What if we were all christian

Postby Qubec » Mon Nov 03, 2014 9:46 pm

Ann Coulter once said, "The world would be a better and more tolerant place if everyone was christian". Do you agree with this statement why or why not?

My Opinion:

No, I believe that if christianity was never created the world would be a better place. We would not have the 1,000 years of science oppression, we woundnt have the countless religious wars. The middle east would be a peaceful area and we would not have people around the world fight for their rights such as the gay rights movement.

If everyone were Christian, we'd be killing each other for being the wrong sect. The world wouldn't be any more peaceful than it is now.

I disagree with both opinions. Numerous Christians have dedicated their lives to science and improving the lives of others and in quite a few cases, propose great scientific theories that we use today, such as the Big Bang Theory which was proposed by a Catholic priest. Most churches embrace science and believe that believing in science is integral to religious beliefs and that these don't conflict. They seek to promote science not to oppress it.

Yeah, pretty much this.

If all our problems are solved, we'll find new ones to replace them. If we can't find new ones, we'll make new ones.

I aree with this statement, however, Christians still make mistakes meaning that the world may be more peaceful, but there would still be conflict.

How about we disagree with both Ann Coulter and you?

I would gently note, however, that an absence of Christianity didn't make the Middle East a region particularly well-known for cuddling fluffy puppies and picking daisies between the rise of Sargon of Akkad in Mesopotamia and the rise of the Roman Empire to dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean; which doesn't suggest a very happy precedent for your scenario.

The fall of Roman civilisation also knocked back science, and that's as much a political issue as it is a religious/cultural one. I think there were more factors than the unexpected Spanish Inquisition leading to slowed scientific progress. And even in more devout periods, there were times like the Renaissance and Enlightenment that developed science and culture.
I STILL need a new signature.

"1000 years"?

On what premise do you base that figure?

And tell me, dear Qubec...

Where do you think western learning would be without the knowledge preserved by Christian, Islamic, and Jewish institutions in the Mediterranean world in the period c.500 - c.1500 AD?

By all means. And, when Christ returns, we all will be Christians. For now, the Christians will undergo persecution and attacks by the secularists. That's alright; it is only temporary.

Yeah, pretty much this.

If all our problems are solved, we'll find new ones to replace them. If we can't find new ones, we'll make new ones.

Really it's the eternal problem of "Us" versus "Them". Group A says a prayer this way, Group B says the prayer that way. Group A sees Group B as "Other" and eventually war ensues. It doesn't matter if the shared religion is Christianity, Islam, or Hinduism, the end result would be roughly the same.

How is it persecution if one cannot involve religion with the country when we clearly state that the country is not religious.
