I think it's part of a global trend of increasing tolerance of LGBT by youth, at least in most parts of the world.

The Philippines is a land of paradoxes. Many of the things the West deem as benchmarks for equality are lacking, yet the country is surprisingly is a 'bright spot' for gender issues in developing countries. We don't have gay marriage or civil unions, yet the people are LGBT-friendly, even the older people (especially when compared to other Asian nations). We don't have divorce or abortion-on-demand or even public contraception, yet the country has the fifth smallest gender gap.

To me, part of this stems from institutional apathy and the culture. There are few laws discriminating in favor of women or gender minorities, but there are little to no laws discriminating against them either. (For example, there are no gender quotas for elected positions, but there are no gender barriers for elective positions either. Yet we are in the top 10 of the countries for women's political empowerment.) The institutions (apart from the Church) do not touch these social issues and as a result, the Westernized culture with pre-colonial undertones of equality (such as women's rights and things such as babaylans) come to the fore. We are still conservative and religious as a country and as a people, but that doesn't preclude us from being tolerant. That said, we also have tons of other problems to solve.

So true! Gender equality really stems from the cultural background of the population. Patriarchal cultures tend to have a hard time bridging the gap between genders simply because it is already deeply embedded into their society that men have more power over women. It really boils down to long-held beliefs that still dictate present social norms.

For example, our deep reverence for mothers and women in general as the "light of the community" (ilaw ng tahanan) help bridge the gender gap, though not solve it entirely. There is still discrimination but it would be far less than what you would see in western countries.

The Philippines is strategically located. And very rich in minerals and agriculture. Problem was that the US did not help industrialize the Philippines like they did Japan which had started WW II. They left the Philippines has a raw material supplier for re-Industrialized Japan. Once the Philippines properly industrializes and the economy takes off they will become a regional power. Remember, you also need a large population.in order to be a regional power. Economic growth means more tax money for the government to spend on education. That is if corruption is controlled.

The South of the Philippines is not prone to Typhoons. The Northern and Central parts just need better building codes, move people out of flood plains and steep mountains and the canalizing of rivers. This will help solve the Typhoon problems.

When it comes to the Communist guerillas in the Philippines, I heard they are generally in isolated areas. Economic development should make these Communist and any other group vanish. Has for your comment on Communist China, I read that they want better ties to the Philippines so they are no longer supplying the rebels.

Well the communist insurgency is dying down and will continue to die down as long as we continue building up the economy, why do you think they're sabotaging plantations in Mindanao, because they know that the minute the economy in the Southern region starts picking up, their beloved Communism will start to die in the country, because the economic prosperity that they promise will never succeed...

I'm sorry. Over populated? This is nothing compared to our northeastern Neighbor, in fact, this population of ours is good for us since this could become labor force. There is no overpopulation in our country, our population is just concentrated much in the Urban areas while they almost do not exist in the forest and the mountains. Economically weak? We have a huge potential and are in terms of growth, doing quite well even if we're still not being releasign even a fraction of our potential.

+Federalize the country, nationalize raw materials extracting industries, encourage the population to become entrepreneurs and invent and attract foreign investment from Japan, European union and other countries on the pretext we can be better than Japan because we do not have problems in terms of running out of natural resources and we have a potentially innovative industry considering we invented certain good stuff like the fluorescent lamp and other things.

This nation, with all it's natural resources, with all it's people can be great again. Our nation can be great again. We don't need a military to show who is boss. Economy is the real barometer that determines powerful nations of the 21st century. China's GDP is only a result of their unstoppable population who's demand for consumer goods keeps on increasing until the point the actually vulnerable economic bubble of China would collapse, because their economy is no different than the United states's because it is still them whose debt is still bigger than their own economy which is only 2nd to that of the United states. Their economy has the potential to collapse along with their population which is just a house of cards ready to collapse on the following decades to come if they cannot keep up with the population's demand without totally having to expand their natural resource pool both home and abroad. In today's time, Nationalist Filipinos tend to point that the Chinese are not limited to the people in mainland China and Taiwan but are also those Filipinos with significant Chinese traits or the so-called "tsinoys". One of them is the corrupt president turned dictator Ferdinand Marcos. They are often blamed for the existence of corruption comitted without remorse to what it may do to the Filipino people.

"They do not feel remorse for Filipinos because they are not Filipinos." That's what they sometimes say.
