Volcano erupts in Azmir
Many feared dead as province's most famous volcano erupts without warning

Last updated: 9:29 PM TCT

Image
The people of Azmir were caught by surprise this morning when one of the province's most active volcanoes erupted suddenly. Kaië Ryio'qi, always as temperamental as the god for which it is named, abruptly began spewing out ash and rock as its cone burst open, throwing a plume of smoke and pyroclastic debris several hundred feet up into the air.

Many have been presumed dead as a result of the eruption, which is also likely to severely disrupt air and sea traffic in the area for some time.

Another nearby volcano, Vekh Torsalë, had been venting smoke in recent weeks, but seismologists had not been expecting Kaië Ryio'qi to erupt, despite its colourful history.

"We never ruled out the possibility that it might go up, but we were far more confident in Torsalë," said noted vulcanologist Kaledro Rizuya of the University of Khem, speaking to the Herald. "Everyone around here remembers when Ryio'qi erupted back in '93. Well, the way this sort of thing works - rather like earthquakes - is that they slowly release pressure along a seam. Earthquakes tend to release that pressure in roughly a continuous line. With volcanoes it's a bit harder to predict, even when you have the tell-tale signs like smoke and rising levels of, say, sulphur in groundwater. Sometimes they're just false alarms."

It certainly wasn't a false alarm when Kaië Ryio'qi burst into action this morning. Many locals claimed to have seen warnings in the minutes before the volcano erupted. Pei ti'Sarna was one of them.

"Before he erupted, the Ryioi fell into himself. You could see the land sink and you knew what was happening."

ti'Sarna, a fisherman from the village of Vroi Qernin, was on his boat when the volcano erupted. Another fisherman recorded the eruption on his phone. The video has since gone viral on various internet websites. You can also watch it here.

Many have expressed concern for the people living in the area of Kaië Ryio'qi, most of whom would not have been prepared for evacuation. Local government had been told to prepare for the eruption of Vekh Torsalë, which overlooks two uninhabited valleys. The valley behind Kaië Ryio'qi is home to over three thousand people. When it lasted erupted in 1993, the lava flows destroyed two villages and killed seventy eight people. This time, experts fear it may be much worse.

"It's always been a poor area," commented local councillor Matxü Forsai. "People tend to ignore the building regulations that restrict them to the higher ground, even though the valley is a known lava corridor. The rescue teams have been wonderful so far but even they can't get at the worst-affected areas yet. The monarchy's already promised to help us rebuild, so we've got that going for us, which is nice."

Queen Iressa, whose family are the Marquises of Azmir and Khem, is reportedly travelling to the afflicted region early tomorrow to help in the relief efforts. As aid is already being flown in from all over the Empire, people in Azmir remain hopeful that their lost people will be found.

NEW LONDON AND INTEL FLIGHTS SUSPENDED

The eruption of Trellinese volcano Kaië Ryio'qi has led to the suspension of all flights departing from New London's Her Majesty's Airport and Intel International Airport on Dungeyland's western frontier, and the diversion of all flights inbound to the New London and Intel aviation zones being redirected to airports further east.

The volcano's unexpected eruption in the Trellinese region of Azmir has left an as yet unknown number dead and many more injured, not to mention unspeakable damage to the region's infrastructure. The Trellinese consort, Queen Iressa, was reportedly travelling to the region to assist in the relief efforts as this story went to press. Azmir is on Trellin's western coast, but easterly winds have brought ash and dust into the airspace of busy New London and Intel aviation zones.

"It's unlikely that flights will be able to resume this week," commented Pratik Virtue of Her Majesty's Aviation Inspectorate. "Meteorologists do not expect visibility to improve in the New London aviation zone this week, but are as yet unsure as to the status of Intel Airport. Nevertheless, passenger safety is our top priority."

ARKLAY AIRWAYS SUSPENDS FLIGHTS TO CADENZA. PASSENGERS STRANDED.
Posted : Sep 08, 2014 1:35 AM EACT | Last Updated : Sep 08, 2014 1:35AM EACT

National flag-carrier Arklay Airways has suspended all flights to and from Cadenza City Airport in Cadenza in response to the eruption of Kaië Ryio'qi in Trellin. According to reports, thick ash clouds originating from the volcano have traveled Northeast into neighboring Dungeyland and is currently barring flights from the east from reaching Cadenza.

From Neu Engollon, CEO Natasha Ashcroft has issued the following statement:

"The safety and well-being of our passengers and employees is a priority we cannot compromise. In lieu of the risks posed by the ash clouds currently affecting Trellin and its surroundings, we will be suspending service to and from Cadenza until further notice. All passengers affected by this fortuitous event shall be fully reimbursed and their flights rescheduled for a later date if their schedule allows so."

At Arklay Capital International Airport, the news has been received rather tamely with minimal passenger complaints. "I was looking forward to a much-needed holiday, but there's nothing I or the airline can do. I would rather stay here than be caught up in that cloud," says Marissa Wellington, a passenger whose flight to Cadenza today was cancelled.

In Cadenza, flight AW4056 was scheduled to depart for Arklay this morning, but was cancelled, leaving 256 passengers stranded. Representatives from Arklay Airways have assured that the stranded passengers will either be brought to Woodstead via a charted ship from Vandeviere Maritime Cruises or flown from Cadenza to Woodstead if the northern air corridor is clear. From there, the stranded passengers will be flown back to Londsdale.

Despite being stranded, many passengers have taken the incident in stride. "At least we might get a free cruise out of all this," jokes passenger Martin Nicks.

BREAKING: ERUPTION CAUSING HUNDREDS OF FLIGHT DELAYS

Image

TELORA, Aquitayne - Mount Kaië Ryio'qi, located in the Azmir region of Trellin erupted late yesterday afternoon, causing hundreds of flight cancellations.

Late yesterday afternoon, roughly around 9:29 PM TCT, Mount Kaië Ryio'qi erupted unexpectedly. Noted vulcanologist Kaledro Rizuya of the University of Khem stated, "We never ruled out the possibility that it might go up, but we were far more confident in Torsalë". The region is known throughout Astyria as one which has a particularly high amount of volcanic activity, though most of the volcanoes known in the area are dormant or haven't erupted in the last 100 years.

The eruption has displaced - and possibly killed - an unknown number of persons living in and around the volcanic area. The town of Vekh Torsalë has roughly 3,000 inhabitants, and authorities have yet to release any information on damages or injuries surrounding the eruption.

The eruption has caused travelers copious amounts of problems, as New London's Her Majesty's Airport, and Intel International Airport, both located in the Dangish Empire's western frontiers, have cancelled all flights to and from the area. Likewise, morning papers in Londsdale were labeled, "ARKLAY AIRWAYS SUSPENDS FLIGHTS TO CADENZA. PASSENGERS STRANDED".

The national flag-carrier of Londsdale issued a press release early this morning which stated that, "the safety and well-being of our passengers and employees is a priority we cannot compromise. In lieu of the risks posed by the ash clouds currently affecting Trellin and its surroundings, we will be suspending service to and from Cadenza until further notice. All passengers affected by this fortuitous event shall be fully reimbursed and their flights rescheduled for a later date if their schedule allows so."

The Aerospace Transportation Ministry (ATM) Chief, Jurgen Tilsmenhaal, released a brief press release this morning addressing the issue, in which he stated that, "all flights to and from Cadenza departing the United Kingdom have been cancelled until further notice; flights already en-route are being redirected to Dangish and Arimathean airports until safe flight can be guaranteed. Anyone wishing to cancel or change flights or destinations may do so within 48 hours for no charge."

It awaits to be seen how much this eruption will effect air travel across the region, but as of now, things aren't looking good for passengers across central Lorecia.

E14: COUNTS BEGIN
ALISTAIR LAW Election 14 Special Editor
FRIDAY 5 SEPTEMBER, 2014

300 seats were up for election this year in the new Federal Parliament (which will be housed in a disused convention centre temporarily). As well as this, the new President was also to be elected. Since May, the constitutional outline of the new federal, independent Republic of Cez-Zaeri has been conveyed in town hall debates, advertisements, documentaries, broadsheets, and in public government literature.

The Republic is now official, though many aspects of the new nation are yet to play out materialise on the long itinerary. It was always stressed that independence would play out rather unusually. The former “Woodsteasian Protectorate” (which was more constrained than the accepted perception of a protectorate) has finished its first democratic process since the referendum- forming the new federal legislature and executive; the judiciary has been kept the same.

Still, there is more to come in 2015, including the official launch of the provincial governments- Premiers will be elected as well as six new provincial legislatures. The new government at federal level will, in the meantime, largely operate as a unitary administration. Furthermore, the customary mayoral and local elections will do their annual round.

At 2 am today (5 September), the Transitional Cabinet relayed the news that all polling stations had finished the double count with district adjudicators on hand. It is planned that sometime during the day all ballot boxes will be transported, as usual, by a convoy in a secure van to a spot-check centre which will sample ten random boxes. If all boxes are confirmed later to be 100% accurate, the results will be assumed final; if there is a concern raised by an Upper Court judge that there are inaccuracies, a new sample may be issued and recounts could equally follow on until, possibly, Wednesday 10 September.
E14: RESULTS ARE IN
ALISTAIR LAW Election 14 Special Editor
SATURDAY 6 SEPTEMBER, 2014

At 8.30 pm on 6 September the CZTV Politics channel was the first to report that the official results would follow in a short while. By 8.50, a live speech by officials from the Transitional Cabinet and Upper Court announced the results.

The independent social democrat, Torgaer "Torg" Ahrejnsyn was announced as the First President of the Cez-Zaern Republic. The platform set out in his campaign was a “move forward from devolution [in a way of] embracing independence”. The meaning was explained as Torg’s strong ideas on grassroots politics, decentralisation, and support of the federalisation of the new sovereign state. Torg and his husband of 2 years, Gino, will be moving in to the residence upon completion, but will be in office on Monday 22 September 2014, where he will be inaugurated.

The SocDem party which was a few years ago the alignment of Ahrejnsyn has kept much of its support, despite unforeseen losses to Moderate Greens. However, the two parties drew with 98 seats each. The popular vote, rather than seat game was then deployed to determine a narrow win for SocDem for the first coalition party and Moderate Greens as a second. This has led to the most endorsed SocDem candidate, Afsha Khan, to become the First Prime Minister of the Cez-Zaern Republic. Miss Khan will move in to her Peacehaven residence this week and will take office on Monday 22 September, like her presidential colleague.

Conservative Alliance had a slight fall in support, still snapping up 39 seats, whilst the 5% support of the Communist Party in 2012 had diluted to 0.2%- 4% in its strongest seat. Indigo- the “no policy, all direct dialogue” party was formed very recently, but came out with 28 seats. Independents spiked up for many with 37 seats.

Political Correspondent, Karl Ingvat, for CZTV tells Upland Journal that the ‘self-labelled’ representative electoral system previously used (Alternative Vote) was still “rather majoritarian, providing [the electorate] still with the false dichotomy between red or blue pill”. For both parts of the election, the proportional and preferential factor stepped up- candidates with the lowest totals ended up with the seats, as lower numbers indicate higher preference. This did well for very new parties- one of which has come at a 50% of the governing parties-literally by seat.

Khan will be spending the next few days, with the prerogative of Presidential advice, building up the new cabinet which she states will be a quick result- possibly promising results two weeks before the deadline. We at the Upland Journal, and our Sister Publications, wish Ahrejnsyn and Khan the best to a new nation- we will also be covering the polls and more details on Tuesday.

Azmir's volcano still spewing out ash
As the main part of the eruption seems to be over, rescue efforts can begin

Last updated: 11:23 PM TCT

Image
After the catastrophic eruption of Kaië Ryio'qi yesterday, things finally seem to be settling down in Azmir's volcanic west. The mountain, which only yesterday morning exploded violently with a great plume of ash and other debris, now seems to have spent the worst part of its fury and is now content to just give out more smoke.

Initial reports of the eruption were confused and varied, with some papers misinterpreting remarks by the University of Khem's Kaledro Rizuya, who commented to the Herald that Vekh Torsalë had been considered the more likely to erupt, as meaning that Torsalë had been the one to erupt. Others have overestimated the scale of the eruption, in a few cases by several orders of magnitude. While Kaië Ryio'qi's eruption is certainly a local tragedy, we maintain that overseas sources are guilty of some degree of sensationalism when describing the international impact it is having.

Speaking to Misa Khezri, a researcher from the Cadenzan Meteorological Institute, we asked about the ash cloud which has been reported as having reached even the west coast of the Dangish Empire. "It's very possible," she told us. "Even though there hasn't been much ash in Trellin, it actually seems quite likely that it would reach New London. The speed is a bit surprising, but then you have to consider the variations in the jet stream over this part of Astyria. It roughly follows the coast, so Kaië Ryio'qi's plume would have gotten caught in it and then pulled northeast at up to one hundred and forty kilometres an hour."

According to reports, the ash cloud has largely avoided mainland Trellin, being carried over Mar'theqa at an altitude of around 30,000 feet (9 km). It began to descend again on the north side of the mountains, and has led to the cancellation of all scheduled flights from Mar'theqa, Ledigar, Bara ti'Emla, Arimathea, Ka'azar and New London, among others. Most carriers have also promised to refund their customers.

Image

False-colour satellite image of the ash cloud, 4 am this morning.

For the people in Azmir, however, things are much worse. When Kaië Ryio'qi last erupted, the lava that came out was viscous and slow-moving. Most deaths were a result of pyroclastic debris and inhalation of ash and sulphur. What would otherwise have been a rather harmless eruption this time around was drastically altered as a result of recent heavy rains in the area. The soil on the mountain's slopes turned to a thick mud which then mixed with the lava pouring out of vents on the side of the cone. The resulting lahars rushed down the slopes, at a speed of up to 50 km/h, into the valley below in an unstoppable mass that could not be outrun. Rescue efforts have been stymied by the thick layers of volcanic sludge in the valley, and as many as three hundred are currently presumed dead with nearly a thousand more missing.

Local government has praised the efforts of aid workers, coming mainly from Neu Engollon and Nikolia as well as the rest of Trellin. Rescue crew are hoping there will be no more rain, so that they will be able to save as many as they can from this awful tragedy.

FLIGHTS GROUNDED? NO WORRIES.
TRELLINESE VOLCANO ERUPTION CAUSES GROUNDED FLIGHTS ACROSS LIBETTA
Lucille Danvers | Lorecia Correspondent
UPDATED AT 2030, 07/09/2014 - AZMIR; SUBMITTED AT 0000, 08/09/2014

FlyLibetta, the Territory of Libetta's airline authority, has announced its decision in recent hours to ground flights from Libetta after the events at 9.29PM TCT (2129 LST). Shortly after the eruption was announced, FlyLibetta had all flights grounded within the territory until further notice.

Kaië Ryio'qi, a renowned Astyrian volcano was the site of a graphic eruption which ousted sight with a cloud of debris and smoke. It is feared by the international community that many people in Azmir may have been killed or seriously injured in this very sudden devastating disaster. More than 20 years ago, Libettan flights across Astyria faced a similar decision after the very same volcano reminded us of its presence as a known active site of occasional disaster. Speaking to the Libettan Volcanology Society's founding veteran, Norma Grejka, authorities had been keeping an eye on a nearby site due to its recent huffing of smoke- however, this event is said to be unexpected.

LibettAir's management have issued and apology offering emergency accommodation for anywhere possible as well as a compensation / re-scheduling programme. In addition, the Javelin Coach Company has offered complementary trips across Lorecia for those with a valid ticket in cooperation with several airlines at the three LibPort airports.

Until further notice, Javelin, LibettAir, and LibPort have a scheme for claims and will be holding meetings in following days with the FlyLibetta panel. If you need to contact the scheme, details can be found at operationcompensation.lib. The management of the three entities extended their sadness at the grave events.

The government of Libetta and Woodstead will also be working with authorities abroad in the next week to recover any information on ex-pats or relatives who could be affected by this tragedy.

President Moore released his heartfelt, and unexpectedly passionate reaction nearly 24 hours ago on his personal BubbleSphere account addressed to the people of Trellin.
"[the news] is a shocking and horrifically sad reminder that we must cherish and embrace the life we have. Life is too short to not love your neighbour, and show affection to communities in need. As many Woodsteasians and Libettans know, I support a charity or cause every month. October's chosen cause will be a recovery fund for the rebuilding of the locality".

From the Libettan Spectator, we wish the local people and the Empire the best recovery from yet another cruel display from Mother Nature.

Volcano Erupts in Trellin; Flights Affected
Monday, September 8
Story by Marcelo Aurelio Mateus

Morroseta, Morroseta : It was a normal day in the Azmir province of Trellin - until the volcano Kaië Ryio'qi erupted, spewing ash and rock into the air and disrupting flight throughout the western Astyria region. Over three hundred people in the area were killed and several hundred more were injured by lahars caused by the eruption.

Javelin Airways, Global Wings Airways, and Arklay Airways have cancelled their flights from Morroseta International Airport due to the ash cloud from the volcano drifting through the region and impacting performance of aircraft engines. All flights have been cancelled from Her Majesty's Airport in New London, an Astyrian hub for Global Wings Airways and Ceniana. Global Wings Airways services have been affected in Arimathea, Trellin, and Cadenza as airports have been closed due to the plume. Flights have been affected as far north as Libetta.

"We are disappointed that we must cancel all services to this region, but we consider the safety of our passengers paramount," said Javelin Airways spokesperson Conav Tylavee. "It is unfortunate that many people's plans are disrupted by this natural occurence, and we apologize for any inconveniences." Ceniana and its subsidiaries have pledged refunds and accommodations to at least partially make up for the cancelled flights.

The plume is not likely to reach Costa de Ouro, as the ash cloud has been drifting on northwesterly winds towards Morroseta, Sycoon, and Dungeyand. Flights from Costa de Ouro to points east of the volcano, however, are likely to be rerouted to avoid the ash plume. As the volcano has stopped erupting, air travel disruptions are not likely to continue for long, although Dangish officials predicted that their airports would not be open for another week due to the ash cloud.

The detrimental effects to aircraft performance from ash have been well documented. A famous aircraft incident took place when a 747 took in ash, causing an emergency landing. Trellinese vulcanologist Kaledro Rizuya told VVC News that the particles of ash are hard and abrasive. "These small particles can cause damage to aircraft propellers and turbines and cause engine failure due to the combination of their size and abrasiveness."

National Railway Association of Morroseta (AFNM) and Arnatxa Arimathe'ka, both affiliates of AstyRail, have said that they will extend services to make up for the effects of the plume. Maristela Mateus, spokesperson for AFNM, said that their service from Vilança to New London has been fully booked as stranded passengers are scrambling to find a way to get back to their original destinations. "We will be working as fast as possible to try and meet the demand for services between Morroseta and Dungeyland to make sure passengers get to their destinations as soon as possible." Arnatxa Arimathe'ka said in a press release that it would try to make the experience as comfortable as possible for passengers trying to arrange alternate forms of transportation.

Tourism officials in Costa de Ouro and Morroseta are more than slightly dismayed about the ash cloud impacting their operations nearing the end of the peak tourist season for busy resorts in Costa de Ouro and on the island of Santa Catarina. Both are some of Western Astyria's favorite vacation spots. Antônio Souza, head of the Avissian Union Tourism Board (CTUA), hopes that the disruption will not cost the companies he represents much money. "Obviously, this is detrimental to tourism in the Avissian Union, as people are stranded and have a bad experience here," he told VVC News. "We will have to make sure that all of the tourists remain comfortable and do not panic."

Although airlines would save on fuel costs, they would lose money by offering refunds and accommodations, said financial expert Duda Silva. He told VVC News that the tab for the eruption could run into the billions of dollars. "There's a lot of traffic in this area at this time, and this eruption will prove to be financially disastrous for the airlines."

Emotions from passengers stranded in the crisis have ranged from mild frustration to full-out anger. "Being stranded is a stressful experience," said Eliana Romão, a businesswoman in New London for a conference. "Finding a hotel room, finding other transportation, having enough clothes to wear. It's all such a big mess." Sabina Alves is a mother of 2 who was planning on going to her sister's wedding in Morroseta. "Obviously, now that's not possible because of this eruption."

Kaië Ryio'qi: the immediate aftermath
Death toll the worst of any natural disaster since 1880s

Last updated: 10:44 PM TCT

Image
It seems impossible to believe that it has barely been five days since Azmir's Kaië Ryio'qi was catapulted out of regional trivia and into the most topical and tragic news of recent months. The volcano, which spent barely 24 hours leaking lava, continued belching out smoke and ash until late last night. The great ash cloud it sent as far afield as southern Haguenau, carried by a strong jet stream, has already begun to dissipate and is no longer considered a serious threat to air traffic in most areas. The eruption only had a VEI of 3, far less than other major eruptions in the last century, even just in Trellin. So why is it that it was so catastrophic?

Professor Tizarek Crennihi, of the Medlar Seismology Centre on Kur'zhet, blames what he calls "a conspiracy of nature". Though the eruption itself was not capable of causing any serious loss of life, other factors previously unconsidered came into play to cause an exponential increase in its severity. "Really, the eruption couldn't have come at a worse time. Local soils are already loose and unconsolidated, and liable to be washed away in heavy rain like that Azmir received just over a week ago. When lava entered that mix, it became the unstoppable lahars that we saw rush into the valley."

The loss of life has been terrible. Initial reports entirely underestimated the effects the eruption was about to have, as Ghorin Rifarn, a local radio show host, recounted. "The first thing we heard was that the volcano had erupted and they thought lava flows might have killed up to fifty. A bit later they called us up and said maybe a hundred were dead. Then the rescue workers said two hundred and it just kept rising from there without end."

The final count, with the eruption apparently over, puts the death toll at eight hundred and sixty three. Eighteen more are unaccounted for but believed to have been out of the path of the lahars or debris which took so many other lives. Four hundred and fifty seven of the casualties were reported from the town of Marvisa, the streets of which are now buried under at least four metres of mud. The villages of Mret Iqoi, Orik and Txisna faced one hundred and eighty one, seventy nine and one hundred and forty six dead, respectively, leaving the latter two almost entirely depopulated. Orik was also devastated in Kaië Ryio'qi's 1993 eruption. A refugee camp has been established out of the range of any possible further eruption, and it is from here that a multinational rescue effort has been coordinated. His Majesty the King has publicly thanked those who sent aid to Azmir and offered his condolences and those of the whole Empire to the many bereaved.

E14: CABINET ANNOUNCED
ALISTAIR LAW Election 14 Special Editor
FRIDAY 12 SEPTEMBER, 2014

Today, after Torgaer Ahrejnsyn and Afsha Khan were announced as the two most visible and senior politicians in the newly independent state, the Prime Minister-to-be, Khan has informed Upland Journal and CZTV immediately of her decisions overnight.

Afsha Khan will be given the keys to the Prime Ministers' house and the Cabinet Hall whilst she joins 'Torg' at the Inauguration Ceremony. Ex-Governor Desai will be handing over the baton after serving 4 months in the ad hoc Transitional Cabinet. 300 seats were allocated across the new republic and Khan needed to weed out just a few- by convention, an affair strictly down to party politics. However, given the coalition to create the new government and Khan's vision for more individualistic MPs in Federal Parliament, the new appointments have stirred up convention.

The Transitional Cabinet outlined a new structure of ministers and their sub-ministerial departments. So who will spend the next year or so at an overpriced table in the Cabinet Hall? Read our summary below of our new people to shake a stick at for the next year, or read more below the summary to make up your mind on the crucial question- will we hate their policies, personalities, pasts, or poor styles?

Yohannes Government Breaks Down; Implications for World Economy Severe
Saturday, August 31
Story by

Wellington, Yohannes: August 31 will be forever marked in the annals of the world economy as a date the world came crashing down, for the government of Yohannes has disintegrated, and along with it, Yohannes's economic institutions, including the Bank of Yohannes and Bullion Merchants of Yohannes, the successor to Yohannesische Börse, once the world's largest stock exchange. Since many of Yohannes's institutions have a wide market presence and were widely regarded as secure, the world's banking system and stock markets have been severely impacted.

Susana Pereira, the CEO of Costa de Ouro's largest bank, BCA, has said that this is a death knell for the world banking industry. "A lot of banks, a lot of people, had invested in Yohannesian institutions. With the government's downfall, the deposits and guarantees are no longer secure and many people which relied on the stability of Yohannesian institutions have been brought down to their knees, so to speak."

Analysts hope that this second government shakeup will not impact the recovery from the recovery caused by the first Yohannesian government shakeup. "The world banking industry really learned a lesson that we shouldn't put all of our eggs in one basket," said economic advisor Duda Silva. "That's a lesson that we should have learned in basic investment class ages ago. When the Bank of Yohannes came back, the banks breathed a sigh of relief. But they apparently forgot the leson they learned when the Bank fell the first time. They re-put their eggs in one basket."

The first recession caused by the isolation of the Yohannesian banks caused thousands of job losses and instability in the world's banking industry. The effects of that recession are still felt today. Now that the Bank of Yohannes's guarantees are not backed by a financially strong and stable government, though, the recession might return, said analyst Andreia Matos. "It may even worsen to the point at which it becomes a depression."

Matos says that would be a worst case scenario, but that it is a likely outcome, considering the world's dependence on the Bank of Yohannes and Yohannesian stock exchanges. "What caused previous recessions and depressions were weaknesses in the links of stocks and banks," he remarked. "Our financial institutions and governments were too over-reliant on the Bank of Yohannes. They did not try to diversify their money supply. As a result, when the Bank of Yohannes was pulled under by the Yohannes government's downfall, our banking institutions were effected severely."

Costa de Ouro is likely to be spared from most of the effects of the banking system, at least directly, said Matos. "We didn't have a lot of money invested in the Bank of Yohannes, and our companies invested their money in a wide range of safe investments so that they would be less affected if a crisis of this magnitude were to befall them," she noted. "However, we are likely to see a major dropoff in our tourism numbers, as people and countries who did not diversify are adversely affected by this."

The downfall was predicated by protests against the Yohannesian government, decrying the exploitation of newer nations in the economic scene. "It is time for our government to stop condoning the exploitation of other nations just because we have a better economy than them," said Anahera, a protester who would only give me her first name. "It is time for our government to treat other nations with respect."

Several interest groups came out in support of the protesters, including the Yohannesian Union's Guild. "Our government is not only exploiting the poor in other countries, but also the workers here at home," said union leader Gerold Melsbach. "We stand in solidarity with those who fight to change this situation for the better."

After protesters marched on the Yohannesian capital building in Wellington, the government was forced to deploy riot police, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the crowd. This made them more frenzied, and they ultimately overran the capital building. Protesters then declared a new transitional government, and they pledged to treat other nations with respect. They said in a statement that their names would remain anonymous.

Several activists said that they supports the goals of the protestors as they related to the international sporting world. "We give too much power to the elites in the sporting world," said Liliana Eva Campos, an activist pushing for more transparency and less nationalism in international sports. "Our leaders should be less focused on gains for themselves and more focused on measures that will help the community."

PROPANE FACILITY DESTROYED IN MASSIVE FIRE.

RACCOON CITY - The Horizon Propane facility in Raccoon City went up in flames last night, causing an estimated G 34 million in property damage and the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents living near the site. According to witnesses, the five alarm fire was first spotted on the west side of the facility at 11:00 PM and quickly spread, engulfing the entire building in 30 minutes. First responders arrived at 11:10 PM and began to battle the flames; however, it was clear that the fire was not about to surrender to the foam being sprayed on it and emergency services focused on evacuating residents within a 10-block radius from the facility.

At 12:13 AM, a massive explosion completely destroyed the facility and most buildings within close range. As seen in the video above, the night sky was lit up by the intensity of the blast. Further damage to buildings as far as 8 blocks away was caused by the ensuing shockwave which shattered windows and caused unsecured bricks, mortar, and other building materials to fall onto the pavements below. The blast also knocked out power to the neighborhoods of Highburn, Westenra, Holliston, and part of the Central Business District, affecting more than 23,000 customers of Raccoon Energy.

Less than a kilometer away, the Capital Expressway - the busiest highway in the country - was closed and service on the Raccoon City Subway's Red and Green lines near the blast site were suspended.

It took a further 4 hours before firefighters were able to subdue the blaze and declare a "fire out." A total of 13 people were killed as a direct cause of the blast and a further 120 were injured. An investigation by the Provincial Public Protection Agency is being conducted to find out the cause of the fire and if there is anyone to blame.

Everything is Fine
» Costeño news outlet "scaremongering"
By Marzha Rifqi, 21/09/'14

Despite dire predictions, it's not the end of the world as we know it. Nothing seems to have materialised out of the claims made three weeks ago by Costa de Ouro's VVC News that global banking sectors were about to collapse in the wake of the fall of the Yohannesian government. In fact, the allegation that Yohannes' government and institutions had fallen in the first place was never substantiated. So why did they say it had?

"We have no idea," says Garaus Markriv of the Temir College of Economics. "Even the suggestion that the world would be dumb enough after the last recession, itself caused when the Yohannesian government suspended its international commerce, is - well, it's actually a bit offensive. Yohannes was once the focal point of world banking, but since the last international banking crisis most economies took the hint and diversified. The Cadenzan economy is a prime example of this. We have Bank of Yohannes' Astyrian headquarters here, yes, but also Les Cristaux's and Maltropia's Central Bank. No one relies solely on Yohannesian institutions any more."

We can only assume the article was run in error, but the consequences could be severe nevertheless. Numerous companies collapsed simply due to the panic when the world economy tanked last time around, and, though most companies have substantially diversified their portfolios of assets to avoid such a catastrophe again, the average account-holder in Bank of Yohannes - or any vulnerable bank - doesn't have the same reassurance. The fear of losing everything can prompt people to withdraw immediately and en masse. Even if the bank would, in fact, have been fine, the sudden withdrawal of a large chunk of its reserves can cause it to fail, bringing about the collapse people had hoped to avoid.

The rumours propagated by VVC News and other outlets are dangerous. The potential impact of the anonymously-authored piece could have costs running into the trillions of NSD if taken as fact. Here at the Lema Examiner we can only hope that it won't be.

EMERGENCY RESTRICTIONS ON RHA'GUTZA; MARKETS BUOYED

New London - Her Majesty's Government has introduced emergency restrictions on the Andamonian-occupied Trophy Ports of Rha'gutza and Khorvu, to take effect immediately. Residents of the ports have been forbidden from travelling to the Dangish Empire without permission since unrest there earlier this year, but new restrictions prevent unauthorised entry of the volatile exclaves by any person (excepting Trellinese and Andamonian nations) from the Dangish side of the border. The First Lord was noticeably distressed as he announced the measures, with many in Parliament speculating as to a hidden meanings to the decision. Markets, however, buoyed on the news, on account of the significant impact of the economic sanctions also introduced.

Share prices in Logisticate (LOG), a major shipping firm operating in the Intel Docklands, rose as the full extent of Imperial sanctions became clear. The sanctions amount, in effect, to a trade embargo on the ports, which still carry a significant amount of international cargo through the Strait of Trellin and to the world. The markets in general stood still and even rose a little on the news, which indicates a determination on the part of Her Majesty's Government to prevent any damage to the Imperial economy from the still deteriorating situation. Shares in several Andamonian firms, listed on the New London Stock Exchange, did fall, with Andamonian giant DramFreight (DRF) falling to an all time low. No Trellinese firms are currently listed on the New London Stock Exchange.

The restrictions introduced are the most severe introduced by Her Majesty's Government since those introduced against Terra Azure in February, but were introduced by an Order-in-Council with the cooperation of the Conservatives and the Dangish Unionist Party. The Co-operative Party and the Green Party were the only parties with representation in the Imperial Parliament to vote against the measures, with the Co-operatives issuing a statement urging "reconciliation and peace." New restrictions ban all travel to the Trophy Ports except with the express permission of the Crown, as well as all non-essential trade. Her Majesty's Government ignored a Conservative demand to introduce tariffs on Trophy Port goods.

The intended effect of the restrictions are to minimise the vulnerability of the Imperial economy to shocks resulting from Rha'gutza, mere minutes away from Intel's city centre. With the Trellinese Empire poised to attempt to acquire sovereignty over the Ports within the next few days, reports suggest that the Crown is concerned that any conflict may spill over into the Empire. The Dangish Empire has indicated that it expects a plebiscite to determine to whom sovereignty should belong within months, with Trellin expected to accede to this request.

CONTRUUM MINISTRY BERATED, EMBARRASSED, AND LEFT IN TIME-OUT BY HIS MAJESTY

Image
Samuel Reich delivers a strong address to the Symphonian Senate and Congress.

SYMPHONY, Symphonia Propera - His Majesty the King, Samuel Reich, delivered a drastic shift in UK policy towards Insula Fera, to an increasingly shocked and berated Symphonian Congress.

To many political analysts who often study the international and domestic relations between Aquitayne and Symphonia, this address came not as a surprise, but rather quickly. Analysts have been looking at the new Contruum Ministry, which took over the Singh Ministry after this years elections, on a nationalist front. Mr.Contruum stated in an interview right after he was elected that he firmly believed that, "It is time that we bring the fight to those who oppose us, whether it is by building a shield or a sword".

Many political analysts agree that the policies which the Contruum Ministry have been pursuing regarding the administration and conflict on Insula Fera have been forceful and almost outright imperialist. Though such concerns are usually quelled by the administration as not imperialism but rather, "returning to the Symphonia of old", there are still individuals who believe there are hidden agendas inside the Congress as to why such a large push for land has been made.

Such concerns were raised again this week, when the Contruum Ministry sent the so-called "Genevira Declaration" to the Ministry of Foreign Policy, where it was read and sent up the appropriate channels to His Majesty, whom promptly demanded a flight be leaving later that night to make good on the Ministers offer of an address to the parliament. Indeed, it caught political analysts and politicians alike by surprise at the haste and necessity that was being shown in getting the address pushed through the Congressional agenda.

Not only this, but the speech that was given was nothing that was expected from either the Contruum Ministry, the Aquitaynian Royalist Party, and even the citizens of both Aquitayne and Symphonia. While Dow Research Polls suggest that Symphonian support for the conflict in Insula Fera has dropped about 5% over the last few months, while Aquitaynian support has held relatively steady at a loss of 2.5%, an address of this magnitude and stature was not expected until much further along in the campaign.

Nevertheless, the Contruum administration's insistence on passing legislation that would allow Symphonia to effectively colonize the island was what pushed His Majesty over the edge, and advisers close to him noted that, "His Majesty was very withdrawn and secluded during the trip to Symphonia as well as the motorcade to the Diet".

Though the language of the document is still considered classified, as well as a failed Magistrate Transparency Request from our offices, sources we're close with understand that the language of the document would have allowed the United Kingdom to colonize and administrate any region of the island they saw fit, and it is due to this that His Majesty felt pressed to give the address.

The address itself, however, was a strong show by His Majesty, and one which used much of the valuable political capital he's been accumulating throughout the years. The King has been keen to allow his sister-in-law, Empress Seondok, the right to administrate her own nation just as she does him, and His Majesty built strong ties with the late Singh administration. However, as we can see, it appears the King is taking a much different stance to the new nationalist Contruum administration.

The Chamber was visibly shocked and dumbfounded as the address continued into its latter stages, as the King made expressly clear and leaving no shadow of a doubt of why he was there and what it was he was saying. Prime Minister Contruum couldn't be reached for a comment, but other Senatorial and Congressional leaders have simply refused to accept questions over the matter as they are too shocked to even begin discussing it.

Much of the legislature left the room looking beaten down, berated, or almost as if they were small children and their parent had given them a smack on the rear-end and sent them off to the corner to think about what it is they had done wrong. His Majesty made it poignant to refer to the Symphonia of old and a new Symphonia, and to which end the legislature would decide would be the course of things to come. Throughout the UK, and indeed Astyria, national leaders and analysts are scrambling to predict the ramifications of this address to the newly formed and still young Contruum administration.

The address is a complete and total reversal of the proposed Symphonian plan, and in doing so has not only ostracized himself but also the Empress' Office. Only time will tell if this political gamble pays off, to see whether the Contruum administration will seek compromise or only dig into their position further is not yet known. Akira was visibly shocked during the address, the smile he had at the beginning of the speech noticeably gone by the end.

Whether or not the King and the Symphonian Congress will come to terms with one another waits to be seen. Many analysts are predicting rough relations in the near future, but one thing is clear: His Majesty will not tolerate any future advancements on any type of annexation or colonization of any part of Insula Fera by the new administration, and though it is not clear if the Empress agrees, we can tell by Aquitaynians throughout the country who have given their input, more than the majority agree with His Majesty's statements.

The King's Speech: "Shocked and Appalled"

Symphony, Symphonia Propera
October 1, 2014 Morning Edition

As if everything couldn't get any worse for the Contruum Ministry, things took a turn when His Majesty Samuel Reich, King of Aquitayne and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, took to the dais in the center of the Union Chamber of the Imperial Diet this weekend. Speaking in veiled, but strong terms, the king essentially berated the Imperial Legislature for a few short minutes, but enough time to thoroughly humiliate many in the chamber.

The King began politely, stating that both Aquitayne and Symphonia were different in many aspects, but shared so many similarities at the same that he considered the peoples of both nations to be "a family". Extolling the work that Aquitayne and Symphonia had done in the past, the speech seemed like any other speech of approval that members of the Imperial Legislature had been looking forward to. After all, Symphonia had sent in forces to support Aquitayne's mission in Insula Fera, and the resultant United Kingdom intervention was seen as successful in containing the Herald terrorist threat. But that all changed in a matter of seconds.

"You will find nothing but war."

The King reiterated the stance of Aquitayne as to why it needed Symphonian support in the intervention. It was not only about the shared identity, but also of trust. Among all the Astyrian nations, Aquitayne had turned first to Symphonia to help end the threat of terrorism, lawlessness, and rising signs of poverty that were engulfing the former Imperial Spartanian Empire. It was this call that former Prime Minister Adaminghir Singh had repeated to the people of the AFN in his weekly Federal Address, and it was a call willingly answered by most citizens of the AFN.

But the months following the start of the intervention, public opinion has changed. According to the latest polls conducted by Latinium University, as many as 45% of the public now oppose further intervention in Insula Fera. It follows a similar trend with Dow, in which support for the conflict dropped by 5% from last month. The public cannot seem to accept the idea of military intervention being opposed by such a entrenched foe. Fighting between rebel forces and AFN military units have resulted in the deaths of 133 soldiers so far, along with another 291 wounded as AFN forces struggle to make headway into the rural and mountainous areas of Prudensia. Rebel forces, having been driven out of the lowlands, the coast, and the major cities and towns, are staging guerilla attacks on AFN forces.

The rising death toll and cost burdens were the reasons that brought down the Singh Ministry after a threat of a motion of no confidence was made public by rival factions within the Crown Democratic Party. The new prime minister, Akira vi Contruum, rose to power from elections heavily tinted by nationalism, promising that Symphonia would "take the fight to those who oppose us". Many believed that he would bring about the "second rise of the Empire", making the United Kingdom the vehicle by which Symphonia would have greater political weight in the region.

King Samuel shot down that idea, clearly reprimanding members of the Imperial Legislature that it is "not the agenda of this nation nor the United Kingdom to establish any protectorate or colony or administrative region". The king added that if Symphonia followed through with the idea of integrating Insula Fera into the United Kingdom, that it "will find nothing but war". The comments visibly shook many in Union Chamber.

Many legislators left quickly after the speech, most refusing to converse with media and reporters.

Marquis of Hitachi: "I am shocked and appalled".

In a special interview today, 9th Marquis of Hitachi, Kaoru vi Nagatsu, put down his opinion regarding the speech. He stated that he was one of the few members of the kazoku, the aristocracy, to vote against the so-called "Genevira Declaration" when it came to the Imperial Senate.

At first I was shocked. But then again, this is King Samuel we are talking about. There was nothing to be shocked about considering we had heard the same thing from his government weeks on end. Mr. Contruum had it coming to him if he had expected for Aquitayne to allow a single man to unilaterally declare UK policy. In private talks between the Imperial Senate and His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor, it was clear that the Throne was worried about reactions from other nations in Astyria if Insula Fera fell under UK control. It has twice the land area of the entire AFN combined. Of course, they're going to be outraged if this bill was passed.

However, what truly shocked the marquis was the bluntness that which King Samuel had delivered his opposition and the wide coverage of it by both domestic and international media.

King Samuel did the right thing in putting down the hopeless dreams of others. But his approach was, to put it frankly, over the top. In the world of the kazoku, it is an absolute necessity to speak in polite terms. And since all members of the Imperial Senate are from the aristocracy, I think quite a number of them are going to be offended deeply. Especially since a good number of them are going to feel that humiliation magnified by the media. Even I feel this way for my colleagues. I am shocked and appalled.

"The conseuqences will be dire."

Analysts have pointed out that King Samuel had broken several barriers in Symphonian polite society. Like what the marquis said, the king had openly condemned the direction by which the Contruum Ministry was taking the AFN, one which had emphasized confrontation with any that challenged the United Kingdom's authority and supremacy in any matter. And he had done it in full view of world media, which begs the question: what is the most likely response from the Contruum Ministry and the Imperial Legislature?

"The consequences will be dire," says Elena Rakshipur, director of Latinium University's Institute of Union Studies. The institute studies and documents the relationship between Aquitayne and Symphonia, not only from the official level, but also on the ground level as well. Mrs. Rakishipur specifically studies the way how the United Kingdom functions, and she says that King Samuel's speech will create deep tensions within the United Kingdom.

"Basically, we have here two leaders whose views are totally the opposite," she explains," Then you factor in the fact that the citizens of both our countries are deeply loyal to their own government, notwithstanding the high respect that they have for the other's. The people are expecting something to come out of the issue. It would be impossible, having gone this far, for one side to suddenly fold and the other side to think that the issue has been smoothed out. Public opinion would be up in arms."

The existence of the United Kingdom is based solely on the fact that Empress Seondeok married Prince Jacob Reich, and this was at a time when the empress had almost absolute political power and public support following victory in the Seong-Kiramashi Conflict. Mrs. Rakshipur contends that the inner workings of the UK are virtually non-existant because there is no single government to manage overall affairs, that both Aquitayne and Symphonia have operated as separate nations even with the UK as a linkage. Thus, it was only inevitable that there would come a time when the two nations would butt heads as people who differed from the empress' views entered government.

What Aquitayne and King Samuel can expect, Mrs. Rakshipur says, is for either the Contruum Ministry to force the issue by acting unilaterally or by letting the issue go, but stalling any further process of intervention via the Imperial Senate. There is no way, she says, that the Ministry would easily bend, not with the nationalist fervor it has generated in the AFN following the 2014 elections. It would break the Crown Democratic Party otherwise.

"As I said earlier," Elena finalizes, "He promised the people something. And now they're expecting it."

Could the United Kingdom be declared null and void?

"Absolutely not," she replies, "It would be unthinkable, there would be a revolution before anything of the sort happened."

It may not happen, but people are already giving support for the Ministry following the speech. Polls give preliminary numbers that Mr. Contruum's popularity rose 3% on Monday following the speech, many voters stating that the prime minister was only trying to get Symphonia a just reward for it's help in the intervention. This may embolden the Imperial Legislature and the Contruum Ministry to try again.

When the Act passed many months ago to call the Independence Referendum for Cez-Zaeri, a provincial model was presented with boundaries. Fast forward to months until 2015, when the new structure is supposed to be enacted, and yet thousands now say no. Fazal Khan investigates.

"Decentralising power is, in itself a highly supported move", says Michel Shay, Senior Sociology Lecturer at Capital University, Peacehaven C.D. Recent polls by UTlk have found that only 32% were happy, or at least not unhappy with the proposals. Shay also cites UTlk's poll on the provincial powers- not boundaries. "A clear winner is a provincial model, and yet the boundaries cause a large uproar".

UTlk, results 'surprising'.

Many arguments published in the UTlk report suggested a fear of a 'breakage of communities', 'maths over matter', and 'irrelevant'. Shay suggests that many people feel one of three things:
  • Blockades / tolls will be plotted along borders;
  • The new boundaries show little context and reasoning;
  • And, people feel let down that a separate referendum or consultation was not had about the boundaries, rather than being passed with independence.

Shay also told UCNN that 'constitutional change which comes casually should be questioned'.

In a speech, responding to UTlk's results, Prime Minister Afsha Khan explained that with results showing 'strong divisions and discontent', she would prolong the idea, and urge all Members of Parliament, irrespective of party or rank, to make sure the voices are heard.

The Prime Minister, who is the first to serve the new independent nation, says that the 'undemocratic application' of the model is 'antithetical to the image of her cabinet, and the idea of decentralisation'.

Khan, a successful city worker and campaigner for years, has talked about the very same d- word when canvassing the streets of her constituency- that was when the nation was a protectorate of Woodsteasian rule. In 1998, Khan and many other Cez-Zaerns protested during the state visit by then President of Woodstead (and thus the Cez-Zaern President), Heiden Holl. Over 3,000 were kettled to protest the regime, grabbing the attention of the world media.

'We had the virtually undemocratic zone before independence, but strike me down and vote me out if I do not bring change to this floor in 6 months', Khan remarked earlier today reflecting on the need for grass-roots activism and democracy.

Watch this space, as UCNN have pledged to list all public consultations.

TRULY UPLIFTING?
LIBETTAIR CALLS EXECUTIVES AND ADVISORY PANEL FOR TALKS OVER THE FUTURE OF THE CARRIER.

The renewed LibettAir has lost a substantial amount of money and has fallen below targets, according to Millennium Air Group, the sole owners. As the headquarters packs up with people, Djane Kaasnek explores.

LibettAir, the carrier for the protectorate was an optimistic look at revamping what was once Libettan Country Airlines, a very different airline. When the 2014 merger into Millennium Air Group, of which 25% is owned by the Woodsteasian National Government, came about with a new line for the fleet and new multiple approaches, such as single-class configuration.

LibettAir has been serving more destinations than any predecessors, like its sister, Millennium Airways, another Millennium Air Group subsidiary, whilst also starting up new partnerships. However, the volume of the flights was 'grossly overestimated', according to analyst, Manali Kanji; no official figures on to what extent were given, but the news overnight has caused uncertainty.

Dr. Marshall Okereke, the Government Regulator for the parent company sat with me today after the emergency conference to discuss some alternatives and possible problems. Okereke, by Woodsteasian statute, must be consulted on policy changes, legal and financial developments, and disputes in the board, as a non-Parliamentary director and fortnightly speaker at the National Aviation Bureau (Woodstead) and Fly Libetta (Libetta).

"Firstly one problem we found was brand recognition; as Astyrians have it, we know LibettAir, and we know the political relations between Woodstead and Libetta. However, if you march out to many regions- especially those with thriving entities, they will not know the relations between the countries, and will not know the airline."

"There have been talks over merging the sister airlines together into a larger Millennium Airways through the next few months", Okereke tells us, suggesting that brand recognition is one crucial factor to the success. "Millennium Airways is known, and so is Woodstead".

Final talks will be resuming through the week, and management indicate they may have answers, at least for executives, employees, partners, and suppliers, if changes do occur. Aoife Beckett, Managing Director of Millennium Airways, told us last week at a press conference that the new airline image will be pushing forward the established ideal of inclusive, single-class, away from economy and luxury.

EAF GROWS AGAIN
ERLENIC ALLIED FORCES HAS EXISTED IN SOME FORM FOR 300 YEARS, BUT TODAY UNVEILS A NEW PROJECT.

The Erlenic Allied Forces have served Beinai, Osterra, Libetta, Woodstead, and their protectorates for over 300 years now, and has always been a small affair of a reserve defence force. Newly independent Cez-Zaeri is still yet to vote (as a past member by default) on whether they join, which should be an executive referendum in November. So, why are EAF splashing out this year, and how? Florian Brown investigates.

INGRIVALD, Beinai. In a packed conference room, not far from the headquarters of EAF, the military body which unites national forces, politicians were at podiums to announce their plans to make a rather radical expansion, just days after a facelift to the 301 year old alliance was announced.

Presidents Guy Moore of Woodstead and the Libettan Territory, Eingold Karlsson of Beinai, Kylie Jean-Baptiste of Osterra were at the front of the Assent Panel. Acting Presiding Officers for the new Confederation of Nyasott (Oceanport, Leuthania, Cobustine) were also attending to give assent. Newly-elected President of the Cez-Zaern Republic, Torgaer Ahrejnsyn, was an observing member.

The public media conference also included a question and answer session with the new Chairperson, Lola Lundegaart, and her Cabinet. Lundegaart was 'proud to pioneer the new adventure' into a new coastguard group, EAF COASTAL. EAF COASTAL will be drafting a quota of 25% of each constituent member, though the Prime Minister Afsha Khan of Cez-Zaeri has suggested that their possible contribution could only be agreed on a smaller quota.

Speaking on behalf of Khan, Ahrejnsyn tells the audience:
"As President of the new Cez-Zaern Republic, myself and the Prime Minister will be administering a referendum on November 3rd. This will define whether I remain observer or signatory; my differences with the Prime Minister on the subject of EAF is a small matter, but we will push politics aside for public consent before a debate comes."

Khan has been known for what Ahrejnsyn used to call the 'break glass in case of emergency' approach. In 2008, Khan led the Veterans March for better pay for draftees from a national defence reserve to the 'bigger system' of EAF- so far EAF draftees will get no more benefits than being a Cez-Zaern Armed Forces member.

On top of the new unit which will see 7,000 personnel from Woodstead and Libetta, EAF is planning a research task into whether constituent nations need a referendum to consent the effort; in which EAF will only present and draft if all constituents give unanimous consent. This is a move made popular by successive Foreign and Home Ministers across all jurisdictions.

Oscar Quay, the Prime Minister of Woodstead, President Guy Moore of Woodstead and Libetta, Afsha Khan of CZ, and Uva Kane, Presiding Officer of Leuthania (Nyasott) are all open supporters of that reform. In 2014's Budget Review in Woodstead, an extra 4% was also forfeited into the funding of the EAF.

When asked by UCNN why, the Woodsteasian delegate for the EAF cabinet told us.
"Look at where Libetta is on the map, and you shall find it obvious if you are even interested in Astyrian affairs- something the EAF feels is most important. EAF would be better than just National Defence Force troops across Libetta and the local bureaux of policing taking a stand against what is for now, at least, a foreshadowed event.

The question should not be why we are funding more EAF activity, but about what is happening to the climate of Astyrian Affairs. Insula Fera, Glislandia, Yellow Star Republic; if one cannot produce an answer from just those three locations, one should be ignoring the question you asked, and read all about it first."

Xander Walters, Chair until September, had an interview with the Ingrivald Times (recorded also in the Upland Journal) to urge the new Cez-Zaern Republic to join, speculating that 'new nations create new targets; victims with the wrong supplies'.

The Taxpayers Alliance in Woodstead teamed up with Kill War Coalition in July 2014 to pretest the funding of EAF, but taxpayers in Libetta are seemingly content, according to an August article in The Libettan Spectator on the worries of the YSR. Either way, EAF will be growing this year and modernising the technology in a multi-billion dollar scheme or renewal. Knowing now what the EAF executives and their friends in the capitals feel, is the feeling towards EAF better or worse? Are we verging on a new venture to protect Libetta and possibly Cez-Zaeri?

SOCIALISTS WIN MAJORITY IN EPSOM

Image

GENT, EPSOM - The Socialist Party has won a decisive victory in the Epsom parliamentary elections, securing 139 seats in the 229 member parliament, thus granting it the right to form the first Socialist majority government in the history of the Empire. Jane Galbreith, the outgoing Liberal Prime Minister, has offered her resignation to the Governor-General of Epsom, who is expected to invite the Socialist leader, Alex Hill, to form a government in the indebted dominion of the Empire. The Liberals won just 24% of the popular vote, compared with 43% in the previous elections in 2009, whilst the separatist Epsom National Party also suffered, seeing its share of the vote fall to just 4%.

Socialist campaigners all across the dominion were overjoyed with the results. Winning 47% of the popular vote, the party secured a majority of 25 seats, significantly exceeding expectations. Most campaigners were only expecting the Socialists to win a plurality of seats, or at least a majority so slim that effective governing would be impossible. With Socialist joy came Liberal disappointment: the Liberals lost almost 50 seats, including the high profile seat of the outgoing Education Secretary, Nathan Swarm. The Conservatives were also disappointed, even if they had already resigned themselves to becoming the third party in Epsom. The Dangish Unionists actually gained 2 seats since the 2009 elections, but still managed to finish squarely behind the Co-operatives. The Green Party does not contest elections in Epsom.

The Socialists campaigned on a platform of eliminating economic inequality, which they claim has been a growing problem under the "neoliberal" consensus between LibConDUP - a portmanteau used to refer to the traditional ruling parties of the LIberals, the Conservatives and the Dangish Unionists. The flagship policy of a rise in the upper rate of income tax to 65% has been polarising; it has been widely criticised by economists across the Empire and the world, but is adored by Socialist supporters. Their charismatic leader Alex Hill has led the Socialist Party from being a dogmatic, extremist political party to one which is dominating the political scene in Epsom. Indeed, sources suggest that the Imperial Socialist Committee is to encourage Mr. Hill to resign the Premiership in order to lead a campaign for the Imperial elections in 2015.

The outgoing Epsom government had been met with widespread public discontent over its plan to become the first Imperial dominion to introduce tuition fees for public universities. The plans, masterminded by Jane Galbreith, would involve able students paying up to £4,500 ($15,750) per term to attend universities across the Dangish Empire. The plan, due to be implemented for the 2016-17 academic year, have been put on hold by the Socialists. Other problems faced by Mr. Hill include a slowing economy, a budget deficit which infuriates the Imperial government in New London, and the continued implementation of universal health provision throughout the dominion.

As only the second Socialist to hold the office of Prime Minister in any dominion, markets were understandably queasy about the prospects of a Socialist victory. Shares in PayPlus (PAYP), the financial services corporation based in Gent, fell by 2.43% on receipt of the news. Investors are worried that the Socialist government will be "anti-business," although Mr. Hill has claimed that his administration would stand for equity, not for "unwarranted fear of the firm." As the Times wrote yesterday, firms should not fear a Socialist government which, despite its nay-saying, is fundamentally committed to the economic status quo.
Classical liberal.
  • My nation is called the Dangish Empire, officially
  • The population is circa 500 million
  • It is an imperial federation
  • The term Dungeyland while only technically referring to one colony can be used for the entire Empire (think Holland)
  • The Dangish Empire is a constitutional monarchy, our monarch is Queen Ellen I
