I just do not understand why they would do this. I understand that they tend to be Tories painted red, but I never thought that they would actively try and upset the people who vote for them.

This is being spun as a plan to cut benefits to people who don't have the training to get jobs, and refuse to take training to get jobs. This is really just window-dressing, the more fundamental change is that people who are on Jobseeker's Allowance can now get state-funded training to allow them to get new jobs. Currently, people who are on benefits are prevented from training while looking for work, so this is actually just a change in those rules that allows people to train and look for work at the same time.

Hopefully, this would help young people to find jobs that under the current system they would not have the training to do.

Denying them benefits is going to pay for training? Why not let them stay on benefits and still have the government fund the training? They're still going to need food and housing while in school.

You realise that all this will actually do is put past school leavers and current unemployed on the same educational level as new school leavers, right?
New school leavers are now required to have an A-level or equivalent (including vocational) education.

Without A-level or equivalent education, unskilled unemployed will be hugely behind new school leavers in educational attainment and be even less employable.

Indeed it has, and it demonstrates that not everything should be sold off at the first opportunity. Natural monopolies may occur anyway.

How is denying them welfare going to help past school leavers get education? The government should set up a system that supports those who wish to get more education instead of taking away payments and hoping that it will encourage them to get more educated.

Very stupid idea which will lose more votes than it gains, in my opinion. Also hampers to an idiotic view that there actually are adequate jobs and training available for school-leavers and young people which, needless to say, there aren't.

This move by Milliband makes me happy.

Not because I agree with it, but because it means that it's taking more steps to create divisions within the party.

This, my friends, is why the trade unions are shite at making good judgements on behalf of Britain. I'm quite glad though, because without them, Labour would win the general election. Thank you Len McCluskey!

Yeah he got elected by them (not great), but not every policy is dreamt up by the unions. By that logic every Tory policy now made is from the rich private-schooled elite.

I know he did, but you still don''t like Labour anyway, apparently. Would you have voted for David Milliband or David Cameron, because judging by your earlier comments you still deride Labour for, well, the evils of existing and being left-wing.

I think its a stupid policy, but the unions are only a partial root cause, and not that relevant. I also wasn't replying directly to you there.

I wouldn't do it, but frankly I'm not bothered.
If I wanted to force the teens unable to find work because they have less qualifications than current school leavers to get training, then I'd say: 'Get training or do unpaid work and we'll pay you more than an over 21. Don't do it and you'll get nothing.'
That would seem more fair.
But as I say, I wouldn't do either.

But it's certainly not the big controversy the OP wants it to be.
