disturb others. However, proselytisation is still illegal, and officials have stressed that religion has no place in government and laws will never be made or adjusted to give preference to the religious.

"It is a step in the right direction," says Vera Yeva, who until recently was afraid to give her name on public television that she might be arrested by intelligence officials or be the subject of abuse.
We stress that physical or verbal abuse against anyone on the basis of their beliefs, race, nationality, and so forth, has never been encouraged in Grandais and anyone caught committing such acts will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Blue Zone 1, the former terrorist organisation, no longer exists. It was wiped from the earth by the Coalition of Moderators in a shower of nuclear missiles. 43,000 Quendi peacekeepers were also killed in the crossfire.

"We extend solidarity to the many Quendi peacekeepers who were killed in this attack," Yegor Varnava reported today. "It is a tragedy that this happened, although accidents can sometimes occur in nuclear warfare. On the plus side, Blue Zone 1 will no longer be a threat to anyone. We can rest easy for the moment."

More ruthless bloodshed and exaggerated punishments in Kalasparata yesterday as two young girls, one sixteen and one nine, face court. The former has been hit with a 45,000 kalaspi fine for refusing a seventeen-year-old girl entry to the school toilet, and the latter is having some substance injected into her eyes after beating a 13-year-old.

"Surely a seventeen-year-old would be smart enough to know that there are other toilets on campus," pointed out Dmitry Dorofeyev, citizen and administrator of the Facebook group Alliterated Grandians. "How can any child expect to pay 45,000 of any currency? The kalaspi is even more powerful than the Universal Dollar! Kalasparata is clearly a broken and greedy capitalist society which seeks nothing more than to extract vast amounts of cash from all of its citizens. No wonder it can pay for all these strange 'scientific advances'."

"The indescribably disgusting punishments meted out by Kalasparata on a daily basis are those I'd expect from some of the more infamous and evil dictatorships of the World, such as the Kraven Corporation or Doomingsland," announced Branimir Sergeyevich Chehachkov, General Secretary of the GpZGB. "We cannot allow these atrocities to continue. If Kalasparata continues to bring itself into the ranks of some of the most evil nations on earth, then we may have to take military action."

National News

National fever is in the air in the lead-up to this year's Revolution Day. It's hard to avoid one of the many street markets selling small Grandian flags or other national merchandise. This year's celebration will be much less lavish than the 80th anniversary celebrations in 2009. Yegor Varnava will make his usual speech, but there will not be a military parade or anything too expensive due to the massive expenses incurred last year. The Chief Spokesperson advises that all Grandians take the time this year to celebrate freedom with their family and comrades.

BREAKING NEWS!

As of today, we are at war with Kalasparata. Faced with increasing public tensions and anger at Kalasparata's actions, Chief Spokesperson Yegor Varnava today made an announcement declaring war on the Central Democratic Republic, mentioning a long list of Kalasparata's atrocities.
The declaration has been met with almost unanimous support, however some are criticising the attack being so close to Revolution Day.

"Our enemies never rest," says Radimir Mitya, in his first appearance on TV in some weeks. "We cannot call off any potential military operation simply because it falls close to a national holiday. Although I am sure our troops will be disappointed that they cannot celebrate our national holiday with their families, we had to act now to ensure that no more people will fall victim to Kalasparata's tyranny. We will run a special television broadcast on Revolution Day to honour our troops fighting for freedom overseas."

Война в Каласпарата
War in Kalasparata

Tragically, over 80 Grandians have already lost their lives in the fight against the capitalist oppressors of Kalasparata. However, the soldiers of the mighty Red Army are quickly gaining ground, having slain at least one thousand capitalist scum with some thousands more injured. The cowards have already called a temporary ceasefire, which lasted for three hours before conflict resumed.

Harsh weather mandated a temporary retreat, but conditions have cleared and the Red Army now continues its advance.

Трагедия! 300 погибших в атомный взрыв!
Tragedy! 300 killed in atomic blast!

Revolution Day celebrations were marred with the announcement that a nuclear weapon had been launched on our forces in Kalasparata. Three hundred were killed by the initial blast and shockwave, but there have been only minor illnesses from fallout due to aerial detonation.

Yegor Varnava, after making a touching speech in memory of those killed in the blast, has condemned Kalasparata's actions, both in launching the weapon on its own territory, and its announcement that it will send all criminals out on the battlefield, often completely unarmed, and some as young as sixteen.

"Kalasparata must not think very highly of us if it thinks we will kill unarmed civilians in cold blood," he continued. "Words cannot describe how horrible these actions are, and they are completely unjustifiable."

There has been an announcement that all criminals sent out unarmed onto the battlefield by Kalasparata will be elegible for asylum in Grandais given a period of rehabilitation and stress therapy. Although Grandian soldiers already have orders not to harm civilians, any unarmed criminals in the battlefield will be picked up by peacekeepers and transported to rehabilitation facilities.

Radimir Mitya also made an announcement.
"Kalasparata has broken the rules of engagement by launching weapons of mass destruction," he stated. "We have had no choice but to launch a counterattack of ten nuclear warheads against Kalasparata. They have not been aimed at civilian targets, but undoubtedly due to its shameless actions of putting civilians on the front lines, there will be casualties."

The flag mourning those who have died in war will be flown in place of the national flag for a period of at least three days hence.

Кончилась война!
The war is over!

After almost a week of hostilities, the conflict in Kalasparata has come to a close. There was no victor, since a peace treaty was signed to immediately end conflict.

In total, four hundred and thirty-two Grandians were killed in the conflict.

Radimir Mitya has been fired from the position of Marshal of the Red Army following his launching of nuclear warheads on Kalasparata without permission from higher authority. He has been replaced by Svetlana Ishutin, and will be court-martialled on Wednesday.

Radimir Mitya, the former Marshal of the Red Army, was court-martialled today and found guilty of war crimes and disregard for authority after launching nuclear warheads on Kalasparata in the war last week without the approval of authorities or warning to Kalasparata. However, citizens were divided on his punishment; some demanded his execution while others simply wanted him imprisoned for life. He is currently being detained at Serov maximum security prison while a decision is being made.

Members of the Grandian Nationalist Front, an illegal and racist far-Right fringe group, protested outside the prison barracking for his freedom and chanted anti-Kalasparatan slogans. Although they were pursued, they escaped before arrests could be made.

"It must be noted," said Svetlana Ishutin, the new Marshal, "that Radimir's actions will never be tolerated. Ours is a system of cooperation, and breaking the rules will lead to heavy punishment."

The debate continues.

More tragedy in Kalasparata today as a terrorist attack kills millions in the overcrowded Ipsola Central District. All of the politicians were simultaneously killed as the attack was planned to coincide with the annual nationwide politician meeting.
In the aftermath of the attack, a ban on face-covering headscarves has been imposed, since the attacker was an infamous terrorist posing as a Muslim woman.

"It is important to remember that in most cases, it is the woman's decision to wear the hijab or burqa," says Lisa Weston, a tourist. "This decision will only lead to more persecution against Muslims and unrest among the Muslim population. The answer is not to ban the headscarf, but implement more thorough methods to find weapons on people in diplomatic buildings."

"I think this is a great idea," says bus driver Lyov Genya. "To the common person, these all-covering headscarves look threatening and can frighten many people, especially in the aftermath of a terrorist attack. If people don't wear them in public, it can lower the threat of violence against these women who might otherwise be abused by assuming people. Furthermore, for the same reason we didn't allow wearing of religious apparel - such as headscarves - in public until a few months ago: it's just not right that these people are obligated to wear them in a non-religious country."

Citizens have voiced concern over the vast amount of corporate advertising present in Kalasparatan News.

"The news is for, well, news," proclaims Alisa Klava, "not selling your disgusting capitalist products. I don't live in Kalasparata nor do I ever plan to go there, but if their real news is anything like their news website, I don't want to have loud and obnoxious messages flashed at me every ten seconds telling me to buy President Homer Soft Drinks or Dertas Will Kits. What's with all the death-related advertising there, anyway? We all know that capitalism thrives on profit and advertising, but there is a point where this needs to stop and they've clearly passed it."

A fire at a coal plant in Serov has killed three and sent choking black smoke into the sky. Serov remains one of the only cities in the nation still running fossil fuel plants, since one of coal's byproducts, coke, is required to produce iron and steel. The upset has also caused blackouts as parts of the electric grid have been shut down while the problem is brought under control. Angry citizens of the largest Grandian city not to have a nuclear power plant say that this is as good a time as ever to implement one, however, Serov remains a tourist detination for nuclear-fearing hippies.

Рождение Нации (The Birth of a Nation), the first high-budget war epic produced in Grandais with government approval, was released today to raucous hype and mixed expectations, but looks set to break all previous box-office records, including 1998's Смерть и Цветы, the current record-holder for highest-grossing film in Grandais. Reviews have so far been immensely positive, although some worry that this could spawn a legion of copycat films which could turn Grandian filmmaking into a high-budget capitalist industry such as in many other countries.

Following much deliberation, the new design for the drachma note has been announced.

Image

The new note is cleaner and simpler than the last, and is made of a 100% biodegradable plastic instead of the old paper notes. As counterfeiting is not a common problem, this measure was implemented to ensure that the notes are not easily damaged by water, strain or daily wear and tear.
Colours for the notes will remain the same as the old ones, with the one drachma note being recoloured grey and the ten note coloured light brown, as the old ten note was, to many, too similar in colour to the one hundred note.

Citizens are yet to decide on the images that will adorn the new notes.

The old notes which will soon be retired from mass-production but will remain legal tender:

Kalasparata has begun to exile those who refuse to obey their new law banning the wearing of Muslim headscarves. An announcement has been made that Grandais will happily take in asylum seekers from Kalasparata fleeing this persecution.

"Although we had a similar law in place until recently, it was towards all religious symbols, whereas Kalasparata's legislation is solely prohibiting burqas and other face-covering Muslim garments, a clear act of discrimination arising from a fear of terrorism and security risk," said Anna Nadezhda, a fervent supporter of human rights.

National News

The extremist group, the Grandian Nationalists, launched an attempt to break Radimir Mitya out of prison today. Armed with rifles, they attempted to climb the walls into the compound but failed miserably. Although some escaped, five offenders have been arrested, two with moderate injury.

As of today, the new banknotes have been put into circulation. The new notes remain similar in colour and image to the old ones.

[OOC EDIT @ Kala: I think you'll find that most non-English-speaking countries will have their banknotes in the national language. The denomination in Arabic numerals should be more than enough for your use.]

Каласпарата в хаос снова
Kalasparata in chaos again

The Shimaratan parliament has been destroyed after civilians cause riots in Kalaspia-Shimarata. According to Kalashi leaders, the situation is 'total anarchy'.

"This is a mirror of events last year, when the people of Kalasparata held a revolution and destroyed their political leaders," commented political scientist Ivan Karetnikov. "There is no doubt that the Kalashi system is unstable and illegitimate."

While military action was proposed and the GpzGB issued an ultimatum, it has been put on hold after a state of emergency has been declared in the motherland.

Грандия осажден смертельный вирус воздухе
Grandais besieged by deadly airborne virus

Image

A biological weapon from Ravine Land has accidentally been unleashed, causing a swath of deaths across the world, even here in Grandais.
Image
The virus is airborne and causes the slow death of the victim followed by a parasite in its brain causing it to continue moving after death and attack others.

All ways in and out of the country have been blocked off and a travel advisory has been issued.

While the Red Army and Air Force have been mobilised, some comrades have taken up arms themselves to fight the undead threat.
Dmitry Zhukov, a self-proclaimed 'zombie hunter', asked that all who are capable head out and assist with the fight.
But experts argue that the main threat is not the undead walking, but that this airborne virus is slowly killing everyone it can. All people have been provided with breathing masks, and most civilians have been shuffled into underground nuclear fallout bunkers in cities, or taken to makeshift shelters in the frozen north.

Branimir Chehachkov, the chairman of the GpZGB, had this to say on the issue:
[...]
Grandian infantry have set up in strategic positions along roads to pick up civilians outside of safe areas and take care of any zombies - both human and animal - that might be about. Yes, the virus infects some animals as well, and whatever wildlife has not immediately succumbed to the disease is also wandering around. Although we can't say for sure that they are much more threat than usual, as many of the animals are just attacking each other and going into fits.

Nonetheless, our people are in a panic. We have little preparation for a pandemic of any sort, especially one with such terrifying consequences. For years we thought that these tales of zombies were just make-believe, but the reality is more horrifying than anyone could ever imagine. Please note: The zombies themselves are not a threat so much as everyone everywhere slowly turning into one. If this continues, we may die out before the month is over.

I urge the nations of the world to provide assistance. If we cannot destroy this threat, then we will go down in a blaze of glory.

Military action against Kalaspia-Shimarata has been called off while Grandians battle to contain the threat.

'Некроз Кризис' официально более, говорят военные чиновники
The Necrosis Crisis is officially over, military officials say

Image

After almost a month, danger from the pandemic which has been dubbed the Necrosis Crisis has officially passed. Some 30,000 people have died as a result of the virus. As the survivors filter out from bunkers or are transported home from the tundra, the streets of many cities are much quieter now.

But we could not have survived without help from our brave soldiers, civilians and support from the Nekronian military who all fought back against the living dead. We also give thanks to the many nations who banded together to help find a cure for the virus, without whom we may never have seen the end of the conflict.

Grandais must now pick up the pieces and continue on the path to recovery.
Travel in and out of the nation will recommence tomorrow, but travel advisory will remain in place until further notice.
