Somehow, the humble Vannish Futsal team had made its way to the gold medal game. Win or lose, the team that had been severely under ranked would be going home with a medal. Once again, the team they were playing against was ranked higher than them.

Just Ike in the 5-a-side World Cup, it was a question of how much longer they could keep up the streak. The fact of the matter was that a Vannish Futsal team would never be under ranked again.

Unfortunately, the team they had to play against had developed quite a reputation. During the previous Futsal tournament, there was an incident at one of the Havenic games. Someone was sniped while singing their national anthem.

The Vangazi were a whole different breed. It was an absolute guarantee that this sort of thing would not happen against them. They were humble, stoic and bold. Their ancestry was a mix of Scandinavian and African. With the sort of disrespect that the Havenic fans showed at that particular match and all its travesty towards justice, they would be watched closely at these games.

As a matter of fact, they were being watched right now. Something was brewing and security knew about it.

For this game, security would be beefed up. Whether it would be the military of Saintland, their police, or a private military corporation paid for by the Vangazi, no Havenic mischief would happen during their watch.

As for what was brewing, security knew about it. Apparently some fans believed they could outsmart X-rays and other security devices. Perhaps it was a ploy, a rouse on the part of Saintland. A dangerous plan to allow certain fans to sneak weapons in, so that they could all be picked off by sniper rifles... Only if they so dared, would they meet the nastiest punishments available.

The Vannish were here in equal numbers to the Havenic. This was their national sport. They remembered the events of the 5-a-side game. They would be just as loud and cruel as the Havenic chose to be. Everyone could either play sports and have a good time, or terrorist activity could occur and each and everyone responsible could be hunted down like rats by terriers..

But the average Vannish citizen would rather go about their day. Overall they were ecstatic that their little team made it into the gold medal game. This meant a lot for their rankings in future events.

This was the one sport that mattered to the Vangazi. Although they were underdogs, they would be competing for the gold, just like they ought to be.

Just to spite the Havenic, the extended version of the national anthem would be sung and it would be sung along to by each Vangazi in the crowd proudly.

OOC: I do not give permission for my fans, players or the person singing my national anthem to be sniped or otherwise maimed. There will be no god modding of my side..

Mario Angrisano Brings It Home!
Basil Times

Angrisano outlasted the opposition to win the States' first gold medal of the Memorial Games in the presitigous Tennis Singles Event. This year's national champion proved that Swiss tennis is still very much a factor in the sporting world, as the fit and in-form Angrisano did not lose a single match over the course of the tournament. The 27 year old Basil native looks in the peak form of his career and hopefully we will continue to see more stunning performances.

In related news, the Swiss netball team advanced to the elimination rounds at the top of their group. In the sailing event, all three top-flight squads have advanced to the quarterfinals. Lusavik, Lucerne, and the national team will race for the medal podium. Hopefully one of our elite crews can bring home another gold, if results from Nationals this year stand, it will be the Lucerne Boat Club which triumphs, although thus far in the tournament the Lusavik Gentleman's Club has performed excellently, and has let to lose a fixture.

Epic Rematch in Sailing Semifinal
Basil Times

Sailor Evan Williams of the Lucerne Boat Club runs a hand through his hair, smoothing back a well-maintained crew cut. "Yeah, Lusavik's really been out for blood ever since we handed their ass to them at Nationals this year," he says, referring to the last time the two rowing institutions met, earlier this year, where Lucerne defeated Lusavik for the gold medal by less than a stern deck Lusavik has yet to lose a single fixture in the Memorial Games, although Williams casually dismisses this. "None of these other teams matter. It was always going to end up like this: a one-on-one." Indeed, his words seem to ring true when one looks at the semifinal draw, of the four teams remaining, three are Swiss (the third being the publicly funded Swiss national team).

No doubt, the eyes of the nation will be on this boat race tomorrow. Fans on both sides will still have reason to rejoice even if their team loses; the Swiss are guaranteed at least two out of the three medals in the event, and, with luck, perhaps a sweep.

Royal Palace, St. Petrus, Saintland

It was now Friday night and Petrus Fadius finally showed up at the Palace. The King had requested to speak with him about the Vakolicci. However, Petrus felt that his 14-year-old son Andreas, who had actually lived, for a time, in their nation and had known the infamous Blacksen Domination, was better qualified to speak about the Vakolicci. Petrus had not been happy with his wife's decision to send the boy there, but she eventually talked him into it. When Andreas returned home, unexpectedly, on a Nicholls jetliner and told him about what he had seen, Petrus regretted that he had allowed his wife to talk him into that, against his better judgment.

Now, he was invited to speak to the King. He knew Prince Andreas. Every adult soccer player in the Kingdom did. He also knew that the Prince respected his tactical ability. Despite being a sub-par soccer player, Petrus Fadius had managed to play adult soccer for nearly 2 decades and captain his team for the better part of that. If he had been born in another nation, he would have transitioned into managing by now, but managers just weren't used in Sanctii sports. That just wasn't the way that they played the game.

As Fadius and his son entered the King's Throne Room, the King welcomed them:

King Petrus XX - Welcome, Mr. Fadius. I see that you've brought your son along with you.

Petrus Fadius - Yes, your Majesty. I apologize for making you wait so long, but I wanted to bring my son with me.

Andreas was awe-struck that he was standing in the presence of the King. He was left speechless. Then, the King spoke directly to him.

King Petrus XX - You are Andreas, correct?

Andreas tried to speak, but no words came out.

Petrus Fadius - Yes, he is, your Majesty. I'm afraid that his nerves are getting the best of him.

King Petrus XX - Andreas, you don't need to worry about anything. I just want you to tell me about the Vakolicci.

Andreas found his voice and spent over an hour describing things that he had seen, while he lived amongst the Vakolicci. Finally, the King asked him a direct question:

King Petrus XX - Andreas, Mr. Fadius, Blacksen Domination has made terroristic threats to the St. Petrus Police Chief. Are these threats credible? Could they have possibly gotten anything past Customs?

Andreas remembered some of things that Blacksen had said about his desire to smuggle weapons into Saintland and overthrow the King's Government. While he didn't really believe that they could get anything past Customs, Andreas wasn't certain, so he decided to be alarmist, in order that the King might do something to stop them:

Andreas Fadius - I believe so, Your Majesty.

Petrus Fadius thought the whole idea preposterous, but he wasn't going to argue with his son about a matter where his son was more knowledgeable than he was. That would just be foolish.

Petrus Fadius - My son knows them better than I do.

King Petrus XX - If so, when do you believe they will strike?

Petrus Fadius - Your Majesty, is it not obvious that, if they intend to commit an act of terror, members of the Royal Family would be targeted?

Andreas Fadius - I think the Closing Ceremony would be a likely target, as would an attack on the Palace after the end of the King Paulus XV Memorial Games.

King Petrus XX - I guess so. Well, I will hold off on opening selling tickets to the Closing Ceremony until after I play in the Arena Gridiron Final, the sole remaining event at these Games that involves a member of my family. Then, we will announce that tickets to the Closing Ceremony will only be available to citizens.

Petrus Fadius - That sounds good to me, but what about traveling to and from Royal Stadium for the Closing Ceremony?

King Petrus XX - We will not be taking any risks.

Andreas Fadius - What about having the Royal Army escort them out of the Kingdom, after their final event of the Games, but before the Closing Ceremony?

King Petrus XX - Actually, I think that's probably the better solution. Once the final event is held, I'll have the Royal Army round up all of the Vakolicci and order them to leave immediately.

Petrus Fadius - Are you sure that you'll actually be able to get all of them out? They're everywhere.

King Petrus XX - Maybe not, but if we don't, I may have to consider doing our part of the Closing Ceremony from the Palace, with half of the Royal Army in the area and the Royal Air Force flying overhead. Either that or I'll just delay the Ceremony for several days until we kick all of those Vakolicci troublemakers out. Any other questions?

Both the elder and the younger Fadius realized that the conversation about the Vakolicci threat was over, so they began to take advantage of their opportunity by chatting with the King about other matters.

Andreas Fadius - Why has this year's Grueling Stakes been expanded by 2 and a half furlongs?

King Petrus XX - Since the Triple Crown will remain vacant for at least one more year, I wanted to add excitement to the race by making it an even truer test of endurance.

They continued to chat, late into the night, until Andreas was struggling to stay awake. Finally, the King offered to let them stay overnight in the Palace. They did not know, at this time, but King Petrus had decided to have a talk with his brother about finding some kind of advisory role with the National Soccer Team for Petrus Fadius. His talents were being wasted captaining a village team, with bottom of the table talent, to mid-table status year after year. He was exactly what the National Soccer Team needed, to maintain their edge going into the next World Cup...

Celeria: lovely rolling hills, massive amounts of slave labour, a strange amount of wildlife compared to sprawling cities, a bit too hot for anyone, some rather good musicians and culture. If you asked a tourist visiting Celeria what stood out, it would be that...oh, and the dragons of course.

Every Celari knew that dragons didn't exist, although often it appeared they wished they did. Dragon symbols were everywhere: the provincial flag had a crowned Dragon prominently displayed, the Celari version of the standard Vakolicci Dral had a dragon on the obverse side to the image of King Althyus, and the media were obsessed with referring to particular sportsmen as something to do with a dragon. Dragons, it seemed, were Celeria's latest adiction: 50 years ago it had been killing each other, now it was dragons...soon it seemed it would be killing each other again.

But now, of course, it was Dragons: and low and behold, the person who the media loved to refer to as the 'little' dragon was currently playing tennis.
Luciano Ziccardino IV was 9 years old, a very good player, and far too mature for his years. He ran and dove around the court, hardly needing the assistance of the craggy-faced Colonel Selav Tukerawan in his doubles match. In fact, the 1 set in which the colonel took the leading role, the pair was destroyed 6-1.

At that point, the child took the leading role, and the Chiatan opposition stood little chance.
6-2 was better than the Chiatan's played for. The power behind the Ziccardino first serve produced ace after ace, and the Chiatans went down in the remaining 3 sets in only 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Next up, they knew, however, that the Stoikos sisters from Acedonia would be a far harder deal entirely. It was hoped by all, however, that the 9-year old would take the leading role over the 32-year old colonel who was beginning to look decidedly tired.

At the Royal hotel in St. Petrus, one of the other multitudinous 'dragons' was enjoying a simple Vakolicci breakfast.
Blacksen sat across from his long-term girlfriend Laura Mccabe, who had already been given the royal titles that would be applicable when she married him. 'When' was a foregone conclusion: the match was going to happen, it was simply a matter of time.

The bread, the Chilli relish, the spiced pork and lamb. All were imported especially from the Haven.

The previous night, Jean-luc had done a very close search with his 2 men around Blacksen's room and balcony for recording cameras, a little electronic device crawling around the floors and walls: over the roof and into tiny areas. Luckily, the place was not bugged.

The dining room, however, was a different matter. When the device found something, it vacumed it up. A few cameras and microphones ended up giving a very good view of the little shoot that the machine ate them into, before being crushed. Blacksen had then sent an anonymous cheque of 12,000 Dral to the St. Petrus police, with a note proclaiming only that it was 'for your toys.'

Therefore, the 2 could now talk in relative privacy, although they were still careful to not expose their real objectives.

"Will Jean be able to get his men where he wants them?" Blacksen asked.
"Probably," Laura replied. "I spoke to him a bit ago. They've found a few tall buildings with enough rubbish on the roofs...water towers, chimneys...to be able to hide benhind. They're going to be on tower blocks I think."
"So, they'll be using those new Velstranian cameras, won't they?" Blacksen asked. "Should be able to help with the study."
"Yes. We could probably get a good line of sight to monitor the way that the other players act when they are being captained by their King. It should be a useful study."
"I hope the findings will be appropriate," Blacksen answered, smiling.

Royal Palace, St. Petrus, Saintland

A day later, King Petrus XX was a little uncertain about what the Fadiuses had told him. He trusted Customs to do their job and prevent anybody from smuggling weapons into his Kingdom, but he did have some doubt in the back of his mind. Better safe than sorry, he thought. Yet, as he began to think about it more and more, he realized that he would likely need some backup to get the Vakolicci out of his Kingdom. He decided to call the Senior Consul of the Free Republics. Despite his differences with the Republicans, he figured that they would jump at the option to help him out, if he scared them sufficiently.

Gilbert Savard answered the call in the Free Republics, which came in at 3 in the morning Republica Standard Time. Savard had been sleeping, but it was his responsibility as Consul to answer those 3 AM phone calls. He looked at his phone's caller ID and recognized the number as belonging to the Sanctii Palace. He answered it immediately:

Gilbert Savard - Hello.

King Petrus XX - Hello, Consul Savard. This is the King of Saintland.

Gilbert Savard - Your Majesty, is there a reason why you are calling me at this time of the night, my time?

King Petrus XX - Yes, Consul. I am calling you about a matter that concerns the safety of Republican citizens.

Gilbert Savard - Really, now? Did your cops just arrest another stupid tourist for impersonating a Sanctii schoolgirl?

That was, actually, a rather frequent event. Many Republicans thought that it was "cool" to travel to Saintland and impersonate Sanctii youth, likely because of the danger involved. Consul Savard had grown sick of that trend and had finally told King Paulus XV, just minutes prior to his assassination, to just do whatever he wanted with those kinds of situations.

King Petrus XX - No, Consul. Republican citizens are in real danger.

Gilbert Savard - How could they be?

King Petrus XX - I have reason to believe that there is a small chance that some of the participants in the ongoing Games being held in honor of my late father may have succeeded in smuggling weapons past Customs.

Gilbert Savard - Surely, you must be talking about the Republican delegation. If they did any such thing, I can assure you that their only goal is self-defense.

King Petrus XX - That's not what I'm worried about, Consul. I'm sure that the Republican delegation is law-abiding and respectful of my father's memory. The problem is that there is another delegation that clearly isn't.

Gilbert Savard - Do you have any proof?

King Petrus XX - Unfortunately, no. But, their Prince did say to the St. Petrus Police Chief, and I quote, "money can buy a lot of terrorists for hire" End Quote. As well as, and I quote, "Do consider this a warning." End Quote.

Gilbert Savard - He actually said that?

King Petrus XX - Yes, around a week and a half ago.

Gilbert Savard - He THREATENED A TERRORIST ATTACK and you're just NOW bothering to let me know about it?

King Petrus XX - Consul, I had Arena Gridiron games to compete in. I was too busy to think about it.

Gilbert Savard - You should have told me immediately. If they're planning acts of terror, well I'm not going to allow them to do anything of the sort, not when Republican citizens are in your nation.

King Petrus XX - I'm glad to hear that. Will you be able to send over around 50 thousand troops and some planes to transport all of them home?

Gilbert Savard - Absolutely. I'm not going to allow Republican lives to be put in danger.

King Petrus XX - Will you make certain that the Junior Consul is unaware of this operation until it goes down, for the sake of the people of both of our nations?

Gilbert Savard - I will. Fortunately, Consul Piazza is currently on vacation in Falatutu.

King Petrus had been to the FFR enough times to know the reputation of Falatutu. It was called Sin Island by many Republicans and was certainly not a place that he had any intention to ever visit.

King Petrus XX - That is very fortunate.

Gilbert Savard - I'll give the order to several units to deploy immediately to your Kingdom, to support your police and armed forces in their time of need.

King Petrus XX - Thank you.

Gilbert Savard - Now, please let me go back to sleep...

King Petrus ended the call. The Consul went back to sleep, but now Republican troops were on their way to Saintland, to help send all of the Vakolicci home early, once they had concluded their participation in the Games...

In the end, the Vannish lost the Futsal gold medal game. The Havenic team simply played well. They were an experienced team and they fought their way through the game. The Vannish fans had to admit it was a good game and nothing too crazy happened. Maybe the Havenic were not so bad after all.

The Vannish Volleyball team also brought home the silver. Competition was tough and they were a stone's throw away from the gold.

Meanwhile, in Luge, the Voggle sisters fought their way into the top 3. They were bringing the bronze home to South Vangazi. The Emperor released a statement saying he was proud of all of his athletes. Their delegation entered the competition not favored to win anything. Yet here they were.

South Vangazi actually did have some pretty high ranked athletes on second thought. In Taekwondo, South Vangazi girl Helena Choppson was going for the gold. Hopefully for the sake of the Vannish Empire she would win her bout and bring the precious medal back for the empire.
