Airliner struck by missile, Alebcayan flights diverted around warzone

Firefighters quickly diffuse the dangerous possibility of a fuel fire on Booker Hyden's runway 27.

6 September 2014

BOOKER, Alebcay - It was only 45 minutes into budgetAir flight 1430 departing from Booker Hyden International Airport to Londsdale's Arklay Capital International Airport when passengers and crew reported a huge jolt followed by smoke entering the cabin. Eyewitnesses on the ground as well as several passengers reported seeing a missile or rocket-propelled grenade traveling from the ground before slamming into the left engine of the aircraft.

The captain of flight 1430, 54-year old Anthony Beckett with over 30 years of flying experience, immediately called for help and turned the aircraft back towards Booker. Action was taken to attempt to extinguish the growing engine fire, however, passengers, flight attendants, and ground responders all report that flames were still visibly erupting from the engine during the emergency landing at Booker Hyden International Airport just 38 minutes after the initial incident.

The aircraft was able to land without further incident with only the right engine operational. Firefighters quickly doused the left engine with foam to prevent a fuel fire. Four passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for smoke inhalation and other non-life threatening injuries.

budgetAir spokesperson Timothy Issa also said in a company statement, "We commend Captain Beckett's efforts along with those of the rest of the crew for handling an otherwise dangerous situation that could have very quickly led to a loss of life aboard the aircraft."

At the time of the incident, the aircraft was flying approximately five miles south of the Helvany-Zubrowska border in Vettarian territory. With the cooperation of the Vettarian military in the investigation, it was determined that the missile originated from the western region of Zubrowska, where tensions are currently high and Helvan forces are entering Zubrowska's western provinces. However, the data proved inconclusive about which group had actually launched the missile.

The department head of the Alebcay Aviation Authority, Thomas Sessoms, released a statement several hours after the incident, saying "Due to the nature of today's incident and the possibility of further endangerment to passengers and crew, we are thoroughly considering all of the necessary precautions to take, if any." Later, in a Directive on Airspace Control, the Authority decided that "...all flights departing, entering, or otherwise passing through Alebcayan airspace shall maintain at least 50 miles of lateral clearance from Zubrowskan airspace until further notice." Sessoms further commented that, "In this time of our neighbors' political unrest, it would be prudent to maintain some distance from an area that is unsafe to fly through with a commercial aircraft."

Details on when the diversion period ends has not been released.

New navigation system takes flight

Components of the NavWind system lift off towards their launch facility in Callaban.

6 September 2014

WYNDHAM, Alebcay - Crowds watched from the cargo terminal at Wyndham Metropolitan International Airport yesterday as an aircraft carrying the first components of a new satellite navigation system dubbed NavMesh, which is built off of the EACARS, or enhanced aircraft collision and avoidance system, to a launch facility in Callaban took off from runway 13. The components are being launched into space as part of the CubeSat initiative, a space program commissioned by the Incorporated States of Callaban. NavMesh was one of of only a handful of projects accepted for deployment through the program. Once deployed, the four units aboard will enter geosynchronous orbit and be able to provide limited assistance to aircraft within range for communications, weather, navigation, and collision avoidance information.

Scientists at the Alebcay National Aeronautics Institute in Booker developed the open-source protocol and many were excited to be present at the event. The project director spoke briefly, noting with great pride that "The beauty of the system is that it is an open protocol. This allows for us, or any other nation, to deploy units in the future that can be readily integrated with the existing system." He also noted that while the current system is only being utilized by aircraft, it is completely viable to include the technology in automobiles, marine vessels, and other vehicles. "The possibilities are amazing. While we developed this with aircraft in mind, it can easily work with cars and ships without any modification to the satellites or the protocol. In fact, all that remains is designing capable adapters to be fitted into vehicles and market adoption of the technology."

Several other notable figures were also present in the terminal. The CEO of Spirit Avionics, an Alebcay-based company that assisted in development, Vincent Merrick, was present and seemed to be in an ecstatic mood. "It's always exciting to see our work come to fruition and see use in the real world", he said as the aircraft lifted off the ground.

The technology has seen slow adoption within the airline industry, but it is expected to accelerate as the system becomes fully function. It is currently used in all Alebcay-based budgetAir aircraft, as well as in all aircraft used by Woodsteadean airline Millenium Airways and all aircraft manufactured by Globus-based Kestrel Aeronautics.

NavWind is expected to assume full operation of it's existing units by October 3rd.

Cayuga Viaduct opens to traffic

Commuters explore the new viaduct during the morning rush hour.

5 September 2014

WYNDHAM, Alebcay - The first cars zoomed down the newly built Cayuga Viaduct today at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour, although the police decided to cut them some slack. The 27.2 mile long viaduct leads through downtown Wyndham and is designed to serve as the primary business route. The new viaduct carries the highway A-250, which used to run along the nearby Centennial Boulevard. The viaduct was named after it's chief designer, Francis Cayuga, who has also designed several other prominent structures throughout the nation.

The viaduct has 24 exits, and it's westernmost end starts at the A-150 / A-250 split near Hyden and the easternmost end is at the A-50 / A-250 split. The viaduct is free to all traffic and through trucks are permitted. The speed limit for the entire viaduct is 70 miles per hour. With the new viaduct, the highway A-250 now passes slightly north of the old Centennial Boulevard, staying completely off of the campus of Wyndham Technical Community College, and instead passes by the Wyndham Coliseum. The overall route is approximately 3.2 miles longer than the older Centennial Boulevard route.

Throughout the city, many people involved in the project were ecstatic about the opening. Wyndham's mayor, Joseph Nowell, commented, "It's great to have a new thoroughfare going through our city. Traffic is a chronic problem and hopefully this viaduct will help alleviate some of it." A motorist who had a moment to comment said, "That was a pretty sweet ride. I shaved about half an hour off of my commute with the new route, so I would definitely agree that this was worth the wait."

The entire viaduct cost approximately $435 million AND to construct. In comparison, the entire construction and consequent renovations to Centennial Boulevard has totaled to $336 million AND in addition to roughly $10 million AND per year to maintain. The viaduct is designed to last for at least 30 years of safe and reliable use. Construction took approximately two years, starting in June of 2012.

Further plans to extend the viaduct route and A-250 through the Searles Valley corridor and also to Liberty Hill have since been brought to the Alebcay Department of Transportation's attention, but no decisions or further progress have been made on such propositions.

To ABC:

Greetings! Kauvers International Holdings is interested in investing in Alebcay Broadcasting Corporation as we see great potential through its various subsidiaries and a large capital injection! Kauvers International Holdings will offer an over-evaluated amount for investment into ABC for the partial ownership, and assist in expansion of your various subsidiaries. We have successfully directed many successful storefronts through our investments such as Byzantium™ Exotic Animal Products, Trelatche Computing Development, even the popular Rostislavovich Arms and Exports, and many others.

We will offer NS$100,000,000 in capital injection to the overall operations of ABC to expand your international business operations, in exchange for 15% ownership of ABC. Kauvers Holdings give our guarantee, at this juncture, that we will, at your request, willingly not infringe on your decision making in the board of directors and will not exercise our vote and instead transfer this voting power to the leadership of Alebcay BC(CEO/President, etc.). We will also not engage in corporate politics to attempt to increase our ownership in the company as we want the best for the company in the long-term. The amount can be negotiated further.

Kauvers Holdings will also offer our consulting services for other investors to your board of directors in terms of corporate expansion, for we are interested in developing creative businesses here at GE&T. Should this deal be agreed upon, we can propose for many many more partnerships between Recon Empire corporations such as the Legion Corporation, and its various subsidiaries to engage in businesses with ABC, thereby increasing publicity and overall revenue of your companies. We have the abilities to allow your business to prosper, and we seek your trust. Note: We have a finite sinking fund that deducts when we invest, so we have limited spending.

We hope that you will consider our once-in-a-lifetime generous offer, and we look forward to hearing back from you!

Warmest Regards,

Mr Benjamin Crawford
Director of Corporate Communications
Kauvers International Holdings LLC.
