Maple Leaf Bowl III

Welcome to the 3rd edition of the the Maple Leaf Bowl, hosted by The Holy Republic of Estope. Estope is a relatively small, nation located in Esportiva. Sports are a huge deal in Estope as almost everyone either plays a sport or actively follows Estope's national teams. Baseball, Tennis, and Soccer are the major sports in Estope, but American Football is also a very popular sport. The nation's desire for football has greatly increased following the immensely successful hosting of the World Bowl. This led leaders to search for yet another football tournament to host. With most of the work already in place from the World Bowl, there will be an easy transition into hosting the Maple Leaf Bowl.

Outside of Sports, Estope is a very conservative and religious nation. Almost the entire population is Catholic, which is the national religion. There are still some other Christians and even non-Christians, although they do have to pay a larger tax. That being said people are still very free and so foreigners will not have to worry about any ridiculous laws. Most laws are based off of the Ten Commandments so as long as those are followed there shouldn't be any trouble. There are very few restrictions on guns and many people carry concealed weapons, although they will not be allowed in the stadiums except by security guards. There is very little crime in Estope so any visitors will be safe. Twin Brooks, is the capital of Estope and the largest city. It is pretty much the center of everything in Estope. The city is very clean and there are many options for hotels, dining, and entertainment. Eldora is the second largest city and a very modern city. There are plenty of options for hotels and dining, but it is very expensive. Fort Moore is a mostly military town and does not have all the many options for staying. It is relatively cheap to stay at. Port Falls is a a coastal city with beautiful beaches and is very touristy. This Map should help get a feel for the locations of all the cities. They are all close enough to drive from town to town without having to go more than 5 or 6 hours.

Notes

King Petrus XX is an athletic QB who is known to scramble frequently (and the current King of Saintland). During World Bowl XX, he famously suffered a serious injury suffered at the hooves of the Equestrian States, but he returned during World Bowl XXI as good as ever and was especially dominant during World Bowls XXII and XXIII. Tuccius is a power RB and Maximius is a speed back. Loreius is a great pass catcher, but lacks elite power or elite speed. Ancharius is a large fullback who moves pretty well and can make some plays. Matius is a pure blocking fullback. Matthaeus and Thomas Favonius are twins and Paulus Favonius is their younger brother. Ioannes Lusius is a deep threat and all-around dominant WR. Herius is more of a possession WR. Epidius is a relatively tall WR. Thomas Lusius is the younger brother of Ioannes. He is a speed WR who is drop-prone. All of the defensive linemen are big players that would be defensive tackles in a 4-3. Oranius is a balanced WR. Georgius Didius is an elite pass rusher. His brother Silvester is more of a coverage OLB. The Stlaccius brothers are known for their hard hits. The defense is extremely aggressive and tends to show alot of different looks. They use movement to throw the opposition off guard. Offensively, Saintland tends to have a very explosive offense that can score in many different ways. They can go no huddle or use a huddle. They can go option and they can go run and shoot. Saintland will run trick plays and they will call unexpected plays. King Petrus XX calls the offensive signals and Georgius Didius calls defensive signals. If Didius is knocked out of a game, Publicius would become the defensive signalcaller. This event is being held under the same rules as Saintland's domestic league uses. Saintland is one of the dominant forces in international gridiron at the moment. The National Team won Arena Bowl IV, both previous editions of the Maple Leaf Bowl and finished second at World Bowl XXIII. However, with their best players split between 2 teams at the King Paulus XV Memorial Games, the Arena Gridiron Team (captained by King Petrus XX) won the Gold Medal while the Saintland Rules team (captained by Andreas Polus) was forced to settle for a Bronze. After the embarrassing failure of the Saintland Rules Team to win Gold at the King Paulus XV Memorial Games, King Petrus XX decided to place himself on the Saintland Rules Team, for the first time.

Nassau Eagles General Football

Foreword:

A great debate has arisen within the duchy of Nassau, home of the Hessen. Soon after the ecstatic response of the public to the Eagles' debut entry into the Third Maple Leaf Bowl, much chaos and unrest ensued. Due to the nations previous experience in the field of gridiron football, there has been debate over if that World Bowl squad should act as team for football in general (including this new foreign form) or if there should be multiple teams acting as a representative for every different spectrum of football (excluding association, of course). There has been much unrest, and tensions between both sides have escalated, a few riots have even taken place. Finally, despite much discontent from the players, the two sides agreed that a general team was acceptable only if intensive training was given to the players in order to adapt to each subdivision. And so, with a few position changes from the last World Bowl, the Nassauite representatives (although still deciding which players will take this subdivisions' unique positions) are ready to give it their all. Breaking the long silence of the Hessen in the multiverse, we present to you the roster of the Nassau Eagles.

Kriegiersien Image Football National Team.

It is all about the experience. After many problems to assemble the exact squad that had played the edition before, again beaten by archnemesis Saintland and ending in the Quarterfinals, the agent of Kriegiersien finaly had found every player, some in retirement homes.

This time it has to be the title.

"These young Brits in the preliminaries are no match for us", said Coach Shatner, chewing bubble gum at the Press Conference.
"I think we will have some fun here", added Quaterback Jay Simpson while drinking a local beer.

All in all, the mood seems to be relaxed.

The Actuno team favors the defensive side of the ball more than the offensive. They run a 4-3 scheme with veteran Kenzie Evans providing leadership and experience while explosive safety Baxter Wadsworth is always a threat to take an opposing receiver out of the game with his humongous hits. On offense the Actuno are a classic run first, ground-and-pound offense that takes advantage of the incredible talent of Kyrie Golden. His speed, power and cuts leave defenders in the turf.

Maple Leaf Bowl III - Preview

(SP) The international championship of Saintland Rules Gridiron has returned once again. For the first time ever, King Petrus XX will lead the reigning, defending and only Maple Leaf Bowl champions ever into Estope. The last time he was in Estope, King Petrus XX led the National Gridiron Team to a narrow defeat against the Allamunnic States in the World Bowl Championship Game. Now, he takes over the Saintland Rules team, which is coming off of a disgraceful Bronze Medal performance at the King Paulus XV Memorial Games under the captaincy of Andreas Polus, the nephew of Sister Maria Polus, the internationally known celebrity who now resides in Acedonia. King Petrus XX intends to avoid the mistakes that Polus made. "I have long wanted to compete in a Maple Leaf Bowl, but was unable to compete in either of the first 2 editions due to circumstances beyond my control. In the first case, I was still recovering from an injury inflicted upon me by a talking horse. In the second case, I was dealing with the chaos caused by the events in Republica earlier this year. Now that I am finally participating in the Maple Leaf Bowl, I look forward to participating and expect to keep the trophy in the Kingdom." - King Petrus XX

Once again, 16 teams are participating in the Maple Leaf Bowl. The format is exactly the same as the previous edition. 4 groups of 4, double round-robin, top 2 in each group advance to the Quarterfinals and single elimination from there until a champion is determined. Our own National Team was drawn into Group A.

Our first opponent will be Shemiki, a newcomer to international sports who has never, to our knowledge, competed at the international level before. Second on our list of opponents is one that we know very well. That is, of course, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Hosts of the first Maple Leaf Bowl and of the last 2 Baptisms of Iron, they are another of the leading gridiron nations. They were champions of the 12th Baptism of Iron, but an asterisk must be placed next to that since they were, in fact, competing in their second BoI, due to a mistake on the part of the WBA. In the last Arena Bowl, Quebec fell to the Saintland National Team in the quarterfinals. However, they won a critical game in World Bowl XXI's second group stage after Philippus Francus missed a last second field goal. This denied the National Gridiron Team a spot in the quarterfinals of that World Bowl. Surprisingly, the paths of our respective National Teams did not cross in World Bowl XXII or XXIII, nor in either of the previous Maple Leaf Bowls. However, in the most recent season of NSCF, the University of St. Augustinus was drawn into the same conference with the Quebecois universities and got the better of them. Now, 2 more chapters will be written in our, relatively friendly, rivalry.

The 3rd and final opponent for us is Miley World. They competed in BoI X and World Bowl XVI, going 4-0 in the BoI group stage, but faltering in the quarterfinals. Then, in their only World Bowl (thus far), they won 6 games, lost 5 and drew 1 to finish a respectable third in their group. Then, they did not return for any of the following 7 World Bowls. However, they recently rematerialized at the King Paulus XV Memorial Games, where they went 2-2 in Arena Gridiron and finished 3rd in their group.

Based on past performance, Group A is undoubtedly the strongest group, by far, on paper. However, the other groups contain their share of newcomers, up and comers and teams returning from a long hiatus. Games are not played on paper, so King Petrus XX and the rest of the National Team must be ready for the Maple Leaf Bowl. If he even thinks about taking some of these games for granted, he needs to remember how the National Team was nearly eliminated in the group stage last time. The King will be looking to avoid a repeat of that. If the King does, indeed, make it look easy as he holds onto our Maple Leaf Bowl title, that will only be because he isn't expecting an easy path to a three-peat.

Monday July 14th (First Day of Play in the Maple Leaf Bowl):
"Uh, John."
"What is it?"
"Well I was just looking over this letter here congratulating us on winning the host bid for the Maple Leaf Bowl and it says here that this is Canadian Football, not American."
"Is there a difference?"
"Yep, and a pretty big one at that. The fields aren't even the same. Theirs are 110 yards long, not 100, and they have 20 yard deep end zones. The width is all different too. Plus the field goal post is on the goal line, not the back of the end zone."
"That's not good. There's only a few hours left before the teams arrive at the stadiums to play their games. Get me each location director on the phone now! We have to fix this fast!"
"What about the referees?"
"American Football refs will have to do for now. We don't have any other ones. What we can do about that is give them all a crash course on Canadian Football before we send them out there and then ask all the nations if they could send some of their officials for future games."
"I've got JP United Park on the line. They have a major problem. Their field cannot expand much more. There's just not enough room."
"Ok tell them just to redo the lines at like 8 yard increments so it looks like it is right."
"Smithfield Dome is having the same problem. Should I tell them the same thing?"
"Yep. Hopefully we can just get by this first day without too much trouble and then fix it all later. How could we have overlooked something so important?"

Miley World lose 32-28 to Royal Kingdom of Québec in Moose football

There is a tournament that not many people cares about being played in Estope, the Maple Leaf Bowl, and no they aren't playing normal footall, they're playing Moose Football or Saintland Rules Football or whatever it's called. This kind of football was brough to the city of Moose Jaw, Tennessee, Miley World by someone who was exiled in Saintland and came back to Moose Jaw 10 years later and they have some weird rules that no one understands. So Miley World loses 32-28.

The game was played at west Memorial Stadium in Fort Moore, Estope and there was some confusion at the start of the game when Miley World brought 12 players on the field and Québec only had 11 but the game finally started. Miley World received the ball first and they scored on the 1st drive when Sean Taylor caugh Alan Miller's 38 yards pass in the end zone. Québec also scored on their 1st drive when Megatron passed to Niga Higa Drouin in the end zone for 17 yards. With 2:31 left in the 1st quarter, Megatron passed to Raymond-Ruth Nguyen for 26 yards and Québec was leading 14-7 after 1 quarter. Midway in the 2nd quarter, Québec's kicker, which is Megatron, tried a 52 yards field goal but it was short. Hakeem Bradshaw caught the ball in the end zone and ran to the other end for a touchdown, the game was tied 14-14.

Québec received the ball at the start of the 3rd quarter and scored on their 1st drive when Faheed 'T-Pan' Magnitogorska ran to the end zone for 3 yards. Québec tried a 27 yards field goal with 5:11 remaining in the 3rd quarter and the kick was good, the royal québécois were leading 24-14. With 1:23 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Alan Miller passed to Colt Dunlap for 21 yards and it was a touchdown, the score was 24-21 for Québec at the end of the 3rd.

With 13:48 remaining in the 4th quarter, Miley World stopped Québec's offense and they had to punt. Québec tried to punt inside the 20 but they kicked too far and the ball went in the end zone. There was some confusion after that play, whether Québec deserves a point or not. After a 10 minutes deliberation, the referrees finally awarded Québec a point and the score was 25-21 for Québec. Miley World followed with a 24 yrds touchdown when Alan Miller passed the ball to Cédric Babin in the endzone. The score was 28-25 for Miley World. With 24 seconds remaining Québec was stopped at the 27 yards line and had to either go on a 3rd and 10 or try a field goal. They tried the field goal and the kick was good! But Miley World got a 15 yards penalty for roughing the kicker and it's an automatic first down for Québec. So the score remains at 28-25 for Miley World. The ball was placed at the 14 yards line. On the 1st and 10, Megatron tried to pass to Raymond-Ruth Nguyen but the ball was tipped by Justin Cole. On a 2nd and 10 with 17 seconds remaining, Megatron passed to David 'Lil Wayne' Cloutier and the ball was caught in the end zone, extra point was good and Québec were leading 32-28. Miley World had 12 seconds to score a touchdown but failed and Québec won 32-28.

Next game

Miley World's next game is against Shemiki at the Freeport Field in Twin Brooks. Shemiki lost 39-2 against Saintland and their two points against saintland are punts that went in the end zone.

Estenia Destroys New Wolfopolis

Estenia destroyed New Wolfopolis on the Opener of the Maple Leaf Bowl III with the score of 75-7. This was the opener of a long and successful career for our players and for our team. Our team's debut in Gridiron Football Leagues was always successful, as we have a long and good tradition against Gridiron teams. We easily won New Wolfopolis when we found their weak spot. and from 0-7 we turned it to 75-7. Let's see the other game of our group as we saw a sure result with the loss of Jeckland and the win of Camerania with the score of 35-33. Let's see group A now. The unbeated Champion Saintland won Shemiki with 39-2 and it's first, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec won Miley World with the score of 28-32. Group C now. Kriegiersien won Britonesia with 48-14 while Londinium Monarchs won Murbley Mighty Chillers. Group D now. Actuno won the unorganised Jachaelter with 28-25 and Nassau-Hessen won Estope with 38-33.

"Hello, and welcome to CSN, I'm Kara Lundgren, you gridiron correspondent. Last night, our gridiron debut went off pretty much without a hitch, as we soured to victory in our first game of the Maple Leaf Bowl! It was a glorious win, with both sides bringing all they had on the field. We were able to repeatedly turn the tide back in our favor, most notably gaining the lead in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. Today, we play Estenia, who look to have a pretty good team at this tournament. Well cone to you later with more results, but until then, stay rowdy!"

A day after throwing for 3 touchdowns and rushing for 2 more to lead the Saintland National Gridiron Team to a dominant victory over Shemiki, King Petrus XX published an article in the Saintland Press regarding the National Soccer Team's World Cup group. The King made a number of demands that he did not expect to be accepted, as a response to the situation involving their being drawn in the same World Cup qualifying group as Gregoryisgodistan. His intent was to withdraw the National Soccer Team from the World Cup, in the name of safety.

As the King did not bother to consult his younger brother before making this statement, he did not realize the feelings of Prince Andreas on the matter. However, while the King was laying out the gameplan for the game against Quebec, his SaintPhone suddenly began ringing. He looked at the ID and discovered that it was his brother Andreas on the line. He answered immediately.

King Petrus XX - Hello, Andreas. Is something wrong?

He had decided to leave his 3 adult brothers in charge of the Kingdom for the time being, with instructions to call him immediately if anything serious happened.

Prince Andreas - Everything's fine in the Kingdom. Well, unless you count a routine arrest of a visitor for wearing indecent clothing in public.

King Petrus XX - Why, then, did you call me?

Prince Andreas - Because you never talked to me before sending that article into the SP. I have no desire to withdraw from the World Cup, even if we have to play the crazy man's Foot Slaves.

King Petrus XX - But, it isn't safe.

Prince Andreas - I know. You can't really expect me to visit their country? They'll kill me the moment I set foot there.

King Petrus XX - Then, what do you intend to do?

Prince Andreas - If we pull out, Feministvs Sanctvsterra will take our spot. Besides, we can forfeit the away game and still qualify easily. I guarantee it.

King Petrus XX - Fine, I'll let you play them somewhere. I'll make a call to Holy Party headquarters in the Free Republics and see if they can arrange a stadium for our home game against them and fill it, as much as possible, with members of the True Church.

Prince Andreas - So, we play them in the Free Republics before our Republican brothers and sisters in Christus? That would definitely be acceptable.

King Petrus XX - But, I'm not going to pull the threat of withdrawal off the table until it is absolutely clear that we're not going to be able to get a better deal.

Once they had an idea of where they wanted to go, King Petrus ended the call and returned to preparations for his team's upcoming game against Quebec. This would be a pivotal matchup, as the winner would have sole possession of first place in the group. He remembered the last time these nations had met on the gridiron. Maybe it would be a good idea to have Francus attempt a few more practice kicks in pregame warm-ups than usual, the Sanctii King thought...

The Londinium Monarchs put on a show last night as they beat the Murbley Mighty Chillers 65-17 in their inaugural Maple Bowl match. Harvey Wilson picked off three interceptions and ran one back for a touchdown to seal a fine victory, the third interception coming with little more than two minutes left on the clock. Monarch quarterback Stan Gelbaugh also enjoyed a fine game with a 23-of-31 for a 252 yard passing performance, while running back Jeff Alexander ran the ball twelve times for 136 yards.

The Monarchs' hardcore fan group, dubbed the Royal Army, were in full voice at last night's game. Many times, this forced the Mighty Chillers' offense into timeclock violations as the sheer volume of crowd noise disrupted offensive audibles.

National Nightly News, Actuno

"What a heartwarming story! Thanks, Sharon. Now, onto sports." The news anchor delivered these lines with practiced enthusiasm as the camera panned from the view of herself and her partner at the main news desk to the sports newscaster to her left. His name was Biff Jenkins and had reached celebrity status in Actuno for his stellar career in hockey. He had retired from the game, but moved on to television to keep involved. The large screen to his right showed the logo of the NNN, but changed to scenes from the Maple Leaf Bowl as he began to speak.

"An absolute thriller at the Smithfield Dome in Estope earlier today, as I'm sure many are aware. It was our own gridiron football team the Warlocks playing in our country's first game in the honored Maple Leaf Bowl. Their opponents were Jachaelter, one of the other teams in Group D. Many were skeptical of coach Jed Westfield and his strong belief in a defense-first team, but they pulled out the close victory 28 - 25."

The screen jumped from a shot of the coaching staff of the Warlocks to the beginning of a play in the first quarter. "Tim Brody throws a touchdown pass to Jack Sands as he cuts across the middle of the field. Sands has been impressive coming off of the slot position for years and it doesn't look like he's going away any time soon." After showing the play, the feed skipped again to a shot in the second quarter of running back Kyrie Golden spinning out of the clutches of a defender.

"Golden was explosive in this game, ending with over 110 yards and a touchdown to boot. The hero of the game, however," here Jenkins paused, smiling widely at the camera, "Baxter Wadsworth. It was late in the game and Actuno was up three. Jachaelter was driving, and they were just behind their own 40 yard line. Their QB Hunter threw a bomb deep down the field and number 16 Glijj caught the ball on the run. A bad situation for Warlocks fans, until..."

The camera cut from Jenkins and the screen to just a shot of the replay. It showed the opposing receiver catching the ball and continuing to run. From the top of the screen runs in number 69 of the Actuno squad. The scene goes into slow motion as the receiver tries to evade the tackle. Wadsworth sees through it and throws a huge hit into his torso. The ball pops into the air as the two players smash to the ground. A corner from Actuno, Scott, pounces on the ball and secures victory for the Warlocks.

"There you have it folks. With a solid offensive game and some stellar plays by the secondary we are successfully undefeated in the Maple Leaf Bowl. Let's keep it that way, Warlocks! Goodnight." The lights on the stage slowly faded as the camera zoomed out, until the entire stage was dark.

"Well it appears that no one really noticed our disorganization so far."
"Either that or they just didn't care. The Ultra Bank Field crew I have my suspicions about. Estenia 75, New Wolfopolis 7 and Londinium Monarchs 65, Murbley Mighty Chillers 17. Neither one of those scores sound right."
"Well that was because both teams that won in a blow out were on the home sideline. Whenever there was a question about the rules the head referee would ask their coach."
"Ahh, that makes sense. And nobody at JP United Park or the Smithfield Dome noticed the shorter fields?"
"Apparently not. There was a lot of controversy though when the referees at Freeport Field and West Memorial Stadium as to the number of players allowed on the field. In fact for the half of the first game The Royal Kingdom of Quebec played with only 11 players."

Estenia wins Camerania and does the Gridiron Surprise, again

Estenian National Canadian Football Team won Camerania with 19-38 on an away match that left millions of Estenians and foreigners with the mouth open. Our players were dominating in the pitch in the last 2 periods mostly where they did all the excellent performance. Our players found the weak spot of Camerania on the last 2 minutes of the 3rd period, and they started doing all the attacks to this area. Let's see the undefeated Saintland. Saintland won The Royal Kingdom of Quebec with 34-24 and they remained first on their group. Let's see a very good team now, Kriegiersien who won Londinium Monarchs with 33-30. As we've seen in the previous 2 tournaments Texacano was participating and it's the big loss of tournament.

Good evening, I'm Kara Lundgren, with today's Gridiron Report, on the Cameranian Sports Network. Yesterday's game was a definitive loss to Estenia, who have been a formidable team so far during this Maple Leaf Bowl. After our loss, we're sitting at third in our group, due to the large point differential after yesterday's loss. Today we face New Wolfopolis, who is at forth in our group. Hopefully, the game will go in or favor today, allowing us to have a good spot for later in the tournament. We'll have to wait and see how we do. Until then, I've been Kara Lundgren, for the Cameranian Sports Network.
