Battle in Northern Virginia (Christstan Mod)

Concluded Battles
Battle of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Summer 1861 - CSA Minor Victory!
Day 1 | Battle Summary

Brief Summary: Welcome to 1861, the United States has been torn asunder and brother fights brother, father fights his son. There will be two elements to this RP. The internal faction RP and the battle threads. The goal is to create an all encompassing Civil War Era thread that captures both the battlefield and the home front. Choose a historical person/ general or invent your own, it won't affect the game. It is up to the players to determine the outcome of the war.

In this RP players will take command of an entire corps on either the side of the Union or the Confederacy or become one of the citizens on either side. The Corps is a combined arms force designed to operate independently, therefore player Corps could band together for larger battles, or operate alone. This RP will focus on battles but also paying close attention to resources and manpower on each side. My hope is to set the framework for a style of war-focused rp that could be exported to other conflicts, especially the Napoleonic. Players will be able to design their Corps from the ground up. If necessary, they may take players to be their Divisional commanders etc. Players will decide the fate of the war based on cooperation, strategic planning, and rping. The rp will use a mixture of stats and rp to determine outcomes.

How it Works:

Civilian Sign Up

Players signup as civilians of either the USA or the CSA. In G&G Civilians may be able to have a direct impact on the war itself or simply live through it.

Civilian Classes:
Politician - May rally the populace for the war and thus low war weariness and create increases in Corps Campaign Equipment levels through prudent policies [Starting wealth $5,000 - $25,000, Income of $100 - $300 per work action]
Agriculturalist/Industrialist - Begin game with farms or factories. Produce 200 Supply (Agriculturalists) or Arms (Industrialist) to sell or donate to war effort [Starting wealth $5,000 - $20,000]
Spy - May work to decrease Corps Campaign Equipment or reveal battle plans. [Starting wealth $500-3,000, Income of $50 - $150 per work action]
Journalist - May increase or decrease effects of campaigns on their side's war weariness (Note you may be a hostile journalist opposed to the war on your side) [Starting wealth $500-2,000, Income of $25 - $100 per work action]
Citizen - Generally just an ordinary person living through the war. [Starting wealth $0-1,500, Income of $5 - $50 per work action]

Civilians may take two strategic actions once every week to provide a boost to their side. Civilians may designate 2 "Civilian Skills" to help distinguish them and their role in the world.

Utilizing a point system players may generate a corps of quality, quantity, or a mixture of the two. For example, players are given 18 points to spend. Infantry brigades (3,000 men in 3 regiments) cost 1 point, Artillery/ Horse Artillery battalions (30 guns, 400 men) cost 3 points, and Cavalry brigades (3,000 horsemen) 3. Any unit may be declared as "Elite" for an additional 2 points for Union forces and 1 for Confederate. Cavalry costs so much because cavalry became organized as independent organizations and players shouldn't fall into the trap of using cavalry too much in combat. Cavalry had great strategic and operational value for scouting and harassing, but not as much tactical value. Engineering Companies may be purchased for 1 point. They can assist greatly in border & river crossings, fortifications, etc. Maximum 10 Infantry units per corps. Remember, larger forces are harder to supply. Confederates are recommended to go for quality and the Union for quantity.

Example Confederate Corps - "Jackson's First Corps"
3 Artillery Battalions (9), 3 Infantry brigades (3), 3 Elite Brigades (6)

The Battle

Battles will take place generally between two corps from each side, however given maneuvering and numbers, it could be any combination. These Corps v Corps battles will be considered "Sections" of the battle. Each "Section" will be determined by a Battle Mod. Battle Mods may be players from either side who's Corps is not part of the army engaged in the fighting. Ideally, Battle Mods will be equal Confederate and Union players. To keep the fog of war, I believe that players should TG the first half of their battle strategies post first to a Battle Mod with how they set up their forces. The Battle Mod then tells each player what information they know about the other. How much they are told depends on terrain, IC considerations, but especially Cavalry. Then each player sends their intended strategies and contingency plans for the section of the battle. Once posts and strategies are received, players may post their setup post. Then the Battle Mod using RNGs, considerations for player's strategies, and quality of player's rp post, determines an outcome, tells it to the players who may then post their rp about how the outcome happened from their point of view. The Battle Mod then updates the situation (Considered one day of fighting IC) and players may engage again if feasible to commence another day of fighting. Battle Mods must then switch what section of a battle they are moderating.

*Union Territories do not factor into contributions to either side

Theaters of War
The East (East Coast States)
The Center (Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, etc. line of states)
The West (California to Mississippi)

Generally, player corps will be placed into one of three "Theaters".

The game will revolve around trying to defend or capture key strategic points. Up to six players may band together to form an Army. Because people's schedules may change and activity may fluctuate, Who is the Army's overall commander will be decided on before a battle or permanently appointed by the OPs . NPC corps will fill in needed gaps but NPC corps will perform considerably worse than PC commanded Corps. Players will designate where their corps will begin. Once there, the players may begin to operate independently or together. If a corps go on campaign but its player does not submit orders, the corps is treated as an NPC corps for that battle.

Supplies and Arms will be two major factors in this game. At the start of a campaign, each corps is given its factions basic Corps Campaign Equipment. How much they are resupplied is dependent on the territories their side controls and from foraging/ raiding conducted on campaign. Armies may not "conquer" the other side's territories and collect supplies from it, but rather by doing so, they deny their opponents those resources. Foraging produces additional supplies (but not arms). Raiding produces a much greater amount of supplies.

The next statistic to be viewed is "War Weariness". When war weariness reaches zero that side is considered to have been defeated and the game ends. Defeats in battle, foraging, raiding, and lost territory.

Foraging by either side in a territory causes negative war weariness for the territory's owner. Raiding creates major war weariness for the territory's owner and slight war weariness for the raiding party ("The horrors of war"). Raiding also makes that territory effectively dead for a year, not providing any bonus to the territory's owner.

Each side begins with 0% War Weariness

The objective is to increase your opponent's war weariness to 100%.

At the end of a campaign, the OP board will distribute Unit Points and Commander Points. Unit Points may be used to replenish depleted units or make current units elite.

Unit Points
- Replenish depleted units at a cost of % of unit lost divided by 100. A unit at 50% casualties would therefore cost .5 Unit Points
- Elite units (Costs 1 for Confederacy and 2 for Union)
- Raise unit (same as initial costs)

Commander Points
- Every 100 points unlocks a new Commander Skill.

Supplies & Arms

It is vital to remember that an army marches on its stomach. Guns and ammo are not free. Supply lines and ammunition were of the utmost importance to the Civil War commander. There are numerous items and categories that could be considered as "supplies" and "arms". However, for ease, all supplies (food, clothing, equipment) are grouped into "supplies" and all things that soldiers fire are grouped into "arms". Depending on Strategic positions held and territories foraged or raided, each corps will be allocated a set amount of supplies and arms before every campaign, representing their side's ability to sustain war. Supplies decrease over time on a campaign depending on days in battle, territories crossed, number of units and time on campaign. Arms decrease at the end of each battle day. Supplies may only be restored while on campaign by a new corps joining the campaign, or through foraging or raiding. Arms may be replenished, however at a lower rate. Units fighting on their own territories only lose 75% of supply costs.

Foraging, raiding, and the year of the war will all decrease from the starting campaign equipment stats for each side reflecting the ravages of war.

A campaign is declared once one force begins an offensive action against the other, usually inside the attacked's territory. A campaign will end and supplies and arms restored when one side retreats from the campaign either due to casualties or lack of supplies. Once this is done, war weariness will be calculated and applied to each side. The "loser" of the campaign's side receives a larger penalty, while significant victories will actually restore some war weariness for the victor. The victor will also take control of territories captured during campaign and receive any bonuses to strategic positions captured.

General Civil War Army organization

Regiment - 1,000 Men of a single unit type (Infantry or Cavalry). The Basic formation used here. Regiments are the ones that were named "7th Kentucky Infantry Regiment" etc.

Brigade - 3,000 men of a single unit type (Infantry or Cavalry). Brigade's were not named by numerals or states. In the Union, brigades received numbers based on their place in the division "1st Brigade, 2nd Brigade, etc." There would be numerous "1st Brigades" in the Union because every division had its own numbering independent of the others. In the Confederacy, Brigades were named after their commanders "Kershaw's Brigade".

Division - Organization of multiple brigades, may also begin to use combined arms (i.e. Infantry and Artillery and/or Cavalry). In the Union divisions were named based on the places in the Corps on numbering "1st Division". In the Confederacy, Divisions were named after their commanders.

So to unite these -

Union
I. Corps
  • 1st Division
    • 1st Brigade
      • 3rd Connecticut Infantry
      • 5th New York Infantry
      • 9th Pennsylvania
    • 2nd Brigade
    • 3rd Brigade
  • 2nd Division
    • 1st Brigade
    • 2nd Brigade

Confederacy
Jame's Corps
  • McLaw's Division
    • Jame's Brigade
      • 3rd Mississippi Infantry
      • 5th South Carolina Infantry
      • 9th Georgia
    • Hanfield's Brigade

Patrick Cleburne

Age: 33
Birth State: Ireland
Description:

Patrick Cleburne

Allegiance: CSA
History: Born in Ireland, Cleburne grew up to a family of decent means. He was orphaned by the age of 15 and after failing his medical entrance exams to Trinity College in Ireland, he joined the British Army as a private soldier. Three years later he immigrated to the United States. Once in the US, he settled in Arkansas. He began doing business in the South as a pharmacist, newspaperman, and a lawyer. When the war broke out, Cleburne joined the South due to his love of his new community, not out of any love of slavery. As a prominent member of the community, Cleburne helped raise several regiments in his new home area, being first appointed Colonel, then General when he was able to help coordinate the forces in the west.

Age: 30

Class: Journalist
Starting Wealth: $100,000 (Skill+Income)
Income: $2,000 [+$180 Rental Income]
Current State: Louisiana
Civilian Skills: Wealthy, Influential
Biography: Though his family originally hailed the Bayous of Southern Louisiana, Cyril's clan was elevated from poverty by some interesting, and somewhat illegal, circumstances regarding the selling and gambling upon land investments and the land bubble that was the Indian Removal Act. Nevertheless, Cyril was born in relatively modest conditions while the family lived in New Orleans. There, his father was able to acquire a vast sum of wealth, and afforded his son Cyril, as well as his brothers and sisters, a decent education. Though by no means an extravagant one, it was where Cyril first became interested in writing. He left the family business' operations to his older brothers while he struck out on his own as a newspaper writer, essayist, novelist, and the like, with some relative acclaim regionally.
Starting Purchases:

I shall accept the position of Co-OP, though I shall be a bit more interested in playing than moderating, haha!

Commander Application is finished and ready for approval.

As for the whole rent concept, it doesn't have to be too much. Perhaps each house adds a little bit of Supply and some Income. My suggestion would be to have these rates increase exponentially as one possesses houses, say for example, a Shanty House will produce +10 Supply and +100 Income, whereas a Luxury Mansion (should someone decide to rent one out) produces +100 Supply and +1,000 Income (subject to change), and the rest of the housing denominations falling in between those numbers. I may be the only use to even use this rent system, haha.

Fantastic!!

I included the rent bonuses from houses. You can collect them once a week when you do civilian actions. People didn't really rent out luxury estates for use as far as I know. Commander app accepted! I'm going to guess H/A means Horse Artillery and that the Horse Artillery is attached to the infantry brigade or is your Horse Artillery attached to your Engineer Battalion?

Edit: We can worry about where exactly each corps is located when we get a few more apps in.

Haha, thanks. It seems we're making some waves and getting tags, so all sounds good!

Yes, H/A is Horse Artillery. It's attached to an Infantry Brigade (within the over-arching Division) while my Engineer Battalion is more of a free-floating unit that can be relied upon in either Division, depending on their placement, actions, supply, and another host of factors. Corps really doesn't matter after all, haha.

As for Rent, thanks for implementing it! It would be strange to be able to afford Luxury Rent yet not able to afford the house itself, so I see what you're getting at. It may be a rather overlooked system, but who knows, it may gain some popularity sometime.

Let's hope so. As of now I haven't implemented true engineering battalions yet so for now they will be for flavor (unless we make a unit cost for it) only the units with costs have direct battle impact. I detached all artillery from divisions and kept them at the Corps level so I could apply them in force where needed. If I had three artillery battalions like in the example, I would have done it like that with one detached artillery so that each division has their own batteries and the corps has one as well, but with me taking a minor role in the western theater so I can mod the two main ones in the center and the east, I felt I would need some cavalry for long range operations and so I could have my own scouts.

Jesus Christ, such grand strategy and micromanagement! I love it!

In all honesty, I had a leftover Infantry Brigade and decided to use it as an Engineer unit. We could have an Engineer Upgrade (cost at 1 Military Point) that is specific for the Infantry so that people can create these regiments without much hassle, and no unit can be both an Engineer and Elite - it's one or the other.

I suppose we could allow engineering unitss, although in the war the Army Corps of Engineers (at least for the union) was small. This is AH though and engineers are useful for building bridges and fortifications so I believe a 1 point engineering unit would be incredibly small, certainly not the size of a Brigade. Perhaps an Engineering company, but justify its value by arguing they can assist in border crossing, fortifications, etc. much easier.

Indeed.

Plus, all Engineers are trained as Infantrymen historically. It could work similar to how the Artillery class is set up, with some actual Engineers being present and the rest being regular infantrymen. Something like, 100 Engineers and 900 Infantrymen into an upgraded Engineer Brigade, or along that scale, could work. Gives the engineers some combat effectiveness and laborers to carry out their tasks.

so 300 engineers to 2700 infantry in a brigade, it is a fair ratio to me

ok but will it be an independent unit or a upgrade?

Plus, all Engineers are trained as Infantrymen historically. It could work similar to how the Artillery class is set up, with some actual Engineers being present and the rest being regular infantrymen. Something like, 100 Engineers and 900 Infantrymen into an upgraded Engineer Brigade, or along that scale, could work. Gives the engineers some combat effectiveness and laborers to carry out their tasks.

so 300 engineers to 2700 infantry in a brigade, it is a fair ratio to me

ok but will it be an independent unit or a upgrade?

It will be an independent unit in the future because I wanted to make any effective forces have a cost to picking them up, forcing players to tailor their Corps to their fighting styles. You can attach that unit to whatever force you like or keep them independent at the Corps level.

Yep, this is the type of "discussion" we have over here. Serious people beware, this place is filled with these things.

For now, no objections to two Corps, as long as they are in different armies. I am guessing you'd be joining my character out west?
