the 'average' 'city' in cameroi, looks like you're still out in the woods, except for the frequency of transit stops surrounded by gardens. well most of it does anyway. one or two districts might have a cluster or two of larger buildings, but that's pretty much about it.

of course they're all marvels of technology on the inside. we're NOT ludites nor primativists, although it IS perfectly possible to live by hunting and gathering in cameroi also if one chooses to.
many choose to live relatively simple lives, but still love creating and exploring with technology little distinguishable from magic.

the closest cameroi come to ostentation is this sense of illusory magic.

of course, its always possible that its not always entirely illusion either.

the diversity of themnax's images on f.a. and elsewhere, just almost just bearly begins to scratch the surface of cameroi's diversity. it's fondness for the appearance of healthy, wild, and seemingly unaltered nature, is, however, nearly universal.

it almost goes without saying, even such cities as we have, most cameroi don't live in them, but in the vast number of much smaller towns and villages, frequently within walking distance of one another.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Postby The Adrian Empire » Wed May 19, 2010 9:15 pm

The Typical Adrian City varies from the Inner, Outer and Fringe Colonies, and also in our colonies.

A typical Inner Colonies City is an expansive urban metropolis, with massive arcologic buildings thousands of metres high, the towers usually have large terraces built around their midpoints, with wide bridges connect these buildings together, these rather then the ground below (which are typically used for manufacturing and industry, and occasionally interspersed with parks, forests and artificial rivers) serve as the main centres of foot traffic and commerce, as such many of these cities (or groups within the cities) also build elaborate rail lines running along these wide terraces. These cities are usually very beautiful, with thousands of gardens, fountains and sculptures usually built by private organizations or with help from the civil service bureau, hovercars are somewhat atypical in these cities, limited parking space means that rentals and taxis are the most common forms, that said private cars are common enough that you will see one any given time you look up. Buses run by a variety of corporations also run high above the city with passengers. Cities are usually very luxurious looking combine the architecture of Art-Deco and Greco-Roman (colloquially called Greco-Deco) with occasional forays into International and Futuristic Buildings, making Imperial Cities very Beautiful.
Old City Veritium, Sierrium
Image
A Perfect example of Greco-Roman influences, Old City Veritium is the centre of Imperial Government, and as such as grown to reflect the Roman history of the Empire, Patricians can be seen wearing their robes, likely they are about to attend a formal function, as suits and fedoras would otherwise be the norm. This also shows the elaborate bridges and art of the Empire. This architecture style typically appears around government structures and wealthy patrician areas, whereas art-deco and greco-deco are more common in the main city.

The Spartanum International Spaceport, Nova Laurus
Image
This photo clearly exemplifies the terraces system of our nation. Spartanum is the central headquarters of the Imperial Military in the Inner Colonies, as such it's buildings tend to reflect the austere military nature of its citizens. Though they have a beauty all to their own.

These are the most typical architecture in the Empire, found in nearly every city in the Empire. The above image clearly shows everyday Adrian Citizens going about their business. While the below shows some examples of sky-bridges and typical architecture.

The colonial city is built around a central structure formed by the landed colony ship, this central structure contains the basic administration buildings, homes for several thousand, a central business area, and an armoury for the civil defence or purchased mercenary forces. The starship engine is refitted to become a hydrogen power generator supplying enough power to supply a small city. The main structure itself is very strong and acts a stronghold in case of the city being attacked. From their the city branches off colonial cities are usually built with an expandable modular wall, which provides security for the inner buildings, which are typically similar to the Inner Colonies, but with more freestanding structures, terraces being typical in older cities, as the Empire tends to build up rather then out.

The Fringe City is very rarely built on planet surface, as they are harder to protect from slave raids, instead mining facilities will be located on planet while the main population lives in orbital satellites and terraformed asteroids around them. Satellite cities vary in construction pattern, some cities in fact are just ad-hoc constructs of derelict ships welded together. These plucky frontier cities are usually havens for vice and criminal behaviour, casinos, seedy night clubs and brothels offering services that would not be acceptable in the civilized inner colonies. These are not illegal in the Empire proper, but rather would see little clientèle due to the Adrian sense of Morality, out here is where the outcasts congregate. Pirates, Slavers and Gangs make the Fringes one of the most dangerous areas in the Empire, the unlucky traveller caught in the Fringes without a weapon is best advised to stick to the main stations, where in trouble they might be assisted by armed passersby, avoiding the darker areas where robberies, kidnappings and other salacious activity occurs, of course his best course of action is to get his hands on a gun, that is supposing he is a citizen or valid tourist permit holder.

Many of our earlier designs still present in our older cities look alot like masdar city:

Alot of our newer ones have a more Frescan design:

Brutalism is also very popular with our architects these days, and the refurbishings of our older cities are adopting the style aesthetically while staying true to the Frescan circular city design with heavy New Modernist leanings.

Postby Sagatagan » Thu May 20, 2010 11:06 pm

Sagatagan, an anarchist mutualist society, only has three large cities; Avon, Freetown, and New Barcelona. There also the smaller cities of Minado and Maquisa. Most of the population of Sagatagan lives in villages, which are usually more or less self-sufficient either individually or in small clusters, relying on the cities only for heavy industry.

Families in Sagatagan live in extended family homes, so most houses are both old and large, and often include some form of cottage industry, especially in the countryside, though since the country began to develop, there are more people who work in factories. This urbanization has lead to some breakdown in the cities, but the new arrivals in the cities often formed new extended families there. Some urban growth has happened, but the idea of suburbs and separate business and living districts is still an alien idea to the people of Sagatagan (this being one more factor that leads to environmentally friendly businesses- the worker controlled factories are right next to where the workers live). Strong neighborhood watches and mutual aid societies exist. There are often community gardens, as well. The concept of the lawn instead of a garden is almost unheard of- grass is only grown as a way to hold in soil.

The mutual credit system in Sagatagan makes long-term planning feasible, and a strong ecological culture was built even before the revolution, so many old and almost all new buildings are built green as a matter of course- usually from local materials, self-regulating in temperature, and south-facing windows. Most ground-level walls are covered in graffiti, though if it's not tasteful, it usually doesn't last.

The Imerian architecture is indeed a sight for sore eyes instead of those horrible tall buildings that most nations seem to be so fascinated with. The buildings are also built with countless generations experiences and traditions in mind so it is without any doubt that I can say that they indeed is amongst the most beautiful in the world.
