*waves to HEM*

To be fair, look at how much progress is being made, both in new features and ideas being discussed seriously (and coded as we develop the ideas) on this forum compared to the years under Jolt where they pretty much held progress hostage to try and force people onto NS2.

Sdaeriji wrote:Is this sort of guilt-tripping from the Moderators something I can come to expect going forward, as long as I continue to say that I prefer the Jolt forums over the new one? You're the second Moderator I've caught this crap from.

I think it's less about guilt and more the fact that (and I believe I'm speaking for all the mods here) we've had to deal with Jolt's uncooperative and outright antagonistic BS a lot more closely than a lot of players; between that and knowing for a quite some time that they've unrepentantly screwed over our rather well-liked boss.... well, we all despise Jolt with a level of intense hatred usually reserved for Bastard NS Mod from Hell stories =p

We've known for months about Max not getting paid, and several of us are probably still hoping Max decides to ream them in court. We've seen the top-secret emails (and maybe Max will decide one day to share them with the rest of you so you can see the levels of BS OMAC tried to pull.) Jolt has been steadily nibbling away at NS staff mod powers, thus making our jobs more difficult and reducing our effectiveness in keeping things ticking along for our players; starting with the infamous ban on Daistallia because he dared to express an opinion on Jolt that wasn't complimenting. I'm half tempted to head over to the Jolt mod/admin sekrit forum and fetch copies of the thread about that; it was a hard fight to get them to at least let Daistallia back on the forums with a new account.

The freedom to debate and discuss damn near anything on our forums (up to and including limited argument over moderator decisions... good luck trying to debate a Jolt staffer's ruling at all!) is something we're rather proud of; Jolt has been starting to nibble at that too, there've been a few posts to Jolt NSG that Jolt staff raised concerns over with us. With NS1 now moved to a new server, with a new forum that's gaining speed, coupled with the outright antagonistic state between NS1 staff and Jolt staff, what's going to stop them from deciding some of NSG's debates are too racy, too touchy, and so on?

So I'm sorry if any of us seem to come off as guilting anybody who still frequents the Jolt forums, it's not meant that way. We just really, really, really hate Jolt, far more than can be adequately conveyed by bold, underline, and italic text!

I think the mods should drop the Jolt forums. The Jolt people don't care about us and I like these forums much better. At least I can actually log on to these ones. Close the Jolt forums I say and see if the people there truly care about the community enough to come over here.

I played NS2 for two minutes. Literally, that's it. I didn't see any Max in there, just a lot of corporate BS.

And why is the Jolt forum still up? Copy the historic threads into their own forum area and get rid of the thing, it's making my brain bleed.

Stick it to the man! And stuff.

I read the NS2 email about this first time. A couple of days latter I see this thread and realise the implications. I prefer NS1 to 2 sure, but I, like many of us, have time/effort invested in the place, and made a effort to combine the two games through reform of my home region, a lot of reform, so this is big (potential) news. I think NS2 could be infinitely better, see this which I produced as a joke a while ago and you'll see how the basic image could have been improved(IMO), but the way I see it this change would require a shutdown; I envisaged logging in say on the 20th to see 'beta' removed and innumberal changes made. Thats the sort of thing I expected, and probably what we would get if Max run the show, but of course its a commercial venture and I should have learnt through Jennifer Government this would probably happen. I Hope Max and the five pages of posters are reading this wrong (JG world view afterall) but I suspect not.

Someone deep above mentioned the failure of multiple worlds.I'd say something in reverse; a major way of vitalising the place would be to merge worlds, bringing a larger pool of nations and cutting out some of the repetitive alliance/content, (say all the 70s into one word 70). I think the orignal design plan for multi worlds was o.k, it came apart when they realised (shock-horror) that NS1 had such a huge following (bigger than that represented by the NS1 active nations at the time) so they simple glued on some more worlds. We have had a intense debate here on NS1 about revitalisation,I'm sure some of our ideas could have been nicked, there best effort of the past 4 months was youtube, a innovative idea that many liked(not me), but how is that core to the project?(- they had plenty of users to get past beta, surely they shouldn't advertise something their current users don't like much). If they needed advertising for a niche like Max's NS, surely word of mouth, by the masses of (inactive)(therefore unimpressed) nations, was what they should have relied on (and worked to make that happen). I don't think OMAC was big enougth for NationStates, their ear for the customer (beta-testers remember!!!) was very much ###, as the all the ancient minute issues that don't require a major shutdown show. They simply didn't have enougth resources (spread thin by other projects) to get NS2 past beta, which they should have known long before hand simply by looking at NS1; 6 years in NS1 still has a considerable number of staff, and surely they planned for NS2 to have more, it was always likely to require more staff, 1. because its more complex and 2 the whole point of their investment and business plan, it was meant to be a hell of a lot more sucessful (=bigger,=more customers=solved complaints=more profit). So they have failed somewhere!!! All in all its a low point, but If they wanted I guess they can build upwards, our expectations can hardly get much lower!. So why have they sent this email? I suspect they weren't expecting to still be building the thing, 6 months after alpha, and have had a tense meeting with backers. Afterall why not have done this shutdown on Feb 1st? Its a mess, but will they clear it up?

Come on OMAC, put some effort in, and ignore the view of your bigger and more sucessful rivals over on NS1.

Don't know about guilt-tripping mods, but I liked the earlier forum type much more than this. The change made me stay away from the forums for several months, even though I missed the NSG insanity. :(

NS2 was a terrible abomination anyway. Nothing ever worked correctly and paying for flags is just plain stupid.

Of course, now they've even changed the website URL and have broken the ability to get new nations forum accounts on Jolt.

Quick question to the mods. Now that we're hosting ourselves, with out own forum, without Jolt's 'help' what becomes of your duties to the Jolt forums? Let's say shit gotta little too spicy, are you folks still obligated to moderate those forums?

Let me take a guess and say yes. They will have to moderate the Jolt forum as NS moderators, for as long as the old NS forum exists.

But why? It's no longer a NS forum per se, seeing as NS has it's own self-hosted forum. So why the responsibility?

In order to show some good faith on behalf of NS so Max actually gets paid what he's owed for NS2? Either way, it's only polite to actually moderate a forum you're in charge of.

I don't think we plan on closing them and we don't have enough control over Jolt to do it ourselves anyways, but I certainly know I don't look at them as frequently as I do here anymore.
